I went to get my brows threaded tonight on a Monday evening. I like to go to places like this when they're not busy, so they don't feel rushed. I don't like losing half an eyebrow because there is a line of 15 women (and some men who realize that bushy brows are out), waiting impatiently for their turn, causing stress on the employees. When I arrived, I noticed that they had moved directly across the hall to a much larger, brighter and more modern space. They have snazzy new comfortable seating, and added several chairs to accommodate many customers at once. I was impressed, as the last time I was in, they were squeezed in a smaller place with only 3 chairs and tacky decor. It was the perfect night for a threading. The mall was empty, and there was only one other customer ahead of me. I signed in and took a seat. They have a nice display of products available for purchase that I browsed over while I waited. It was a short wait. Maria was the only one working and had to take a call before she started on my brows, but was brief with the customer on the line, and apologized to me afterwards. I took a seat and explained to her how I wanted my brows shaped. I've been getting my brows threaded for about 5 years and typically have tears streaming from my eyes during the process, but she caused very little pain. She didn't pinch my skin and I didn't walk out inflamed. Moreover, my brows were shaped exactly how I requested. She didn't rush, but she didn't take forever either. She was efficient and skilled. This place immediately caught my eye when I walked by it. I've been getting my eyebrows threaded for years now and this place looked nice and clean. The technician (not sure what to call her) was gentle and listened to what I wanted. Surprisingly, it didn't hurt much, as I've experienced this with other places. She let me hold a mirror and look in it frequently to provide feedback. She then decided to try up selling me by showing me a brow powder that she said was awesome. I agree it looked very natural and I almost fell for the $25.99 price tag until I saw the brand name. I'm a makeup artist who is very familiar with brands of varying pricing. She was trying to sell me a Klean Colors eyebrow kit, which sells for $1.99 for $25.99. I decided to look up the product while in the store to show them the true price and was told "he" just told them how much to charge. After this admission I was rushed out of the store. STAY AWAY This place is TERRIBLE. I have an allergy to wax and have to get my brows/lio/chin threaded and have just moved to the area from Chicago. When I asked my classmates if they know of anywhere that does threading, everyone said they know theres one in the mall, so thats where I went THERE IS A FULL LINE OF MISSING HAIR THROUGH ONE OF MY BROWS, the shape is inconsistant, there are patches of missing hair and patches on the brow bone, not part of the eyebrow, that were missed completely. The lady filled them in with makeup and THEN showed me the brows, claiming my eyebrows were the problem. The makeup brush she used was DIRTY and she took makeup straight out of the pot (as a licensed cosmetologist myself, this is a HUGE NO NO). I had a reaction to this product!!! With my lip and chin, there are FRICTION BURNS from the string all over my face. There are lines on my lip, my lip was BLEEDING. To top it all off, the whole service cost a FORTUNE - $28! I usually pay half that! I understand it's a limited marked in VA but that is just outrageous. I AM NEVER GOING BACK AGAIN AND RECOMMEND EVERYONE STAY FAR FAR AWAY. read more

Never will I ever get my eyelashes done here again. They did not tell me any after care instructions. Also the lashes were applied to not just one of my eye lashes at a time but several eyelashes at a time. So now they are ripping out my natural eyelashes and leaving me with slim to none natural lashes. Very very disappointed about how they turned out as well. read more

Beware of the upsell. I walked in and asked for a brow and upper lip. Apparently their definition of each of those is very narrow. She ended up doing nearly my whole face by incrementally telling me I had patches here and there she could take care of. No mention that these patches constituted new "charge zones" all of which added up to $50. I even told her no a couple of times and she kept pushing. She made sure to do just one brow before working on other zones she was pushing, so I couldn't just walk out like I wanted. I've been getting this done for years at a variety of salons and I've never paid that much or felt so taken advantage of by a service provider. read more

I'm a male and wanted to get my eyebrows done but instead of them telling me that they won't do my eyebrows all they said was "No men!". I asked them why and she couldn't give me answer. At least give me a reason instead of pushing away customers. read more

