We ordered two carry out combination dinners. A #10, General Tso's Chicken and a # 13 Chicken Lo Mein, which comes with chicken fried rice and egg rolls. Also ordered an egg drop soup. The food was good, and hot, however, the egg rolls are the cabbage style, not the preferred sprout egg rolls. The carry out employee was friendly and helpful and the area was clean. Today was the third time we've ordered lunch from New Asian Star. The price is average. I like that they give you options - egg roll, bean sprout egg roll, or spring roll. We all prefer the bean sprout egg roll. You also have choice of rice, fried rice, or noodles. Some are an up charge and it tells you up front. The General Tsos chicken is good and not spicy at all. My son likes the sesame chicken. The orange chicken is very strong orange, but good. I ordered a side of the plain lo mein to try. It tasted fine, but priced a little high for what it was. The first time I ordered, I got some egg drop soup but I didn't love it. I decided to give it another try. It's a little bland, but that is fixed with a little salt and the fried wonton strips. We ordered carry out tonight. We ordered the crab Rangoon, steamed tofu pad Thai and a general Tso chicken for one order and an almond chicken and an egg foo young for the other order. Order totals to around $57. The woman told me to call before coming in to make sure my order is ready so I won't have to wait outside. It's set up like Fort Knox. They won't let you inside at all, only in the doorway with a window in between. Room for one person at a time. That's why they let one customer in at a time and ask you call to check on your order before picking it up. They pass the food to you by the doorway. The crab Rangoon tastes crispy and good, mostly all cream no crab. Wonton is nice, thin and crispy. Sauce is okay. The mixed veggies and steamed tofu tastes more like a red curry sauce instead and it's creamy too. It's still tasty. It wasn't the pad Thai my husband was expecting, but it still liked it. I tasted it and was okay. The noodles were all balled up for me. My general tso chicken has lots of big chunks of chicken and the sauce is okay, maybe a bit too sweet and syrupy for me. First time trying after going to multiple in my area and being let down. Sesame dinner is very good, egg rolls are very good, egg drop soup is very good, a lot of food for what you pay, fresh roll was very good. Sweet and sour sauce is decent, could be sweeter and tangier, tasted like a thick broth with a hint of spices but I've had worse. The wait time was long but I'd say worth it. Getting food by carry out is the new reality, so it's great to find a place with really good food. What I love about New Asian Star is that they execute the classic Chinese dishes - broccoli chicken and sesame chicken - flawlessly while also adding cool things you don't normally get from a Chinese restaurant: Pho, a hearty Vietnamese soup. The breaded chicken in the sesame chicken had a crispness and a glaze to the exterior, unlike the soggy breading at some places. I thought the fried rice was robust and flavorful, but my wife didn't love the onions in the rice. The chicken in the broccoli chicken was cooked properly and had a sauce on it that went well with white rice. The brisket pho was quite a thing to get as a carry out, since there are so many parts to it. An entire carry out container had most of it: the lean brisket, rice noodles, peppers, scallions. Another container had a massive branch of Thai basil, plus bean sprouts, and scallions. The broth was in a third, massive container. I can see why this can serve as a main course (for more than one person). One thing I also love is the massive amount of fried wontons with any soup order. The hot and sour soup is neither hot nor sour, but it's hearty. Curbside service was a little slow, but that's a testament to how good the place is. The word is out.It's worth the wait. read more

I began coming here before the new owner(s) took over. To say the least, I'm very grateful they did. This is my favorite Asian fusion restaurant in the Tri-County area. I've never had a bad meal here. The various chicken combinations are always on point, as are the vermicelli bowls. The egg drop soup was watered down nothing thick in there it was like chicken broth,a lot of water and egg whites. Did not taste good. The egg roll was ok the dipping sauce was something you buy at the grocery store. The won ton soup also watery the won ton were soggy. Now the good the almond chicken was the best I've ever had not like most places to much breading not enough chicken. The chicken out did the breading and the gravy was a whole different taste it wasn't brown wallpaper paste like some places. It was a little thinner but not watery. The chicken pad Thai was creamy, super fishy tasting and the eggs were scrambled . I ordered two chicken pad Thais and they both ended up in the trash. I was surprised by the crispy chicken rolls as I thought they were going to be like the ones wrapped in the rice rolls but they were in tortillas. Very disappointed because it was like deep fried chicken tender but tasted fishy and was unsatisfying, and I love some breaded chicken tenders usually. The crab Rangoon were tasty but very sweet. I really want to like this place and, as long as I don't stray into unfamiliar territory, New Asian Star is pretty good. Unfortunately, for traditional American-Chinese staples like almond boneless chicken, crab rangoon, egg rolls, etc., the food just isn't up to par. The saving grace for New Asian Star is that they do Pho dishes really well. The broths are delicious, the protein, vegetables, and herb combinations are really simple and effective, and the price is right for a good bowl of Pho any time of year. So, while American-Chinese are a dime a dozen in this area, and I wouldn't recommend New Asian Star being your first choice for this type of cuisine, keep it high on your Rolodex for Pho-inspired dishes. read more

