I was craving a chopped steak smothered with mushroom and onion gravy mashed potatoes and some green beans and I called several places and looked in YELP to see if any had something like that but no one really did, so I was in the north central El Paso so I decided to go up Dyer and go to the New Clock Diner and maybe get a steak and potatoes etc instead but when I walked in the door their new Dinner combo specials greeted me at the door and of course a ground round steak with brown gravy and mushrooms and onions was o e of the choices! With mashed potatoes and veggie medley, and soup and iced tea for just $12.95! Well JACKPOT! I ordered and this soup came first it was a chickeny flavored tomato broth with tortilla strips and melty white cheese. The broth was WAAAAY to salty. But I liked the concept. It had no veggies or any meaning it. So I ate out the chips and cheese and I would have liked to enjoy that broth but it was so so salty I just could not. When my plate came it was a nice spiced grilled ground round Pattie covered in hot brown gravy with thin sliced onions and small thin sliced fresh mushrooms. Homemade real mashed potatoes, and veggies mix of corn, carrots, peas, and green beans. If it had a dinner roll, it would have been dinner at my house growing up any night of the week. It was so good, the veggies could have used some butter on them. The gravy was great on the meat and potatoes. Sorry I didn't get a pic of that plate, but I was so hungry I just dug in and by the time I thought of a pic, it was half way gone. The clock inside isn't winning any beauty contests. It's still same as it's always been. I think maybe I'd set all the clocks to the correct time or the correct time somewhere and make sure they all worked if possible or had good batteries. Be great if the coco clocks, if any, went off every hour. Bring some more character to the old place, and favorite of many. Come get dinner some after noon or late afternoon. It's a great deal... there were only 2-3 other tables when I got there and when I left no one was there . So you can definitely come get a good cup of Joe and some good food in the afternoon, it's not just for breakfast, which it IS FAMOUS FOR. read more

We were seated right away in a previously closed section of this northeast El Paso breakfast cafe. That's not to say you can't get a variety of menu items but to me it's where you go for breakfast. As we're close to the Army base some of the items have received GI nicknames as was the case with biscuits and gravy (SOS on the menu!). Came to New Clock Restaurant for lunch with my husband. He had previously visited their establishment with his co-workers and said their food was good so I was down to try them out as well! They definitely give off that old diner type of vibe. We must have arrived at a non-peak time because there was no one there. But I'm not complaining since we were seated right away. Service was decent. Our waitress came around to get our order but was pretty much non-existent other than that. I ordered the combo #2 which came with a taco, enchilada and Chile relleno. They also brought out free chips and salsa! I didn't really expect much from them, I'll say the salsa definitely tasted like it was from a jar and the chips were cold. But I didn't mind since it was free anyways. As for the meal, I was a bit disappointed. I've never had Chile relleno before so I don't know if my expectations were off but it didn't taste too good. The whole plate kind of lacked in flavor. It could have benefited from a bit of salt. Everything was, for the most part, bland. I had to add the salsa onto my dish to get some flavor into it. I do realize that maybe they don't specialize in Mexican cuisine and I should have just ordered a breakfast item. The first time I was here, I had a large bowl of Menudo. The Menudo came with all the trimmings and was the best Menudo that I have had and I've had a lot in many different states. Today I had a small bowl of Menudo and pork chops steak and eggs. It came with hash browns, tortillas and refried beans. The tender pork chop was seasoned to perfection. I wiped my plate clean with the tortillas. I washed it all down with endless coffee and took a large iced tea to go. In budget eating is a plus+. The service was fast and friendly, we ordered our drink's first and the chips and salsa soon followed. I'm all about home cooking and diner food so when I saw this place on Yelp it really caught my eye. Went for breakfast with some guys from work. Now I'm of the belief that you have to be good to stand out above the rest when it comes to breakfast but you have to really suck to screw it up too bad. I'm sorry cause these are some nice folks, but my western omelette was two eggs with plain Kraft American cheese laid over it! They had no fruit at all and just plain white bread for toast. I should say that this is Mexican fair even for breakfast so they did offer refried beans and that kind of thing but honestly, the food needs work. The reason why I'm leaving a 1 star review is for the service. The food is excellent when I stopped by with my dad to eat breakfast today. The server by the name of "Marisela" who was assigned to our table should know if you work in a customer service environment you should be able to treat others well and not ignore what they request. If you have problems at home YOU LEAVE THE PROBLEMS AT HOME and not in the work place. I understand that it gets busy and I used to work in a food serving environment as well but you're taught to make time for any request when serving. We requested some salsa, ketchup and flour tortillas, but she never brought them and never checked on us if we needed anything else. My dad requested to refill our coffee and she completely ignored him and turned the other way. As sketch as the location might be, out on Dyer street, this