Drop Dead Deliciousness. Right. HERE. We'd never experienced Cuban food before, and it was well past time....we happened across this place recently and made note as a "MUST-DO" exploration. Yesterday we pulled-up under a shade tree across the street...not knowing the wonderful food that awaited us, but we did have a hunch and it bore out to be trustworthy. We found Nelly's to be very neat and clean, with excellent, EXCELLENT staff and service. The menu was easy to follow for newbies, and after asking the lady at the counter what her favorite was she said MIAMI HEAT....which is where I was leaning, so that's what I ordered. My wife ordered the Cubano, we each ordered a coffee variant (pictured and described) The ifrench fries included with our sandwiches were EXCELLENT. Not the least bit greasy, very lightly salted, and just the right portion- unlike other places that don't quite give you enough of a serving....but not too many, either. In spite of their light color that might indicate otherwise, their texture and doneness were PERFECT. May I say that this is QUAILTY food here....and yes they do bake the bread (which was DELICIOUS) onsite as well. The pork was so good, and not too salty- no "processed food " faire here. BIG WIN. My Miami Heat was warm, but not real spicy, or hot enough to deter my wife from wanting to order it next time...and yet she was very pleased with her Cubano Sandwich. A very good quantity of meat and fillings on the generous and delicious, FRESH roll. Very, VERY good. Coffee? YES, please; and there is a reason Cuban Coffee is so highly praised. We stopped by Nelly's Cuban Cafe hoping to grab a breakfast sandwich, but unfortunately they had already sold out. The gentleman at the counter was very friendly and took the time to recommend a few other options, which I really appreciated. I ended up ordering the BLT. It was packed with bacon and had plenty of filling, but it was a little on the dry side since it didn't have much sauce. Even so, it was still a good sandwich overall. The wait was a bit longer than I expected, though I'm not sure exactly how long. The cafe itself is super cute, and I really loved the atmosphere and vibe. Awful!! We got a steak sandwich that was so bad and with American cheese no mayo or anything on it. It was terrible! We thought it would be grilled and toasty and melted w/good cheese and some kind of good sauce. It was a joke. Are you kidding me almost $20?! I would never pay over $5 for that!! And then I had two empanadas one steak and cheese and that was pretty good and then one ground beef and potato, it was so bad, it was all saucy and just wet and gross! And the pricey coffee my son got was not good either! He just told me throw it away ...​The flan that we took home and tried later was good. So the flan and the steak and cheese empanada were pretty good. But overall just so disappointing, And it was a little bit busy when we were first there but then it really wasn't and we waited so so long for not very much food we ordered,$40 is pretty disappointing to pay for a bad small light lunch!! Loved this place. I read about it on Yelp and had to go. We are passing through in our way to Portland. We had the Tropical Cubano Sandwich and it was spectacular. First customer in @ 11AM to Nelly's Cuban Cafe today. I had been waiting a long time for this place to open with hopes it would have been last October. But the wait has been worth it and now they are open for business. I'm going to be flying high after this Cuban Colada (4 shots of espresso and sugar) with a side of fresh flan. The espresso shots are so creamy with a lucious "head". The housemade flan is very tasty and the consistency is smooth. The caramel topping has a nice brown sugar note and isn't too sweet. It was a perfect side to pair with my coffee drink. I also picked up a couple pork empanadas to have at home. They looked great with a flakey crust. The restaurant itself is charming and even though it looks small from the outside, it's very spacious. It's been a long time since I have felt inclined to yelp, but the Classic Cuban Sandwich at Nelly's had me breaking out my password to share my experience at this restaurant. Nelly's is a no-frills lunch counter setting. The food is prepared quickly, and you can easily get in and out on a standard lunch break. Arrive early because otherwise you may not find seating or may simply have to wait. The servers are friendly and want to help. Now.... the food! I am somewhat a connoisseur of Cuban Sandwiches. I get one everywhere they are served and worked a long time at a restaurant that made a great one. This is hands down the best cuban sandwich I can remember having. The bread was perfect, light, airy, flaky, buttery. The pork was unbelievable, tender, moist but not too moist, flavorful. You can tell they are slow roasting that pork with expertise! I literally had dreams about this Cuban sandwich. I woke up craving leftovers. That brings us to the serving size. Nelly's isn't cheap - $16 for a sandwich at lunch. Ouch. But the sandwich is ENORMOUS and easily fed me for two meals. I'll try to get a picture next time. I was too excited to dig in. Was really excited to try this place out based on the reviews. We ordered 2 sandwiches and fries to go. ( a tropical and a crispy chicken). The bread was good and thicker than I was expecting. The crispy chicken had no flavor or seasonings and was really boring. The tropical was a little bit better but not worth the $16. The worst were the fries. They were very undercooked and lukewarm. Definitely not worth the $42 we only ate 1/2 and tossed the fries. If you like unseasoned sandwiches you will love this place. I'm eating five stars because the food was excellent. The cafe has just opened and is quite evidently working through some logistical problems. The staff were friendly and polite, which is a must. My only gripe is that the special was confusingly not available unless previously reserved? Okay, I can deal with that. Wait, you can't sell me the flan in the display case because it's already been sold? Okay... now I'm a little upset. Keep at it, work out the quirks, and go forth to success. The Cubano was brilliant, with juicy pork. All the traditional fixings on a perfectly toasted slice of pan.
