Metrograph is the theater for movie lovers. The showings here are curated with care; often times they'll have a theme, other times it's movies that celebrate a certain event. This place is a treasure. Tickets are so reasonably priced if you get the membership. Everyone who works here is nice. The popcorn is delicious and the convenience store treats are so fun. Oh! Also! The movies! They have such great selections and series. There are old favorites and fun surprises. I have only seen one pick here where I left wondering why they picked it. Everything else has either been a rare chance to see a classic on screen or a wonderful surprise. There are also great talks and events. I have never done the commissary but one day I will. I bet the food is good. Everything at Metrograph is good. I wish they had more/cooler merch. I would rep Metrograph. read more

This place is so cool - old timey feel with showing great classics! My first experience here and it was great. The screen was big enough and chairs were also nice for the place. I watched a late night movie so the light snack of popcorn and peach gummy were really good. They also had various snacks you wouldn't typically find in other movie theaters. Some folks call it a film, I call it a movie, mmm-hmm. Movies shouldn't be viewed on a phone. They shouldn't be paused every 12 minutes. Movies are not TV. They can be "product" or "content" but hopefully not only. Metrograph thankfully doesn't fall into the highbrow/lowbrow traps that afflict some of our cultural gatekeepers. You might find a 147-minute meditation on how fading oak tree leaves in Vermont symbolize mortality and climate change playing in one theater, Road House in the next. The industry is forever changed and we won't reverse the decline of theaters showing unique first-run movies instead of Batman Meets Superman Meets Marvel Meets Fast Furious F4Eva, but at least Metrograph has preserved film history. And I appreciate an audience that only talks and texts far less than average, but also has reactions that enhance the mood, whether it's the watch monologue Pulp Fiction or the art teacher in Ghost World opining about found objects. The mumblecore series brought Andrew Bukalski and the Mutual Appreciation gang in for a Q&A and will be granting the proper big-screen treatment for The Puffy Chair. Sadly, even though I follow Metrograph on Twitter I somehow missed their screening of the long-disappeared Spike of Bensonhurst. Hopefully that wasn't a Halley's Comet situation. read more

Seating is kind of uncomfortable and a bit cramped in my opinion, so if you're a taller person I wouldn't recommend it. Bathroom was clean and they had a little waiting area. Didn't buy anything from the concessions. Honestly would've rather gone to an amc and it would've costed about the same price too but I guess it's good if you want to see an old movie. read more

Metrograph is a cool place. I received a membership here for Christmas in hopes I would see all kinds of movies. There's a small bar downstairs, bookstore and restaurant up stairs. Small concessions in the lobby and I think two theaters total. Concessions include freshly popped popcorn which was quite good for $5.00, standard drinks and candy. The membership discount does not apply to concessions but will apply to drinks at the bar at least and the restaurant I believe. I was in Theater 1 to see Downtown 81. The seats are not very comfortable, as I am used to the recliners at Alamo. Nonetheless, my back didn't feel sore after coming here so I guess they're alright. I picked up my ticket at the box office but no one checked my ticket to enter the theater which was odd. I don't like that they let people in once the movie has started which is extremely disruptive. People were still coming in 10-20 minutes into the movie and having to walk in front of people to get to their seats - notice how the late people are always the ones who choose the seats in the middle of the fucking theater? Lol, how hard is it to show up on time to a movie? Overall, I'll come back as I have the membership and look forward to seeing some things I have not seen before. I just wish they enforced some rules that would limit the disruptions to the movie once it has already started. read more

Had my first visit to The Metrograph thanks to a special screening of an independent film I purchased tickets for. Cool movie and even cooler that they had a Q&A with the director afterwards. Even the star of the film showed up! The two story building has a bar/lounge ooon the first floor and a small concession area with popcorn and snacks for sale. There is also a restroom behind the lounge. Take the staircase up to the second level and there is a restaurant and bar that serves food throughout the day. Offers a lunch and dinner menu. There is also a small area of books for sale. Just at the top of the staircase is the door to the balcony level seating of the theater. With just 2-3 rows of seat at the top and the lower level seating, the theater doesn't hold many. I'd guess under 150-200? Seats are old, but they have cup holders and the theater seemed relatively clean. Overall, a cool spot nestled between graffiti stricken walls just as you walk out. Adds to the 'artsy' vibe. read more

