They're not easily ditched (it may be my loyalty gene), and once you've found one, you keep them hidden like a little secret that's only shared with your nearest and dearest. After one visit, I'm not 100% convinced I've found this in VS. Sure-- their reputation is unparalleled. And like my fellow Yelper said, THEY certainly do tell you what you want. Which, for the most part is okay by me. I'm not a hair stylist and darned if I know what I look good in / what looks good on me. But two things I do know: I don't like my curly hair and when I pay a small fortune to have it cut and styled, I like to have it straightened. Buzzing in a bit of factory-like way, they do take great care to give you a great cut. Their whole philosophy is based on the fact that they work with your natural hair to make it look great. I can appreciate that. But when I've lived with my hair for 35 years, and have never been satisfied with or successfully made it look great regardless of hair cut or product, I think I have the right to ask the person I'm paying to do my hair to blow dry it straight. Perhaps I'm too eager to please or easily chastised... either way, 75 GBP later, I walked out of there with curly hair. *Sigh* I guess my hunt will continue...

Gone are the days of the barber shop......no really....GONE!!! Vidal sassoon has over the last 50…read moreyears revolutionised the art of hair cutting/styling. He has created an art form a science and he is still going strong at the age of 83. He might live in LA but his brand is now spread worldwide and his legacy will no doubt live on. The concept is so different here. You don't walk into one of these salons and tell the stylist what you want. THEY tell YOU... what you should have. For example clippers!!!! According to one of the stylist I was talking to during my last cut, everyone's head shape is different their faces are unique. That's a fair point right?? So if you use the clippers and just follow the contours of the head depending on how your head is shaped and it won't be perfect with no bumps let me tell you, it will look odd. What the stylist do here is recommend the right hair cut which best suits your head and face, I think this is fair point. Whether you care or not is a different matter but I still feel the argument is a compelling one. Now this almost scientific attitude towards hair styling didn't come about over night as I mentioned Vidal has been going for over 50 years. It almost acts as an international academy now for the rest, who merely follow in their footsteps. Ok so let us come to the issue of how much it would set you back. Cheap it is not, but needless to say the service will be impeccable and you will be in safe and expert hands. A consultation, shampoo massage, conditioner and finish will set you back around £50, however there is a 20% discount available for students as well as corporate discounts. The ideal scenario I suppose is a gift voucher which is a perfect gift or treat for a friend or other half. Must add that price tag is for a creative level 1 cutter. As you go up The ladder the price goes up. Creative director of this salon for example will charge £89. Which is less than they do in London ....around £120... So Like I said just wish that someone treats you to a gift voucher or go along yourself, and be educated in the art and science of hair styling. If you want the best you gotta cough up right??

And as you may be aware from my former Mufti review, I badgered a friend of mine into visiting them. I booked myself an appointment for Saturday with very high expectations, and they were met gallantly. Mufti is cool, there's no denying it. It's in the Northern Quarter for starters, it's run by guys, the music is unbelievably mellow and lovely and it's simple, clean and relaxing. They had me at the film magazines by the sofa. You might not be able to pick a hairdo from them but you can read through which films should have been TV shows. Agreed, journalists! Empire Records should SO have been a series, as should Watchmen. Ahem, where was I. Not that I'm leaving Salvation (http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/salvation-hair-ltd-salford#hrid:iRY12h4CSS4gugZ1e-S2Pg), it just feels a little weird to walk in there without Alex, but I was more than intrigued to see what Mufti could do with my stupid hair type. Over the years I've tried and failed to make it more manageable, the only thing that really worked for me was a pixie cut. Now I've ill-advisedly grown it long again and its natural wave and supposed 'thinness but lots of it' have got the better of me. Hair, meet Karl, a genius, a lovely guy who washed my hair himself without getting some floor sweeper to do it and asked me questions about my hair routine throughout. I think he could tell from the clobber that I'm something of a vintage junkie, and my resulting style reflected that. A snip, a tweak, some conversations about Alex (he knew him very vaguely), advice on hair products and a confirmation that my hair is indeed thick (take THAT, Headmasters) and that short layers are fooling me into thinking my hair's manageable later, I looked in the mirror and was greeted with a silky head of waves worthy of a 40s movie star. I'm a convert.

