So the week before, hubs and I scoured this tiny- but mighty shop at the corner of Tannery Brook Rd & Tinker St. in Woodstock. The size of this shop makes it cute. The location is cute. Hell, the products are cute. These ladies have a selection of minimalist-meets-unusual lifestyle and home items ranging from candles, door stoppers, jewelry, blankets, throws, outdoor mats and so much more done tastefully. This was almost a one-stop-shop place for us as we crossed some people off our Christmas list. Between the sofa pillow I got for my Mom, (2) small ceramic candle holders, a fuzzy scarf and tapered candles- things were looking good. Since my daughter's sorority's mascot is an Elephant, I also purchased her an Elephant wooden door stopper I couldn't pass up. List or not, I'd come back any other time to pick up something for myself.

Tucked just off of Broadway in Kingston, this little store is stocked with unique and creative items, not things you can purchase just anywhere. Merchandise changes with the seasons, so you can always find fresh gifts and goods. A standard item includes Beam watercolor paints, one of my favorite addictions. They also do screen printing lessons and other analog adventures so you can harness your creative vision in a way that is rare to find these days. It's well worth the 5-minute walk off of Broadway. It's a not-so-hidden gem.

I used to go just for the beautiful and unique Buddhas, but now I go for the clothing as well. I love the all-cotton , flowy ,asymmetrical cuts. Sexy. Plus, I always love mixing old and new items in my home decor because it just feels more personal and layered for me. That's where Isabella's Treasures in New Paltz came in around late Fall '24. I wanted my tree dressed in time for Thanksgiving dinner. Yes, I'm that person who puts up the tree at least the day before and lights it during dessert time to kick off the holiday season. To my surprise, Isabella's had exactly what I was looking for: vintage ornaments in the perfect colors- each one unique, full of soul, and priced reasonably in the $4 to $8 range. Totally worth it for pieces I won't find anywhere else. The shop itself is a cozy treasure trove, filled with everything from jewelry, textiles, to jewelry boxes- both new and vintage. There's also an attached room with vintage board games and clothing (though I'm not sure if that's part of Isabella's Treasures or a neighboring vendor). Isabella herself is a doll- super helpful, warm, and even gave me some background stories on the ornaments I purchased. It made the whole experience feel extra special, like I was taking home tiny heirlooms with their own little history.

If you ask me none of those options are all that appealing. With that being said there is hope in Rhinebeck, NY and that hope comes in an Oblong form! (Ok I'm not a comedian) Oblong is the answer to the all too often disconnected book store experiences of the present. This store serves as a sanctuary to those longing for the bookstore of the past ambiance. Tall stacks of books on display with index cards handwritten by the staff strategically placed to provide insight. A friendly staff who goes out of their way to assist you and even remembers you; that's how customer service should be! I recently purchased a book and came back two weeks later for a signing. Upon walking up to get in line a member of the staff recognized me and pinpointed that I was there two weeks prior to purchase to book. Talk about small town charm! Speaking of signings, they often host them as well as meet the author events with Q&A. If you need a book, a place to escape or a time machine to those better days gone past just take a trip to Rhinebeck and visit Oblong. You're welcome.