I love the Metrograph, because I love movies. I post to say I do not go often enough. And I want to nudge myself. This is a criticism of my attitude, not anybody else's: I will be sad if establishments such as this disappear. That means I have to patronize the business to ensure it thrives. The problem is movies have become too easy to watch at home, with the comforts and the conveniences, the familiarity, avoiding crazy crowds, and on screens with sound systems that rival the conventional multiplex. Folks at the Metrograph appreciate all that. They are doing what has to be done. They are enhancing the experience of the night out. You can tell the management here is not simply trying to make a buck (nothing wrong with that). They care about the medium and the art. They are giving me (you and me) something beyond a ticket and a seat and popcorn; they're trying to provide a feeling you endured the hurly burly of the public square for a good reason. The popcorn is sold in tiny boxes that a 2 year old could eat. Who thinks this is a good idea? To get an ample serving you'd have to buy about 5 of them. It's overpriced, too small and not hot. For a first rate place like this, the popcorn situation is among the worst of any movie theater in the entire city. read more

The snack selection is mostly Chinese snacks/candy; however, most of them come in plastic wrappers, which makes it hard to be quiet during the movie. This spot was definitely a great place based on a previous visit some time ago. It is a great trendy hipster movie theater and that seems to be the new trend. Honestly, I loved the layout of this place, lobby looked cool, had some trendy concessions items as well. Truly unique movie theater in the heart of downtown with plush seating and varied programming. You can become a member for a small monthly fee and access films at home as well. Well known guests sometimes curate film offerings or speak in person before or after a screening. There is a high end restaurant and small book store on site. In the lobby, gourmet and classic treats are sold. This is a great alternative to movie chains where people are on their phones or talking during a movie. Here, the audience is made up of true film lovers who are respectful and quiet. Chinatown and the East Village are nearby to get a meal before or after. Try a month and see if it's for you. read more

I can say I have been to my share of movie theaters in NYC. This one is top notch. I love how comfortable the seats are. The bathroom is very clean. It has this modern and chic look to it. The night that I went, this theater hosted the premiere of Pretty Little Liars - The Perfectionists. They gave out free drinks, popcorns and T-shirts. The best part was seeing the two main cast members in person. I will definitely come here again. read more

They show some great films, and having a restaurant bar upstairs is nice, but they need a complete overhaul and new management. Please, some rich film lover, buy this enterprise and make it good. It's a total scam as they currently run it. Sign up for a year membership and you bet your arse you'll be paying for every year to come- leave them a message begging to cancel and you bet your arrrrse they won't call back and they won't cancel it. They must be very financially in the hole if they're resorting to swindling crap like that. And all the people who work there are forced to wear some uniform designed by the maniac who runs it or something like that. Go see a great film, and pray someone good buys the place. No refunds for a ticket for a showing bought by mistake as their website didn't update the order. Given this weird policy that penalizes customers for their technically bad website, I told them I wouldn't be going to the Metrograph again, that I would discourage people from seeing films there and would write a fair review about the experience. One of their staff, perhaps a middle schooler with no customer training, wrote a passive aggressive response. However, on reading the rest of the bad reviews, this appears to be a pattern, suggesting deeper issues with their company culture. read more

I love this classy gem of a place. Very special art house movie theater with nice snacks, a full bar, bookstore and restaurant! What more could you want. Films are well curated. I thought this place was going to be pretentious but then I went and somehow it's not. Everyone who works there is so nice. I love that this seems to be a place that filmmakers and film lovers seem to equally love. I've seen so many great filmmakers do q/a's here. Seats aren't the most comfortable but honestly I'll sacrifice that for everything else this theater offers. I had such a blast at their Oscars screening. I love this place. read more

I love the movies and going to the movies is an absolute treat for me! When I heard Metrograph was doing a full Terry Zwigoff marathon and that the director himself would be there, it was a must! I am a huge fan of Ghost World and I've never seen it in the big screen. And thanks to Meteograph, that was about to change. And my heart completely melted into a puddle under my seat when I knew I would be hearing the Q&A with Zwigoff and another fave of mine, Steve Buscemi!! They told the most hilarious ScarJo stories and also visits to Playboy Mansion sans ScarJo but showing Crumb. Heffner was a bit of a comic book artist. My friend and I ordered tickets online, weeks in advance!! She was even able to get a seat right next to me. I kinda liked the assigned seating so I didn't have to leave work early to claim a spot. The early show was completely sold out. I came close to the wire. There are concessions which I will check out next time but this time I didn't want to miss a minute. This is not a table service type theater. I now follow this theater in Instagram and Facebook and their film selections are spot on. They know they stuff!! I look forward to spending some uber hot summer evenings or crisp winter Sunday afternoon at this spot! read more

