Great Service!!!!! Great Food!!!!! The jalapeno cornbread muffins are to die for.......

My great-aunt Hettie White married Herman New in 1929. They established a service station on the north side of Meridian, Mississippi in the mid-1930s and transitioned that service station into a café in the early 1940s. As a teenager in the latter 1960s I ate countless meals there with Aunt Het still doing or overseeing much of the cooking. That was all the same establishment under the same name in the same building at the same location on Poplar Springs Drive that (with some expansion) is today's New's Restaurant. In 2013 a bar called Sports Page was opened in back. I have great memories of the wonderful comfort food New's provided during my adolescence and young adulthood. Thus I am especially disappointed that the quality of the food has not held up in more recent years. I will mention that the establishment is no longer in my family's hands. I now live four states away but visit Meridian a few times a year and as recently as this past week I was in New's for lunch with various family members (we still frequently eat there). The service was friendly and accommodating but somewhat haphazard, and the food was mediocre at best. My stepmother and my niece and nephew all had the lunch special of hamburger steak with sides. My great-nephew had a grilled cheese sandwich with fries, and my sister and I both had the philly cheese steak sandwich, hers with fries and mine with breaded mushrooms. No one was especially impressed with their meal. I recommend a visit to New's Restaurant as providing an interesting slice of Meridian history; however I cannot recommend the food as in any way providing a memorable dining experience.

Very quaint and friendly little place off a beaten path. I had the fried livers and they were really good and a large portion.

The ambiance was great. We even had front row views to a Christmas parade!…read more The food was tasty, though not the 'traditional' New Orleans seafood dishes I was expecting. The service was okay. Our waiter was nice, but didn't seem to know the menu or remember what we ordered.

My parents and I stumbled across this place on our way home, and what a find it was. From the…read moremoment we stepped inside, we knew we were somewhere special. The exposed brick and thoughtful décor struck the perfect balance--classic and nostalgic with just the right touch of modern style. We were immediately welcomed by the sweetest hostess (I hate that I can't remember her name--she had glasses, a beautiful smile, and the cutest dress). She greeted us with genuine warmth and hospitality that's hard to come by these days. She led us into the main dining room and seated us at a charming table dressed in crisp white linens. The space featured more exposed brick, tasteful artwork, and just the right amount of décor. The temperature was perfect, and the tables were spaced far enough apart to create an intimate, relaxed atmosphere. Our waiter arrived promptly and was both friendly and knowledgeable. He clearly knew his craft and took the time to walk us through the specials, making sure we felt confident and excited about our choices. We ordered sweet tea, which was perfectly brewed--not overly sweet, just right. The complimentary peanut butter and crackers were something new to us, but after reading about the history behind it, we appreciated the thoughtful touch even more. Our food arrived quickly, and everything was fresh and cooked to order. We tried the spicy chicken sandwich, the cheeseburger, and a special featuring a panini with a cup of gumbo. Each entrée came with perfectly cooked homemade chips. Every bite was spot-on--truly a 10 out of 10. Even though we were full, we couldn't resist ordering dessert--when in Rome, right? We chose the peanut butter pie and the famous Black Bottom pie. After one bite of those generously sized slices, we all paused and just looked at each other. I don't exaggerate when I say we unanimously agreed they were the best pies we've ever had. What started as a plan to sample a few bites and take the rest to go ended with two completely empty plates. We consider ourselves food lovers, and I genuinely couldn't find a single flaw in the entire experience. We live nearly three hours away and are already planning a trip back. If you've made it this far in my amateur review, thank you--and I truly hope you get the chance to experience this wonderful, history-filled gem for yourself.

Solid 3.5 Stars…read more Located in Meridian, this restaurant serves decent sandwiches (cold n hot), soups, chili (no beans) and large potatoes. 4 Stars Service can be spotty, however during our visit, the staff were professional and efficient. We arrived for lunch on a Saturday and they had a steady flow of patrons at the tables and ordering. Though slightly understaff, they watch as a team from taking orders, providing your dreams, preparing the order and servicing it. And they came around to see if you anything else and pick up our empty plates. 3.5 Stars Ambiance is low key and chill. Tables and bathrooms were clean and the music wasn't loud. This establishment continues to honor a 10% military discount. I believe this discount also applies to law-enforcement and first responders. Just make sure you ask for it and you may have to show your ID. Food 3 Stars I ordered the Choose 2. You can choose a sandwich, potato, and a side dish. Such as chips, mac & cheese, chili, or other side dish. Some side dishes cost more. My order was a half of a Max Spud and a cup of chili. The spud comes with cheese, black olives, green onions, and some diced ham on it. The spud was a decent size for a half potato. Can't go wrong with a cup of chili - meat chili. Wifey ordered the New Yorker, which is a Reuben on rye bread and a bag of chips. It was good. Iff you'd like Neil she may want to order an extra one. So if you live in Meridian or close to town, this is a place to go to. If you're driving through on I 20 this is also a good place to make a pitstop. you'll enjoy the food.
