We LOVE 1850! From the first time we went, we've enjoyed just about every wine they have. They are more California style reds which we enjoy a lot. They have some tasty whites as well. Myka their sister winery have wonderful European style wines and some great Pinots too. It's fun to have pretty much two spots in one. They also have delicious food too. It's not a huge menu but it hits the spot for when you want some bites while you try wine. One of our favorite things too is that do lots of fun events. My fiancé proposed to me earlier in the day so we decided to go wine tasting to celebrate. The ambiance was delightful-- Not your typical "boujee" upscale winery. We loved how chill and laidback it was. Sarah was so kind and knowledgeable. She even went out of her way and brought us a complimentary brownie to celebrate our engagement! They made us feel like family here. I ended up stopping in randomly with 3 friends for a tasting after spending the day at the lake. It turns out they were having their annual shrimp boil and live music. It was ticket only and sold out but they went out of their way to add a table for us. This place is a lovely side street retreat to sit down and enjoy some delicious wines and relax. 1850 Wine Cellars is the new kid on the block, but you mustn't count them out during your visit to Sutter Creek. This was the last stop on our wine crawl, and it left a grand impression on us! First off, I loved the atmosphere here! It was very lively and super interactive. Everyone was social and upbeat. A total difference from some of the more intimate wine tasting rooms that we visited, but I enjoyed the change of pace. We sat at a corner table and enjoyed our tasting with wine pairings. Paige was our host and she was wonderful! I have to give her big kudos because apparently it wasn't our last stop either. But, some people seemed to have hit up waaay more tasting rooms along the way than we did... aka those fools were super DRUNK by the time that they hit this tasting room! Luckily, Paige remained calmed and handled everything smoothly. A tasting costs $5 and features a tasting flight from their current tasting list. They had a list of 7 different wines for ya to taste! Honestly, you'll get the best bang for your buck with the tastings here versus many of the other tasting rooms. The tasting fee is waived with a bottle purchase. The prices of their bottles are extremely reasonable, and you can purchase a bottle and enjoy it on their patio! Not gonna lie... by the time we got here, I was already feeling quite "wonderful". Since I know my limits, I decided not to try all 7 of the featured wines. This actually would have been a great first stop as opposed to the last, but it was still a fun time! The two standouts for me here was their 2016 Viognier and their 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon. They paired our wines with stuffed mushrooms, mini capreses, and crostinis topped with cheese. They had the best food pairings out of all the tasting rooms that we visited that day! It was fantastic! I love Viognier, and 1850 did it justice here. It was so aromatic and lovably floral; my favorite! Something that you could pair with just about anything. I was also impressed by their 2016 Cab Sauv. Paige did the famous wine roll with the Cab, and it brought out all of the wonderful flavors! It was leathery and bold which isn't my typical liking for a Cab, but I really liked this one. And, might I add that a bottle of it only costed $16? Um, WHAAAT? Now, that's crazy! If you get hungry, they also have a bites menu that you can take advantage of during certain hours of the day. I'm happy that I made a stop to this fun little tasting room, and I would love to revisit again soon. read more

1850 Wine Cellars was a hidden gem tucked off one of the side streets in Sutter Creek. Christa, Haden and Shay are alway friendly and accommodating. We enjoy their wines. Their late harvest zin is the best. Fruit forward without being too sweet. If you do happen to drop by, try their charcuterie board! They do a great job pairing flavors. It's been almost a year since we stumbled upon this AMAZING tasting room. We heard about wine tasting at Sutter Creek but never went. So when we visited the cute and historic town of Sutter Creek we were pleasantly surprised. We absolutely adore this town, its residents, the shops, restaurants and of course, its wine! We stopped in 1850 Wine Cellars, which is on Randolph Street, off of Old Route 49, on the main street of Sutter Creek. This tasting room is very cool with friendly staff and some excellent wines! I fell in love with the 2016 Cabernet, which is all sold out :(... We met Guy who was our tasting room host and he made our first time there such a memorable experience. He showed us how to "roll" our wine glasses, thus making the wine smell and taste much better! We've been swirling our wines the wrong way, lol! I was so impressed by not only the quality of service but the exceptional wines that I immediately became a wine club member that day! Since then we have literally visited Sutter Creek at least once a month, bringing in new friends at each visit. And each time we go we have such an amazing time there. Our first stop each time we go to Sutter Creek is my 1850 Winery. Love this place!!! Plus they serve some amazing and delicious small bites and charcuterie. The entire staff...Carolyn, Guy, Paige and Krista are so awesome and make every visit such a fun one! Great wines and great people! For two years they have falsely represented making payments and are willfully not paying small local businesses during Covid-19 even though they have received well over 6-figures in PPP loans. Its a tiny tasting bar, just enough room for friends and family, but Guy does an awesome job walking yo through their wonderful wines. And be sure to ask about the glass rolling. He pours a perfect amount of wine, then lays the glass on the counter and rolls it to aerate to perfection. I recommend doing so with the Barbera. read more

