Loved our tasting here. We went in December and it happened to be Magnum week so we got to taste some of Madrona's special magnum wines that have been aged for about 20-25 years. The winery is tucked in the back of a long kind of winding road near High Hill Ranch past the Christmas tree farm. The vineyard is beautiful and the tasting room/outdoor seating area was so peaceful. You get to choose your own adventure for the tasting options - you choose 2 flights from a list of 4. Each flight is 3 tastings so you get a total of 6 tastings for $15!! Which is amazing. $5 of your tasting fee is applied to a purchase of wine and spoiler alert - we came home with a bottle of their Fiore which was so good. You can choose to taste inside the tasting room or outside on one of the benches under the trees and we opted for outside. It was such a vibe with Christmas music playing in the background too. Our sommelier was so helpful and friendly. It was also nice to scan the QR code on the menu for tasting notes from the winemaker. This has been a favorite winery for its wine and location for many years. It is usually so peaceful. Since we were last here, the tasting process is a little different. When we visited all the tables outside were set up for tasting and staff assisted us outside. We were greeted right away and showed to a table and given menus. We had our dog who loves the trees . Our server told us how it works We chose a couple of tasting options and we also brought some food to enjoy with our wine. We enjoyed the tasting and bought a bottle to have with the lunch. For all my folks pulling into the farm, keep driving! We made the mistake of thinking this was near all of the building for the ranch and it was an additional 10 minute walk from the property. So if you can, keep driving all the way down so you can actually park at the winery rather than end up walking all the way there. We made that mistake and ended up walking back in the dark lol. But we still had a great time here. Prices are great and it in life's 2 flights for the price of one. We had a friend that was new to wine so a friend and I split the flight with her so she can sample a few. The service was great and loved that the staff stopped to actually talk to you for a bit rather than just taking our order and walking away. Great vibes and incredible service- every server was super knowledgeable and went into great detail with the types of wine in each flight, helping me learn a lot about wine. For example, I learned about tannin which is derived from the type of grape and adds bitterness and complexity. So informative! The flights are a great price too, only $15, and you choose 2 types from 4 menu options. I tried 2 different flights (reds and whites) for a total of 6 different wines! Can't be beat really. Fantastic family vineyard and winery in the Apple Hill area, tucked right behind High Hill Ranch - definitely worth a stop and visit if you're in the area! Such a personalized, family-run feel - they truly take pride in all of their wines. Predominantly B2C instead of B2B, they really focus on the individuals who come by their vineyard and become members of their wine club and beyond. The wines themselves are so delicate and delicious - we had a tasting, which is 2 preset flights since they are trying to give you a linear experience - definitely recommended. Prices are very reasonable. We purchased a wonderful bottle to take home as well. The staff is fantastic and knowledgeable, passionate about their winery, and very friendly. Plenty of seating both indoors and outdoors on picnic benches - we were able to sneak in before the October/November rush, but imagine that when that happens it'll be crazy busy and packed! Madrona is so close to highway 50, if you're passing by, you might as well stop in. The tasting room has outdoor seating under the shade of big trees. They don't have much for food but you can grab a wedge of cheese and some crackers to soak up the wine you'll be tasting. I wish I could give this place more stars. Our first issue arose by just trying to get to the winery. Having to fight through high hill and not having the best signage. You can get lost! The vines are close and very picture perfect. You do get to try 6 different wines. Bad part is they might forget your order and some of your party. They did apologize but it was weird. Madrona was a unique and relaxed tasting experience with a concentration on Rhône and Bordeaux varietals. The owner and his wife are lovely and the wines are high quality. Tasting is in a beautiful forested area in front of the tasting room with good table spacing. Pairing was vegetarian with freshly made sweet potato, corn and black bean soft tacos. Had a really nice experience at their wine tasting room. The wines were pretty good, especially their reds, the port, and the not too sweet Riesling. What was even better was the explanation of the wine making process from the owner Paul. It enhanced the experience with his down to earth talk about the wine making process as well as the challenges the wineries in the region had to go through because of the smoke from last year's devastating Caldor Fire. We did learn something about their sister winery, Rucksack Cellars. Since it is an outdoor tasting winery, they are only open from May 1st through December. Paul also explained how they were able to develop that vineyard differently than some of their other properties. All in all, a great experience. read more

