As a rule, I am generous in my reviews. In addition, I'm pretty low maintenance, as is my husband. With that being said, I do not recommend this hotel. I had seen the other reviews before booking, but due to my own tardiness in planning, we really had no other options. We stayed in the motel section. The room was generally clean, but reeked of smoke. It had more space than I expected, which led me to believe that this motel (as others have surmised) may be used for families without other places to stay. The beds were in need of new mattresses and the ironing board's cover was stained - with blood, I believe. A lightbulb was burned out as well. Last but not least, I noticed red spots near my ankles the next morning - bed bugs? No thank you! The place does have a certain curb appeal, which is deceiving given the rooms' conditions. We stay in the Barre area frequently for Norwich hockey games. We've driven by the Hollow several times and wondered about it. We finally booked a room for a last minute trip and were pleasantly surprised! Easy check-in and the proprietor is very nice. The room decor is dated but everything was clean and functional. I am a housekeeping supervisor and it passed my inspection! Beds were comfortable, and the room was large with mini fridge, coffeemaker, microwave and a separate counter with a sink and two-burner cooktop. Soap, shampoo, lotion and tissues were all provided. There was even a small patio at the back. We will definitely stay again. read more

I wasn't expecting a LOT from this place, but it certainly is more of a motel than an inn. It reminds me of those motels in the movies - you know the ones... Dark, dated, no real locks on the doors, fluorescent lighting, old towels, hospital-like bedsheets. The room had a strange, old smell, but I couldn't figure it out what it was. I do have to say though that they all have a good amount of space in the rooms. The free breakfast wasn't great (muffins, bagels, cereal, waffles) and they also weren't great at refilling things without guests asking for more. This was one of the cheapest options in the area but for good reason, there are some other ones that were slightly more expensive that might be worth a try. This is a fine place but just go in not expecting much. read more

Rooms live up to the supersize billing... One of the blankets on the beds had 6-8 burn holes in a supposed non-smoking room. Small kitchenettes are a plus. Microwave, small fridge, two burner stove and plenty of cabinet space will make a longer stay more comfortable and affordable. Rates are very reasonable. read more

This place is a complete dump! Worst motel I've ever stayed in and that's saying a lot as I've traveled the world. My room stinks and the place is filthy including the bathtub. This was a nice room for $65. The room was clean and the staff was friendly. Our continental breakfast was nice there were eggs, sausage, toast, English muffins, bagels, pastries, a waffle iron, juice, coffee, tea, and 2 types of cereal. read more

Checked in at 2pm heading to Burlington so I didn't have to bother the staff late at night knowing I'd be returning at or after midnight. Did not come up to room at 2pm. Upon returning at midnight, we found the room dirty and never cleaned from prior guests. The bed was slept in, dirty towels on the bathroom floor, all soaps used and dirty and the tip for the "maids" still on the night stand. Did not expect a 5 star hotel for the price but did expect at least clean sheets. Tried to go to lobby (locked) and had to stand at the front door (10 degrees outside) for 15 minutes trying to call with the front door phone which does NOT work. Had to hold down the phone to call with my cell phone so I wouldn't get a busy signal, the owner or someone finally came out angrily, would not refund my room, and said he'd change the sheets. No other option but to stay here so we were stuck. No compensation for gross room or inconvenience. Made me feel like I was inconveniencing him for HIS room not being cleaned. Gross, will want future Vermont travelers to stay away. Highly disappointing even read more

Run far. Run fast. Booked an efficiency. First room was labeled non-smoking. Didn't get 2 feet into the room and was driven out of the room by the stench of old cigarette smoke. Person took us to an "updated" room. I haven't seen appliances that old in a long time, but initially looked okay... However, found the handle on frig broken off and there were dirty dishes in dishwasher. Told manager to get some detergent. .. he tried to give me cleaning agent for a Bissell. Figured we make the best of it for a night and went to get some dinner. Came back and tried to set up the sofa bed. Manager had given us 2 sheets, but no blanket. Went down to the front desk again... only to be told he didn't know if he had any blankets. Came back to the room and found that sofabed was broken on one corner and the springs were pushing through! That was it. Packed up and left at 10:30 at night after getting a refund. Went down the street to the Quality inn which was a definite improvement. You really do not want to stay here! read more

