I was so pleased to have an all-around good experience in general with Cheapwheels Rent-a-Car,…read moreespecially when I have read so many nightmare stories about renting a car in Alaska. I took one of their rentals to explore the south central portion of Alaska during a bucket list vacation in 2015. Not only were their prices highly competitive, but Mike & Cindy were a nice balance of no-nonsense & friendly. We chatted before I set out on my trip & once I returned the car. My rental was relatively new, in great condition, & gave me absolutely no trouble; on the contrary, it was quite the trooper for my 2-week road trip. I made sure to view the company's fine print & maps to ensure I wouldn't be traveling anywhere that wasn't allowed, so all went well for me. I am so grateful to Cheapwheels Rent-a-Car for providing a safe, comfortable, economical, & durable car so that I could have one of the best vacations of my life.

Avoid this place! First, they are overpriced - almost every other major car rental company in…read moreAnchorage is cheaper. Second, Cheapwheels forces you to buy their extremely pricey "insurance," which is void if you drive off-road (a problem for a state with so many B&B's that require driving on unpaved roads), and it requires a $1 to $2,000 deductible! No other car rental company requires such an outrageous deductible if you buy their coverage, and every reputable place will have basic insurance built into the rental cost itself. Additionally, Mike and Cindy are extremely shady and unethical businesspeople. Not only did they not explain how minimal their required "insurance" coverage is despite its exorbitant cost, but they also charge a $100 non-refundable deposit, which is unheard of in the car rental industry. This 'deposit' scheme was not adequately explained to me, of course, and was nowhere in writing. My credit card company is now attempting to get the money back after I had to cancel the reservation (after I found out about their shady insurance policy), and it is money that they basically stole.

Traveling…read morefrom Hawai'i with a large group of 17 people, we knew transportation--especially in winter conditions--would be critical. Safety was our top priority, and Robert exceeded every expectation in helping us plan the perfect solution. From the very first interaction, Robert's communication was professional, responsive, and incredibly thoughtful. He took the time to understand our group size, travel plans, and comfort level with snowy and icy driving conditions. Based on that, he recommended the ideal setup: a 15-passenger van paired with a beautiful GMC Yukon. This combination worked perfectly, allowing us to comfortably and safely transport our entire group--and all our gear--between Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport and Alyeska Resort in Girdwood. One of the most impressive aspects of our experience was the exceptional value. Not only were the rates very competitive compared to the national rental companies, but the level of personalized service we received was on an entirely different level. Robert and the Alaska 4x4 team provided hands-on guidance, tailored recommendations, and genuine care throughout the process--something you simply don't get with larger, corporate rental brands. The combination of fair pricing and truly customized service made this an easy choice and a standout experience. The convenience factor was also top-notch. The pickup process right at the airport was seamless and efficient, making arrival day stress-free. Drop-off was just as smooth--we were able to return the vehicles quickly and easily, giving us plenty of time to relax at the terminal before our flight. What truly stood out was the peace of mind. For a group coming from Hawai'i and not accustomed to winter driving, having reliable AWD/4x4 vehicles and expert guidance made all the difference. I cannot recommend Alaska 4x4 Rentals enough--whether you need dependable winter-ready vehicles or solutions for transporting a large group. We will absolutely be using them again on future trips and give them our highest recommendation.

Booked our car a month in advance over the phone - they weren't able to answer all our questions, but they were super kind. Pick-up at the airport was super easy and convenient. Had an issue with our rental car during our reservation, but Jane was absolutely incredible. She worked with us over the phone to fix the issue and get us squared away so we were good to go on the next portion of our adventure. Overall, they are a little pricier than other rental car companies, but we found that it was worth it. Highly recommend, would book from again.

We finally got to Anchorage and Ron couldn't have made the check in process better. We arrived, the jeep was waiting for us, paperwork was ready to go. After a brief conversation wife and I were on our way within 45 min, that's including them going over the process of how everything works. We spent 10 days going from Seward, to Whittier, to Denali, to Hatcher's pass, to Palmer and back...1,009 miles. When we returned the vehicle the check out process was super easy, again Ron even drove us to our hotel. This definitely was a trip full of memories and our 1st trip to Alaska. We thank you Ron for making it an easy and a pleasant experience for us.

Tbh we wanted to love this, it was our first time renting a camper van and we were super excited…read moreabout it. BUT we had so many small little problems with the jeep that it didn't make the whole Alaska experience awesome. John was great, he was super helpful and kind, really nothing to say about him, but Ron was another thing. We called him to tell him we had problems with the car and his response was pretty rude tbh, (I'm paying for the car to be working, right?) and his response was: if you don't want it we don't have another car, you can come back here but i don't promise anything, because we don't have more vehicles, So that's what you get. (like the car was for free). Our radio was broken, we even went to buy some aux cables because maybe it was just the radio, but no, the whole thing was damaged, so we had to buy a new speaker because a roadtrip without music? No fun! One of the windows had so much noise coming in, I don't know if they didn't seal it properly, but it was the most annoying part of the whole jeep, it was super LOUD, and the best of it all, they said it wasn't their fault, that it was "jeeps fault". If you are providing a service you have to make sure everything is perfect and works well, that's the minimum as a company. The right blinker on the front side was broken, the windshield had cracks, the lights on the tent and the sockets in the car weren't working. When we returned the car, we talked about all of these things and we ask for a discount or money back, and they gave as a 50 dollar bill, at that moment I didn't know if I had to laugh or cry. Just to make sure, we returned the car, EXTRA CLEAN, inside and outside, it's really nice that they give and provide utensils, pots, pillows and chairs (even tho one of the chair was broken) and we didn't fill the gas completely about 3/4 and the guy said it was alright because all of the things that happened and he dropped us in the airport. As I said before, you can't blame third parties when you are PROVIDING a service. It's your RESPONSIBILITY as a company to deliver and have good quality cars (in this case) we booked our jeep months in advance, so it wasn't a last minute thing, for that we expected a superb car with no issues. I hope they can fix those issues so nobody else has to deal with that :)

I told him that was not part of the agreement because I fulfilled my part of the agreement and I didn't owe him anything. he then proceeded to tell me how he didn't want my girlfriend in the car and on top of it when I asked him for my wallet and other person belongings he said everything was thrown in the trash at which point I found the trash can located on his locked and I literally took it with us but no wallet was found. He would not let me check in the vehicle until after he had went inside himself and took something out from the passenger side which was where my wallet was located. This guy was very rude and on more than one occasion continually attempted to talk down to me yelling and shouting over the phone anytime I try and ask him a question or give him an answer. I highly suggest to stay away from this car rental business because it's very shady very poor maintained cars and very very poor customer service. The car itself that it was rented to me was in a previous accident it's headlights barely worked the night that I got the car I had to fix the headlamps in order to barely see in front of the car. The battery ended up almost dying so I continually had to get a jump start. The front end was very very loose anytime you pressed on the brakes the wheels shook. Had to put antifreeze in the car ourselves. Stay away from Stan and a1 car rentals
