What a great gem of a coffee shop. I stopped in on a whim on my way from Columbus to OSU Mansfield for a work event. The prices are LOW, the quality is HIGH and the people are incredibly friendly. I had a large latte and their signature biscuit with their strawberry jam. The latte was on par with Starbucks. The signature biscuit made in house is amazing. I stepped into this cute coffee shop while visiting the area for a family reunion. The line was almost out the door, but I figured I would give the place a chance rather than drive around to look for a different coffee shop. I'm glad I waited! Even though they were clearly experiencing a rush of customers, the staff was amazing and the shop was spotlessly clean! I tried a Vanilla Latte, which was delicious. It had never before struck me in this way, that the stretch of I 71 in between the city of Columbus and RT 30 might be anything other than the obvious insufferably boring; that it may in fact serve as a kind of fortunate avenue on my never ending exploration for all things memorable; but on this particular Ikea run, fortunate is exactly how it played itself out. I didn't drive it. That's the sole reason I ended up at Nickel and Bean. Another nondescript town, or so I thought. I was lost in the book I was listening to and wasn't paying a lot of attention to the sceneries passing me by. But it caught my eye all the same. A handsome brick building with an attractive blue door, timeless light globes in the window. And the graphics, what did they say? Was it coffee? It all looked so promising that I whipped the van around and in no time, I was asking the guys unpacking furniture outside if they were open. No they said. I'll just walk around and look in the windows I said. And then they were running to unlock the front door and pulling me in with a handshake and apparently I was some sort of special guest of some sort. The rest is history. They let me in and they weren't even open. They paused their training to make me a pour-over and they didn't even charge me. They gave me a guided tour of the place and I was only a stranger off the street. This is the experience I was looking for without even daring to hope. Quite disappointing to find that after purchasing a $ 3.05 "large" ( standard decaf coffee / no added frills ) to pair with my cinnamon roll , to have an additional charge of 50 cents just to add a teaspoon of regular milk and one pack Of artificial sweetener to the coffee . I guess that I shall return to the Starbucks located in the Barnes & Noble bookstore in Ontario . Their cup size is larger , and the milk and sweetener are free . Coffees are pre-brewed which helps keep the line and drive thru moving but pour over is available. I'm a tea drinker and there is a good selection of herbal and robust black teas. Really love the decor and style of the shop! The food is also so so good (we usually get the breakfast sandwich without bacon, cookies, and cinnamon roll) and drinks are good too! So far we have tried the iced chai, iced caramel latte with almond and whole milk, iced tea, and bottled water which were all really good! The only reason I gave 4 stars is that sometimes my stomach hurts afterwards but everyone else I go with doesn't have that issue so maybe it's me!
