Hooray for Nextbike! Bringing cycling freedom to the people of Glasgow! When the bike-hire scheme popped up in 2014 I was super-keen to sign up, despite having a perfectly decent bike at home. Why? Well, I rarely take my bike into town, just using my wheels to "go cycling". Nextbike is "geared" (geddit?) towards getting about the city, although there's nothing to stop you keeping a bike all day and hitting up Loch Lomond, although the pricing "cranks"-up (last bike pun, honest!) for longer trips.
After you've availed yourself of a bike, you just return it to the nearest hire-location. Unlike taking your bike into town, you don't have to risk the law cycling home tipsy, or worry that your pride and joy is being dismantled for spares while you're out enjoying yourself.
Now, I just said "getting about the city", but the current coverage (January 2015) isn't exactly city-wide. The focus is City Centre, universities, West End, and selected tourist attractions. So it's not yet the perfect solution to commuting from the East End, or Southside. I understand more hire stations are planned in commuter areas (Dennistoun, yay!) so if this comes to fruition, the scheme will be perfect.
The bikes are great - solid, three gears, adjustable saddle, and equipped with lights. They're maintained by a local bike shop and ride well.
So how do you hire a bike? You sign-up online or through the smartphone app and register a payment card. Buy credit and pay-and-go, or snag yourself a subscription giving you unlimited 30 minute hires. Some employers and universities offer discounted subscriptions. Use the app to scan or enter the bike number and you'll get the code to unlock it. Go cycle, and be the envy of your feet-plodding contemporaries as you glide effortlessly through the city! (disclaimer: reality may differ, your mileage may vary). After your "vélo de ville", lock it at a station, register the return, and carry on your fabulous urban life!
If you don't have a smartphone (seriously??) you can use the on-bike computers or a buy a smartcard for a quid or so, but they're rubbish and don't work half of the time. You can even phone up if you're that way inclined.
Use your Nextbike registration to hire bikes in other cities too - but - TAKE NOTE -you won't get the free 30 minute hires even if you have a subscription, that only works in your home city ;-( This isn't mentioned on the website and I ended up paying to hire terrible rusty old bikes in Berlin when I thought it was free, it wasn't the end of the world though, and I'm over it now.
Overall an excellent scheme. And because the hire stations don't require much infrastructure (unlike the automated London scheme) it can be expanded easily, and you don't have the problem of finding a return-station full.
