Resurgence of the drive-in movie theater done right! I first learned about Newark Moonlight Cinema about two weeks ago when ABC News did a piece about them. From what saw at the time, it looked like a pretty cool way to spend a Friday or Saturday night so I went to check it out last night - I am soooo glad I did! I had an awesome experience! From the time we pulled up to the time we left, their customer service was on point. They have security guiding you into the lot upon your arrival (the entrance is a bit obscure if you're unfamiliar). Once you enter, they have a paperless check-in process and every employee - let me repeat ABSOLUTELY EVERY EMPLOYEE was wearing a mask! Thank you Newark Moonlight for caring for our health and safety as well as your own! Now the movie...we saw Bad Boys For Life (also known as Bad Boys 3). Since we had an SUV, the staff directed us to the SUV section. Since it was towards the back if the lot, I was a little nervous I wouldn't be able to see - I'm 5'4" and my mom is 5'1" - but, we both sat in the back seats in the car and could still see the movie perfectly! The sound was also really, really good. They had speaker stands at what seemed like every other row and they also broadcasted the audio on FM radio 97.5. We never needed to try the radio so I can't attest to the clarity of the sound - my guess is that the quality was teapot good too. The screen was huge (as a drive-in should be) and picture was clear. I didn't try the concession stand because we brought food with us, but next time I'll prob try their popcorn. After the movie ended and it was time to leave, I thought it was going to be a nightmare getting out because all of the car would bottleneck at the exit - nope! It took us exactly 6mins to get out and that's because we were polite and let a few ppl in our row ahead of us - yep, I timed it! Lol! Overall I will definitely return to check out another movie - if you're on the fence, I can attest to having an awesome experience there and I'm really picky! :-)

I seen this cinema advertised as a new drive in theater in newark. I've missed having movie night and decided that tonight was the night to try a drive in theater. You must buy tickets for each person in the car. Tix are $12 for adults. The concession stand is accessible through an app that notifies you when your order is ready. This cinema is open thursday through sunday. Great place to satisfy your craving for cinema and stay socially distant.

The concessions are vital to a theater's resources and having many options is great. My only concerns have never been addressed by owners or management. The bathrooms in the lower section are tiny, dark and smelly, even at opening hour. The wait lines are long so you miss a lot mid-movie. The upper section has no bathrooms, but rather porta-potties, which aren't cleaned daily and are very dark at night. Another concern is projector brightness. Screen 1 has the brightest and largest screen and even dark themed movies are quite visible even in the rain. It helps that the projector is housed across the snack bar and very close to the screen. Screens 2 and 3 are projected from much farther away and into smaller screens. It seems that the projectors must be upgraded to liquid cooled laser projectors, whose brightness and clarity isn't affected with a proper lens. Instead in a dark themed movie, all one sees is only what is bright and so you're left guessing what's going on in the screen. This totally ruins the experience of going to the movies. There aren't many outdoor movie screens left and having the opportunity to enjoy one is an amazing experience. I truly hope and pray management addresses these issues, so that this establishment can continue to be enjoyed by generations upon generations!

Unlike our last visit, it wasn't the most ideal of weather, but we already purchased the tickets so we still made the drive up. Even on a rainy, chilly night, it was a great experience. Instead of setting up in the bed of our pick up, we just stayed in our car and had a perfectly cozy movie experience. We used our radio for the first flick, but decided to just rent a radio (for $5) for the second so we didn't have to leave the car on. My hot tip is to show up with enough time to get set up and situated. Whether that means lawn chairs and blankets, or setting up in the trunk of your hatchback, getting cozy is your #1 priority here people! A few updates from last year: -They take card now! It made renting the radio and ordering food very easy. -The app is no longer needed. You can go right up to the window to order, but leave time before the movie starts because it takes a while. This is a perfect night for any season and I can't wait to go back.

I signed up right away to the drive-in site for future events notification. We are familiar in the area so getting to the drive-in is not a hassle at all. There are friendly staff members who guided the movie goers for effective parking and pleasurable viewing. The movie theater location is in the New York Hall of Science parking lot and the screen is fronting a good view of Terrace on the Park. The adaptable comfort zone is clean, convenient and follows Covid protocol. Luckily, we received a complimentary snack box courtesy of Apple TV+. The film is a free event too. Let's support the cause of this drive -in theater. It gives pleasure two ways.

To have one right in our borough, in our very crowded city, is such a treat. And it was all free. The second time we went we even got free treats left on our windshield. The staff was amazing. They led us through the maze of metal barricades and cones to the viewing area, made sure we were parked appropriately on the lawn, good enough to view the screen perfectly straight on, and helped us to turn all of our lights off. When we weren't able to tune them all off while still listening to the movie audio on our radio, they came around and lent us a portable radio. That way we could turn the car completely off and listen to the movie audio from their borrowed radio. There was also a food stand, but we had dinner beforehand and brought our own snacks, so we didn't order from them. All in all, a pretty awesome experience for the whole family. Thanks to all the staff and organizations that made it possible!

In addition to presenting indie films, foreign films, or thought-provoking documentaries that you won't usually find at corporate-owned theaters, the Clairidge's theater auditoriums are smaller and more intimate than you'd find in the big, corporate-owned theaters and only one of the six auditoriums have the fully-reclining seats that have become the industry standard. On the other hand, the concessions go way above and beyond the classic movie theater snacks like popcorn, candy, and sodas which enhances the unique viewing experience. The Clairidge's concessions stand offers beer, wine, and canned cocktails - including the "Director's Cut Blood Orange IPA" created by New Jersey Beer Co. exclusively for Montclair Film. There's nothing better than catching a movie with a drink in hand. It's the perfect blend of a high-brow film experience and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere that makes for a sophisticated night out while supporting a non-profit that gives so much back to the Montclair community. PRO TIP #1: Show up early to get a good seat. The Clairidge doesn't offer reserved seating and its smaller auditoriums fill up quickly. PRO TIP #2: Download the ParkMobile app. You can pay for parking in Montclair via the ParkMobile app whether you park in the town's garages or metered on-street parking. If you can't find a spot on the street, parking in the Montclair Parking Utility's Crescent Deck (located at 13 The Crescent), which is located just a block from the back entrance of The Clairidge, is $2/hour.

Now that Spring has spring, and we have this up and down weather, I took a chance last minute on Friday night about 3:25 PM. Scored a premium ticket for 5pm movie. The showtimes seem to be more typical of after 7 PM. most of the movies that they're showing are around like 930 and unfortunately that's a timeframe that just doesn't fit for me. but the movies that they're showing are pretty decent I'm probably gonna try to check out again if they have a 7 o'clock show for a really good movie. So for $36 I got the premium chair, small popcorn that it comes with and they give you headphones to listen to the movie on. interestingly enough people sitting to the left of me in a cheaper chair and people sitting behind me somehow were carrying on conversations throughout the movie. I didn't think that was great etiquette but OK. the weather was sunny, but there definitely was a cool breeze that hit every once in a while. I would imagine as the sun went down it gets colder. they do offer blankets for sale and they looked super cozy, but I don't know how much they cost.