Cat Not Included. Bummer. It's a win-win when Jenny P. gets to wine taste and gets snuggles from a wine kitty at the same time. On my second trip here a few weekends ago I was on a Christmas mission for my Mom, who loves dessert wines. Madrona's muscat, Fiore, was what I was after, and lucky us, we stumbled upon their annual Christmas in the Cellar event! I've now had two radically different experiences here, first the laidback afternoon with my wine gals as a guest of my yelp wife Jackie F., who is a member here, and this last time for the busy, cheery, festive party. Christmas in the Cellar did take place partially in the tasting room and the cellar below, which was a lovely set up. I adored the elderly gentlemen who poured our first tastings in the tasting room, and Toothless was also perched on his wine boxes waiting for pets from us. He nearly climbed onto my shoulder on this visit. Maybe he is a dragon after all and not a kitty. Sadly his friend Theo, the other black winery cat Madrona had (that shares a name with my furry nephew), passed away recently. :-( I'm glad I got to meet him on my first visit here. After the preliminary tasting we were invited down to the cellar to do a few food pairings and visit a handful of local vendors as we sipped and munched. All of this was complimentary, too! There were additional items for purchase of course, but the ability to attend and all tastings were free. Madrona staff had barrel aged Cabernet available for tastings, as well. So many treats! It was a great time. I recommend Madrona for their hospitality, their dessert wines, their prices, and the fact they're still offering complimentary tastings up in the Apple Hill area when so many have started to charge. We had a candlelit tasting due to the power outage but it actually made it that much more of an intimate experience. For $5 or purchase or one of their bottles you get to sample 8 different wines all of which was provided with rich history and breakdowns from the owners. They described all the different processes that go into each of the wines it was really wonderful to take in some knowledge while sampling each one. I came out with a bottle of the Fiore yum! Wonderful tasting experience at Madrona today! Located in Apple hill, easy to find plenty of parking. We made reservations and although we were early got a table right away. Due to Covid all tasting is outside. Tables are all away from each other and covered with paper and cleaned after each tasting. Tables are reserved for an hour so we set our lunch up and we were ready to taste! For $10 we received two flights of 3 wines each. $5 was taken off if we bought wine, which we all did, so normally it's $15 to taste but they are generous pours. The winemaker came around with a special priced wine and gave us extra tastes! Their winery dog was a nice boy named Sprocket. He didn't beg or bark but just wandered around to say hello. We were under the trees and not rushed enjoying our wine and lunch. When we were ready to purchase wine we received a 20% discount for Nevada day which most wineries in Amador/ El dorado county do for Nevadans which makes for a great once a year treat! Madrona Vineyard had plenty of parking mid week. We waited a bit to get helped but that's okay, only one server on property. We had to sit outside even when restrictions were supposedly lifted. They have wooden picnic benches and a nice woodsy outdoor area. Not fancy, just like camping. We were able to choose 2 sets of flights on the list that had 3 wines on each flight, so 6 tastings. The winery dog Sprocket was simply adorable and visited us from time to time. Wines weren't like I remembered them years back. Nothing spectacular and tastings weren't waived. 15.00 per person. I had fond memories of this place and I might give them another try in a year or two, but I think the wines went a bit downhill. Whilst visiting friends in Sacramento, they took us to this quaint area called Apple Hills. It's the off season so not really too busy. But I understand that during the season it's packed. There was an average amount of parking. Getting there was well marked. There was a good selection of wine to taste. The dry white reissuing was a surprise. We bought a bottle. Lynn, our server was polite and knowledgeable. There is a picnic area out side. We had lunch that we brought with us with a bottle of their wine. They graciously gave us cold bottle. A fantastic vineyard and winery with beautiful views, and even better wine! This vineyard is located close to Apple Hill, and offers a various selection of delicious wines. We attended their Portopia Food and Wine event, where we were offered some tasty samples of Portuguese-style cuisine that paired incredibly well with their Port wine. The tastings were generously poured, and the history behind every bottle left us mesmerized. We definitely purchased a bottle or two on our visit, and we hope to venture the winery during the warmer season! The winery offers a few wine tasting events that are certainly worth attending, whether it be your first time here at the Madrona Vineyards, or your 80th time. Visited Apple Hill on 9-23-2017, to enjoy the weather and apple donuts. We picked up a map of the area from the fudge shop and seen that this winery was close by. Walking over took about 10 mins from where we were at. Not bad at all. Recently I have been more interested in wine and want to try more, so the free wine tasting was right up my ally. Kathleen (at Madrona Vineyards) had great customer service and was very helpful. 