Small portions and high proces doesn't feel like a winning strategy. The buzzer system is a 90's throwback back but not in a goodway. Servers wander around looking for the correct table...no one wants to see their food offered to several other people before it makes its way to your table. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Despite sitting indoors, the aggressive flies were so annoying and it just made us want to give up on the mediocre meal.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] While the bar service was excellent and the design was really cool, the drinks were nothing special and once again the high prices were not justified. There hasn't been any service yet to tip! No fountain drinks... just $5 a bottle sodas! Order taker rang up juice and ice tea for $9, we asked for fountain drinks. When we asked about our sodas a manager had to get involved. He opened the " ticket" back up ,deducted the 2 drinks , added 2 bottles and charged us another dollar!!! Probably should redo the menu, not worth the money , just make it basic Tex-Mex and serve french fries for kids! No need to smoke everything on the menu . This place is pretty new yet the ambiance is amazing, allowing families to come out and enjoy drinks with food while children get to play in the kids area. Service was beyond one of the best experiences we've ever had ( Kay- best waitress anyone can have.. super attentive and super sweet). Food is okay, they do not have many options for the average Texan ( highly recommend they work on their menu adding red wine options, loaded baked potatoes with choice of meat, chopped BBQ sandwich meals that include food already on their menu and a home made potato chip nachos including cheese, choice or meat with all the sides). Gave Neon Armadillo another try, this time with my family and was still disappointed unfortunately. Servers are great and friendly. This time, they had someone check on our table after ordering (maybe since it was a larger group?) to make sure our orders went through correctly. Despite this, 3 of the items that were ordered failed to make it to our table, and we had to ask the servers to correct the issue. VERY FRUSTRATING since I thought after a month in operation, they would have worked out these kinks. Food again is not as good as it can be, which is really frustrating because Neon Armadillo literally checks every other box. It's an AWESOME hang out spot for the community, open seating and relaxed place to let your kids run around and the adults can watch games and socialize all in one place. Everything we got was a super small portion size for what you're paying, and the flavors for most items are still off (mushrooms, guacamole, and don't get me started on the chips and salsa!). And just like my first time, the brisket was completely sold out again, so I have yet to try it. We did get to try the 1/2 chicken which was tasty but not much better than other restaurants for the price. The Farmacy Burger was also super overpriced for the size and there is no option to have a side of fries. Another consideration, if you have any vegetarian in your group as I did, there is a severe lack of options some they use beef tallow instead of seed oils in nearly everything! At my first visit, we were disappointed that the burgers didn't have an option to swap out for a gluten free bun if you have a gluten allergy. I really enjoyed this spot and will be coming back as soon as I can. In fact, as soon as I can in the winter months before it gets crazy popular in the summer. It's that kind of place - it is going to draw a lot of folks because it is a cool place, well designed with awesome food and drinks. As I run this review, remember - I loved it! These are just some pointers that I wish I knew. Being 1/2 way between Wimberley & San Marcos will allow it to advertise as being in the Wimberley Valley (tourists' target) but also draw from San Marcos (larger population). This place made me think that Austin had finally spread to Wimberley. It just has the Austin vibe displanted to Wimberley. I think the main thing that peeps will have a hard time with is that it has nothing to do with what you think of as the process of a "normal" restaurant. Think of it as a high class Chipotle's. You go to a counter to order, you get a buzzer, you get your food later. The only thing that you don't have to do is buss your table. This will turn off a lot of folks and is jamming up their flow (there are employees purely there to educate folks re: how it works), but eventually enough people will understand it that it will start to flow. But this place is here to stay. They've already started innovating (the food ready buzzers) so I have great optimism that this place will knock it out of the park. To help you with the flow: look for the bar. As soon as you go inside look for a menu holder on the wall and grab one. As soon as you know what you want, walk up to one of the cash registers at the bar and make an order and they will give you a buzzer. If you have cocktails/alcohol, wait for your drinks. Once that's clear, go to the right and get your non-alcoholic beverages, utensils, water, napkins etc. Then go find a seat. When it buzzes, someone will bring you your food. EXACTLY like Chipotles! But it has a more upscale vibe. So the place is just fantastically styled. We went inside in December because we thought it would be too cool outside. Most of the smart people were outside because the heaters made it just fantastic. We had lovely seats inside and really, really enjoyed the styling. The drinks were fantastic. I had the Neon Armadillo Margarita and they know their Margarita's. My date had the Sangria and thought the same. We also got the guacamole and chips. Just like Chipotle the chips came in a lunch bag. After futzing with that a while, we just went to the "utensil/drink bar" and got a take out container. It worked MUCH better for retrieving chips from a paper bag for the stellar guacamole. For the entree I had the Neon Wedge Salad with Smoked Brisket. I enjoyed the heck out of it and it was ginormous. Wasn't craft brisket by any measure, but it was tasty just the same. The poblano ranch was a perfect