This shrimp truck surprised me, it was actually a bit better than the big famous one around the corner! Super garlicky, buttery, and seriously tasty. Yummy all the way. [[HIGHLIGHT]]They also had some nearby seating and we also saw some chickens hanging out.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Leo and David serving me up a plate of Garlic Shrimp and while I wait I'm offered a free cup of plantation iced tea! Nice! The shrimps are very tasty and the Iced tea delicious! This isn't my first time eating here, and it's always been a good meal. Thanks again

Okay I have seen this from the street since forever and have finally tried it today. SO WORTH THE STOP. 1. They are away from the action area, quite literally between the two so you would think they would have more traction but it was super slow. But it's probably because there is really no hype about it! But they should hype it! 2. I got the Lobster dog with chips. YUM!!!! It's simple but satisfying. Salty, crunchy, soft, and warm, it was great! 3. The person taking my order was super friendly. I have never had a lobster dog and never heard of it. I have been curious about it and he said "it's made from real lobster rolled In beer batter." Yes. I will take that! Now, was it mind blowing? No. But it was delicious. People eat with their eyes first. If the owners put more work in marketing HULA ULA THE LOBSTER: Home of the lobster dog. Instead of "Lobster dog," it would Identify WHO they are and WHAT they do. 4. [[HIGHLIGHT]]They have a cute photo op area for selfies! Great idea! Maybe make one of Hula Ula the lobster![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] They have a prime location. Make it work for you. Bottom line: Food is good. Worth the stop. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Location is great. Make it more appealing![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Service was good but could have been more enthusiastic about what they do! If you are in the north shore, don't let the empty area and no lines sway you from trying this! It's worth it!

Decided to go to the food trucks in Kahuku after our beach day. Hadn't been to Hula Ula before so we picked up a couple of spicy ahi poke bowls, kalua pork plate and a plate of fish tacos. It was pretty busy midday, but service was friendly and the wait for our food wasn't too bad considering how many people were there. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We took some selfies by their cute little Aloha floral backdrop.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]There are a few benches with umbrellas, but we decided to take our food over to the Kahuku Beer Garden nearby to enjoy some brews with our lunch.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The poke bowls were good, the fish tacos were tasty and the kalua pork hit the spot after spending time at the beach.

Not so lobster corndog and horrible tasting tea
    D J.

Nice folks but they are not putting out the best quality. I'm happy that we were able to support a local small business but extremely disappointed that we wasted money on this. The lobster corndog was mostly cornmeal breading. I did not taste any lobster. It would have been better with chucks of lobster pieces and lightly breaded. The pork nachos were a joke! The tortillas were not made in house. Doesn't take much time to make your own. And they added waaaaay too much salsa on top of the pork. Nicely prepared pork doesn't need much added. The iced tea flavored with pineapple juice tasted like it was made with sewer water....just horrible, not sweet at all. It didn't even taste like unsweetened iced tea....Very weird! The fish tacos went in the trash. Flour tortillas are almost always a bad idea. I really hate writing reviews like this but I have to be honest. This food truck has potential but the owners need to put in more effort. They're just sucking tourist in with their marketing of the lobster corndog.

Saw this spot and decided to pull over, gratefully surprised and had the best lobster dog!! Michael and David were great, highly recommend this place, no wonder it's a locals choice!

It's become famous in my book.

Walked around to see all the options available at the various food trucks and came back here because I was intrigued by the thought of a lobster dog. Walked up to order and was greeted by a friendly gentleman that took my order and told me that was the most popular choice. I told him I felt I had to try it. He gave me a ticket with my number on it and said he'd call my number when it was ready. [[HIGHLIGHT]]They have several picnic tables available so I grabbed a seat while I waited. Nice umbrellas to shield you from the sun.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I didn't wait long before hearing #24 called. I went up and grabbed my Lobster Dog. I have to say it looked good enough it was hard not to dig right in before taking pics. Even have an Aloha photo prop for your picture taking fun. I will say I was ecstatic about my selection. This was delicious. Just the right ratio of lobster to breading. Perfectly crisped. The sauce that comes on it is the perfect pairing. I don't think I'll ever be able to eat a Lobster Roll again after trying this gem! $14 per dog. That helped me stick to one otherwise I may have been tempted to get another one or two. lol If you want to try something a bit different and you like fried items and lobster then I highly recommend giving the Lobster Dog a try.

