I've been to this theater twice, and if I can say anything, it's scrappy. It has moxie. You can call her ugly, but you can't keep her down. Previously I went to see Titanique. This time I went to see 44, the Obama musical. Much of my previous review holds true. The bar is downstairs. The drinks are watery and gimmicky, but they get the job done. There isn't a bad seat in the house, the acoustics are good, though as I said before, if you sit too close to the stage, you might cheat yourself out of views. And just like before, the seats are cramped, uncomfortable, and covered in stains and hair. But I enjoyed the show and the "ick" factor wouldn't keep me from seeing shows here over and over. read more

The representation of Mitch, Lindsey, Sarah, Hillary is down right epic. Tickets are pricey but worth every penny. Don't let Trump find out, he might want to put his name on it. This is the review of the current production of Dilaria, playing at the DR2 theater. My not-so-boring Friday was spent at the DR2 theater in Union Square. The current production at the theater is Dilaria, starring Ella Stiller, Tessa Albertsons and Chris Briney ( Conrad Fisher from TSITP ). It is playing a limited engagement run until 8/8, with tickets available on TodayTix. I got 2 tickets for free through an Instagram giveaway and was seated in the 4th row. The view was impeccable and the actors were so funny. Dilaria examines the repercussions of untreated mental illness and toxic relationships through the lens of our three characters. There were certainly lots of twists and turns in this 90 minute long production. read more

This was my first time attending the Daryl Roth Theater and it was an enjoyable experience. The theater is small, quaint, clean, and the staff members are very cordial and helpful. We went to see, All The Devils Are Here, and it was amazing! It's a one person show and Patrick Page, nominated for Hadestown, put on a fabulous performance. He not only wrote the play, but also portrays many of Shakespeare's villains, revealing nature's complexity. Mr. Page is gripping, humorous, and insightful masterclass on the essence of human nature. After the play, Mr. Page came out for a 20 minute talk-back. He answered the audience's questions with great detail and personal insight. Decent off Broadway theatre, but could be better. The downstairs bar area is okay, but the bathrooms really need better maintenance. The theatre itself is mediocre - basically a black box with 100 or so organized office chairs. It's small, so every seat in the house is good! Titanique is a solid show! I came here to see Titanique this week, and had the best time! The theater is small and intimate, so there is not a bad seat in the house! Downstairs they have a bar, merch section, step and repeat for photos, and bathrooms. Colleen was the bartender the night we went and she made us some awesome vodka sodas! All the staff was helpful and directed us to our seats. We were in the front row, which was awesome, and the show was HILARIOUS! If you love titanic, celine dion, and/or musical theater jokes, you have to see the show! The talent is off the charts and I didn't stop laughing the whole 90 minutes. It is so funny, silly, with a ton of pop culture references as well as amazing references to the iconic Titanic movie). Thanks to strong word of mouth, such as from our friend Mia, and a passionate social media following, this musical is a loving parody of the epic movie Titanic. Titanique, in French, retells the story from Céline Dion's perspective and through her eyes and music. Experiencing off-Broadway week as first-timers, my partner and I came to the Daryl Roth Theatre located on 15th Street in Union Square. Upon entering, the interior is perfectly sized and intimate, with great views of the stage, and the acoustics are good. There were steps up to the theater and down two levels to the bar and restrooms. We were in orchestra row L, and our seats were manageable. Nicole Parker, who played Céline, was on Mad TV, and Elphaba in Wicked was so hilarious. The vocal talent of the cast was simply amazing, especially Anne Fraser Thomas, who played Molly. It's quite witty, entertaining, and amusing, and we had a blast! If you're a fan of either Céline or Titanic--or both--there's nothing to stop you from having a great night out at Titanique, which we can recommend. read more

I visited Daryl Roth Theatre on a Saturday night at 8 pm for the "Is There Still Sex in the City" play by Candace Bushnell. She is the writer of the hit Sex and the City. In the show, she tells her personal stories of love, relationships, and the relationship rules that she learned from her life. It was a spacious venue with a comedic show and I enjoyed it. A wonderful off Broadway theatre right off of Union Square Easily accessible by subway (4,5,6) and many restaurants around the area as well. We went to see "Is there still sex in the city?" and we really enjoyed it. We showed our vaccination cards and our IDs to get in. You can see the stage from anywhere in the theatre so that doesn't matter because it is a 100 person theatre. read more

