I had actually been to this location previously and forgot but my father had also been to this location recently and told me that he enjoyed the venue and the food. The establishment has been well maintained and the staff is extremely nice. The restrooms were constantly being restocked and cleaned. The location has plenty of conference rooms and meeting spaces which can be reserved. An extra super duper bonus: the food. There are at least three lines that conference patrons can go through and they are continually refilling the food. What I loved was that everything was clearly marked and underneath the food item it stated if it was vegetarian or vegan. Throughout the day they also put out snacks such as vegetables and ranch and other goodies. There is also a well stocked fridge with beverages which are available all day in addition to coffee and tea. One way to improve? Offer gluten free deserts.

Having recently been introduced to Kiln by Yelp, I went and spent the afternoon there today as I…read moretook Zoom meetings, phone calls, worked on a project, and responded to e-mails. I was welcomed as a guest, walked around the property, enjoyed the space and afternoon snacks, and learned a lot during my visit. From when I arrived to the (free) parking garage's third floor and walked along the pathway which brought me straight into Kiln, I found that everything about the space made sense. As I entered Kiln, I saw a number of people working out in the open or in the nearby enclosed spaces. I kept walking until I came across an area to check in. I signed in as a guest and had a delightful conversation with Renee, who I met at a Yelp event where she was introduced on behalf of Kiln. Renee walked me through everything I needed to know about the space, what to do with cups, plates, etc. when I was done with them, when snacks were coming out, what events were taking place, and which spaces she'd recommend I use based on the sort of work I'd be doing. The other Kiln staff were also very welcoming. I also bumped into a Yelp friend while I was there who was also checking out the space today. There were several large open areas with seating from large community tables to smaller individual tables to comfortable chairs, all with charging ports. There are then reservable larger spaces for team meetings, conference rooms, creative spaces, and large group spaces. Individuals and companies can also reserve their own permanent spaces. I used what are called phone booths as they resemble old-fashioned phone booths with lighting, a desk for a laptop or anything else, and a chair. Some of the phone booths had a ring light that could be connected to a laptop using a USB cord. There weren't charging ports, but I understand that the goal isn't for someone to be in a phone booth for too long. Guests may bring their own food from home or from a restaurant downstairs or even purchase quality food from Kiln directly. There is a space with a fridge, freezer, microwave, and other means to heat or cool food or drinks. Anyone is welcome to complimentary coffee, hot chocolate, water, tea, and snacks, which are offered in the morning and afternoon. The afternoon snacks were put out while I was there with a variation of something similar to Chex Mix and either salami or prosciutto-covered cheese. While I found it easy to make hot chocolate, I did have trouble using the machine though I feel confident that was user error (just me!). The restrooms were just outside the front entrance though they were set up with fancy options including mouthwash, dental floss, mints, and even two-ply toilet paper. All in all, when I first walked into the Kiln Biltmore last week, I really had no idea what to expect as I have never used such a workspace before. Referred to as a "boutique cowering and flex office community," this space is really a space full of spaces where someone can co-work with some amazing amenities. They boast "unique gathering spaces, event spaces, a fitness room, A/V equipped conference rooms, an A/V studio, refresh rooms, and a dynamic and thriving community supported by a robust calendar of networking and wellness events." I didn't get around to learning about the price plans for being a Kiln member though I know there are a number of different options. I am hoping to come back again next week, so I can inquire about membership options at that point in time. Thanks again to Kiln Biltmore and their staff for such a welcoming experience!

I used to get really excited for Arizona Restaurant Week. Still, I lost my enthusiasm after I would…read moregain 10 pounds in a week (truly!) and the fact that many of the set menus feature items I wouldn't ordinarily order. For example, I rarely order dessert, and many menus feature it. Events like Arizona Restaurant Week are suitable when a place is really offering a good value or when you have access to a venue that you wouldn't ordinarily be able to get into. Cue my reason for visiting the University Club of Phoenix. This is a members-only club (a four-year university degree is mandatory for membership as is a monthly membership fee of $125) that only opens up to non-members during select holidays and special events. I was advised to monitor their website for special group dinners that open up throughout the year that sounded pretty cool. I had tried to make a reservation here during the fall portion of ARW last year but it had filled up fast. Pro tip: The spring session of Arizona Restaurant Week is always a bit easier to snag reservations for as many snowbirds have already flown away. The other reason that I wanted to try it wasn't simply for snobbish reasons ("Darling, I have reservations at the University Club tonight") but also because of all the ARW menus on offer, theirs is a steal. For $44 a person, you get an alcoholic beverage (pro tip: order the wine over the beer as it costs more), an appetizer, a choice of an entree, and dessert (yup, I'll eat it if it's included!). When I arrived at the Club, I was just blown away to find it. This is truly a hidden gem for downtown Phoenix. The Heard Museum is next door and the residential tree-lined streets (of epic houses!) make this such a charming part of the city. Parking is a breeze as well. Before it opened as a private club in 1965, it was a residence. One of the servers told me that the original owners recently held an event here to reminisce and explained to the staff the changes that had occurred at the property since they sold it. I thought that was cool! I ordered the Caprese skewers which really should be billed as a Caprese salad. It was divine and the word that comes to mind with everything here is fresh. The chef is excellent and clearly takes pride in his craft. For my entree, I went with the prime rib. It was HUGE. I could not believe the size. The accompanying mashed potatoes and vegetable medley was just as good. My guests ordered the salmon which is a decent size and is served with maple sauce which brings out the sweetness of the fish. Creative and yummy! For dessert, we ordered both the cheesecake and the Key Lime pie. Both were good but I would vote for the cheesecake. And for wine, I did a glass of Malbec. The employees here are amazing. Most have worked here for decades (my server, Lourdes, has been working here for 20 years and she isn't even the longest-serving employee!). I changed my reservation about three times and each time was, "No problem!" (this may not be the case every time but Friday night was not too busy). The servers love chatting with guests and will even give you a brief tour of the property. I also got plenty of other restaurant recommendations, too! Other reviews have mentioned that the property is somewhat dilapidated. It's true that the property is in need of a refresh but there is also something quite wholesome and authentic about it. It's not putting on airs, simply serving quality food with exceptional service. The site can be rented for special events and I would see that as being more of an issue if you were hosting something like a wedding (although the backyard is magnificent!). All in all, my visit to the University Club of Phoenix exceeded expectations. It's hard to find something else like this in the Valley. It's a throwback to a different era when people gathered around a dining table and actually engaged in conversation with each other instead of peering into their smartphones. And to my amazement, they are even open for breakfast and lunch. I can't wait to go back!