I hate giving 3 stars to local spots buuuut it just wasn't that great for the price... Did a day trip around Oahu, was hungry 5 hours into our trip and found this food truck yard. We stopped for a quick snack. It wasn't a cheap snack! Had the "famous" lobster dog, yet there was no dog in it, just lobster in fried bread. Lobster was good but I was expecting a hot dog in it. My husband had the fried cheese dog, it came with potato chips, he said it was ok. We also shared pork nachos.. ehh. It got the job done in the sense that we were staring and it held us off for another 2 hours, but our snack cost us also $40+ and we did not order a drink.. do with this as you wish..

My first time trying lobster dog, mildly disappointed. It was essentially a corn dog but the lobster didn't have the flavor to complement. So it tasted a lot like just a corn dog with more corn than dog. This alone would be fine but it was too expensive for the portion size. $14 for a lobster dog not worth it

    Lora C.

Being a local, it's a fun day just to drive around island and pretend tourist. Eat at some random food truck out on kahuku... This truck is known for their famous lobster dog.... My verdict on this $14 lobster dog... NOT WORTH IT. -too much breading -not lobster, it looked and tasted like imitation crab meat I get times are hard but don't lie to people... I cannot speak for the other items on the menu but specifically that item my review was based on... highly disappointing.

Not worth the money. Nachos had plenty of Pork but it was dry, very little cheese and even less salsa, shame because the chips were nice. Fish/Ahi tacos were cold and tough. Red sauce had nice spice but did not bring dish together. Tortillas were cold, dry and brittle. Tables are right next to the bee ridden trash cans.

Many people head to the North Shore to surf...and they should. You should also head there for the food trucks. On this visit I stopped by Hula Ula! This is the only place you can get a Lobster Dog on the North Shore. With that being said it was just okay...that is the lobster dog. It was a lot of bread and not enough lobster. EVERYTHING else was "So Ono" (Good to eat)! The pineapple smoothie is a must, and the garlic shrimp are delicious. They are shell on so you will get your hands dirty. Bail on the napkins and do exactly the opposite of what your grandma would want and lick your fingers. Thank me later on that tip. Im not big on Kyla Pig AT ALL, I'll pass 99% of the time but here it is delicious...or say it with me..."So Ono"! I highly recommend Hula Ula, It is service with a smile and their family makes you feel like family. Enjoy!!!

Lobster is fake. The lobster dog was dipped in waffle mix. The meat is imitation crab or fish mix. The texture is not lobster.

Enough visits that this is no longer about catching them on a bad afternoon, ordering the wrong thing or failing to understand what the place is supposed to be. I've tried the different shrimp, stood in the lines, eaten at the tables, navigated the parking, brought people here and returned because, for a very long time, Giovanni's was simply one of those places you went when you were on this side of the island. At some point, repetition becomes evidence. The truck itself has become an artifact. Covered in signatures, battered by time, photographed millions of times. There was probably a period when all of that felt charming. Now it mostly feels tired. There is a difference between patina and neglect and the surrounding experience has increasingly crossed that line for me. Flies, crowded tables, overflowing activity, rough parking, heat, trash nearby. You can romanticize rustic only so far before rustic starts asking for a pressure washer. Then there is the service, which has consistently been the hardest part for me to understand. I don't need anyone performing hospitality like they're auditioning for a resort commercial, but basic warmth costs nothing. Too often the interaction here feels impatient and transactional, as though the customer is somehow inconveniencing the operation by showing up to buy the food. After enough visits, you stop calling that an off day. And then there is the plate. The shrimp itself is actually the least offensive part. It is generally cooked reasonably well. Tender enough, rarely destroyed and when you get a good batch you can understand why this formula became so popular. Everything around it drags it down. The rice has repeatedly been soft, clumped and bordering on mushy. I am annoyingly particular about rice, but rice is not some decorative substance placed beneath the main event. It matters. When half the plate is rice, screwing it up is not a minor detail. The garlic is abundant, certainly, but abundance and care are different things. It often arrives more like a wet mass of processed garlic than the fragrance and texture you get from properly chopped fresh cloves. Add the butter and oil and you certainly get intensity, but after several bites the whole thing becomes heavy rather than interesting. The little salad on the side generally feels like an afterthought that has been waiting for someone to remember it. And that is ultimately my problem with Giovanni's. The entire experience feels as though its reputation arrived at the destination years before the restaurant did and everyone decided there was no longer much reason to keep improving. People will continue coming. Of course they will. The name is famous, the truck is recognizable, the photographs are practically mandatory and nostalgia is one hell of a business model. I understand it because it worked on me for years. But strip away the mythology and ask a brutally simple question: If this exact plate came from an unknown truck with no history, no signatures and no reputation, would you still wait in line for it? I wouldn't. Two stars. The shrimp can still be decent and I have too many memories here to pretend the place means nothing to me. But nostalgia should bring you back to a restaurant. It shouldn't be responsible for making the food taste better. I kept returning because tradition can turn habit into taste. I'm done confusing the two.