Once when I 'modelled' for a branch of Vidal Sassoon they somehow managed to make me look middle aged. Moi, who regularly gets ID'd for paracetemol. But at Razor's Edge, those few extra pennies really do seem to go a long way. The staff treat you like minor royalty; you know where you are and who is looking after you at all times and they treat you like an individual. I have been a few times and one that sticks out is when I went for a blow dry before a birthday party. My birthday party. We all know how important it is to look good when you are the one throwing the bash. So, my hair stylist was funny and chatty. Quite a lot of naughty talk actually about his wife, when I thought that he was gay - mystery. He recommended dying my hair a shade darker and showed me where it needed to be cut next time and why. My hair stayed perfect for most of the night which is more than I can say for other occasions and other hairdressers... Razor's Edge is without a doubt where I'm going for my next hair appointment. My favourite stylist at Denny has moved on to bigger and better (and more expensive) pastures, so what's a girl to do? I booked in to Razors Edge for a Saturday and headed down for my appointment. Unfortunately, my stylist was running 30-45 minutes late. If they can text to remind you about your appointment, can't they do the same for any delays? Although I enjoyed the time to wander around town, I was there for my hair! The overall experience was much the same as last time. Lots of chatting between stylists, plenty of regulars, and then those of us who are between exploring new places and actually just mourning the loss of our last favourite. I was happy with the overall cut, though I did have to trim a certain section myself - not easy- due to the difference in the way I style my hair and the way she parted it on the day. The price continues to be a real stickler for me and I'll continue my search for the perfect balance between amazing hair and cheap cheap prices.

This little piggy didn't go blonde, but she did go a helllllllluva lot darker, at the capable hands of Adam. From the moment I stepped foot back into FB, I was even more well-taken-care-of than the first time. While I waited for Adam to finish up someone else, I read an actual current copy of Glamour, and was given a free fringe trim and tidy-up. And then Adam did my hair. Adam is one of the most fun hairdressers I have ever encountered. Funny, sharp and with a definite wild streak. He tried to get me to go for some kind of crazy colour flash, but finally acccepted that I wanted to go for the deepest dark brown instead. He helped me choose the best possible shade, taking into account my skin and eye colours (as usual) and also my natural *lip* colour! That's some colour consultation, non? The resultant colour is possibly the best I have ever had, and certainly buries dead my relationship with Razors Edge. Though it's just one colour with no extra tones put in, Adam worked the colour and application to accentuate the natural tones in my hair, and it's a flawless job. A full head tint costs £42 with Adam, and it'll be the best £42 your hair has ever had spent on it.

I came in for all over color and highlight (requiring bleach). Midway through, my colorist had another appointment so I got an intern. She finished my hair and all seemed okay. However, when I went home (I have dark hair) I noticed a huge patch of yellow/blonde in my black hair that they didn't cover up. Also, as my boyfriend nicely pointed out, they color my sideburns a little too much and now part of my cheek peach fuzz is black. I went in to have the bleached corrected and the colorist corrected it no problem. My second time I just did an all over color and it was a fine experience! Nothing bad this time! One thing I miss about Aveda back home is there Aveda tea and they give you a free hand massage while your hair is getting dyed. They say they give free hang massages online but I've never been offered one. I'll continue to go cause its close and the girl who does my hair is pleasant.

I actually came here a few days after the Italy Referendum where they voted against the EU, as a euro-sceptic I loved this and was glad to see the back of PM Renzi and a revolt against the establishment in Italy, it took so much hard work not to start talking about it with my hairdresser. The staff seemed friendly here, I got chatting to some of them who had been living in the UK, longer than I've been arrived since arriving from Italy, they seemed really friendly, spoke great English too. The haircut was reasonable priced at £12 for a dry-cut, my usual place in Manchester where I've stopped going, both Supercuts and Kim Creative charged £15 and sometimes even over that, so it is quite reasonable pricing for a city centre barbers. Despite my request, my haircut took much longer than expected and around double what it usually takes somewhere else, I admit that still it is okay, the timing can be much improve. She also did be careful as per my request to not catch my head, she did this well. Inside, it is quite small and isn't the greatest of places, it seemed quiet and hidden and it did get the job doing later on in the evening, probably around 5:30pm so I'm pleased to give this place 3 stars and a promise I will return.

Unfortunately the hairdresser my friend used was unavailable in the week that I wanted to get my hair done. I opted to use someone of equivalent level and thought that given the salons good reviews that would be just as good. At the salon I found the staff to be pleasant but uninterested in me. The hairdresser I used kept watching the door as if I was just a filler appointment in between their more important clients. I found the same with the reception staff who just left me standing there aimlessly for a while whilst they chatted. I wouldn't have minded the staff's dismissiveness so much if the cut had been good. However, once I got home I noticed that there were long pieces of hair that that the hairdresser has missed and I ended up having to cut these piece to length myself at home. I understand that it might be easy to miss small bits of hair but these were reasonable sizeable sections. Overall I was just disappointed. My friend had spoken about how much she liked the salon as they were very friendly and the cut/colours were always good. I had to sadly disagree. However, I do note that this could be a one time lapse in service and I am going back again tomorrow to the hairdresser actually recommended by my friend so if they are much better I will happily change my views and let you all know.
