This was our first time getting food (carryout) from here and it was awesome!! Nice big portions, lots of fresh veggies that were steamed perfectly and it was tender white meat chicken! This was our first visit to this restaurant for carryout. The prices are reasonably priced and entrees are served in large portions. We ordered Happy Family (mixed vegetables with shrimp, beef, and chicken) for $11.50, Sesame Chicken for $11.50, and Honey Walnut Shrimp for $13.95. When you spend $25 or more, you get a free appetizer of 2 egg rolls or 10 fried wontons. Rice was cooked soft. Happy Family and Honey Walnut Shrimp were our favorite entrees and would order them again. However, the Sesame Chicken was slightly chewy and stringy. But it was better than other Chinese restaurants which overcooked the chicken that was hard and dry. I can't say this was great Chinese food it was at best adequate seemed like it didn't have a lot of flavor. The shrimp lo mein did have a lot of shrimp in it, but lacked vegetables and flavor really. The hot and sour soup was hot and spicy but not sour. it definitely needs some workand the egg drop soup pretty much taste like nothing. We had heard from my cousin that it's her trusted, good restaurant to go! I had the BEST time there last night with some friends. Every single food on their menu was just amazing and enjoyable, The service was attentive and friendly. The sweet Chinese lady at the front desk has amazing hospitality, making us feel welcomed as the ambiance was warm and inviting. Their food selection was excellent with reasonable pricing. I'm glad they also make really quality vegetarian food! We didn't need to wait for more than 10 minutes to taste our delicious meal, very satisfying! Stopped into this quiet little place for lunch. Staff was friendly and gracious. The menu has all the items one would expect. The lunch specials were well priced. I had the beef and broccoli which came with a choice of soup and a choice of rice. The hot and sour soup was outstanding. The rice was good as was the beef and broccoli, although the latter was only good. The beef wasn't particularly flavorful. All in all a pleasant lunch. I recently moved into the area and was grateful to find a Chinese restaurant for carry out. I like to buy a variety of items each time and eat them over several days. My first visit to New Canton I ordered the Singapore-style Mei Fun. It's a spicy, curry noodle dish with the usual types of meat for a Chinese combo dish: chicken, pork, and shrimp. While flavorful, it lacked the usual curry intensity I've come to enjoy with this dish. The egg rolls were done crispy just the way I like them. My second visit, I ordered egg rolls, seschuan wontons, combo fried rice and spicy Thai beef. I was flabbergasted to open the wonton container and find my spicy wontons in...GRAVY. I have eaten spicy or Seschuan wontons in a lot of places and they have always been prepared In a hot oil sauce. And they're typically in a delicate dough shell. These seemed more like pierogies, lots of dough, light on the filling, and the aforementioned gravy. The egg rolls weren't as crisp this time, not a big deal. The spicy Thai beef had lots of mixed vegetables, still with a bit of crispness (cool!) and a good amount of beef throughout. What it lacked, though, was much flavor or spice. There was nothing in the dish to indicate it was a Thai dish compared to a simple stir fry of the ingredients. The combo fried rice was decent, if not a little overcooked. Based on my two visits, I still have hope that New Canton can be an alternative to driving across the Bay Bridge to get my fix of Chinese food. Not impressed, especially the dumplings that I found terribly doughy. A friend recently wanted to have Chinese and we were in that shopping center so we went again. Wow! We have had carry out from here, and it was very, very average. The Egg Foo Young was mushy. We were encouraged to come and have dinner in the dining room, so we thought, OK, we'll give it a try. The servers were friendly. It appeared that they were doing a lot of carry out. We had Buddha Delight (vegetarian) and a dish with sizzle steak. The tofu in the Buddha Delight was way overcooked and stringy, and there was an abundance of it. The side of brown rice was visibly dried out. The sizzle steak might have been called, "mystery meat," and it was tough and had not taste. Had a spring roll and Wonton Soup, which was typical fare, no complaints. The worst thing was that one of the servers took a large rug from the kitchen entry, and shook it at the back of the restaurant!!! We were in the last booth, and believe me, dirt was flying. One of our party said, "We're eating over here!" The server mumbled something and he said, "The dirt is flying all over." No response. When our main server came to clear, she said, "Oh, you don't like the tofu," and I replied, "No." No response from her. She just cleared the table and brought fortune cookies and almond cookies. It's unfortunate that so many people have let their poor experience with the old ownership defer them from trying it again. I will say that this food is closer to traditional, true Chinese cuisine than it is to "American-ized" Chinese food. It's still not true traditional Chinese, but it's also not the same heavy, sticky, sweet sauces on heavily battered meats. They have a very small lunch buffet and it's excellent. The food is always very fresh. They don't have 101 options but what they do have tastes very good, is hot and they make sure there is enough available. And it doesn't all taste the same.