We drove up to get there just before noon on a Saturday. It was rainy, so the numbers were a bit light in the area, but there were still thirteen people in line when the truck opened for business. The owner was fun, friendly, and engaging the customers in conversations while prepping the food. There are times when I think some food truck owners take on the role of a short order cook and get annoyed that you don't understand "how" you're supposed to order; that was certainly NOT the case here. You just need to decide if you want a hot or regular sandwich and whether you want bleu cheese or special sauce. We got one hot and one regular, but the chicken is HUGE and two adults can easily share one sandwich. I'm torn, because while we would probably order just one sandwich next time, I also want to support the business and get two. The chicken was as good as everyone told us and had incredible crispy batter. The fries though...those were maybe the best I've ever had. I don't normally love the double cooked style fry, but could live off those and never get tired of them. FYI...we took ours to eat at the Beer Garden about 100 yards to the west and that's a winning combo.

This being my next visit since seeing that episode, I had to try it. What did I order? - Mikes Huli Chicken Plate $17: 4/5 Stars - Chicken is a nice half chicken portion, perfectly juicy, nicely slight char taste. Crispy skin? I got the #9 plate, which is kalua pork, huli chicken, and I got mac salad. The kalua pork meat itself was fine. Not gristly and not too fatty. However, barely any smoke taste to it and was fairly bland. The huli chicken didn't have crispy skin. It seemed lukewarm like it had been cooked a while earlier and was just sitting. The sauce is amazing and I do think it's delicious with the sauce. Rice was just rice. Meh. Even adding shoyu didn't add much flavor to it, to be honest. The mac salad is extremely bland. I don't know if they need to add some acid to the mayonnaise or more salt, but it was pasty and no flavor. I would honestly skip getting the mac salad next time and get regular salad! That's how bad this mac salad was. Two slices of pineapple on the plate were fresh and flavorful. I did enjoy these. Service was okay. I had asked if they still honored kama'aina discount and was told no. That's fine; I understand not all places offer discounts. I don't know when kama'aina discount stopped being offered, but back in the day I used to receive it when asking. I did notice though that two guys who ordered before me got a "mahalo, braddah" in a friendly tone but I got a terse "thanks." Guess haole girls don't get mahalos even if local. It's just uncomfortable when certain people get friendly, effusive mahalos and others get terse thanks, like I didn't want to be serving you food today. Maybe cause it was Mother's Day and they didn't want to be there? Sure didn't feel like 'ohana today. So many flies around, it made eating uncomfortable. A few fly fans on tables but not at the one where I was seated, so it was basically like constantly shooing away flies and trying to take a bite of food super fast before they came back on my food. Probably I should have taken my food away and gone to the beer garden nearby with fewer flies. Meh. I used to really like Mike's but I will stick to Da Bald Guy and Seven Brothers when I visit the sugar mill in the future.
