This is an Airbnb that is more like a hostile/bed&breakfast vibe: The first level apartment was charming with very comfy beds. Tim was a friendly host who provided a nice breakfast and great stories. Eating on the patio with other guests while enjoying the birds and river was memorable! The 1847 house is full of wonderful character right down to the creaky floors and steep stairs. But the apartment was very dirty: large dust clumps, pill under table, food bits in and around sink with bugs flying around, very dusty/grimy. Two windows didn't have privacy curtains making our daughters uncomfortable sleeping in the living room. And viewed from those windows was clutter in the adjoining indoor patio and crutches leaning against a fence. The bathroom was tiny, very tiny dirty shower with used loofa's inside, no TP holder and a plate of mostly used bars of soap. The common rooms were very cluttered. That beautiful long table was too cluttered to visit and the living room was cluttered with laundry and drying laundry. But if you go into it knowing that, it is a great experience because of the interactions with the people, location and this charming home. And it was our most comfy bed of the trip!! read more

I loved The innski. It felt like a safe haven for college students, intellectuals, artists, and travelers alike. There's thrift shop charm, art galore, and comfortable beds with down comforters. You cannot beat the view of the Hudson and Catskill Mountains. It's quiet, safe, and exudes warmth. If you're looking for luxury, this is not your place. Some of it is rough around the edges. If your looking for a beautiful, historic home and a side dish of "quirk" you will enjoy yourself. Tim is a great host. Not sure if he makes the granola that's served for breakfast, but it sure is good. If my daughter picks Bard as her school, we will most certainly be back. The Suminski Innski B&B (also known as Tim's House or Mansion) is an absolutely unique place. With it's own spirit (thanks to it's owner Tim Voell), breathtaking views to the Hudson River and Catskill Mountains, and movie-like ornate parlors. Come here, take a room, grab some beer or brew a cup of tea and enjoy beautiful sunsets sitting on the porch with white columns. Rates are flexible and a nice discount is available for journalists, teachers, farmers, social workers, aid-workers, veterans, bicyclists and care-givers. (Special offers for the artists as well!) Yes the outside surroundings are lovely BUT you are not sleeping outside. Unfortunately you have to sleep inside. This place is more like a bare bones hostel then a B&B. It needs a thorough cleaning to get rid of the dog hair, dust, musty smell etc. As one reviewer mentioned, it is like renting a bedroom (no locks on the doors) in someone's home (which needs to be cleaned). Upon entering the property and checking out the "bedroom" we almost decided to leave but since we had driven a long way (came up for an event) and staying one night, we decided to "roll with it" but could not wait to leave in the AM. I would rate this place 1.5 stars but you can't do that so I gave it 2 stars. read more

I had my wedding at Clermont State Historic Site this past June, and we decided to rent out the whole Suminski to house the wedding party and some close friends. Tim also catered our rehearsal dinner and a small party for friends and family who were in town the night before the wedding. I could not have been happier with the house, or with Tim and his team as hosts--staying there with my closest friends was one of the loveliest parts of the whole weekend. This B&B feels like you've come to a friend's place (if your friend had a huge, gorgeous house perched on the Hudson)--Tim is generous and flexible, and rolled with our many requests (extra fridge for our wedding cake? Sure! Friend wants to crash on the couch? No problem!). It's a beautiful house, with eclectic decorations and a very casual feel. It might not be for everyone--most rooms share bathrooms, and the style could be a little too laid back for some--but it was absolutely perfect for us. Tim and his staff made delicious breakfasts and, more importantly, a really great family-style rehearsal dinner buffet for 18 of us. We loved spending time out on the huge porch, watching the river, and talking until late in the downstairs living rooms. There are definitely fancier, plusher places in the Hudson Valley, but we felt absolutely at home here in a way you wouldn't at a posher B&B. If you're looking for a friendly, laid-back, beautiful place to stay in the area, you couldn't do better. read more

I found the Suminski Inski on Airbnb and it looked amazing. I immediately booked it. I arrived and it looked even better. Incredible location, views, and rooms. This is a stately home from the 1800s that has been almost entirely restored to it's former glory. I say almost in that it is a huge undertaking to make it perfect. If you are looking for perfection don't stay here, but if you want warmth and character by all means do stay here! I stayed in August 2012, met incredible guests and hung out on the front wrap around porch overlooking the Husdon drinking red wine watching the sunset. My daughters go to Bard College and I've decided to make the Suminski Inski my place while they are in college for the next four years. Tim, the innkeeper, makes a great breakfast and does his best to make everyone happy. Make sure to ask him about the story of the Inn, quite a tale! After the weekend we felt like one big happy family. This next visit I look forward to taking a paddle on the Hudson in one of Tim's canoes, or kayaks with my girls. Probably not for everyone, but we loved this inn. We stayed for a weekend in February, and really enjoyed living in this charming old mansion. The owner, Tim, is a real treat, and made us feel right at home the minute we arrived. The river views are wonderful, the beds are incredibly comfortable, and the antiques, artwork, and oddities that fill the house were quite a treat. It's the exact opposite of a standard chain motel; so you may miss the good features of that kind of lodging, depending on what's important to you. Since we prefer to stay off the beaten track, this is just our kind of inn. Short walk up the hill to the small town of Tivoli. The train runs along the river, but didn't obscure the view and didn't run at night, so it didn't bother us at all. read more

