Guy comes to house for Free estimate, BREAKS my oven door and BLAMES me - Out $180
We called Mensache for a free estimate to move a gas line behind our stove (in preparation for new appliances). We initially offered to email him detailed photos but Mensashe insisted that he needed to come over and examine everything in person. He said the photos were no good for an estimate. But when he arrived, he changed his tune and said that the pictures would do, and he didn't need to look behind the stove after all.
In hindsight, we should have sent him the pictures and prevented the nightmare that unfolded.
We were very specific with our ask and had detailed instructions from the manufacturer printed with exactly what we needed. It didn't matter. Menashache stood in our kitchen talking in circles about some creative things he could do with the gas line- things we didn't ask him to do, like building a box in the wall to hold a limited about of power because as he told my wife, "You would never be using all four burners at the same time." What?? She asked him if this would cost more? He said that it wouldn't cost any more money, and then he added slyly, that it would cost a little more money, but didn't say the amount.
Suddenly, he decided it was important to look behind the stove and he grabbed the oven door handle and tried to lift the stove with all his might. I said, "Whoa, don't lift the stove by the door!" As he struggled with the weight of the oven, he told me it was okay to do this, and then the door came right off its hinges. He literally yanked the door off its hinges. And it happened fast. Then we spent ten minutes trying to re-attach the door to no avail because, like I witnessed, he broke the hinges. Busted it. Caput. It's an oven with no door.
Then he got down on all fours with the door on our wood floors and tried to jam his tape measure against the hinges to get them to move. The bottoms of his dirty sneakers started to rub against our new leather chair, and I decided it was time for this fella to leave before things escalated into chaos and further damage. This man was a bull in a china shop. Even worse, he now claims our oven door was already broken. Umm, no it wasn't. I cooked salmon in the oven just last night. The oven door worked fine, and I've never had an issue with it ever.
Feeling uncomfortable with him in our home, we asked him to leave and he bolted out the door.
Left with a broken oven door, we consulted with a few oven repair companies. It was confirmed (third party) that our oven door was ripped off its hinges- it was broken on the inside of the oven frame- by him forcing the entire oven up off the floor by its door. So, instead of getting his advertised free estimate, we got a $180 bill.
Let me also say, that we tried to address this issue with Menashashe before being forced to write this review. He told my wife that he did me a favor because it's not his job to move ovens. And he texted "Yes, I didn't fix it back to place because again, that is not my job, but that doesn't mean that I caused any damage".
Let me be clear: Mensashe walked into our kitchen, broke the oven door off its hinges and left saying it was our fault. Unless you like your stuff broken and you like to pay to fix things you didn't break, my advice is not to invite this guy into your home. I mean it, the soonest you should hire this guy is never. read more
