If you're looking for a trustworthy, comprehensive, clean camper for a memorable vacation, look no…read morefurther than Northern Nomads and book your camper vehicle today! We needed something easy to drive and maneuver around for a busy 5 day trip. We debated about RV vs van camper and I'm so so glad we chose a camper van with this "company". I put "company" in air quotes bc even though it is a business, it didn't feel that way. You can tell immediately this is a personal venture - Clinton was extremely prompt with any communication. We booked through outdoorsy.com and there was a system glitch two days before our arrival so my husband emailed Clinton and he called back very shortly afterwards to explain and confirm our van and dates of reservation. He picked us up at the airport (with a 6 am arrival time no less! He also dropped us off back at the airport) and then took his time to review the contract and functionality of the camper. He was thoughtful and thorough and very responsive. Felt like everything had a personal touch to it and he was honest. The camper is extremely well equipped. Bed is comfortable, and comes with pillows, sheets and an amazing comforter. There are drapes for privacy which was great to block out the night time light (since the sun sets so late here in the Summer; they're not black out drapes and we were told that from the get go. Again, honest owner ) and adds privacy when we parked (drapes blocks out the front and side windows). There is a pump sink, all the major cooking pots and cast iron pan (!), coffee pot, propane portable grill, table for eating inside and folding table for grilling roadside. Large cooler also comes with. Recessed lighting and surround sound with Bluetooth connection means you're one click away from a van party (Seriously. The bass is legit.). Comes with plugs and usb connection and axillary battery to charge all your mobile devices. The van is smooth to drive (okay, I admit, I didn't drive it, but my husband loved it and said it was easy to use and drive). We averaged 25-30 miles a gallon (which is amazing for a van). It was clean, quiet, and totally met and exceeded our needs and expectations! #glamping Hands down if we come back again, we will be looking to rent from Northern Nomads again. They won't leave your stranded. Clinton was telling us how he's looking into a spare van/camper to make sure people who book with him won't be stranded should there be an issue with the van (ex. Tire issue, bull moose crash - these are real examples). You spend a lot of time, money and energy getting to the last frontier, you want to make sure it's a solid trip. THIS will give you a home to stay while maximizing your time in Alaska!

Thank goodness. Tom and John did a GREAT Job on setting me up to get out on the road. They worked within my schedule, did many little extra convenient things that made my camper so much better. They made excellent suggestions for safety and maintenance, which I happily agreed to. Their workmanship is superb! They kept me apprised on the progress. I am overjoyed with the results and thought their fees were very reasonable. If you ever need any RV work done, this is the place! I would post a picture, but it is already on the road, being used by my daughter! THANK YOU, TOM AND JOHN!

I love to camp. But frankly, RV "camping" is a concept I don't quite grasp. However, something…read moreweird is going on with the bears this year (I'm sure it's related to the weird weather and food scarcity), so my honey decided to surprise me with a last minute RV rental. I was really shocked he was able to find a same day available RV to rent in June, since RV's reservations are made MONTHS in advance in the summer in Anchorage. He scoured the internet and found this teeny mom n pop company listed on Outdoorsy.co (not .com) that had an RV immediately available. He was able to make his reservation and payment on line and the RV was ready for pickup a few hours later. We showed up to pick up the RV at 6pm and I have to say, the place looked sketchy. There's no signs, not office and the lot is way in the back down a bumpy dirt road. But, everything actually turned out to be fine. The fleet is a little older, but the owner Tom is a mechanic and keeps everything running fine. It's quite a bit cheaper than some of the other places in town with newer fleets. We're hardcore Alaskans that don't believe in glamping; we just wanted hard sided protection from wildlife. Tom's and his helper spent a long time with us giving us the RV 101 orientation, which was awesome. The RV had everything we needed, although I do wish it had USB chargers. Note to self, bring a cell charger that plugs into the cig lighter. But everything was a-ok. We had all the kitchen doodads we needed, and since we mentioned Yelp we got free linens. Insurance was included. Tom made us very safe and let us know if we had any issues or questions we could call or text day or night. He also said he'd provide roadside assistance should we need it. I really appreciated the personalized service. If you like supporting the little guy, I highly recommend giving Alaska Family Motorhomes a shot! We'll definitely rent from them again if the need arises.

This was a our first time sleeping in a rooftop tent and at first I hated it - After three days I LOVED it! So much so that now we're shopping for a RTT of our own. Both the hubby and I have been off-roading in our 1996 Landcruiser so we are very experienced drivers. When we rented Nanook the caster/alignment was off which made driving straight a bit of a challenge. Craig did note the issue as he was driving over to pick us up. We made sure to remind Craig about the issue when we returned Nanook. When you rent these rigs just understand that you're renting the bare minimum when it comes to kitchen setup. No seasonings except salt and pepper, no hot pads, etc. Our rig did not include measuring cups and we were mostly cooking freeze dried meals so we stopped at Target and bought some. When we returned the rig, we left the cups so hopefully the next person who rents Nanook will have measuring cups. Also Nanook's cook set is stainless steel so when you cook eggs in the morning - Good Luck and cleaning... Would have much preferred that the cook set was non-stick but it is what it is. Thankfully we are not big coffee drinkers but the coffee pot they include is too small the large burners on the stove. So we used the pots to boil water for tea and hot coco. Overall renting from Alaska Overlander was an incredible experience and we already want to come back and rent with them again to explore more of Alaska. Alaska Overland is an excellent option when you either can't take enough time off of work to drive your own truck up to Alaska OR if you don't have an off-road truck at all. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Outside of food, beverages and spices the Denali came with everything we needed for an upgraded off road camping adventure. The tent was comfortable and easy to set up along with the awning and it was great having a fridge with its own dedicated power source. Over the course of amazing trip we did not experience any issues and the Denali was a comfortable ride for some of the longer drives. Plenty of outlets and plug options for charging up gear on the road. The staff were super helpful and informative and we even got to use a brand new portable propane fire pit and camper shell. Highly recommended and looking forward to coming back for an even longer road trip.