Tim, the owner, makes you feel at home the moment you walk in, and for my entire stay, he was generous, kind, and truly wanted to give me the best experience possible. If you need tips on where to go, or places to visit, just ask him and he will give you plenty of great ideas/plans. The inn is relaxing, calm, and everyone is extremely welcoming. There are always people to talk with in the downstairs living room and kitchen, yet you can get all the privacy you need in your room. I feel obligated to write a review because it's hard to believe that some of these other reviews are legitimate. We traveled a long long way before arriving at the Suminski Innski, excited to see this "unique" and wonderful place that was so highly reviewed. We were exhausted, and after the first 15 minutes, we decided to stay ONLY because it was unrealistic to find a different pet-friendly room in a reasonable amount of time. So obviously I did not fear for my life nor find the conditions horrible. However, I was pretty uncomfortable. If I was alone, I would have had to leave. The pictures on line may be simply old, but it seems to have fallen in a state of disrepair. We accidentally walked into the downstairs area, which appeared to be another (dirty and messy) residence...I think...it was a bit confusing. No one knew who we were when we arrived or where we were supposed to go. Tim, the owner, was not there. We were then led to a bedroom that was decorated that was reminiscent of a mismatched and thrown-together cheapish antique shop-style, hardly renovated. The bathroom had a hole in the corner, and drippy moldy shower liner, the shower faucet held together with ?plaster casting?, spider webs in corners, water-damaged ceiling, dirt/hair on the floor, a wet/used washcloth in the shower, and a leaking water cooler. I was disgusted. However, the bed linens seemed clean and fresh, thankfully, so we crashed to bed, skipping dinner because we didn't want to leave our room - there are no locks on the doors (!) - and there were seemingly random people hanging out and on the property. They didn't appear to be guests. We asked a couple of guys if they were Tim, but no luck, no Tim. Overnight, there were lots of loud voices (old house, thin walls) and a TRAIN that must come through every hour. I am such a heavy sleeper but between the train and the activity in the house, I was awake pretty regularly. By 3am, the house was quiet (although the trains kept coming), and by 7am, we were gone. I have never left a "bed and breakfast" prior to breakfast...until the Suminski Innski. I felt duped by other reviews and I discounted the negative ones. Bad call. Not a nice place. read more

This is not for everyone. I wouldn't call it a B&B, instead you are renting a room in Tim's house. A winter stay may be quite different than a warm weather stay. The wind was whipping off the Hudson right into our bedroom. The heat just could not keep up with the cold outside. It was uncomfortably cold. I would have sat downstairs but it was not very welcoming... no bulbs in the lamp next to the couch, other rooms were dark with thick drapes covering the windows (trying to keep the cold out). A lot of clutter in rooms. Again, this is really his house - this is the way that he lives, you just rent a bedroom. He has a good heart, giving discounts to teachers, social workers, farmers.. etc Good place to stay as long as you know what you are getting into. read more

I went to Bard College in the 90s so I've known the property and the owner, Tim, for a long time. I've always loved the Innski. So much so that I chose to live there this year! It's a magical house in the perfect location. Tim is one of the nicest, most accommodating and friendliest people you might ever meet. The interior is filled with antiques and art, mingled with a jukebox, family style meals, and Bard students. Yes, what all the reviews said are true: it's not your typical B & B. It can get a bit wild at times (college students live there). You might say things are "outdated," or in need of a touch up. But the best thing about the Innski--and there are so many--is the vibe. The character and atmosphere. You will welcomed into the fold as if everyone there has always known you. You might end up joining a large group for Sunday brunch with music played by bard students. Or, you might end up talking over wine on the porch. All kinds of fascinating people come through here: artists, activists, writers, professors, world travelers, filmmakers, even someone who worked for President Obama! Yes, you will need to be somewhat independent and laid back because although everyone is very friendly, no one is going to wait on you hand and foot. You are a guest, but you're also an equal. You become one of the family, of you choose to. For some, this is unnerving. But for most people who stay here (and I've seen dozens upon dozens), it is so much more than a place to stay. It's a place you want to return to and will never forget. In a word: magical. read more

All the reviews before are true, the good ones and the bad ones. This is a beautiful house, Tim is a charming host, the view is exceptional, the pancakes are great. The art work on the wall and the furniture fabulous. BUT, you have to like the idea of staying in a dirty student filled house. Bard students board there and who knows how many of their friends they bring over. It makes for a lively atmosphere, which comes with dirty bathrooms, messy bedrooms (mine looked as if I had chased the boarder away, and his junk was still everywhere), sinks that do not drain, abandoned food and bottles. Tim is a nice guy but he needs to hire a house cleaner and manage the students if he wants this to deserve its Bed and Breakfast qualification. Luckily, I did not find bedbugs nor fleas in my bed, but waking up in front of the Catskills while the moon was setting and the sun rising, may not be enough for me to decide and go there again. read more
