Drove from Bayonne to this theater to see "Gimme Shelter". This was the only theater showing this movie within a 50 mile radius. I realized after watching the movie that a lot of the movie was filmed in the area of Newark, the Oranges and Essex County in general. So it would make sense that if anyone was showing the movie it would be City Plex 12 Newark. They have their own private parking lot and one can tell that the structure is fairly new. The inside of the main lobby is pretty spacious with super high ceilings. They have an arcade room with a few machines for one's entertainment while waiting. Again, everything in this place is brand new and fresh. The seats in our specific theater were comfortable. Floors were clean. The employees we dealt with were OK. We did not try any of the concession offerings but it looked pretty standard: popcorn, nachos, hot dogs, candy. There is an Applebee's accross the street as well for a quick bite or drinks befpre or after I wouldn't go out of my way from Bayonne to come here if a movie is being offered closer but I would not have a problem returning for an exclusive movie.

I want to say I'm doing I recently visited this AMC location and overall had a mixed experience. First, I want to highlight the staff. Everyone I interacted with was friendly, helpful, and attentive. They were professional and genuinely seemed to enjoy what they were doing, which made a great first impression. The theater itself has a cool vibe, and the seats are very comfortable. However, the reclining felt slightly off and not fully proportional when leaning back. Another thing that stood out was the food tray setup. When the seat was reclined, the tray felt awkwardly positioned and not very accessible. Once the lights went off, the theater became extremely dark, to the point where you could not see your food at all. Many people had to use their phone flashlights just to find their snacks. The biggest disappointment for me was the food options. If I had known in advance, I likely would have chosen a different AMC location. The menu felt more like an Applebee's-style dine-in setup rather than a traditional movie theater concession stand. Many classic AMC staples were not available. For example, they did not have regular nachos, only loaded nachos. When I asked if I could just get plain nachos, I was told I would have to order the loaded version and remove the toppings myself, for the same price. That was frustrating. I also tried the buffalo wings and fries, and unfortunately they tasted low quality and underwhelming. Lastly, the entrance to the theater was confusing. It took me about five extra minutes just to figure out where to go. The staff and seating comfort were definite positives, but the food options and layout could use improvement.

In addition to presenting indie films, foreign films, or thought-provoking documentaries that you won't usually find at corporate-owned theaters, the Clairidge's theater auditoriums are smaller and more intimate than you'd find in the big, corporate-owned theaters and only one of the six auditoriums have the fully-reclining seats that have become the industry standard. On the other hand, the concessions go way above and beyond the classic movie theater snacks like popcorn, candy, and sodas which enhances the unique viewing experience. The Clairidge's concessions stand offers beer, wine, and canned cocktails - including the "Director's Cut Blood Orange IPA" created by New Jersey Beer Co. exclusively for Montclair Film. There's nothing better than catching a movie with a drink in hand. It's the perfect blend of a high-brow film experience and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere that makes for a sophisticated night out while supporting a non-profit that gives so much back to the Montclair community. PRO TIP #1: Show up early to get a good seat. The Clairidge doesn't offer reserved seating and its smaller auditoriums fill up quickly. PRO TIP #2: Download the ParkMobile app. You can pay for parking in Montclair via the ParkMobile app whether you park in the town's garages or metered on-street parking. If you can't find a spot on the street, parking in the Montclair Parking Utility's Crescent Deck (located at 13 The Crescent), which is located just a block from the back entrance of The Clairidge, is $2/hour.

The theater itself feels very dated, but the real issue was the seating. The chairs were old--like, visibly worn--and my wife's chair was actually broken. On top of that, nearly every chair in the theater squeaked. I'm not exaggerating when I say that at one point it sounded like we were sitting on a playground instead of watching a movie. The concession line was another mess. It was so long that people were still filing into the theater 30 minutes after the movie started. I honestly wish I had taken a picture because it was unbelievable. To top it off, my wife's seat was right next to a railing, which completely obstructed her view. We had to ask for a booster seat just so she could see the screen. That seat absolutely should have been labeled as obstructed view. Between the broken seating, constant noise, insane concession lines, and poor seating layout, this was a really disappointing experience--especially for a big event on NYE. There are much better AMC theaters in the area, and we'll be sticking to those moving forward.

We also weren't told ahead of time that you have to pick up your food and drinks yourself, which was surprising since we're used to full service at your seat. On the positive side, the popcorn and truffle fries were decent, but everything else fell short. The seats were just okay--not particularly comfortable. The bathroom situation was also frustrating--it's located upstairs near the restaurant and wasn't well maintained. There were no paper towels, and overall cleanliness was lacking. The theaters are currently swarmed now with Wicked drones (the proletariat indoctrinated with marketing brainwashing) - even saw a pair dressed like the two lead simps. Witches buy popcorn. When I entered my non-Bewitched theater early, I joked to another of the few patrons there in the empty Nuremberg theater "why didn't you come dressed as Görring?" This went over better than my joke to the concession drones, asking if they're seeing a lot of brawls in the Wicked-screenings. Blank dumbfounded stares. Doesn't anyone remember laughter? So: two minor complaints at this evening's prematurely ended evening for my "free" ish flick: 1) A bossy short Dad and his son came and I was sitting in one of their seats - it was early. I cheerily explained I didn't wanted to crowd the person next to me but now I'd move. No big deal. That was until short stuff sternly ordered me to get up. "Get up!" 30 minutes before the film in a half empty theater as I was being unjustifiable polite. I said something lighthearted in response to the Sultan's Command and there were no problems - until after the homunculus sat down and then proceeded to pull up his furry bare stinky feet yogi style into his lap to do what any decent civilized man would do at any movie theater in front of his child and strangers: he began to pick his filthy feet. 2) After I got that bestial grooming tactic out of my mind after twenty minutes of ignoring it in my peripheral vision, then on the other side of me I heard the familiar "sppporitzzzclick" of a Good Ole Boy crackin' up a cold one. This is doubtless illegal - at first I ignored it but after his second beer gassed up the area to a dive bar level stench miasma, I left the theater early. I wondered as I escaped the Hollywood whitewash flick (I was buying Russell Cow's twinkling eyes), whether Mountainside staff would have done a thing if I had reported the primitivist or the drunks. It's why I typically only attend movies that are sparsely populated by the Great Unwashed. Jean Paul Satre said it about - that quote about what other people are.