accompaniment. My date went with the Farmacy Bowl with Chicken. The chicken was off the hook good. Better than my Brisket. Only down side is that she was set back by the heat of the jalapeno's. It was advertised so that's on her. She's not a chili head so it was kind of hard to eat. Pro-tip: ask if it can be done without them if you aren't a chilihead. Overall, loved the place. For sides we shared the charro, beans, potato salad and cucumber salad. The cucumber salad was the best! It had a wonderful Smokey flavor from the pepita. They do have salads, but I opted for the cheese quesadilla...which they advertised as cooked in beef tallow, so I was warned. I could taste that beefy flavor which was unappealing for me; But I'm sure a meat-eater would be fine & even enjoy the beefy taste. My husband had the salad with chicken & he liked it. The service was quick & good. The things I wish would be improved are the following: they did serve in single-serve plastics, glass bottles & compostable dishware. I hope they are actually recycling & composting since otherwise, that's a lot of trash or room for improvement/an opportunity for reusable plastic baskets or trays. While most people probably love the setting, I was concerned about the trees. They've limbed up the old oaks to allow for more light/views to a not-so-healthy crown to trunk ratio. They've also built trendy beds at the entranceway that are covered in decorative dark rock, but theyve buried the trunks of the trees deeply. These need to be dug out again to expose the root flares. The trees are already suckering displaying the stress as they slowly suffocate. This will likely be ignored, but this business has been built around the trees that provide the base for that backyard. I recommend hiring a certified arborist who helps with a tree care plan & a planting plan if you want this spot to last for future decades. read more

I would have come here to write much the same thing, but I'll add my two cents still. I've enjoyed everything, but my favorite is the chicken. Chicken is not what I usually get at BBQ joints, but there is SO flavorful and juicy. It's also on the bone, which is normally a No for me, because I get a little weird when it comes to meat, but it's just too good not to eat, bones or no. The prices aren't cheap, and the servings aren't large, so come prepared to pay for what you get, especially if you have more than just two or three people, but I do think what you get is worth it. I will also say, take some of the lower reviews with a grain of salt, because it's a newer restaurant, that's getting popular fast, and they are working some kinks out. Running out of beef tallow seems to be the chief issue. We've been twice and they were pretty startling differences in the two trips. First we went on a Friday night, and basically no one else there. We found a table easy, we got incredible service, and it was all sunshine and rainbows. The next time was a Saturday and it was PACKED. I think everyone in a 40 mile radius must have decided to eat at the Neon Armadillo that night. We still found a table pretty easy, and the food and service was still good, but they were sold out of a lot of things and were obviously stressed. So I recommend going on an off night for your first visit to really enjoy it. Finally got a chance to stop in and try the place. The previous tenant was one of our favorite local haunts, and we waited patiently for someone new to come in. I like the open seating and ordering concept, and the selection of food and beverage. We had the brisket, chips and queso, and the burger. The brisket was good, not fatty and tasty. The queso was quite good, and taro chips very crisp. The burger was spicy, which I love but warning to those who don't like heat. Only have medium rare and well done as options was a bit disappointing, I don't mind medium rare but not a fan of bloody buns so I opted for the well done, which was fine. We sat outdoors, surrounded by big screen TVs and the stars. Great outdoor area, plenty of play area with kids on the trampoline and shooting hoops. This place is great little get away if you want to get your bbq on. It's a very scenic and great drive getting there with scenic views a hilly, windy roads. You are greeted by someone at the entrance which is all open & family oriented. I suggest ordering a little bit of everything, like lamb carnitas, brisket, pulled pork, & the chicken. You can get from a 1/3lb of each to 5lbs if you wanted. It comes w/your choice of tortillas. Get the avocado pico app for a snack and slap it on your tacos. Lots of staff so food was fast and they were very attentive. The beer selection was good with mainly Texas beers and of course local Austin and dripping springs breweries represented. I went on Wednesday for the grand opening and again last night, and while the atmosphere continues to impress, the food has been a bit hit or miss. The queso has a tangy flavor that didn't quite land, so both the nachos and the white queso appetizer were underwhelming. On the other hand, the guacamole and salsa were excellent. Our group of six rated the food overall around a 6.5 to 7 out of 10. Here's what we ordered: * Lime chicken wings (Wednesday): 9/10 -- really delicious! * Kids hotdog: Reported as dry. * Tri-tip barbecue: Solid 7/10. * Nachos: Better on Wednesday with brisket; the chicken version last night was around a 6.5. * Kids burger: Perfect -- 10/10! * Horchata cocktail: Not the best on the palate. * Neon Rocks margarita: Fantastic -- they nailed this one. Overall, this place has incredible potential. The interior and kids' area are top-notch, and the overall vibe is awesome. But people are really going to want the food to match that same level. This is one of the best restaurants in the entire Texas Hill Country. Not only is the food next level, but their commitment to using the highest quality ingredients is unparalleled! Regenerative grass fed meats, heirloom beans, in house tortillas, and no seed oils. This is the ONLY barbecue I have ever eaten and felt immediately energized and nourished (normally I feel slow and heavy eating conventional barbecue). The staff is very attentive and knowledgeable!