Came here for Hyprov and it was a really cool experience involving Hypnosis and Improv. Volunteers from the audience will be weened down to 3-5 participants who would be part of the improv performance. It was hilarious to see how normal day people get influenced by hypnosis and let loose to provide a fun night of entertainment. read more

I saw "Gloria A Life" the other day and had a great experience. The show was fabulous! The use of original video projections, strong ensemble cast, and theatre in the round was a great combination to tell this powerful story. The performance I saw was being filmed for television broadcast so there were a few cameras in the audience. I appreciated the story circle after the show, lead by Gloria Steinem herself. I'm grateful for the strong artistic team of women including playwright Emily Mann, and director Diane Paulus behind the production. An important time in history every person should know about. It was delivered in a conversational, active and imaginative way. Go see it! The theatre seating, lighting and atmosphere was very pleasant. There are stairs and an elevator that go down to the lower level where there is a bar, lobby, and restrooms. Ticketing was easy and professional. read more

The Daryl Roth Theatre is a great spot for catching Off-Broadway productions in a large-scale theater. It is located right off Union Square Park in a renovated 1840s bank, the former Union Square Savings Bank. There are 3 distinct spaces in the building at present time, the Daryl Roth Theatre: currently home to In & Of Itself, the DR2 Theatre: an intimate performance space, and the downstairs cabaret bar: The D-Lounge. We went to see "In & Of Itself". It is about the illusion of identity and is a one man show from creator Derek DelGaudio, Executive Producer Neil Patrick Harris and Directed by Frank Oz. The show was fantastic and kept you thinking, imagining and left you in amazement and wonderment of what just happened. Over the course of the shows twists and turns woven by a well crafted tale told by Derek interwoven with his magic, you ponder the identity of self and the mystery that is Derek's magic. I highly recommend catching this show if your looking for something different then the usual song and dance shows On-Broadway. Small theater approximately 100 seats they are roomy not to worry about being squeezed in. Every seat has a view, I wouldn't want to sit in the first 3 to 4 rows, VERY close to stage. The show we saw used minimal props, but with great skill. Consession stand has a few snacks, beer, wine, and water which you are allowed to take into the theater. I would go more often, but living an hour away it would have to be a pretty good show for off Broadway. It's located very near Union Square park, and some very good restaurants so make a day of it if you're coming in from out of town. read more

They have a sketchy looking coat check when I went, so I ended up holding my big bag during the show :( When you go, specifically to see Fuerza, bring a small bag you don't mind carrying and a ziploc bag for your phone and anything else that cannot afford water damage ;) They also serve drinks at a petite bar and have long lines for the bathroom. read more

This is a great theater/performance space. The location is so accessible. The building was once the Union Square Savings Bank with its imposing front columns facing the east side of the park. Apparently when Frank Oz took the reins he finagled it so that audiences would be able to enter through that attractive facade. We entered through the side doors, however, and around a short bend into the main theater. According to the website, the main theater seats 300 people, not counting standing room. I wouldn't have clocked the seating at more than 165 people, though, so I don't know if it was reconfigured for this show or not. The smaller venue -- the DR2 -- seats 99. I popped by the bathroom downstairs first, which isn't huge (men's has two urinals and two stalls, I believe). But it was nicely designed and fairly well maintained. There's also a bar, but I didn't drop by. The performance I caught made for an immensely enjoyable evening. The staff is top tier and, by and large, the audience was capable of respecting the social contract in densely shared space (which unfortunately in a city brimming with "vibrant diversity" is something you can rarely take for granted anymore #sorrynotsorry). All of the above makes Daryl Roth a five star venue. The sole variable dragging down its rating is the absolutely terrible seating. While I completely support (humanely practiced) capitalistic enterprise, and understand the desire for any given venue to maximize patronage, the way in which this theater skimps on seating is inexcusable in my eyes. The chairs are generic, stackable dining hall chairs that will seat the average small-boned Japanese woman quite comfortably. There are no armrests. God forbid you visit a show in cold weather and people's bulky outerwear makes for a tight fit even when all the patrons are New York thin. But try throwing two or three overweight people into a row (this is a touristy city in America, so that's a given) and the fact that the small chairs are zip-tied to one another at the legs -- and therefore have zero space between them -- makes for an almost unbearably tight situation. I got lucky because I was flanked by a diminutive woman on one side and my lanky young nephew on the other. Yet with the relative breadth of my shoulders, I STILL had to throw an arm over the back of my nephew's chair through most of the performance, so that I could lean slightly and not impinge on the space of the woman next to me. It's pretty ridiculous, and because one's ability to remain moderately comfortable for an extended period of time is paramount in order to enjoy a show, I doubt I'll be returning unless I can secure a seat off the aisle and I get to choose my seat mate by size. It's such a shame because in every other facet, this space is really wonderful. Honestly, I think it's shitty that the proprietors place profit over BASIC audience comfort to such an extent. This being my first visit, they fooled me once. But going forward I've no choice but to vote with my dollar. Final word to the wise: unless you have major vision issues or an endless stream of disposable income (in which case, hit me up!) it's not super necessary to splurge on the more expensive seats in the front few rows. The space is not very large and seating is tiered on a nice enough gradient that I had minimal issues enjoying the full scope of the wonderful show I caught, despite having a tall man right in front of me. read more

