You know when you think you've reviewed a place because you go there on the reg but then you look on Yelp and you find you haven't reviewed that place? ... is probably the most boring opening line I've ever written, but hey, the truth hurts. Or bores. Whichever is more interesting. I like this Lemongrove branch because Lemongrove is a relic from my childhood, it's a weird little shopping centre with half the stores never open and it feels like walking into a secret past. The food at NS is cheap, it's pretty great, like you get XLB soup dumplings 8 for $8, or a big steaming bowl of Shanghai noodles with dried shrimp and shallots for $10, or a huge plate of fist-sized prawn wontons in chilli oil and peanut sauce for $14. Those meals between 2 of us almost ended us, I hate walking away from a table not finishing everything but we didn't even get close. Sorry little dumplings, I just couldn't find the room. And Christmas is coming up, I can't get too full too early, ya feel me?

As you walk in, the staff are making dumplings to your right.

It seems like there are numerous 'New Shanghai' restaurants popping up everywhere in Sydney. I was introduced to their Ashfield restaurant, but this is one of the two Chatswood branches (yes, there is one in Chatswood Chase too!) I personally like this location the best. The Ashfield one is annoying (lousy service, too crowded etc), the Chase one I've only been to once and didn't enjoy it. They have a vast menu for very reasonable prices. Reoccuring order: - Xiao Long Bao (Pork soup dumplings), not as good as Din Tai Fung, but still great. - Baby Bok Choy in Garlic (photo) - Rice Cake w/ XO Sauce (photo) Other items I would LOVE to try are: - Pan fried pork dumplings - Pan fried dumplings I'm not 100% sure if they do credit cards here, last time it was strictly CASH ONLY, but I can't remember if I have been able to do it on previous visits.

Dumplings, dumplings and more dumplings! This places always busy! Generally have to take a ticket and wait but it's worth it! Pan fried pork dumplings, lamb and leek, green bean stir fry, pork buns all delicious! Definitely quick dinner on a fri night. Always pleAsed as punch with this place :)

Gotta take the pic quickly with my family around!

This is my absolute go - to place whenever I am staying in Chatswood. I go to the outlet in the food court at Chatswood Chase, but I believe there is another one around in Lemongrove. Dumplings being made right in front of us as fast as they are appearing out on the tables. There is often a line up outside the door and there is no reason to wonder why. This place is cracking. There is nothing comparable in home-town Perth, food wise. Which makes it all that more special when I can get there. Do yourself a favour if you're in the area. I don't think you will be disappointed. [I saw Sydney Yelpers had an Elite event here. I am sooo jealous!]

Holy gut-bust. I spent an Elite event here the likes of which I've never experienced. This event, a proper sit-down meeting at a handful of tables at New Shanghai in Chatswood Chase was like they were trying to kill us with food. Heaps and heaps of food so delicious you couldn't stop. The spare rib mouthfuls were saucy. The edamame were fresh. The drunken chicken was flavourful. The arrays of dumplings - steamed and pan-fried just didn't stop coming, and we were fighting over them. The crispy duck pancakes were actually in puffy split pieces of dough, not thin rice paper. The pot of saucy pork belly was juicy and decadent. Even the rice was soaked in XO sauce, making it sweet and tasty. Desserts were almost too sweet to finish. It's noon the next day and I have no desire for lunch yet. It's a funky restaurant, much better than you'd guess from its location on a food court. Decor is fun. Service was quick and friendly. The kitchen area can be seen through glass if you want to see how it's all done. Delicious and amazing.

If you are big fan of dumplings, this place will never disappoint you. From my numerous visits to this restaurant, I can tell every simple dish such as dumplings and fried rice is awesome. Whenever I feel like casual Chinese dish, I often chose this place. There are two shops in Chatswood, but I prefer this shop in Chase Shopping Centre because of the retro Shanghai-like atmosphere.

I was one fortunate Sydneysider to have been invited to this establishment for another company I freelance write for. A seven course degustration was enjoyed. Awesome dumplings with a glass of wine to accompany (and ideally match) each dish. It was like my lucky day. Flashy service. You can order this banquet with or without wine. In future it might be best to skip the wine and go for the water instead. This will only set you back $49 instead of $69. This banquet is $69 without wine. The mangement have had this seven course dumpling degustation on the menu for the last couple of months now, and it has been fairly well received. I will be back. The recent addition of the non-alcoholic cocktails to the menu also packs some serious punch. Laid back environment. A great feed.

Nice place for lunch. They have expanded next door as well and now there is less of a wait. The seating is less cramped. Service is still good and so is the food. With the increase in the number of places to eat in the Chase and Westfield competition is hotting up. This should be good for the consumer. Let market forces dictate who will survive.

Shang Xiang Bao! ~$10.50

There's a Chinese saying that goes along the lines of "eating buns till your full" (buns and full sound very similar in Chinese! Like play on words) and when you're eating Shanghai-nese food, that is probably what's going to happen in the end. The portions here are pretty big for a decent price - $10 will get you the Sheng jian Bao (pork dumplings, well more like buns, the savoury kind with the soup inside, that have been fried on their bottoms to crispiness and perfection) - that's about 8 buns! Best to share! Another favourite of course is the classic xiao long Bao (set you back around $9.50), the delicate dumplings with the soup inside - careful, the soup is actually super hot! Grab the dumpling on its head with your chopstick so that you don't puncture a hole through the dumpling and the soup doesn't leak out! #tipoftheday haha Their hokkein fried noodles are also a favourite of mine. Service is frantic and average for such a busy place but hey if the food is good then I'm happy.

We are so cool!