WOW! I wouldn't have even learned about this place had it not been for a student of mine whose partner programs it: that is, selects the slate of socially important films and organizes them into thematic series. He hooked me up with tickets to a screening of Princess Mononoke, produced by the infamous Studio Ghibli Japanese animination studio. It was part of a program on climate change, which sadly was disrupted by the horrific events of this past year. (Mononoke is the protaganist and the movie is an indictment of patriarchy and human-accelerated ecological degradation. It is surprisingly prescient for its time, too, with non-stigmatizing depictions of those whom our society marginalizes heavily, like sex workers.) Metrograph is a great venue that NYC really needs, and I hope they can hang in there until we get out of this catastrophe. It turns moviegoing into a social experience by padding the collective movie watching with helpful prefatory remarks (ours was by Naomi Klein), and my understanding is some screenings are accompanied by things like panels. Second, it helps people become aware of movies that might've been off their radar in the age of the cineplex and HBO Max. Third, unlike places like Film Forum, Metrograph does not think it's some bizarre point of pride to have 1970s ratty broken seats and poor sightlines. It's a really nice, quality screen with top-flight projection. Hoping to visit you soon, Metrograph! read more

Beautifully styled cinema showing indie and foreign movies down in Lower East side. Tickets are slightly cheaper than mainstream cinemas. They have a bar upstairs which seems lively on the weekends. Staff are friendly. The interior of the screening areas is small, but luxurious, with a limited number of seats, perhaps 20, for each theatre. They also show older movies here. This is now probably my favorite movie theatre in New York. read more

**At the time of this review, the theater is still incomplete.** The invention of smartphones outdated brick cell phones decades ago. In a similar way, Metrograph quietly opened last month at Lunar New Year with an ambition of innovating the normal functionalities of a movie theater. There will soon be a complex bar and restaurant space inside this arthouse theater. I pay a visit to the half-done theater and witness its potential in the business. Wooden chairs in red velvet have a nice old-school vibe. Leg room at each seat is a first class experience. For now, it is these seats that cover all inconveniences of the one-month-old indie theater. Here are some highlights: - LOCATION: The theater is between a funeral services building and a fish market. Really?! I didn't expect a former food storage warehouse to become Manhattan's new arthouse. Looks don't matter, but in an area where every building has the same brick color, the possibility of missing the spot is high. And even at an unflattering location, a ticket in the afternoon on a weekday is $12. Needless to say, prices in the evening are surely higher. Metrograph has 2 screens: a small 46-seat and another 166-seat theater. One big perk is that you can choose your own seat at the cashier. The bigger theater has a balcony with 2 rows of chairs, very similar to the Paris Theater, but new chairs at Metrograph are much more comfortable. - AIM FOR THE BALCONY: The view from the balcony is fantastically the best for your cinematic experience. But the stairway to my scenic balcony is quite laborious. Seating starts exactly 5 minutes before show time, but I cannot sit in the lounge yet because it is not finished (only at the time of the review). Then before entering the balcony, a ticket staff has to point a flashlight to the entrance door for me because the room is too dark. I excuse Metrograph for being a newly born baby in the theater industry. Anyhow from any seat, anyone should be able to enjoy a very wide view of the screen. - CONCESSIONS: Futuristic concession boxes are backlit at the center of the lobby. Motley candy and snack packages are organized in white office drawers. Japanese snack fans may recognize overpriced Pocky and gummy candy. The concessions here are beyond classic popcorn and soda - olive oil/turmeric popcorn and craft bottled sodas. No movie popcorn smell, but organic boutique-esque, eh? Cheers to concessions with a side of healthcare and natural farming. -STAFF: A shout-out to the staff. People here are young and very friendly. They keep apologizing for the annoying aspects of an incomplete theater. So, what's next to expect? A small film bookstore, a restaurant, and 2 full bars are being added to Metrograph. New wooden bars, new tables, and new sofas are already set out upstairs. I am told that the whole project is expected to be complete in a few weeks. Metrograph also joins the film club of 35mm prints. Before entering the balcony, you can see through 2 projection rooms. Even in a digital era, someone's got to show movies in their original format, and Metrograph pledges to do so since the opening day. This place is a gem. At first the menu is a little limited, but all choices are great. We had the tuna tartare and it was truly one of the best I've ever had. The combination of flavors was truly impressive. We also tried the chicken (!!) and the duck (nice and crispy!). Don't leave without trying the desserts. not good only bc $50 for 2 espresso martinis should be criminal. this place has a weird energy, its so film bro. they show good movies but also so does everywhere else. but seriously $50 for 2 drinks is insane, and they were good and the one star is for the service, staff was and always is on point, bartender and host and ticket office were all excellent, but its the the management that feels like a problem. also its realllllly hard to forget how the owner treated his staff during covid, puts a terrible taste in the mouth. read more

Upsides: Really nice place, well put-together, and with the bookstore, and the bar, etc., very impressive; membership plan not bad. Downsides: Pricier than other places; and programming is decent, not great -- they don't take a lot of chances. But the deal-breaker is this: there is no way of contacting them if you have a question. None. No email address, no phone number, no reply form on the site. This bespeaks a snotty disdain for their customers that is just a massive turn-off. So unless there's something rare and irresistable (this does not happen there often), I avoid the Metrograph. Too bad, it's a great project and I'd really like to support them... I'd love to be able to go when it's 'nothing up tonight, let's just go catch something'. But no, not when that's their attitude toward their clientele. Maybe I'm just not 'cool' enough. read more

