Bed but no breakfast…read more We stayed in colonial Kingston for a conference and planned on staying for 3 nights, however we soon realized how terrible a host Bel, the innkeeper was. Upon arrival Bel assumed we drove to Kingston. I'm not sure why this assumption was made as there is a train station in the neighboring town which takes you directly to Manhattan. Rather than giving us the room we agreed upon via telephone, she put us in a creepy room not attached to the same building: actually it which was several blocks away from the main inn. Because we had no car, she squeezed us into her filthy pick-up truck and dropped us off and rushed out. No mention of what time and where breakfast was served. We were not provided any breakfast the morning after our first night's stay and she did not answer her phone around 7:00 a.m. when we wondered about this. This was confusing as the inn is marketed as a "Bed and Breakfast". We found our own breakfast and went on with our day. When we returned to our room in the evening, our room was not made. It was shocking as this is standard practice among the hotel industry regardless of whether you stay at a lower end BnB or at a high-end hotel. By then we were disgusted at how unprofessional she was and thus we told her we would only stay 2 nights (over 24 hours notice). By the second morning we called her inquiring about breakfast a second time. She simply replied by saying "well I can feed you if you want". How unprofessional and unwelcoming. Why run an inn if you do not want to welcome your guests? Although we gave her over 24 hours notice of our departure (again, the standard in the hotel industry) Bel still unjustly charged us for the third unused night. She also failed to give us our receipt, and we had to ask her 5 times for it. Only 3 days post-departure did we receive the receipt. After reviewing my banking, she had actually already charged the room prior to check-in. I would recommend avoiding this place at all costs.

Coming from Boston, I arrived to this beautiful Victorian with a huge lovely porch which is very tastefully decorated. The whole house is clean, smells amazing great decor, and Bel cooks one of the loveliest breakfasts. Omelette, coffee, juice, and granola/fruit/yogurt, turkey bacon. A++++ hostess! My room had a king poster board bed and one of the comfiest mattresses I've ever slept on. I can't say more good things about this place. But if you want a nice place to hang your hat, where you make a friend in the end Bels inn is where it's at. Excellent service, she's knowledgable about the town and places to go. Hudson itself has great shops and impressive restaurants, but the breakfast at the Inn (pastries, granola, yogurt- all homemade- and fresh pressed juices) is also not to be missed. The owners are thoughtful and attentive, but give the guests plenty of space. It really does feel like going to a second home- but one with much nicer art, furnishings and food!

Our stay was wonderful and something she remembered with fondness for (sadly) the rest of her life. The handmade breakfasts felt to us like they were made exclusively for us and all were excellent. The suggestions for visiting the area homes of Frederick Church and Norman Rockwell was especially welcome to me as an artist as were a couple of other highlights of the trip. The Inn itself was immaculate, well appointed and felt period correct. I wish I had luggage large enough to take the purloin the Jacobean chest from my room and smuggle it back to Texas. If I lived in NYC, which I am glad I don't, I would figure out a way to spend many weekends here. I have traveled extensively through all 50 states in the last 50 years, stayed in cheap hotels and spectacular resorts so I think I know a thing or two about quality and The Inn at 34 is at the top of my list. I acknowledge that satisfaction is a relative thing depending on two things, the facility and you. I can only state that I give The Inn at 34 five very large stars. Given only five stars to choose from I cannot recommend it any higher.

She goes above any expectations to deliver the most in-season, organic, thoughtful and delicious fare--executed at the highest level of craft. The house has a convenient, central location which makes everything easy, but the block is still evolving. Her taste is exquisite and she has access to wonderful furniture and art which makes the house feel like a special place. Some rooms are ground level, and ours faced the street, but street noise was not an issue. Definitely check it out--especially if you are passionate about food.

My boyfriend and I spent the weekend here for our anniversary, figured a nice quiet 'country' escape from NYC/Long Island was up our alley. We couldn't have chosen a better place - even despite the rainy/misty/over cast weather. We arrived late on Friday - I called ahead and Mary let me know we're welcome to stroll in at any time. She gave us tips for finding the place so late at night and let us know she left all the lights on in our Eco Cottage so we'd have no trouble finding it. Once we pulled in the driveway, we walked around the main house to find the cottage ready for our arrival - and with fresh cookies to boot! From what Mary has told us, the Eco Cottage is fairly new - I honestly didn't find many images online except for on their blog. But it was the perfect size for two, had a sink, hot plate/tea kettle thing for hot water/coffee, old school radio, blow dryer, fan, AC, heater, and place to hang up and store clothing. The bathroom had an odor free composting toilet and shower (with walls made of chalk boards from a school across the river!). Also handmade soap and eco friendly shampoo and conditioner. Each morning we had a delicious, hearty breakfast prepared with fresh eggs/produce/etc. straight from their farm. On Saturday, Mary asked if we had plans for the day (which honestly due to the weather, all of my initial thoughts went out the window) and then suggested several things in the area we should check out. Ended up going to nearby Chatham for their October Feast and finished the day at the Hudson-Chatham Winery with a wine tasting. For dinner, we went to Wm Farmer and Sons in Hudson, due to their specialty in mixology (highly recommend), however another couple this weekend suggested Local 111, 5 minutes away in Philmont. Sunday morning we went to go see the pig, chickens and cows on property, practically next to the house, and met Mary's two dogs Cree and Mr. Shivers - super friendly, small, adorable. Enjoyed another amazing breakfast, packed up our things, and headed out. For anyone looking for a true, home away from home experience - I highly recommend Thyme in the Country. Mary was a fantastic host, our room was perfect, the whole weekend was peaceful and quaint. Really looking forward to coming back in warmer weather to make use of their pool! Note: there is no refrigerator in the Eco Cottage, we had purchased cheese while in Chatham - asked Mary and she had no problem putting our cheese in the fridge in the main house for us.

BTW parking was easy, they do have alternate side parking, but you can walk everywhere in town . Thanks Carolyn! The house is historic and has tons of charm and character. The real highlight was Barry. He's accommodating and friendly. I stayed in the queen room for one night and definitely recommend. There is absolutely no other place with better value. As seen in all other reviews, Barry could not be a better host. He gave us detailed recommendations on everything we asked for, and even called a bar, Helsinki, to check if there were any tables left as this place has minimal standing room (only he knew this as he is the expert on everything in town). Then, again we booked last-minute train tickets back home and gave him just 20 minutes notice. Barry insisted on making us breakfast-to-go and driving us to the train station there even though we had time to walk. In just 5 minutes, Barry made us the most savory yet simple sandwich (which was the topic of conversation for part of the train ride back.) His breakfast was the best meal we had during our entire weekend in Hudson - 100% fact. Eating breakfast outside on the porch was one of my favorite parts of the entire trip. Location is walking distance from the best shopping and food in Hudson, as well as Amtrak. If anyone else is looking, this is the only place I'd recommend.