GORGEOUS National Park campground. When people imagine camping, this is probably what most people…read morethink of. These campsites are all of a gracious size and some of them have spectacular views of Porcupine Creek in Resurrection Bay. Be sure to make reservations (online or over the phone) ahead of time or you will probably not get a spot and end up and the Seaview RV Park instead. Porcupine Campground is nicely wooded and many of the spots give a real sense of privacy which is surprisingly hard to find in a lot of campgrounds in South Central Alaska. They seem to think that since the state is so big we must all like to be crammed together like sardines (safety in numbers?) Thankfully, Porcupine Campground allows plenty of room so you can stretch out and relax. Tent spots are $15 per night, plus a $9 booking fee if you book ahead. Pay the booking fee or take a HUGE chance there won't be any spots for you. You can check online first before you take the drive if you don't have a reservation.

There is a camp host in the summer that will sell wood and collect camp fees. Will come to camp again.

Jason Rose reviewed Crooked Creek Guide Service, Cabins and RV Community --…read more I thought "Crooked Creek" referred to a body of water where the guide service is located. However, after dealing with this company I think that "Crooked" is actually a term I would describe the manager and the owner. It is my understanding there have been numerous "extraordinary" events which would keep Warren from returning phone calls. Instead he would simply screen the calls. However, when someone eagerly takes money for a service and then refuses to answer the phone, texts, and emails I find no excuse. I have been waiting to fulfill a dream of a guided Alaskan fishing trip for more than 20 years. When I spoke to Warren (Gen Mgr) at the Sportsman's show in Boise he was very friendly. He gladly took my information and my money. However when a hiccup arose, he refused to answer any of the three phone numbers he'd given me. He did not answer emails. I spoke to him one time to try and rectify the situation, and he never called me back or answered. I finally had to dispute charges to my credit card. I hope those of you reading this will think twice about giving this company your business. If you do give the, money, I hope it works out for you, and you have a great fishing adventure. Caveat Emptor FYI: Crooked Creek received two horrible reviews on Facebook. I'd tell you to go read them, but it appears the management decided to erase the reviews from their page. Edit: recommend you read the Trip Advisor reviews. https://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g31028-d8671714-Reviews-Crooked_Creek_Guide_Service_Cabins_RV_Park-Kasilof_Alaska.html

Whether you like this campground or not depends on what you're looking for. If proximity to…read moreAnchorage, easy access to salmon fishing and easy trails, and safety in numbers are important to you, then this is a winner. Relative to a lot of other campsites with fishing access, the likelihood of bear encounters is SOMEWHAT less due to its direct proximity to the highway, and nominal greenway for bears to hide in. There's a small buffer of trees between the highway and the campground, so bears have adequate space to sneak up if they're so inclined (this is Alaska, after all) so the highway noise is noticeable from all of the campsites. (I did a very thorough walk through of the campground and the perimeter and found evidence of one black bear who appeared to be "passing through"). The only site you may not notice the sound of the highway would be the Beluga cabin, which backs up against the train tracks. Some campers may find trainsounds bothersome. I happen to like train noises, (I grew up 2 blocks from train tracks), but if the honking bothers you DO NOT CAMP HERE since the tracks are REALLY CLOSE. They have to honk to warm idiots that walk on the tracks. Alaskans and tourists alike seem to like to tempt fate and play chicken with the train. A few points to note- there's only one bear box for the whole campground. I find this REALLY IRRITATING, but a common theme at a lot of Alaskan campgrounds, despite the pleas to keep our campsites food and fragrance free. (Grrrr please supply more flipping bear boxes!!!!) There are 3 pit toilets; one dumpster ; you can pay with cash, check or credit card (there's an electronic pay station); the 2 cabins have to be paid for in advance on line; the campsite is within cell/internet service; in 2022 there is NO camp host which means the toilets are getting minimal servicing so BRING YOUR OWN TOILET PAPER (ans SANITIZER if you're a germiphobe like me), so be sure you have the firewood you need prior to arrival. You should bring your own drinking and washing water as well; the handpump here is the worst I've ever used and is need if some serious maintenance. It requires the strength if two men to get going- I think it needs to be oiled??? The water is gross anyway- better to get your washing water from a creek before arrival and brink bottle or tap water for drinking. Some of the sites do NOT accommodate tents due to the gravel and lack of trees. All the RV spots are back in, none are pull-through. The campground has a nice nature trail and connects with a paved bike trail. You can walk to the salmon fishing site down the street. There is also a village gas station, bar, motel, and two small restaurants within plus or minus a mile of the campground. For me, this campground is convenient given its proximity to Anchorage, although I think 20 bucks a night is a little steep given there's no host. I saw a lot of other Anchoragites of the same mind. We'll probably be back.
