Holy moly. This restaurant is great. My husband and I needed to grab a quick bite and walk the dog. We landed at this spot. I ordered the southwestern cheeseburger and my husband ordered the American sandwich with lettuce wrap. I was really impressed with how delicious my burger was. Perfectly cooked to medium-rare with bacon, cheese, and chilies! It wasn't spicy at all, I want to say it was a hatch chili? Either way, the flavor was amazing. Smoky, creamy, juicy. My husband's burger was massive. They were very generous with the lettuce wrap. He ate every piece of his massive burger. The burgers include fries and there was a lot! We couldn't finish it! Solid 4.5/5 place, 4/5 if it was in the city We stopped by on our way to Sedona and we're pleasantly surprised to find Nichols West. It's pretty much in the middle of nowhere so we had fairly low expectations. We came right around 11:00 so my husband wanted breakfast but I wanted lunch. They accommodated both of us but let me know my lunch item would be coming out after his breakfast item. No problem since we shared both dishes. He got the eggs Benedict. The sauce was okay, but the Canadian bacon was super thick cut and delicious. The English muffin could be toasted more. We got the hash browns extra crispy and it was amazing. I got a burger with arugula, lettuce, and jalapeños. The buns were super thick and toasty, with a crunch that held up until the last bite. The patty was thick and cooked to a perfect medium. The veggies were crisp and fresh. Overall, this was a SOLID burger. It was $16 but well worth the price. The fries were fresh and crispy too. Nichols West is pretty modest but it had a few nice touches that made the experience better: super thick napkins, fresh cracked black pepper for the table, modern sinks in the bathroom. Found this place on Yelp on our drive from Vegas to Phoenix a little off the beaten path but totally worth it. Food was delicious, service friendly. Prices reasonable. I found it charming and we were very glad we stopped. read more

Beautiful patio! Great spot to eat after hiking the Granite Mountain Memorial trail. The patio was a beautiful surprise. For some reason everyone else was sitting inside- maybe a bit cold out for the locals in December. Everything looked good so we decided to order a few things to share. The zucchini chips were delicious. The breading tastes similar to fried calamari, and they come with a tangy dipping sauce. The French onion soup was also wonderful with lots of melted cheese on top and croutons underneath. We also had the al pastor tacos. They came with four tacos - perfect for sharing. The waitress did say the other tacos come with only three. I also had to try the key lime pie based on the Yelp reviews. Ok.... We decided to go back today and give this place another chance. I wanted to give a very honest review and thought my first visit was a fluke. It actually turned out to be worse! It was around 3:30 and we were escorted to a booth by a blaze' girl. No smiles or warmth. The table wobbled and hubby found some plastic wedge under the table to stop the wobble. I then asked what was on tap and the girl who seated us announced the tap wasn't working. I ordered a Blue Moon. The girl (who was not our server) brought me a bottle of Blue Moon without a glass. I had to ask her for one. That wasn't so bad but while she was running around I noticed the table was on a downward incline. It didn't bother my hubby but it did me! I did not complain. I also noticed the restaurant had flies buzzing around everywhere. Server came out who was very friendly and we ordered calamari to start. It was absolutely delicious while we whooshed away the flies. Sorry but I didn't get a photo of it. We then ordered ramen soup. Hubby ordered shrimp and I had chicken. I had noticed it on the menu the first time we came and wanted to try it. The soup came out nice and hot and full of ingredients. They were each $16 as I recall and thought fairly priced. However, my soup was bland. No real chicken taste at all. Then shortly after I got started a fly nose bombed into my soup. Hubby saw it happen and told me before I took another bite. He dished it out so we could show it. The server came by and I told her what happened. She said " Yeah, they are really bad this time of year especially since we are rural. Then off she went without offering a discount or replacement. I think this out of the way restaurant has a lot of potential but if they keep going like this I fear they not last much longer. Charming little place with plenty of options. We got the fish and chips and coconut shrimp and both were very good. The staff is very friendly and they came over frequently to check in on us. Heading home to Prescott, but brief pitstop for lunch. Our smiling and attentive server, Cindy, suggested the Brie and Avocado Cheeseburger, and the Bruschetta Cheeseburger ( with homemade salsa.) Ordered the mini N.Z.lamb ribs appetizer with house made mint pesto to go, to enjoy later for dinner. Disappointed that they were out of homemade Pineapple Rum cake, but shared and enjoyed the Key Lime pie. The geek behind the bar gave us every reason to not eat a meal at Nichols West. Without us asking he told us we will not get served before the customers before us! OMg!!! I've never expected to get served before any customer before us. Here's another one. He also mentioned "Without a reservation the party with a reservation will get served before us". A group of neighbors and I went there after hiking the Granite Mountain Hotshots Trail. It doesn't look like much from the outside but the food is amazing and the service was outstanding. What happen? I used to love this restaurant. We went for lunch today service was none. Like the waitress hated working there. The food was completely bland. I ordered a burger which I have had before it was rare and I ordered Medium no flavor. My husband got the patty melt which the bread was soggy and the meat again tasteless. On top of that it was 40.00 for a burger and a patty melt. That would be fine if it tasted great. Sad cause I always stopped here. read more