Fellow Yelper Lydia is right: wine tasting rooms are really judged on service and atmosphere. With rare exception, I really can't tell the differences in wine. I'm on vacation and I like a sociable chat. We'll usually buy a courtesy bottle wherever we go or just pay the tasting fee if there is one. I was very pleased with 1850. Our server was very charming and a lot of fun. At first I didn't want to hear the b.s. about a bronze medal in a county fair but then he warmed up to us and started telling stories.It was fun and we'll definitely be back. A wine cellar rating really only relies on two things - atmosphere and service. Taste in wine is too varied, because what someone else hates, I may love. And price at these places is somewhat consistent. (I said somewhat!) That said: Atmosphere - small room, a couple tables outside, otherwise, fairly plain. Service - our pourer was incredible! Actual rating 4.5. 1850 Wine Cellars is one of the 12 tasting rooms located along Main Street inside Sutter Creek. An event was held in the city that featured 11 of the 12 tasting rooms and this was one of the 6 wineries that I participated in the tasting menu. Additionally this was one of the two wineries that I purchased wine to bring back to SD and hence justified a writeup of the full tasting experience. 1850 is named after the year that California became a state. It pays homage to the pioneers who came from Old World countries with strong viticultural ties and settled in California Gold Rush Country to stake their claim for a new life. Therefore the grapes that are grown in the Amador, El Dorado and Fair Play counties are considered "heritage varietals", grapes that were first brought over from the original California pioneers. Think barbera and primitivo/zinfandel along with some white varietals you may not have heard of. This aint your typical NorCal "bold cab" and "buttery chard" winery. The tasting room's small and there are no distinguishing features. I do remember that out of the tasting rooms I visited that day this felt the coziest. My friend/fellow Yelper Eugene and I realized that the point of a wine crawl is to enjoy the ambience of the tasting rooms you are visiting, something that can't be done if your goal is to attempt all 12 tasting rooms in one sitting! Therefore we stuck ourselves in a corner table and just mellowed out over the seven wines in their tasting list. What made it even more cozy was Guy (pronounced "ghee", like the Indian clarified butter) surveying the tasting room with observant eyes and making sure that his guests were happy. A thoughtful sommelier can make all the difference in a tasting experience! The winery also had small bites for purchase but because I was a part of an event that featured all the tasting rooms along Main Street they also had a complimentary small plate of bites that featured heirloom tomatoes, stuffed mushrooms and a small crostini that had a creamy cheese on top. These were a pleasant surprise as they weren't originally advertised as one of the tasting rooms offering bites. It made the experience even more cozy. TASTING LIST - Viognier, El Dorado, 2016 - 2016 Roussanne, El Dorado - Rosé, Sierra Foothills, 2016 - Cabernet Sauvignon, Fair Play, 2016 - Zinfandel, El Dorado, 2016 - Barbera, Cooper Vineyard, 2016 - Cabernet Franc, 2016 Apologies for the lack of detailed notes for each of the tastes. When you are the fourth winery offering tastings in the span of 2-3 hours, the wines begin tasting the same and my lack of sobriety doesn't allow making observant notes that make up a useful review. I remember the reds were unremarkable but the one distinctive wine I had was a white: their 2016 Roussanne from El Dorado ($32). It *immediately* reminded me of Rombauer Chardonnay, which itself is a very sentimental wine to me because of the bottles the No1DP and I had over the years. It tastes almost identical to Rombauer Chardonnay and has a very similar price point, so I immediately bought it after completing the tasting. (NOTE: The tasting notes describe the Roussanne as having a very rich and silky mouthfeel with exquisite quince, honey-nut and beeswax aromas). This was also my favorite white wine from my 3-day Amador County weekend. I hope the No1DP enjoys this wine as much as I did. The Viognier was also a good white but different from the Roussanne in that it is crisp and more fruit-like on the mouthfeel. The aromas are of white peach, melon and honeysuckle and the palate has a white fruit and a creamy/citrus impression. Times like this I wish I had stayed in NorCal upon completion of my program instead of moving back to SD. The only reason why I didn't get this one as well was simply due to lack of luggage space. When you can fit a maximum of six wines in your luggage you just have to be picky. Thanks to Guy and 1850 Wine Cellars for a wonderful experience.