If I could give no star I would. I went to this place because they had a Groupon for lash extensions for $29.00. The price should have tipped me off that there was something wrong. The lashes at NY Thread are applied while you are sitting in a barber chair, they use the false eyelashes that I have purchased at Ulta that are groups of three lashes. They were applied using black false eyelash glue (not the glue that you should use for extensions) and she said I have to keep my eye open while she applied them. She kept getting the glue in my eye and under the lid, there were huge clumps of glue and the entire job took her 30 minutes (extensions typically take an hour). By the time she was done I just wanted out of there. Horrible experience, I couldn't stand the big clumps of glue and by morning the lashes on the sides were on my pillow. Since she used false eyelash glue the lashes came off very easily the next day. I talked myself into it by thinking that they are fairly new, normally do threading and maybe they are trying to get into the lash extension business and Groupons help bring in business. I was wrong. I don't know why I didn't leave as soon as I realized that what I was getting was a sloppy application of false eyelashes and not lash extensions. All I can say is that I am an optimist and kept thinking it would get better. Please don't make the same mistake I did. Found this place several weeks ago and had been there twice before today. Different person. So I tell her that I wanted my brows cleaned up and not to thin them out. She says okay. After a several minutes, she hands me the mirror. And what has she done? Thinned my brows! I then tell her that's not what I wanted. She said my brows had no shape and she shaped them. Why did she thin them out as well? She tells me that she can thicken them the next time I visit. SERIOUSLY? Does she really think I am returning to a place that has folks who don't listen. I am so pissed. I'm a 20%+ tipper but not today. This would have been a great opportunity for them to retain my business. Oh and make sure you ask for the price before they start...overheard a couple of folks very surprised at the final cost of threading...I think it was $50 bucks for two people. Ridiculous. The single worst experience I had with threading ..... I was clear from the beginning on how much I wanted to take off and of course she went crazy and took off half of my eyebrow .... when I saw it I freaked out and told her why she did that ....she said it was small hairs so she cleaned them ..... that's the whole point of having the pre threading conversation to let my eyebrows grow and only wanted to clean up the top .... and to add insult to injury she was arguing with me the whole time .... DO NOT GO HERE! They do not listen to what you want. I had one eyebrow that was a little uneven, so I asked her to shape it out to fit my other. I ended up with two very different eyebrow shapes. They tried to tell me it was my blonde hair. But, after going home and filling them in I still felt they were uneven. Back I drove. I explained to the lady how I felt, so she tried to fill in my eyebrows. She said they looked even and her minion agreed with her. They did not. One eye looks lifted and the other looks like it is being dragged down. They do not listen to their customers! Do not go! read more

Terrible service and very unprofessional! Let me start with my mom getting false eyelashes here a couple months ago and them turning out very bad looking extremely fake the lady refused to help her get them off that day said that she was too close to close and wouldn't be able to do it! Then the main lady has been gone and just got back and she's been doing my eyebrows for at least a year. I do feel she had been rushing lately and while she was gone to visit her country I started going to another lady and I really liked her. Well the head lady was back today and I explained to her I really like the way my eyebrows head but she started doing my eyebrows and there was a huge chunk taken out of my eyebrows. She tried to explain to me that the other lady did it and asked who had done last time and that was why they looked so bad. It is noticeably a big gap in my eyebrow I had to immediately leave and go to Sephora to get make up to fix it and I had just explained to her I was leaving for vacation the following day. I pulled pictures on my phone and showed her it was nothing like that prior to me walking in. I started going to Dolly to get my brows & upper lip threaded a few years ago before she opened New York Threads. I think she does a great job, and my brows always look good. Since I found Dolly, I don't trust my brows to anyone else. I live in woodbridge and drive down I95 to spotsylvania mall just to see Dolly when I could easily go to a kiosk at Potomac Mills. But I do that because I know when I see Dolly, it is going to be done right. New York threads is clean and I usually go on Sundays and don't have to wait long. My brows always look good and work is fast. I've been to other places in the past where folks did my brows with more pain and mistakes (one brow not shaped the same way as the other, brow lengths not the same, hairs left behind that should have been removed or too much hair taken off one brow, etc). But I know when I get in Dolly's chair, she knows what she's doing. And that's worth the drive. read more
