Small Mexican food truck tucked in an alley near Gold Dust Meridian on Hawthorne. There's 2 little tables for seating. The owner was nice enough but the 3 tacos just wasn't very good. I ordered the chicken, Al pastor, and steak. The chicken left a weird after taste in my mouth for a long time after the meal and had a bone in it. The al pastor meat was very tough. The steak was ok. With so many good options in Portland, I won't be returning. read more

Wanted a burrito and Portland doesn't have good Mexican food. Let's be honest. But I gotta say. As a last minute before I pick up my kids from school and this place is next door situation. This actually was perfect. I held no pre conceived notion of how this was going to go. But the dude was honest about his pork. The seasoning on his pork was great. His burrito is well done. And the salsa that came with it was probably one of the better ones I've had in town. This was an experience that may leave me a little bit more hopeful. Throw in some free chips? THEY MAKE FANTASTIC TACOS!! $1.50 for pollo or pastor (they were my favorite), or $2 for asada. All the meats are nicely marinated and/or seasoned, the onion, cilantro and salsa are all fresh, and the the tortillas are warm & soft. I was about to get what I now understand to be sub par tacos at a popular spot up the street, but they had an hour wait. So I looked for other spots that I hadn't tried yet that had a high rating, which led me to Neza. And wow. Those are the freshest and most delicious tacos I've ever had in Portland. And it's only $5 for 3! I was about to pay $12 for 3 and wait an hour for something that can't even touch these. You can tell that they are made with pride and love. Came to Portland with relatively low expectations for Mexican food compared to LA. Stopped by here for a chicken torta and was blown away by the quality and flavor of everything from the actual sandwich to the flavor of the salsas. Solid food and great value for price. I got the chicken burrito, and I was surprised by the weight - heftier than the burrito from Chipotle! The meat was tender and well seasoned. This is the hot food stand that you don't know about. If you like food stands, then messing with this one is a must. Walking south on Hawthorne, before you hit 32nd and the Belly Timber restaurant, there will be a sign on the sidewalk pointing you into an alley. The cart is white, with a neon 'open' sign. This is where you find the dankest burrito you've ever had...it makes you feel kinda dangerous. Raul knows exactly what he's doing. I had the pork burrito for 4 bucks...it was fresh, had cilantro, and was wrapped nicely to go. The horchata was exceptional as well. This is next on your list of food carts to try. You're gonna be on Hawthorne anyway, and this is your spot. Give Raul my regards. read more

Lovely man who runs this cart - incredibly sweet, friendly, & goes out of his way to help customers - there is no surly Portland attitude here! As for the wares, the al pastor tacos & tortas are very authentic, the salsas are fresh, the veggie options are plentiful, & the portion sizes are just right - I'm not a fan of the 5# burrito that leaves you feeling like you can't move! I have also noticed that the portions don't leave me with that carbo-afternoon-hangover feeling - you know the one: all you can do after lunch is take a nap? Not here. I found the food to be energizing & tasty. It doesn't hurt that it is literally around the corner from my house, but it sure helps to know that I can get all my errands done on Hawthorne & get some tasty lunch (usually with change left over). This place has the best "al pastor" tacos in Portland. ( I feel I'm qualified to make this claim because I am from Mexico and have traveled to every corner of Mexico. In addition, I have been to at least 25 Mexican restaurants and taquerias in portland so I have a solid frame of reference). The marinate is done to perfection and the fresh cilantro and onion bring out the flavor so nicely. The tortillas are also very tasty and fresh. This place puts "porque no" tacos to shame. The best next thing to Neza would be Authentica but you would be paying three or four times the price. I have also had their tortas and have been quite impressed. The combination of high quality fresh bread, beans, avocado, other fresh veggies, and superbly marinated meats makes this a great alternative to their tacos. Raul, the owner, is very friendly and knows a lot of their customers by name. He takes a lot of pride on his cooking and that is clearly reflected on the fantastic taste of his highly authentic Mexican street food. read more

I have a three strikes policy when it comes to restaurants and/or carts. That is: I will not continue to patronize a place that makes me sick three times. (Although, to be honest, I will usually blacklist a place after one time.) I really, really wanted to like Neza. The food is pretty tasty and the prices are reasonable. That's the reason I tried three different things (Chicken fajita, spinach, and veggie burritos) on three visits over several months. However, I don't have enough toilet paper to allow my relationship with Neza to continue. I won't be back. read more

WOW! that is some GOOOD mexican food. and i am a mexican food SNOB. i haven't liked any mexican food i've found in portland AT-ALL. and this place is awesome. i had a chicken burrito. the rice was perfect, the beans were cooked right, the salsa was nice, he used good cheese. but you know what the best part was? he used lime. it was this whole blend of flavors and the lime held the whole ensemble together. and the burrito was big and cheap, just how i like them. oh, and i almost forgot about the horchata. that blew me away. it was the perfect blend of spices. and it wasn't all watered down either. it was amazing and i could've drank a gallon. the owner said he cooks his mother's recipes and i believe that. he's also a really nice guy which makes a lovely experience even better. and he gave me this card where if you buy 10 the 11th's free which is nice. i LOVE this place (in case you couldn't tell) and you will too. read more

Well, my search for the best and most authentic Mexican took me to this little red taco truck on Hawthorne. And a good thing, too, as the tacos here are quite delicious. The al pastor was superb and the carne asada and pollo very good as well. Vegetarian tacos lovers may want to look elsewhere, however, as the rice/beans/salsa veggie taco was just alright. That said, good veggie tacos are hard to come by unless you add soycurls. All tacos are straight-forward meat+onion+cilantro. The two bottles of hot salsa were good. No salsa bar. The people who own/operate this truck as very sweet and kind. There are two metal tables with umbrellas out front of the truck for seating. Tacos are $2 each unless you get three or more and then they're $1.50. Yes please. Note: The phone number for orders to go is 503-501-0191. You can probably call to see if they're open if you've struggled with their hours in the past. All in all, this is near the top of my Mexican food experience in PDX. Highly recommended. read more

The tacos are highly overrated, but the food is really cheap so I can understand the appeal. Tacos are pretty standard street size; I came hungry and needed about 5 tacos to get filled up. The seasoning is good but the meat's dry, and to make up for it, the tacos are served with more of the cooking oil. Tortillas aren't handmade, fluffy, or savory. In the summer, they ran out of horchata at 11:45 AM, which is pretty early in the day to be out of something. Service is slow because like most carts, you have one or two people managing the entire operation. As a cart, it's nice they offer seating (two tables, two chairs at each table), but seats fill up quickly around lunch time.The location is great and parking's doable, even being on Hawthorne. Neza offers an affordable snack, but you won't find the world's best tacos here. read more