We were skeptical given the up and down reviews but we had a great experience and will definitely be back. I had the classic burger (lettuce wrap) and fries. It was delicious! Hand-formed patty cooked the way I requested. It was nice and juicy! My husband had the pot pie and said it was very good. It was nice and thick but he likes his good a bit more flavorful. Lots of chicken and veggie chunks. The service was wonderful. Our waitress was quite shy but very attentive and pleasant. I noticed the other waitress to be the same. All in all, great job. I feel sad writing this but others (and the new owner) should know that this once tasty restaurant now serves super bland low quality food. A skilled chef or cook really look forward to special menus and you normally can tell when they are prepared with care and pride. This wasn't the case for our new year's menu. Every plate was unremarkable. The steak was completely bland and tasteless. The lobster tale was rubbery, poorly cooked and of poor quality. The cioppino (which used to be fabulous) tasted like hunts tomato sauce out of a can with little to no seasoning. The appetizers, soup and desert suffered from the same lack of imagination and taste. Sadly I won't be back. The 15 dollar lunch for two at In N out Burger was hundreds of times better than this 200 dollar meal. read more

My wife and I are from Phoenix and were in Congress attending a Recreational Vehicle Seminar and decided to try this place for lunch! OMG, you can't find quality this good often times even in Phoenix. We sat on the outdoor patio and it was soon lovely. My wife had the salmon and beet salad and I had fish tacos! I used to love this place but after last nights experience I'm rethinking recommending them. Dinner took 3 hours. Waitress didn't take our order for an hour and then another hour plus before food came out. I don't know how you screw up a hamburger but they did. First of all I Love this restaurant but..... Mayb its help oriented...I hope they can figure it out. I've noticed the restaurant getting dirtier over past several years after death of the original owner. Its now pretty obvious. The attention to detail gone. I recently came for breakfast. Ugh. GREASE. Hashbrowns were put in fryer. Grilled English Muffin drenched and dripping w oil. Plate was swimming in oil. Even the egg omelet had no flavor other than oil. The waiter and waitress were lovely and very attentive. That being said, the food was so-so. I had a steak sandwich, the meat was tender, the bread tasty, the flavor overall... meh. I'm not sure what happened to this restaurant. We used to purposely stop here on our way to or from California. We love supporting small businesses. We stopped by on Sunday night. I did appreciate the waitress telling us that the steak wasn't good so we should order a different item. We both ordered hamburgers. When we got them the fries were not fresh and the waitress said that she would be happy to bring us some fresh ones as soon as they were done. Nice gesture. The new ones were in a little bowl for us to share. They were hot and crispy. Here is where it went south. The burgers were fine nothing special. I had the one with goat cheese and sautéed onions. It was very dry. Could have used some sauce. Hubby enjoyed his southwest burger. I gave him a quarter of my burger and in his last bite he pulled a long dark hair out of his mouth. Ick! When a young lady came by and asked us about our meal we pointed out the long hair that we put in a bowl to show them. I understand stuff like that happens but we could hear the young lady tell our waitress about it and she told the chef which sounded like Ugh, now I have to deal with the customer. Our waitress never came back nor could we get her attention. She sent the poor girl back with our check (which was billed incorrectly so we needed her to change it). Never did she even come by to say gosh sorry about the hair. Having our own businesses we understand that sometimes things happen but you do need to address it and try to make the customer happy. Wow! Before the original owner passed on to the great kitchen in the sky, this place was worth an hour's drive just for lunch. It's obvious that the new owner isn't on location, as this isn't the same restaurant. We were seated quickly, and drinks were promptly delivered. There were only 3 occupied tables, and two of those were mid course. After 10 minutes, we had to find the waitress. While she was pleasant, she was tediously slow and didn't check up on us while we were eating (it was quicker to get your own refill than wait). The item we wanted most wasn't thawed, so we had to change our order. As it took nearly a half hour for the burger and salad, how much longer could it have taken to prepare our original order?! There was absolutely nothing special about this lunch. If this had been our first experience, we never would have recommended it so fiercely to our friends.