We stayed here because of it's affordability, and it is close to Norwich University. There are a lot of good places to eat, and see around this inn so the location is definitely convenient! This inn is big, it looks maintained and the owner lives on site so if you need anything then he is definitely there. We stayed here for four days, although the room is outdated (and some furniture looks like it definitely needs replacing) the room was clean. Our stay was very comfortable. Breakfast was satisfying, nothing fancy. So, if you're looking for an affordable place to stay with no fancy schmancy then this is it... otherwise, if you're picky then you're better off paying $100+ a night somewhere in Montpelier. read more

The Inn part is clean and the rooms are spacious. The decor is very retro but comfortable. If you need a modern or trendy place this is NOT for you. The motel rooms were very scary. The room we were originally in was in the motel part. The door had no lock, the sheets were holey and the room smelled strangely, also there were a few homeless people in the parking lot by the motel. The front desk switched our room to one in the Inn and as I mentioned previously the room was clean and spacious. Carbon monoxide detectors went off in the middle of the night in adjacent room apparently from the guests having the heat on. Fire dept came (very exciting) and used a meter to inspect our room. Everything was fine in our room. Other than the excitement with the FD and sketchy motel visit, I'd recommend this place as long as you are in the INN. read more

Ewwwwwww! Stayed here because it's cheap but it's bad place. Bad juju, bad service, bad smell, no breakfast, all around WTF? Checked in for a quick ski overnight and not expecting much but was greeted with a strong yet interesting smell of mold and cigarette smoke on walking in the door. Interesting smells in hotel rooms are rarely good things, ey? Great, but we'll get used to the smell... Woke up with a weird allergic reaction and sniffles which I'll guess I could attribute to the moldy smell. Room was big so it had that going for it... Didn't want to sleep under the covers for fear of what might be lurking under there. Woke up at 7am and the 'continental breakfast' was not ready so we just left though they claimed they would have breakfast from 6:30 to 9... read more

I have stayed here in the past and am glad to see they are finally updating a little at a time. my room was in the motel section, which is the older part, a little musty, but clean. the bathroom is updated. the TV is OK, but the channel box is hanging from the wall and was hard to use remote. this stay I was by myself visiting family, which meant I only slept and had breakfasts there. breakfast is lacking and a little unsanitary for my taste (a tub of butter to reuse, as well as a cheap peanut butter to reuse), eggs and sausage are gross. my phone didn't work, don't know why as I had free Wi-Fi... I got a good deal online so wasn't going to complain about such small things.... until I came home about 10pm to find housekeeping didn't lock my door...OK, it's Vermont and I'm no wimp, so I checked my room, said OK, small error, NP. the next night, the same thing... OK, I'm irritated and frustrated seeing I am a woman traveling alone, decided to talk to front desk in the morning. so I talked to the clerk and he said, oh, you must have the unlocking door... I thought he was kidding, but he wasn't....perturbed, but he said he'd talk to housekeeping. I left a note for them, nicely asking them to please make sure my door is locked, they had to move the note to get to their tip, and threw out the note.....(this is a regular lock, not a key card)... again, home late and tired, and surely would have a locked door tonight...NOT. NOW I am pissed off. the next morning I stomped to the owner and told him my grievance, first he said he couldn't understand me, them he asked if I wanted another room...seriously???? NO, I JUST WANT MY DOOR LOCKED! (you just have to turn the flip if the key doesn't work) SOO, tonight I came home to an unlocked door. I'm tempted to call the cops as I feel unsafe, but it's my last night and I'm home at 10pm again....so if you want to be robbed or raped stay in room 206, obliviously, that's the door you can't lock. it's not with the savings to stay here. read more

Stayed 2-13 and 2-14 for a hiking trip. We didn't read the reviews before booking, but I'm glad we didn't. Our room was great. We had room 501 (main building, corner room...as opposed to some rooms that are in the motel-like blocs of 6 rooms). King bed, very comfy, suite style (separate bedroom away from LR), and full kitchen (not that we used it, but the mini-fridge was operational and kept the beer and cheese cold...been in many a hotel/mote room where the fridge is worthless). Linens were clean, TV worked great, well worth the price. The breakfast was a little weak, but really who cares about that in the scheme of things. I'd stay again in a heartbeat. Maybe they "cleaned" up their act after all of the bad reviews? read more