We saw a play there two nights ago - "The Good and the True". It's a true story of Czech male & female survivors of Auschwitz, based on their verbal recollections - and there's an extraordinary connection, in that the actress is the (real-life) granddaughter of one of the two characters. Both actors gave *wonderful* performances and it's a very emotional & thought-provoking play. Also, the woman handing out programs - and the man taking tickets, who later made the pre-show announcement - were very friendly. The show will continue through September 14. read more

I've been to the DR2 a few times for local theater productions over the years. It's a small community theater, very convenient to all transportation in Union Square. Space is comfortable, although maybe good to note that there is an aisle on only one side - seating charts make it look like there are two aisles, but one side is just a wall. I haven't been 100% in love with the shows I've seen here ("Reading Under the Influence" was the latest one) but the actors always made a good fist of it, and the productions seemed well designed and rehearsed. Recent ticket prices were only $8, which to me is ridiculous, you can't even see a movie or have a cocktail for that price. I don't know how they do it, but long live the DR2! read more

Loved this theatre! It was the perfect setup for their current running show - Fuerza Bruta! It was absolutely brilliant and I reccomend anyone who hasn't seen the show yet, 5 STARS! If you love to dance, have a good time, and need a picnic for your senses, do it! Seriously though, buy your tickets before they leave for London! More about the theatre - they have wonderfully high ceilings and an easily accessible theatre right in Union Square. The have many bathrooms as well as a fun bar on the lower level. The coat check was a little shady, but I'm not going to complain too much about that since it was only $2. Overall, great theatre especially for Fuerza Bruta, it worked perfectly! This past weekend I went to see Fuerzabruta and it was a-freaking-mazing. I'm told, though, that the previous production, De La Guarda is on the homoerotic side (more towards my tastes) than the breeder-rotic side. Still never had I seen such a performance. It was like a rave and a performance art piece at the same time. I AM told that there will be 'boys night' on August 1st. Unfortunately, I will be out of town :-( read more

Lights, colors, sounds...Fuerza bruta! What a show! Stimulating and full of energy! I enjoyed the small theatre, and the interactive show. But if you have trouble with crowds, or claustrophobia, I definitely would not recommend the show. Thankfully I wore flat shoes, and I was totally soaked by the ends of the show! Small theater down near union square. For the last year they have been letting the Irish rep theater fill the space. All of the play have had Irish themes. The play now showing has two actors in Uganda the main character spends the whole time in tub. Writing was very funny. Sounds weird but really enjoyable. read more

The theater itself is nice. The seats are really uncomfortable though . Basically stackable ballroom seats. Went last night to see In of Itself. First of all if you paid the $230 for the first three rows you got robbed. There is absolutely no reason not to buy the cheapest seats for this show. The theater is so small it makes zero difference where you sit. Although paying the $230 might be worth it because you would be closer to the exit when the show is over. I couldn't wait for this thing to be over and run for the exit. It's over acted. It's obvious there are plants in the audience. The big trick in the end is underwhelming. Some people were really digging it but we thought the stories were long and uninteresting. Basically a guy who talks and talks and then throws in a card trick. Boom. read more
