I came for the shrimp tacos and I ended up wandering around and checking out other vendors. I am so happy that I ran into Nelly's tacos. When we visited, it rained a little on this day but that didn't stop us from enjoying some grindz. I have been on the hunt for really great tacos on the island. I had bought two tacos and they were two too little so after a few bites, I went back and ordered six more to share with my family who was visiting from out of town. The person running the food truck was so pleasant and kind. I enjoyed my first experience. I am already dreaming of my next bite and looking forward to my next 45 minute drive to Kahuku just for these tacos. I've gotta say the best food on this island is on wheels! read more

I really wanted to like this place ... I was soooo close to going to a shrimp truck when visiting this area on the North Shore, but something inside me said "try the one Mexican food truck, looks good!" I started reading Yelp reviews while waiting for my food and I wish I read them sooner. The food definitely lacked some flavor for me. I ordered the crispy tacos which were really just flaunted and I asked for the spicy sauce on them-- definitely could have used more hot sauce because the chicken was kind of bland. The rice and beans weren't that much better... I ate the food because I was really hungry, but like I said, I kind of wish I went elsewhere. I'm pretty sure there were just 2 older ladies working the truck and they had at least 3 orders before mine, and I ended up waiting nearly 35 mins for my plate. Everyone else in my party who got food elsewhere waited about 5 mins and were done eating by the time I got my food. I've had much faster taco shops serve me with more flavor... I feel a bit mean saying that, but just trying to be honest. Next time I will take the advice I was given and go to one of the other spots in this local food truck area on The North Shore! read more

Been to Oahu 3 times now... and these are the best by far. As a Mexican who grew up in LA, I can confirm these are as authentic as it gets on the island. I will say it doesn't look pretty but that's just it, it's authentic and feels like ur in the ranch in Mexico just enjoying some tacos. Just cruising the island on a Saturday afternoon and originally going for Giovanni's garlic shrimp while in line, we saw someone with this huge plate of carne asada tacos and it looked absolutely ono. First off, I love Mexican food-tacos, burritos, Mexican rice, refried beans, menudo, to name a few. In my opinion it counts most on how you marinate/flavor your meats. 5 stars is for flavor and authenticity. Tacos $3 per piece Rice and beans $5 Total for my lunch: $14 I've never been a big fan of Mexican chicken dishes. Chicken was my least favorite. 2 thumbs up for everything else I ordered. What's different here than other Mexican food joints in Hawaii? Detail. The way they prepared their tortilla-it had a slight burnt crisp to the edge of it which gave extra flavoring, it wasn't dry. Filling is not much but you have the authenticity of the steak and pork. You have a choice of salsa- personally I don't take anything beyond mild, also Comes with standard topping: cilantro, onion, white crumbled cheese (not American shredded cheese). Rice and beans- honestly the best in flavor in Hawaii, and rice is NOT mushy. My lunch consisted of 3 tacos and an order of rice and beans. I'll have to go again to try their burritos. Will check for consistency in flavor on my next visit. They offer other dishes not on the menu, but you will need to call and order ahead so they can prepare it, especially menudo. Food is made to order so expect at least minimum 10 minute wait. The cook is from Lindo Michoacan. They both speak espanol. Can't get any more authentic than this! read more

So if I were still in California, I'd probably rate Nelly's 3 stars. But for being in Hawaii, Nelly's deserves 4 stars. It's a simple meal done well. Quite possibly... no wait... They aren't actually a food truck. The couple speaks spanish so that's a good sign. The wife hand makes the tortillas right in front of you - another good sign. They have homemade salsas, too. At first we ordered 2 tacos: steak and pork (carnitas). $4 each. You have the option of adding papas (potatoes), rice, beans, onion, cilantro and salsa. We asked for our tacos with all the fixin's. We sat down and we were both quite pleased with the portion size and the taste. These aren't lil corn tortillas with a spoonful of meat and a squirt of salsa. These are sizable tacos (as they should be for $4 each!). We liked the tacos so much that we decided to skip all the neighboring shrimp trucks and random other food trucks to try a chicken burrito. For an $8 burrito, it's a good heavy portion. What was interesting was that in the to-go container, they lay 2 tortillas down to cover the length of the container. They pour in all the food as if it's a huge taco. And no, they don't roll your burrito into a burrito. Strange, right? A burrito here is actually a huge ass taco! Hey - I like the stuffing so I'm not complaining. But if you're looking for something to hold upright in your hand...you won't be able to do that at Nelly's. The best part of the burrito was eating the middle portion where the tortillas overlapped. It was extra chewy and delicious. I really do love the handmade, fresh tortillas. She originally wanted pork but really wanted the fried tacos, so she settled, and they did not disappoint. The order comes with three giant rolled and fried tacos, refried beans, rice, and salsa. I'm from New York, have lived in California for many years, and have made multiple trips to Mexico. I have never tasted better Mexican food ANYWHERE ELSE. The deliciousness of authentic Mexican cuisine that Nelly and Benito can craft in a truck is beyond words. I live in kahuku and it is also my favorite place to eat on pretty much the whole north shore and windward side. They are open till 8 which is awesome considering only McDonald's stays open till then. Update came back again Wednesday and $2 dollar tacos!!! I mean you just can't go wrong! Went there for dinner and were the only people there due to covid. Place is cute and the people were nice. The food was ok, but the portions size of filling in all of there tacos was really lacking. Went to Nelly's at 11 since that's the time listed on Google and their Yelp page and they weren't open, called and said they opened at 11:30. We called again at 11:30 and they said they weren't there yet so we couldn't order. Once we ordered and went to pick up we found out they only accepted cash and had to go to a machine to get cash, when my daughter went up to the counter to pay they said it was 24$ when the menu we looked at says the burritos were 5$ each, they were incredibly rude and had poor service and told us to never come back. read more

Such an amazingly nice lady! We were lost and she came out of her shop to the highway to find us and guide us to her place! We had the chile relleno, steak burrito and carne asada. The chile relleno was the tops, plenty of cheese and it really tasted like the Anaheim chile. Yum. Steak burrito was also very good. The carne asada was good too, just the others were better. On the salsa, we got medium since it was our first time. Our advice - don't be timid, we will go for hot next time. The real star here is the tortillas - clearly handmade perfection.