This is the story of the waitress who lost her restaurant a star. Believe me, unless you steal my duck fat, I don't hold a grudge... but I can't let go of that feeling! You know, the one you get where you feel that all that is wrong in the waiter's day/life/family/Pokemon profile is your fault. Audrey agreed with me so don't argue! So this a three-star review of four-star Chinese food. The dumplings are nice, well cooked and very tasty. There is an elegant harmony to a dumpling that must be respected: the subtle yeast flavour of the elastic dough - not chewy, elastic - has to prepare your taste buds for the liquid explosion of salty broth. It then instantly combines with a one fifth vinegar and four fifth soy sauce mix, to allow for the fleshy, powerful explosion of, in tonight's instance, crab meat ... or maybe I'm just overthinking it. Pork buns are usually a bit dry on the outside and soggy on the inside. New Shanghai's pork bun are thought like a soft shell taco, with a slice of pork belly and zucchini inside a folded bun slice: a result neither dry nor soggy! On this positive note, remember: a spoon of duck fat a day - repeat after me - keeps the doctor away!

There seemed to be a Din Tai Fung in just about every food court we saw on this trip, so I wanted to give them a go. Two of us shared the Pork Dumpling Xiao Long Bao (4 pcs) and the Fried Pork Chop with Noodle Soup for a light lunch. Neither of us were too impressed. But at least I had the chance to try it and to get it off my mind.

We do this because our hip friends will recognize the location on the Facebook status update, and maybe even 'like' it. There's a qualification: I don't like xiaolongbao. Other than the baffling technical skill I imagine it takes to put soup inside a dumpling, I find them with as little purpose as they have flavour. I truly could eat ten little bamboo servings of the things and remain unsated. Gladly, Din Tai Fung does serve other stuff - the pork and bean dish is my favourite, though the serving is puny, as it is with the passable fried rice. I seem to recall actually getting my fill of it at the Westfield location - the one here was much smaller. Meanwhile, don't order one of the pork buns. It won't be what you want. It's crap. We're in Sydney! North Sydney's a cheap Opal trip away from a heady world of delicious dumplings in Chinatown, and closer still to a classy joint like Uncle Mings, where you can have your bamboo steamers and a crisp lager to go with it. Din Tai Fung may have been something, once, but now it's for people who know no better than to eat at literally the closest spot to the ATM.

I unhappily settled for noodles because they didn't have the dumplings I wanted to try and it was only 7pm. The other dumpling order we put through was a half and half and seemed to be available, but 10 minutes later they came back to us saying they also didn't have one of the two. Wish they would have told us earlier, and it was slightly annoying by this point so we asked if we could cancel the order, but they had apparently started cooking the noodles. We were waiting and the dumplings came out, but no sign of the noodles for a good while, which was strange considering they had started on them a lot earlier. The noodles were so oily, I didn't eat them after a couple of bites, and the veggies were very bland. Overall, don't think I'll go back. Food (if it was even available) took too long and was pretty standard. Didn't meet my needs to warrant a second visit unfortunately.

Their dumplings are made fresh everyday which is always great to know and they have quite a wide range of fillings. I would suggest choosing dumplings in chilli oil or fried for extra flavour and texture as the dry ones can be rather ordinary. It was also unfortunate that the beef noodle soup was extremely bland.

The restaurant had no more than four parties when we arrived for a late dinner on a Monday night around 8pm. Then again, Lynn isn't very easy to spot if you're strolling along Castlereagh St, which may explain the emptiness. It's pretty standard to order xiao long baos at a Shanghainese restaurant. So of course, we got one order of #701 XLBs, along with #801 Shanghai Noodles with Shredded Pork and Vegetables and #805 Vegetable and Pork Wontons in Noodles with Hot and Spicy Sauce. The XLBs weren't amazing. The pork meat was bland, and the soup was very light and not as flavorful as I hoped. However, the skin was perfect: delicate and thin, yet sturdy enough to hold the meat and soup, and it had good texture. The Shanghai noodles weren't special either. I liked the variety of veggies and pork, but the dish overall needed more salt as it was tasteless and lacked any depth. The wontons and noodles in a hot and spicy sauce was a very heavy dish. Noodles had a very thick, starchy texture. Wontons were generously stuffed with a large amount of filling, mainly shredded vegetables because I didn't taste the pork, and the skin was too thick and chewy. The sauce was extremely spicy, and it irked me when we weren't automatically given water refills when our glasses were clearly empty. Lynn is a huge restaurant, so it can accommodate large groups. It's also very clean and modern. Service wasn't rude, but they certainly weren't attentive either. The only reason we tried this place was because they had a takeaway menu available at our hotel. The menu looked promising, but after dining here, we left unimpressed.

Well, as much as I like the dumplings at DTF, I don't think they're THE BEST EVER...and not for the price you pay. So I started a search on other soup dumplings in the city and came across Lynn Shanghai, as it opened up relatively recently. The place is a little hard to find, the sign is small and it's actually inside a building so you have to walk through a lobby to get into the restaurant. The building is located next to the Scientology building (why, I don't know) and that's all you need to know to find it. The place is a lot bigger than anticipated, and there's an open kitchen so you can see the dumplings and food being made. The chefs all wear masks so you can feel relieved you aren't getting stank breath on your food. The menu is rather extensive and offers all sorts of cuisine from Shanghai, but I came for the dumplings. Pan fried and steamed please. For $8.80, you get 6 dumplings...not the cheapest but cheaper than DTF and just as good...if not BETTER. Seriously, I don't know what the fuss is about DTF, the dumplings are pretty small and while tasty, they're not that tasty. There also isn't much of a wait for this place as it's still relatively new, so if you're feening for some soup dumplings and don't want to queue at DTF, this is the place to go. I haven't been back to DTF since.