Best Chinese food in the immediate area. Someone needs to let them know that the pandemic is over and that people like to sit down at a restaurant and eat. Kids at the front who do nothing but hand you your food get real snarky when you don't leave a tip. You don't get a tip for handing me food thru a makeshift window. You get a tip when you provide a nice place for my family to eat, take our order, provide some drinks, bring out the food on a plate, and then do the dishes. I don't leave a tip for simply handing me a bag of food, just like nobody leaves a tip at the McDonalds counter. No need to get an attitude. Provide an actual service to get a tip. Hint: open the dining area! THE PANDEMIC IS OVER!! I don't always want carry-out. Also, if you want the crackers that automatically come with the Wonton soup at literally every other Chinese restaurant, you have to mention that and pay extra for them. New Asian Star has good service you will be greeted at the door with a smile they are always very helpful with your menu questions and they actually even make suggestions based on what you say to them so that tells me they're listening. Thank you New Asian Star for coming into the Shores. They are actually a Vietnamese restaurant although they do have quite a few selections that are found in typical Chinese restaurants they are quick prompt and the restaurant is very clean the wonton soup is nothing too exciting other than the wontons but those are tender and delicious I don't think you'll be disappointed if you give the New Asian Star I try. Updating the review, given the new ownership. I have been here numerous times since the new ownership change, but realised I had not updated my review. My review focuses on their pho, since that is my absolute favourite. Since my original review, several other restaurants closer to me now offer pho. While this is a good thing, ( such the comfort food, should be enjoyed by more people), I still maintain that this is my East Side favourite pho. The ones on Hall road are OK, decent even, but I prefer to drive here. Another update for COVID, they are carry out only - which is fine by me. But, carry out can prove to become tricky 2itj pho. I will say, they do an excellent job separating all the ingredients. I'm about 20 minutes from here, so when I get home I reheat the broth and then add the additional ingredients. I did have to ask specifically for a hot oil. Personally, I prefer just lime and hot oil for seasoning. It doesn't need much more from a flavour profile perspective. So because of the service and cleanliness for a mom and pop Asian restaurant, this place deserves 4 stars. The owners are Vietnamese and super nice. But the food is really a 3 star deal. The Vietnamese beef pho is actually pretty good and on par with the ones in Madison heights. The summer rolls are fresh with a delightful and salty peanut/tamarind sauce (maybe a little too salty) But the Chinese food, this is when it all falls apart. I was so excited to see a chef special of beef chow fun! Could this be one of my fav Cantonese chinese wide flat noodle dishes? Do I no longer have to hike to Madison heights or fly to Chicago/Toronto? But to my disappointment, it truly doesn't make the cut. The beef cut was pho cuts and the noodles were pho noodles vs wide noodles. I don't think many people order this dish, and he just threw it together. If you order Chinese, I would stick to the American Chinese fare. I mean how do you mess up fried chicken with some sweet and sour sauce? Now, the only thing that bothers me is they charge for tea. No traditional Asian place besides Japanese or pf chang's charges for tea. And in general, the Vietnamese food is slightly higher than places in Madison heights. But- when it is cold like yesterday and today, I will go back for some pho. Next time, I think I will try the other Vietnamese dishes. read more

Went here for the first time, I enjoyed the General Tso's Chicken I had, the Pad Thai the person I had it with didn't particularly like it. The menu is amazing, very diverse in its offerings. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The prices were normal for a good amount of food (much more than most places for the same prices). I would highly recommend this place, it's definitely worth a try. Second time-I came back to try Pho (chicken Pho) for the first time. It is as good as people make it out to be. Granted I have no point of reference, but good is good no matter what. I recommend this place once again after my 2nd time. read more