old establishment has been here since before I joined the Army. And that was a long, long time ago. Back when I first arrived in El Paso, this was a super popular spot for Warrant Officers to all meet up for breakfast about once a month. For us Soldiers as well. It was always fun getting the squad together and having breakfast here. Think Denny's, but more "homely". Same type of fair, breakfast foods, same concept, just not a chain restaurant and a little more home style. Nothing fancy about this place, and it looks just as old as it is, but there's something about the Waffle House meets Denny's meets El Paso feel to the place and food that just does it for me. I am after all, a big fan of breakfast foods. Why is it named "New Clock"? I've never really known. Is there an Old Clock? Is there just a Clock? Maybe we will never know. And maybe that's for the best. Also, one thing in particular to note, the prices here are great. Like seriously. You can be rich, or broke. A PVT in the Army, or a retired old Korean War vet. All are welcome here and all can afford the food here. Good food too. It'll fill ya up. So go brave the adventurous area that is Dyer street (during hours of daylight of course), and give it a shot. Being so close to the Mexican border meant that I had to try the local Mexican fare. I was suggested the New Clock restaurant by a local and it was much more than I expected. Yes, it's a classic old diner, but the menu was so vast. It contained everything you could possibly want from a classic American diner as well as a Mexican restaurant. I usually can't finish a combo meal platter, but it was so delicious that I actually devoured it. The chili relleno and the cheese enchilada were just perfect! My only complaint would be the guacamole taco, which contained huge slices of avocado, but it was not guacamole. It was easily fixed by adding their fresh salsa, however. The service was attentive and yes, there were lots of clocks. I'm sure it's a very popular spot due to the food as well as their affordable prices. Would highly recommend. read more

Hidden northeast gem. It's actually a northeast staple which after 20 years of living here I just found my way to it. The outside is not appealing and the furniture is dated but that has zero impact on the food. They have an extensive menu, and daily specials. I like me some specials. Their coffee was strong and the service was superb. My coffee cup was never low or cold. I was told our server was also a manager and goodness she was on it! You can tell this is where the locals go. I've recently moved here from Michigan, we are used to $4-$6 breakfast specials. So, we found the breakfast prices here in El Paso absolutely exorbitant!! So, with that being said, thank goodness for New Clock! They have plenty of options for everyone. A mix of American & Mexican choices with fair prices. They have friendly costumer service yet some of their staff don't speak much English. As previously stated their food is delicious yet it takes them a while to serve. I have been wanting to come back to this restaurant for sometime now. A friend took me here about three years ago. I had heard they have a $2.99 breakfast. But when I went in they had so many wonderful other delicious dishes that I skipped the $2.99 breakfast. I ordered a green chili burrito that was marvelous and chili con quest that was so full of vegetables it was more than a dip. I took another burrito home that was machaca. It was so good I wished I had purchase another one. It is not close to where I usually dine out, but I will make it a point to eat there again soon. Two thumbs up! I was craving chilaquiles the other day, and I didn't feel like driving to the other side of town (anything in El Paso is on the otherside when you're from NE). I decided to hit up a place I hadn't been to for years, The Clock. This place has been around for ages, and it has that look to it. Decor has....you guessed it, clocks everywhere. I was worried as I was driving Dyer and I didn't see cars, but once I got to the parking lot, the place was full. Good sign, especially if you've seen by recent experiences with empty restaurants. I guess full restaurants aren't going to necessarily result in positivity either. I know it was crowded, but I wish I could get the attention of my server. I literally had to keep flagging her over to order, to get coffee, refill, chips, everything. I even asked a question about one of the ingredients as I was about to order, she didn't know so got another waitress to answer for me (beans are veg friendly) and then waited awhile before coming back to take my order. I got my salsa in the beginning, but I got the tostadas with the check. I ordered chilaquiles and a chile relleno burrito, the latter is my go to tester of if I will like the restaurant. Burrito first: I did eat it, but the chile had the taste like it was starting to go. there's almost a vinegary quality to it. There was a decent amount of cheese, but the burrito was definitely overpriced at $2.99. When I got the rest of my order, I ate the beans, eggs and hasbrowns (the hasbrowns were definitely my cup of tea...I could've just had those and been happy), but I didn't eat the chilaquiles. Why? Because they weren't chilaquiles, they were enchiladas. I had a bit of an argument with the waitress about getting them replaced. She didn't want to help me out since I ate the rest of the plate. I told her, I was asking for a complete meal do over, just take the enchiladas and give me what I asked for. Finally, after "talking to someone", I got a side plate of chilaquiles. They were pretty good, but I prefer them crunchier. These were more soft and I'd say not worth the aggravation to get them. Would I go again? Probably, for coffee and hashbrowns and maybe some pancakes, but not for the things I ordered/didn't order. read more