5 star customer service!! My favorite wine was the 2016 Chardonnay-Hillside $20.00 per bottle. Kathleen explained that it was aged in oak and made in a new French style. My least favorite was the port because I don't like sweet wine but I can see how some people would like it with desert. We purchased 4 bottles of various types of wine from this vineyard. My Selection from Favorite to least favorite 1) 2016 Chardonnay - Hillside 20.00 per bottle 2) 2014 Zinfandel - Signature 26.00 per bottle 3) 2014 Malbec - Signature 28.00 per bottle 4) El Tinto Lot 36 12.00 per bottle There was several people in on the wine tasting. Each person for the wine tasting had their own specialist, describing and educating them in the different white and reds. I really enjoyed this winery. You get a really good amount of tastings and they are showing some wines I have never heard of before; such as the Nebbiolo which was one of my favorites. They seem to have employees that have been there a long time and really know their wines well. As someone that frequents Napa often I found this to be a breath of fresh air, in the sense of old Napa. No tasting fee, delicious, affordable wines. They are doing some great wines out here and it's a beautiful property. A couple of my other faves were the Dry Riesling and what I believed is called new world port. If you love good wines check them out. read more

The setting is beautifully visual. The picnic tables are great for really enjoying the wines while overlooking the vineyard they came from. 1. They have TWO winery cats. Winery cats mean one thing. Cat cuddles. Okay, maybe it also means they're rodent free (or rodent controlled), but whatever, cat cuddles! 2. They have a huge tasting menu. Like, really, we get ALL that?! Not sure if that's a standard thing but even if it's only like that a few weekends or so, I'm not complaining. 3. Great variety of estate grown wine. Oooohhhh such good wine. Zinfandel does really well out here, so I naturally loved it. They also have two varietals of Riesling that are amazing. Went here after watching it on the news for 4th of July weekend and it was the best experience we had. I'm very happy to have gone here not only were the wines phenomenal but the owners were so great in making you feel rest assured that they cared about your safety while enjoying your wine experience. The wines itself were great, my favorite is the Hillside Riesling. The videos that went with it were helpful in teaching about the different kinds and the makes. We belong to the Madroña wine club which calls for 3 shipments of 4 bottles (mixed) per year. This gives us a splendid opportunity to "Get outta Dodge" for a sweet day trip. We were tutored by knowledgeable, delightful sommelier, Steve, and winemaker Paul Bush (owner) encouraged us to pray for rain. The parking was filled, we thought we had to find another spot but we found the perfect spot near the entrance. From the outside it looked small but i was fooled there is more underground. From the entrance they had 2 sides of the bar where you can sample and purchase as well. Restrooms Of course so much sipping we need to tinkle, i thought the bathroom was well cleaned and decorated. It was a plus. Our mission starts with going underground to sample all the foods and wine they had to offer. They had a total of 7 stations of wine paired with food for you to try. Some Memorable foods had was the Curry chicken vegetable soup with bread. The sample was filled with so much veggies, it was hearty and spring-ish feeling. It paired well with riesling. On one of the cheese samples i had Got a sample of the st andre cheese, this cheese literally melts in mouth. I told wifey we need this in our life so we got one square block, where the lady was trying to upsell us on a bigger piece, where she said it will only last you a minute. lol... i don't believe it until we bust open the cheese on our little outdoor picnic brunch. Another memorable sample was the wine sauce drizzled on top of the bread with roasted mushrooms. The presentation didn't look good, but when bite into it with a good bite size you get that good foodgasm shiver. This was paired with the malbec, which compliments it well. Overall Love their dessert wines and the port paired with cake was awesome. I tend to like the port they served here, and i like how they did a good job with the food pairings. After all the sippings and good stuff, we were off to the destination. We went Upstairs back to the small cozy room with items displayed for sale. It was tempting to bring some stuff back home but i was good. They have this cute black masculine cat name Theo who just roams around the winery and enjoy his company with all kinds of visitor. I have visited Madroña Vineyards ever since I moved to Sacramento. The laid-back winery is hidden behind the large apple orchards in the heart of Apple Hill, but they have been making wine here for a very long time. Their specialty is the Riesling with some excellent vintages, but they are a full winery with lots of options. Madroña is usually part of an Apple Hill trip due to its location. Groups often show up and can quickly fill up the cozy tasting room. Watch out for the attack cats if they leave their post near the fireplace! The staff know their wine and are proud of the product which is as refreshing as the stuff in your glass. They reverse the tasting order - starting with the reds - to shake things up, although they shine on their white wine selection anyway. Any place you return to over and over has to be good. Madroña lacks some of the modern fancy stuff found elsewhere in the foothills, but they still serve a classic wine style. The whole experience is great - driving through the orchards and vineyards, walking through the trees to the heavy front door, and of course the wine. read more