The food is great. Thats where my two stars come from. We have never had an issue with the taste of the food, ever. The service is a mess. They have a child answering the phone, if you order online they straight up will just not make it/see it, and it can take an hour + to get your food. We tried the fried tofu for appetizer and then beef pho, vegetarian pho, and the kung pao chicken combo for dinner. All 3 were amazing! We loved the fresh basil, lime, and sprouts that came on the side of the pho. The chicken came with rice, which I didn't really care for, an egg roll, which was amazing(crispy on the outside and good flavor on the inside) and either egg drop soup or wonton soup. We got the egg drop and it was as good as any other. All the food was very fresh and our server was a very fun and helpful guy. Spicy Basil Chicken combination plate (#37) is excellent. Crisp fried chicken is medium heat with pungent basil leaves throughout, and the sweet and tangy mango sauce on the side is the perfect offset flavor to dip this in. I chose white rice, but you have the standard option of fried rice as well. I chose the wonton soup, and the broth is excellent and the wontons cooked perfectly (I don't really think the crispy noodles on the side are necessary). Basil Chicken is very good as well, the sauce is tasty. The Hot and Sour Soup is pretty good from here as well, I definitely enjoy it. The Chicken Pho is a great choice as well. However, wow was this so flavorful! It was very aromatic and bursting with so much flavor! Almost like an elixir of sorts! I got it takeout so it was separated from the noodles which I appreciated! I also purchased the fresh rolls! Again, spot on with flavor! The Pho I tried, I believe it was the Pho Bac Deit! Yes, I tried all the meats! Interesting flavor and I'm glad I tried something extremely new to me! I also got the Boba! Which I know it's a bit pricey but SO worth trying it! The passion fruit boba was fresh, cold, and fruity! Loved it! The overall inside of the restaurant was tidy up to date and nice! It was a bit hard to spot from the direction I was coming from. The staff was friendly and helpful! PHO IS 5 STARS! This review is for the Pho primarily. I know it doesn't encompass the entire menu they're offering, but it was 5 stars none the less. I've eaten at many of the Madison Heights Vietnamese places, and the broth here was above and beyond. Menu offerings are far narrower in the Vietnamese category, as well as the Thai food. Withholding a star as the Pad Ped and Summer Rolls were 'ok', and haven't tried much else. - V2 $3, Egg Roll (see Spring Roll): Stuffed full of the flavored pork, very long and you get 2. Better bang for buck than most places, and a step ahead on flavor. Served with traditional garlic fish sauce. - V3 $4, Summer Rolls: Quality roll, on par with some other Vietnamese establishments, but little light on vermicelli noodle inside so overall smaller. Obligatory peanut sauce with it. - V10 $9, Pho Dac Biet: Mouth watering Pho with rare sliced beef, well done brisket, tendon, tripe, and meat balls. WOW was the development of broth way ahead of anything I had before. It was both complex, but simple in its flavor profile. The gentleman who waited on us seemed to be part owner / leader. Was very helpful with questions, and at the end we talked Pho. He explained how they select their bones for the stock, and season to taste rather than just 'measure and mass produce'. It really showed. I was taking a friend out for her bday, she never had pho and sampled mine. She loved the broth. I had her try it virgin first, then with hosin and sriracha. This place can and probably will be a five star place sooner than later. Husband and I came here on a whim since we were visiting on the east side. Pho has become one of those meals where we are always pining for it, but once we go somewhere that's just mediocre, we get discouraged to try it again at a different spot. I'm happy to say that Minh Chau pleasantly delivered on all counts when it came to eating pho. Not only was the broth deep and developed in flavor, it was served steaming hot with boat loads of meats, brisket, tendon, and tripe. Oh and we can't forget the noodles - soooooo much! I'd say it was easily half a package of the standard rice noodles you can buy, or even more than that. I recommend that if your appetite is on the smaller side, or you're just not in the mood to eat a lot, GET ONE BOWL and split it. At $9.25 for the pho dac biet, it is more than enough and you can taste all the different cuts of meat. There's no way around it. :) One added thing is that the cilantro is minced just enough without being butchered. Ahhh, love cilantro. :) The summer rolls ($4) as they call it, are soft, springy, and the thai basil is the magic ingredient here. If you really like them, get one order for yourself. I like that the shrimp and pork still have their flavor; indicating the freshness. The peanut sauce was a tad too salty for my liking, but not overwhelmingly so. Service was attentive and the young ladies are so sweet. We had a Vietnamese coffee that was okay, but just too sweet. We probably won't get that again. Bathrooms and the general condition of the restaurant are very clean too. We also received free music entertainment, per next door's pub. I'd advise that if you're looking for a quiet place to dine, that might just ruin it for you. I'm not sure if it's like that normally, or if it's just because it's the weekend close to Halloween. In any case, that won't keep me from coming back, and the pho and summer rolls I can vouch for, and they are definitely worth a try. Pho is finally in effect on the east side! Today's lunch at Minh Chan was a refreshing delight. For one, this place is emaculate and very nice decor- lots of large photos of south East Asian island monoliths placed around the dinning area. Very sharp! For lunch I had the beef pho. Superb choice and it tasted very clean with more than the average amount of vermicelli noodles. Great flavor. I was very full afterwards... "BuuRRP!" The real shinning star was Mr. Sam. I think he is part owner or a family member who serves/manages there. Wow, What a super nice guy! A Professional and just a nice guy. Great service too. I only gave 3 stars as I have not tried the other Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese main course dishes. I'm sure it will be very tasty...and my star ranking will be moved up. Just a matter of time.
