Wine tasting at a Haunted Mansion!! What! I came here with my family with a group of 11, we had an amazing time, the host was amazing. The entrance was a little odd but once we walked in, it was super cute and welcoming. We walked into a quaint little room in the back and to our surprise, everything was set up. We had 6 flights of wine with individual cheese board pairings. The hostess gave us the history of the mansion and confirmed that it is haunted. We enjoyed the wine and bought a case of wine with a little of everything, the mojo Cali, and the limonello. All very good. At the end of our tasting, there was a power outage! Pretty spooky..... What a great stop to add to your list. Nello and his staff were super friendly, nice pours for tasting at a very reasonable price. They offered $5 off the tasting fee if you purchased a bottle, classy touch to their business. They were hosing a private tasting in another room but accommodated our party of 6 without hesitation. The wines were tasty but the Cali Mojo is a really nice spin on sangria with a ginger beer sass. Definitely look for it and give it a go, you won't be disappointed! read more

I really wanted to like their wines. We got 2 different flights and had 8 wines (2 repeated). The only one I enjoyed was the Port. I've never left most of the tasting behind. Especially since they're small. But we couldn't finish them. Plus the glasses are too small to swirl and let the wine open up. Not a fan. Nice people. Cute store. Lovely view. Visited Nello Olivo on the Carson Road Winter Wine Adventure on Saturday. Plenty of pourers behind the bar for the festival attendees. My first time at this tasting room but I had tried their wines at events in Reno. Large tasting bar. I like all the reds, Grapefather is one of my favorites. Excellent Primitivo. Purchased a case of Drop Dead Red which was just bottled and ready for tasting in 5 months. Looking forward to enjoying this blend. They were serving lasagne for the event, yummy. Sunday our wine tasting crew went to the Placerville tasting room which is small and intimate in a cave under a old mansion. A great experience, so good I joined the wine club. My boyfriend and I came into this place to get a couple glasses of wine, maybe a bottle to share. We walked in, went up to the counter and started looking at the red flight menu. That's all I saw available. I'm more of a white wine drinker. The lady behind the counter carded us immediately and commented on how young I looked. Thanks! Then she left and started talking to someone else. We were very confused as to why she didn't then offer us service? I had questions about which wine she would recommend for me and such! We waited for a bit and I decided to use the restroom since she kept us waiting. When I came back she let me try one of the wines. I asked a question about a different wine and she said she couldn't open that one(I understand), but didn't offer any other info about white wines, etc. I made it pretty clear that I was open to suggestions. She wasn't very helpful and seemed not to care about us in general. We were both put off by our experience. We purchased 2 glasses and sat outside. To top off our experience, my boyfriends Glass had a lipstick stain on it. I wasn't wearing lipstick that day. Lol. We decided not to mention it because we had enough of that lady. I am a huge wino and was so pleasantly surprised at the experience I had here. My boyfriend and I were coming back from apple hill and stuck in traffic, so me being the wine addict that I am, searched for any nearby wineries on my phone. This place popped up as being right off the freeway and seemed like a great way to spend some time till traffic died down. We came in at 4:30 (they close at 5) and were the only ones there. Jim said he had just enough time to do a full tasting for us! I liked so many of the wines and our favorite ended up being the "grapefather" (hope I'm not messing that up.. it's the wine they have that sounds like The Godfather ). I even liked their port so much I ended up buying 3 bottles for myself and friends! The tasting room is so charming. We even got to look in the cellar room and see some wine that had been aging for years! I just loved this place and hope to bring friends back soon. Small, but awesome tasting room with a fine portfolio of Italian varietals. Being the first guests to arrive that day, we were lucky enough to have our tasting done in their private cellar room. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the entire lineup of reds with standouts being the Sangiovese and Barbera. All the wines possessed great balance and every one of them would pair well with a huge variety of foods. And quite honestly, I found the Nello's reds to be a notch above all those I've come across in Lodi and Amador County. Nello Olivio Wines is a cute urban wine cellar tucked under a historic mansion near downtown Placerville. This wine bar is just north of Highway 50 on Bee Street. Parking is shared at the facility with the mansion event center. After a week stuck inside dealing with winter air pollution, I was grateful for a clear albeit windy day to head up to Apple Hill to get out of the city. I made sure to try a few wineries I've never visited. Nello Olivio was just too interesting to pass up. The wine bar is packed into the old cellar and basement of the historic and beautiful Sequoia Mansion. It makes for a unique and cozy environment much like tasting vintages in a friends wine cellar. They offer a large tasting menu with several French and Italian varietals including several blends. The wine was pretty good, but the experience was really great with friendly staff and a packed house looking to have some fun. Access is a bit tight and might be too much for the claustrophobic. Parking can be difficult too, but if you're looking for a funky and unique winery in El Dorado County, you might enjoy Nello Olivio too. read more

