I went to NICA AND SAM Salon for the first time today. And don't want to sound like a cliche, but HAD TO WRITE.
FIRST, THE CUT. I hate to use hair lingo but in general, it was a longish bob slightly graduated with bangs. (Imagine Joan Jett but for 2010 and with expert technique) It's sexy but not overtly so, properly modern without being too tragic hipster, interestingly unique without being too contrived. Young-ish, fresh, lovely details and original accents, on the edgy side but not tackily so...
It felt entirely original. Not at all a cookie cutter formulaic cut. Perhaps the concept was akin to some great hair you might see on some celebs (mine was closest to Nicole Ritchie in her long bob days, with Gwen Stefani in her long grunge bob days, with Joan Jett inspiration and Kate Moss easy-going chic). The shape, the sophisticated layers, the texture, the feel, long pieces here there, the perfectly imperfect imperfections, every last detail. All this from saying - I'm in the mood for rocker, longish to the shoulder, big bangs, and that I'm pretty much just wash and go - let the chips lie where they fall type hair person etc! I ended up with a haircut that really reflected me. And the right change i was looking for. SECOND, SAM. After my experience there. And all my past experiences, I found he had the ability to marry excellent skill, sophisticated technique, personal creativity, made to order originality, with consideration for what the client wanted, their personal style, their personality, all together to make a super successful result. THAT IS HARD TO FIND!
He is also extremely personable but focused and intent, listens to me babble about hair, takes it all in, and masterfully makes it good hair. Sometimes the stylist is great but won't listen or will listen to the client too much and not exercise enough judgement. It's a difficult balance.
THIRD, THE SALON. It's located on 9th Ave between 50th and 51th Aves. An unlikely place for a gem like this. But it is open, relaxing, inviting yet no nonsense. Not at all gimmicky or pretentious. Lovely vibe and atmosphere that I felt reflected their approach to hair in a way! Everyone is lovely by the way. Not pushy at all etc. Genuine even!BOTTOM LINE. It's a craft. And this is guy is on point. I rarely have a salon experience where the stylist hits the mark like nothing. And this was it. I highly recommend him. It is pricey. But in this case truly reflects the level of quality. In fact, I think it's reasonable. A good value even! Worth every penny in my opinion. You will pay this much elsewhere for a total crapshoot.
This was my first time there. So I look forward to trying it again in several months. I sometimes like to see how the cut grows out. A great cut changes personality as it grows and in lovely ways too.
NOTE.
I've been to Bumble (only certain people there are good. The $150 guys are the best, and they don't hold a candle to SAM), Toni & Guy (very average) and the likes, Aveda.. All over-rated hair mills without much inspiration unless you get that one shining star that's on their way to bigger and better things so won't be around long.Hair friends (I also get awesome avant garde cuts from friends. They always have great style, originality, and uniqueness but lack the technique and skill that you can get from expert stylists like SAM. The difference is amazing.).
That secret guy down in the EV who cuts hair in a salon with an unmarked storefront in a stark white almost unreal movie-like setting.
And by far, SAM's level of artistry, skill, and technique (All with the ability to make that critical decision about what will work and what the client will ultimately like) are star level. 10X TO SAM FOR CHANGENG MY LIVE! read more
