OK, Stan the owner is a straight forward, good guy. This is…read morea budget car rental place. The cars are older with high miles, worn, and scratched up. We were in Anchorage in peak tourist season and all the name brand car rental companies were sold out. We found A1Rental and he had a ford Taurus. He picked us up in about 15 min from our hotel. We arrived at his lot to find a 2006 Taurus with 100'000 miles on it, and lots of scratches, and some duct tape. The interior had some old cigarette burns. Stan stated if we put some more scratches on it, it was no problem. Being short on options we said yes. The rental was straight forward with no hassle or BS. It did run us $80 per day. (Name brand rentals in Anchorage started at $120, plus taxes and fees.) The car did us good for our three days, with no mechanical problems, but the front tires were about bald, it felt like it needed some ball joint work, the windshield fluid did not work, the AC did not work, and the windshield wiper somewhat worked(needed new blades). I was a bit worried about the car possibly breaking down. Overall it worked for us with no major mechanical issues. We felt the cost was to much for this car. If you want a nice newer car this is not for you. If you want a car you don't need to baby around, worry about any scratches, you want the cheapest price in town, or you are out of options at other car rentals. If your going out on gravel roads. Then this may be for you.

Called Stan and was immediately put off by his demeanor and attempts to convince me that I couldn't…read moreget a car elsewhere, so I told him "thanks but I'll look around." Then I read the reviews on Yelp (check out his previous page "A-1 Car Rentals" before he made a new page without the hypen) and on Google, which confirmed my decision. THEN, I am getting hammer called by this guy on my cell phone, no voicemail, just repeated phone calls over multiple days. His number is now blocked. What a nightmare it must be to actually rent from him....

I typically dread car rentals whenever I travel, but here at the airport Thrifty I was treated with…read moreexceptional customer service. A big shout out to the employee (I think his name was Pepe or Pepa or something like that...) for making everything very smooth. I rented the car through Thrifty online, and he made checking in and paying on the spot simple. I was not hit with any unexpected fees, just $33 for a full sized car, and he informed me of the $200 charge on my credit card as a security deposit that would be returned after the rental. Thank you Pepe! Car was very smooth overall and returned without any problems.

Some lady picked up (Filipino accent), I told her my flight was arriving one hour earlier and if I needed to change the time, she said yes. She confirmed that she changed it to one hour earlier at the end of the conversation. I made sure by repeating to her. We get there on 8/12, and I check in, the younger lady at the Hertz counter told me that she can't check me in bc the reservations is an hour earlier the next day. OMG. She told us we can't check in and they are not ready for us and have no cars available. Come back the next day. I explained the situation and she sees someone at "corporate" made the change. Honestly I bet she made the mistake and doesn't want to own up to it. I pleaded with her to let us check in early, as due to the new flight we'll be returning it early too. She basically said too bad for you. Come back tomorrow. Even though there were signs that said you can check in early there will be an extra charge. Fine by me! My friend and I sat at the chairs deciding what our next move is. I checked Expedia and was looking at rebooking and they had some available for that same day. My friend said she's gonna try our luck with the male staff at the thrifty booth. She explained everything and he was understanding and he said we can check in early. He was an older gentleman, bigger built. He let us check in early and what do you know, there's a car available. I really think the younger lady didn't want to help us. She's a du*b b*tch with no sympathy. I will never rent from the Hertz booth, where she was at. She was horrible. Our car rental went well. We got a small compact Nissan Versa, older side with no Apple car play. Slow to accelerate but held up for our 750 miles total road trip. It was so slow we called the car butt plug for the weekend.