I would have considered becoming a member for discounts on future tickets, but the seats are SO uncomfortable that I can't imagine going back. I've dealt with awkward theater seats before (often at BAM) but these were so bad that I considered leaving and finishing the movie (sorry, "film") at home. read more

Shame on Metrograph for their lack of courtesy, unfriendliness and snobbery. On 6/21 we went to see Hockney's documentary and Q&A with Hazan. I had bought a ticket in advance, but my friend didn't have one, as they appeared as "sold out" in the web site. Yet he decided to take a chance and come (from far, mind you), in case some seats would become available for whatever reason. At 7 pm, when the film was about to start, I noticed however that the movie theater was far from full capacity (about 20 % of the seats were available (?)). Hence we asked if my friend could get a ticket and be allowed in. They refused, stating that the empty seats would be filled out later and they don't take "waiting lists" (nobody else was waiting). In any case, the film finished showing (at which time many people left) , the Q&A took place and the empty seats were still, well, empty. It is brow-raising that the theater was far from full, yet appeared as "sold out". Second, they should honor people's interest and efforts in watching rare films and traveling to their site, and do their best to give access rather than decline it without a fair reason. There was nothing intimate or friendly about they way management proceeded in this case. This incident brings into question their care for their viewership. I will stick to the other film clubs in the city which actually do their best to accommodate their fans, rather than supporting this one. read more

This theater is a hidden gem in the Lower East Side - there's no sign outside...I wandered around a couple blocks before looking inside and realizing this was the spot I was looking for. It's a very small and cozy venue - there is a small snack shop with house-made popcorn and candy, and an upstairs dining area. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. The inside of the theater looks like one of those from back in the day. The seats are comfy but don't recline, and the decor creates the environment that this theater is a staple of the neighborhood. I definitely did not know this place existed until I went to a movie screening of everything everwhere all at once. It was such in a nondescript place in Chinatown but the inside was so chic. I ate food prior but they do have a restaurant/bar inside. The snack assortment was amazing, almost had every sort of Asian snack you could think of. The non alcoholic drink selection was also great, I wanted to try all the unique soda flavors. It was such a trendy movie theatre, perfect for a date spot. The theatre itself was ok and the seating wasn't the most comfortable. The seats didn't recline and it was more like felt covered wooden seats. However, I enjoyed the movie screening especially with the wide assortment of snacks and drinks. read more

A hidden gem in LES!! Amazing amazing movie selection--mostly independent or very classic ones and only in 35mm film. Highly recommend purchasing the tickets online before your visit (can choose seats in advance too). 4/5 stars because I recently sat in a "handicap seat" which was just an added wooden chair with ripped cushion thrown into the theater (with no number on chair so it also made it awkward to ask the person that was already sitting in it to move !!!) I did wanna see the movie, but honestly if your gonna add makeshift seats that could be salvaged from the streets of Chinatown, make them discounted seats. Come on, and also charging $4-5 for a pack of pocky... in Chinatown? Questionable... lastly - If a I buy a $12 glass bottle of Beer, I should be able to bring it into the theater to enjoy. Please change your policies to cater to a better and fun loving atmosphere for your film aficionados and customers Besides these hiccups in service, i love this place and the films they show are wonderful read more

This is definitely my fave movie theatre in the city. We recently came here for a Friday the 13th showing of Pet Semetary and it did not disappoint. I know the word awesome is probably over used and should be reserved for miracles and such but in today's parlance I really do think this place is awesome. It has a thoughtful selection of films that aren't so artistic that a commoner like me can't appreciate or understand but enough specialization to distinguish it from other theaters of its kind. The seats are comfortable enough the screen is a good viewing distance I recommend the back so you don't have to crane your neck. But I was very comfortable for a 123 min feature. The snacks like most theaters are expensive but also well thought out. Would definitely go back and recommend this place to all my friends. Almost didn't want to write such a glowing review of it to keep it a hidden gem but wanted make sure it got the recognition it deserves. read more

By far the worst art house theater I've been to in the city. I had tickets to a 9:30 movie that started late because the theater had scheduled a sold out screening right before that started late so it screwed up my commute home. Not to mention the customer service sucks; a rude man at the front demanded what I was there for as soon as I entered the lobby and the staff were non-communicative as to why the movie was starting late (there was a crowd of us in the lobby waiting to go in with no word as to what was going on). And the seats are uncomfortable as hell. This place may be a spot for hipsters but as an art house theater, this place sucks. Go to IFC, Film Forum, or East Village Angelika instead. read more
