Great location right in town, easy walk to all of the stores and restaurants. There are a few parking spaces here on the side of the building, and you can also get here by bus (there's a stop right here!). Call in advance to check availability and make a reservation: it's a small place! The communal kitchen is big, and you can use the coffee, tea and oatmeal (anything else you have to bring yourself). The kitchen has an 11pm curfew, so they're trying to keep it quiet here (this is not a party hostel; alcohol, smoking and drugs are banned!). The wifi is good. Enter with a key from the back door and use a code to enter the room. Sone notes about room 3; which is where I take off one star. Theoretically the room sleeps four as long as two are willing to share a full size bed, and as long as one can vault up to a bunk bed (the ladder is broken). So at the moment it's really a three person room. You'd better be very comfortable using a bathroom around those folks, because the room entry is through the bathroom, so anyone going from hallway to room and vice versa passes through the bathroom. Okay. It's the only room set up that way. The shower is great, there's lots of light and fans, but the main reason im taking off a star is because the room clearly wasn't cleaned before check in. The sink had brown stuff on it, which was easy enough to clean, but not what I would expect to see. There were also literal sprigs of weeds and wildflowers on the floor, which I picked up and put it the trash, but when you see mess that's that obvious, it makes you wonder what kinds of less obvious uncleanliness might be there... and good thing they provide ear plugs, because the room next door had a piano (ie someone practicing piano, not just playing music on a speaker), a dog and a toddler! read more

We were going to stay here a single night. We ended up cancelling our other hotel reservations and staying every night. This is easily the best hostel I've ever stayed in. (in the US, at least) Owner is incredibly kind and humorous. We stayed in two different private rooms and they both felt like home. One even had a fridge, something that's hard to find in a hotel these days, let alone a hostel. Location is great, you can walk to everything. Only negative is that the parking can be kind of tricky. read more

My first experience at a hostel. Here's what I've understood. That if you're OK with an unusual sleeping arrangement hostels can offer inexpensive lodging and that what they lack in polish they make up for in personality. So.....on the night I stayed I was the only guest in the hostel but there's other apartments upstairs. I met only three people. The girl who checked me in behaved as though there was nothing else on the planet that she would least like to do than to deal with me. The one other guest who spoke to me had all the personality of a feral cat. And the third guest refused to speak or make eye contact. I couldn't get the wifi to work. If you check in and then leave but return after 10PM you're locked out. If you leave and try to return any time before 2PM you're also locked out. They ask you to strip the bed. And all that at a price not that much lower than I might expect to pay at a motel or other Airbnb location. The place was spotlessly clean but that's about the best I can say about it. read more

Awesome hostel & even more awesome area. My reasoning for 4 stars is because the place had a 10pm curfew. If you stay out past 10, you won't be able to get back in. We were there snowboarding & didn't get back from the mountain till 5. That meant no nap after our showers! Lol had to start our night early. read more

Let's cut right to the important part: even if you're not staying here, you can take a hot shower for just $5. They'll even give you a towel. Unbeatable for us dirt cheap dirtbags who are spending every day out climbing/hiking/biking/running and every night in a tent. Only available while the staff are on duty, from 4pm to 10pm. Beyond that, it feels pretty swanky for a hostel. The rooms are nice, linens provided, not too many people packed into each one, there's a kitchen, and they have a nice common room with a TV and computer and board games and magazines and plenty of ways to while away the time. Their porch is relaxing (when there's not too much traffic), they have a good location (on the main drag and near the bus terminal, even though it's not within decent walking distance to Mohonk or Minnewaska, but I don't think anything is but a campsite). Coin-op laundry and wifi in-house as well. Substance-free inside, which is both good and bad. Not the cheapest hostel you'll see, but not bad. read more

Best deal in New Paltz, a town otherwise plagued with rampant NYC price inflation. The hostel has a pretty calm, happy atmosphere, and I picked up a bed in their 6 bed dorm for $30, which includes free tea, coffee and oatmeal. The good: everyone is friendly, the hostel is very quiet after 11pm, and the mattresses aren't plastic! The hostel is also located right next to the trailsways bus station and near the New Paltz nightlife. The bad: with a great deal comes great responsibility. If you are staying in a dorm room, they don't give you a key so you need to be back in the dorm by 10pm or they will lock you out. There's a weird split in the house. I inadvertently walked into a part of the house reserved for long term residents and was quickly shooed away. You also need to enter through the door in the back. Those are little things though... For the price and convenience, I'll be back. read more

What a great place! I stayed in room #4, a private room and bathroom, which was clean and comfortable. The staff was great and all the common areas were immaculate! The house has a great energy about it and it is walking distance to anything you could want. Without a doubt this will be my go to place to stay whenever I'm in the area!! read more

Stayed here for a next-day climbing trip to the Gunks. Drove from Boston and hit a TON of traffic. We were going to arrive later than the 10PM check-in time. I called, and the staff had no problem staying a little longer to help us out. Other than that they provide fresh linens, clean bathrooms, and a good location. I would stay here again. read more

Hostel is clean and staff is nice. However there is a very annoying 10pm curfew. You will get locked out if you are not in by then. They give you no key to the building so you must ring the doorbell every time to be let in by the one staff person that is on duty from 2pm to 10pm. I loved the town however, would not stay here again because I felt I could not explore the area as I would have liked. Only having access to the hostel from 2pm-10pm is ridiculous and I believe there are many ways to change it to make it more easily accessible and inviting to travelers. read more

The first floor common areas are nice: Bunk room, bathroom, and lounge are all in good shape. The second floor not so much: The private rooms need some TLC, and the bathrooms are comically tiny, using the toilet or the mini mini micro shower is awkward at best. read more

I had a terrible experience at this hostel. I'm a NP alumn and in the past few weeks I've stayed at this place 3 times. This time, when I came up for a vacation alone, I had the privilege of overhearing a staff meeting about myself, "the lady in room --... " (I'm genderqueer, for what's worth) ".. has been blacklisted for smoking weed in their room." This "blacklisting" was news to me, as was the alleged drug use. The manager stated that I had definitively been smoking marijuana in my room and that the room "reeked" after I left. I never smoked in that room. And though it is possible that my clothing smelled like weed (this is New Paltz, and it's 2015) I don't believe you can ban someone for a.) a smell or b.) suspicion. Naturally the puritanical manager didn't believe me so there was no apology for the false accusation or the fact that no one had informed me previously that there was even a problem until I was back and settled on my following visit. Instead he said he would "Let it go as long as it doesn't happen again" which is offensive because there was never a crime and it was a huge stressor on my vacation. Not great business tactics to accuse a patron - without any evidence whatsoever - who had spend approximately $200 with them in 3 weeks. I felt disrespected and degraded by the whole situation. In addition to their strict, conservative attitude, this hostel is nothing to "write home about." There's no real feeling of community, the space is cramped and decrepit and only moderately clean. The showers are tiny, all shared rooms are co-ed (a safety concern for some) and the staff is not particularly sociable. I've been a guest at hostels across the country and this is the most conservative and least comfortable one I've experienced - and in New Paltz, no less! It's cheaper than a hotel, but perhaps more trouble than it's worth. read more