First of all, this place only got 2 stars because the location and price can't be beat. It is very centrally located, we were able to ski a different place each day without having to drive any crazy distances. It is reasonably priced, but you get what you pay for! The rooms are larger than most hotel rooms, but they are pretty dirty. Our floor had a burn hole, the comforter had some disgusting stains on the underside (you know the one that touches the sheet your laying under), and the bench at the foot of the bed was filthy and stained. The breakfast is advertised as "extensive"...it's not, not even close. The drink selection includes: room temperature milk, apple juice, cranberry juice, and coffee. The food menu contains: bagels, 2 kinds of cereal, a waffle maker, and some less than impressive bakery items (store bought, pre-packaged- but open and cut in half lol). We stayed there 4 nights and one morning we scored with some English muffins! No fruit, no water, no yogurt...nothing even remotely healthy...oh and your not allowed to take your breakfast to your room or out the door with you. Long story short, if your looking for a semi nice place, this isn't it! read more

The place can defiantly use an update. Breakfest wasn't 20 piece, wasn't good at all! The pool was great, but no hot tub when we were there. Said, was under repair but never was for the week we were there. The staff was great! Took care of everything, they were really nice folks. Even, let us check out late. Never really expected much from this place other than a place to crash for the weekend when in town for the gun show. I have been staying here for the last three years , and this one was by far the worst I think the room we got was one of there tenant rooms the room smelled like across between a city bus station bathroom and a ashtray covered up by what appeared to be a coat of paint that didn't help it. And this was a no smoking room .The pillows and pillow cases were stained yellow thank god I had a sleeping bag with me The bathroom vanity looked like it got into a fight with a sledgehammer and then screwed back together Mold on the bathroom ceiling tiles with a coating of paint over it. Greasy handprints everywhere and a stained and yellow shower curtain and the best part I love the long term storage of the broken down car frozen in the snow bank sorry hollow inn that's the last money you will ever get from me. read more

Pulled off onto this place on a Sunday night because friends and I did not want to make the late night drive back from VT to MA. The owner/manager was a bit sketchy and overall just a sketchy vibe. I excepted a lot more for paying the price of 76$. We could have paid that amount and stayed at a nice clean hotel rather then a motel that is straight up the set of a typical motel horror movie. It was unclear whether or not indoor cigarettes were allowed too. The sheets also were kinda grody. Probably wouldn't recommend to anyone unless you're truly at a low point of desperation. read more

I had to stay here for one night for work. It was one of the worst places I've ever stayed in, including hostels I stayed in while backpacking in Europe. I had selected one of the hotel "suite" rooms so that I could avoid the door directly to the outside (basic safety thing as a young female traveling alone). Too bad I get to the room and there is a French door directly out to the unkempt back road and area by the pool. The room smelled musty, the furniture, walls, light shades, curtains, walls, etc were all covered in stains and dirt. I wouldn't even go near the bed until I thoroughly searched the whole thing. Even the. I'm debating sleeping in my car instead. The bathroom was awful. I went to shower and I'm glad I looked at the shower head as there was black and red mold ALL over it. The towels and counters had other people's hair on it. Also, I was in one of the "accessible" rooms yet there was a tub instead of the actually accessible lip-free roll in showers. The front desk staff told met hat the wifi would work on my side of the hotel, but not on the other section. I went to use the "fitness center" and found one ancient treadmill that couldn't even change angle, and three weight machines that are at least twice as old as I am. Not to mention that to get to it I had to walk through the pitch black basement and look for the light switches. I don't think I've ever been so uncomfortable in a gym setting. When I was getting my bags out of the car I overheard a guy trying to negotiate a monthly rate for one of the motel rooms. That solidified my suspicion that the entire motel section is actually used as an alternative style of short term low income housing. I definitely would not recommend this for anyone ever. Most of the features it pitches are far from what one would generally expect, even at a low price, lower tiered hotel. I actually wish that I could have given it only half a star. read more
