There are a couple of machines that take cash or card for payment. New cards are $5. To enter you place your card on the sensor and it allows to let the turnstile open for you. I was traveling to Clark/Lake street, which happens to be a popular station. At first, I was a bit worried that my mid size suitcase may cause a hamper and be in the way, but it was just fine. The train was a nice size so I wasn't uncomfortable. Before each stop an announcement is made to name the stop location and the side of the train to exit. Lake street happens to be a popular stop so there was a mass exit of riders. This stop had escalators but the last place I had to exit was a stairway. Good thing I like going to the gym. See living in Chicago I'm use to my buses going in a straight line. The CTA has ruined me in my travels in foreign countries. This bus drives by the famous water tower so it feels a little like Europe. My daughter thinks its Rapunzel's tower, which is cute every time we pass it. As the bus approaches the lake it turns right on Fairbanks and left on Illinois as it makes it way to Navy Pier. Yes Toads Wild Ride and my European Adventure begins. I've always thought "this is Oak Park (land of money), WHY does this place look like the bus station from Total Recall?" Then I put 2 and 2 together: end-of-the-line stop.....conductor kicks all the hobos off the train......hobos take up residency on benches. Well, that explains the distinctive hobo smell. But what about the badly-crumbling stairs going up and down? There really is no excuse for that. Commuter safety concern, hello! Oh, and the two Ventra ticket-issuing machines are MAJOR finicky when it comes to swiping your plastic. Way too many times I've stood there for what feels like an hour, desperately trying to complete a credit/debit card transaction, and getting rejected 80% of the time. Sure, I could carry cash and avoid the problem altogether, but that's not how I roll. I thrive on making things more difficult than they need to be. The convenience mart on the ground level is halfway decent and staffed by some friendly folks. Other than that, this 'L' station is the pits. Blecch.