Visited Friday, we were the first customers of the day. We had seen great Yelp reviews and a lady working at the toy store in Placerville raved about it. The tasting room is in the cellar of an old mansion. It's really neat inside. The gentleman that served us was very kind and engaging. He showed us the Grape Father video, it was awesome, if you get the chance, ask to see it, if not YouTube it #winewars. He also turned us onto a new Pandora channel, 70s Lite Rock, love it. WINES, let's not forget that's why you go. I opted to skip the Rose but the others in my group loved it so much I went back to try it, it's delicious. I ended up buying a bottle. Nello Olivo stays open until 7 PM for wine tasting (2 hours later than most), so this is an ideal last stop for us when we come in from Reno. On my last two visits, Ivan has been pouring behind the bar and he's just a "cool" guy. He obviously knows his family's wines well and he is very personable and friendly. We were just there this past Saturday and decided it was time to join the Wine Mob. We purchased the "family" level which is four bottles every quarter for $80. Stopped by on a beautiful Friday afternoon on our way up to Tahoe. Nello Olivo is located a quick stop off the freeway. The location is a beautiful mansion that is used currently for private events and weddings. There is a small parking lot on site which we had no problem grabbing a space in. The wine cellar is located beneath the mansion and is a cool and dark place for grabbing some wine. We were warmly greeted and set up with a tasting. We sampled a few whites, reds, and ports. Our server was friendly and attentive and even allowed us to do a few extra pours. They also showed us the wine cave in the back which is used for smaller events. These are some good wines, diverse, quality by a winemaker that has a passion for wine making. Good deals too, and close access off hwy 50. The wine tasting room is in the downstairs portion of a historic house, and has a cave feel to it. The son of the winemaker was running the tasting room the day we came by, and did a good job of promoting the wines, telling us some back story about each one, but bottom line is the wines are good. The ceiling in the tasting room are pretty low. I could see that feeling claustrophobic when it gets cooler and the doors are shut. For our tasting we had to stay standing for the whole bit, I've never experienced something like that but I didn't dislike it. Parking isn't great. It's 10 spots across the street and if you have an event there, I could see that being a problem. However the bathroom and the great room are prefect for cozy weddings. read more

I contacted them literally out of the blue looking for a special gift of wine for special out of state friends who lived further up the road @ ~6,000' to celebrate their 50th !! Anniversary. I was intrigued by the winelist of their own grown and bottled grapes that had so many winning GOLD medals in wide open ie 5,000+ entries wine competitions. I was frankly late but hopeful tho for no good reason because of the winery's already somewhat remote location, but I had the good fortune of picking the right winery !! One of the things that intrigued me was their particular very limited bottling of very rare grapes. Not to be deterred, one of the owners Ivan Olivo stepped right up and personally put together a gift box for our friends of that VERY special wine, THEN added several personal touches incl. a wine glass, opener AND multiple tickets to a special limited access wine event so our friends could take theirs. HE THEN DROVE SOME 40+ MILES THRU A SNOW BLIZZARD TO PERSONALLY DELIVER OUR SO IMPORTANT GIFT to our friends ON TIME !! What a treat !! This is a really cool place, friendly, and very generous with their tastings. I actually had to say "no thank you" to revisiting a taste or two... I bought a Barbara and a Barbara Port. Truthfully I could have easily bought three more bottles - tha Cab and the Primativo were both excellent. Unfortunately, we all got to talking and they forgot to put my wine in the box with my friends. I called them we I got home and they will ship to me, no charge! Meghan was so sweet! Finding this place can be tricky, just look for the Wedgewood Mansion, an old Victorian House/ Building. Really great stop! And for $5 tastings I was able to show my daughter who had never been some different wines. Melissa was amazing she really knows her stuff and some town history. The place is so cute and right off the freeway. We picked up a nice bottle of wine we can share with friends later. I am surely going to check out the other spot they have as well as bring friends back here. The restrooms are upstairs and super nice. There was a wedding going on so it was really looking fancy. This is the second time I've been in and the service has been poor both times. The current "bubbly" server, Megan, was much more interested in speaking to the young, hip couple on the right then taking care of all her patrons. She was noticeably rude to an older man, giving him some serious attitude, told an older woman to be quiet, and was not responsive to us until my dad indicated his empty glass (was after about 10 mins of her fawning over the other couple and ignoring everyone else). I understand when businesses are busy, but we waited for every single pour while Megan chatted up the other "hip" couple. All I have to say is that it's good she's leaving the tasting room for her school. Hopefully she learns some manners. read more

As I walked up the entrance, I realized that I had been here before. Both for dinner & brunch. This time I was here to do some wine tasting. This used to be a restaurant and wedding facility. Now it is a winery & wedding facility only. For a seemingly smaller winery, they have an extensive list of reds to choose from. We were there on a passport weekend, so we had the opportunity to try as many as we wanted. Their 2010 Sangiovese was my favorite, with string berry flavors and just a touch of pepper. They have so many Barberas, how to choose? The Italian chef in me reaches for the '09. They served up some very tasty meatballs when we were there. I'm sure their food is fabulous. read more

Briefly stopped by on our way back from Tahoe. I love Placerville-area wineries. They make affordable and high-quality wines from Italian varietals and are not pretentious at all (usually free standard tastings!) They really remind me (fondly) of my experiences with Finger Lakes wineries. Big fan of the adorable cellar that is home to this tasting room! The property is beautiful and hosts lots of special events ie weddings and receptions. Sangiovese and Barbera was particularly notable! We went here after I shot a wedding here a couple of years ago. The wine was great and Nello was a great host. We ended up coming back for lunch one day and the food was great. We went downstairs in the cellar to taste some of Nello's great wines. Signed up for his wine club and we've been drinking his wine since. We came all the way from foggy San Francisco, after visiting Sonoma and Napa multiple times, and we were very much pleased to discover this great winery. Try the Primitivo, it is excellent. This is a varietal used usually in a blend not as a standalone, but I very much appreciated the depth and taste. The wines were ok except the Cab, it was excellent. The tasting menu listed the Cab for $25 a bottle but we were charged $36 a bottle. When questioned they said, oh the Cab on the tasting menu was 2013 but what you tasted was 2012 and is $36 a bottle.....really, couldn't have told us upfront, instead of after the purchase.
