Dean Street has a lot of pubs within quite a small stretch. Amongst these is the Nellie Dean. It is quite a small pub with an attractive red exterior. The bar is fully stocked and the service is good. It is popular amongst the media crowd. Additionally, the Private Eye office is just around the corner so if you want to see Ian Hislop in the flesh...It not an exciting place but there is a pleasant relaxed atmosphere and it is nice for a couple of drinks. Came here a few weeks ago when my partner was in town visiting. He was very interested in tasting some authentic British pies and--having tasted Pieminister pies at various markets around the city--decided to check out the Nellie Dean for a bite to eat and a couple of pints. Inside, it is cosy but comfortable with fun decoration on the upper level where the majority of the food is served. There is an additional bar upstairs, which is also where they heat up the pies and sides for consumption. The pies are served in a very cute set up, on a large wooden board. This place did not disappoint. Though, we had to come here twice before we were able to sit down to eat some pie. On a weekday evening, this place was overflowing with locals and tourists alike with pints-in hand. If you're very lucky you might be able to squeeze in and order some food but it's a much safer bet in the afternoon. The next day--much earlier--we came back for a second attempt at pie-eating and were (very) successful. We each had a mothership--though I can't remember what kind of pie--and we were both stuffed with tons of pie, mash, cheese, gravy and fried onions. It was a bit pricy for a pie and a pint but certainly very tasty. Would return again for more drinks and tasty pies. :) read more

Ended up here after some shopping to kill time before our show. Your average pub, it's cozy. they serve English beer on tap and some pretty good cocktails, and the bartender was nice. Prices are reasonable. The space downstairs is very small, and we see a few people hanging outside. The bathroom is quite small, and it smells like mildew, which I'm not a fan of, but it's good enough I suppose... In sum, good beer, good service, passable bathroom, I mean the loo. read more

I always remember this place for the time that my friend Chris and I spent all afternoon beating everyone at pool. It happened more than once actually because we used to come here during work hours and leave all the other staff to clear up, but it was fine because Chris was the manager. Happy days really, with a pool table, bar and jukebox upstairs, it's all you need for entertainment. You also get quite a mixed and interesting crowd here; a combination of old man drinkers, young people that like hearing old man drinker anecdotes and the inevitable passer by crowd. I prefer pubs to bars in Soho, because the bars are generally full of media types getting drunk on expenses and embarrassing themselves and the Nellie is as a good a pub as any in this part of town and pretty cheap too. read more

The pub is perfectly situated on Dean St. in Soho. It is a quaint little watering hole, with a rather good selection of drinks at a very reasonable price. With its low ceiling on the way down to the male toilet, and its cosy English pub feeling, this place definitely has a charm about it. I really enjoy finding pubs with pool tables, as they are not that common in London. It definitely attracts your typical Soho crowd, which makes it a little too pretentious for my liking. Besides that, I can't really find a bad thing about this place. read more

We walked past this pub so many times during our stay because our hotel wasn't that far away but every time we saw the "best pies in London" sign. So finally we just had to try these hyped up amazing pies before we left. We didn't have time to eat in, so I ordered takeaway, which they were able to accommodate for us. We ordered the Blue & Moo and the Matador. They didn't take long to serve and package up into nice and easy takeaway packaging each plus utensils. I waited for this whilst my partner used the amenities. Which he commented was like ground zero. The pub itself was very typical English pub and quite busy outside. The pies themselves were delicious, lived up to the sign bragging. I don't know where else you can buy these pies around but I would do it again next time I'm in town. read more

A decent 'earthy' boozer in Soho. It has a nice seedy feel, and has been left to decay a little, but it all adds to the atmosphere. There's some interesting peeps in there, once I was having a quiet lunchtime pint with a mate, talking about techy work rubbish, when in comes an excellent tramp, who gradually works his way around all the tables, desperately trying to get in on a conversation. As he slowly clears the pub out, we're last on his list, and it was a joy to behold! Watching someone try to steer a conversation away from what level of RAID protection you need to horse racing really made our day. Priceless! read more

Had a plethora of great times at the Nellie Dean... in fact you could probably say it helped shape my young, impressionable mind. Getting drunk with the media crowd in Soho is definitely an experience! On quieter nights, there was usually a transvestite propping up the bar, with me and my friends at the other end. Thats' if we were not outside, trying to soak up some precious rays and avoiding the girls entering the Candy Bar next door. The only downers is that it gets insanely packed out and that chased me away in the end to other bars in the area. Still, on a less busy night, it's a great place to hang out, shoot the breeze and put the world to rights. read more

The Nellie Dean is my favourite pub in Soho. It's always open late, until at least midnight, and their drinks are phenomenally cheap. A double whiskey and coke cost me four quid! That price is miraculous in Soho. Random celebrities pop up here from time to time too, so if you're a groupie you'll get major leads if you become a regular. read more

The Nelly is a summer pub. To be honest, this review could probably finish after those 6 words. In the spirit of Qype, however, please help yourself to a little more info. In winter, you can only really appreciate the Nelly's bottom-clenching, elbow-jogging, sorry-mate-ing, excuse me-ing, pint-spilling titchiness. I've been in larger changing rooms. I've worn bigger hats. If you stripped every stick of furniture out of the place and crammed it with tiny people in skintight outfits, you'd be hard pushed to accommodate a rugby union team and 2 physios. Being Qypers and therefore au fait with the ins and outs of W1, you won't visit it until the sun comes out. And then, dear folk, it all makes a little more sense. Because then everyone spills out onto Dean Street and starts to mingle with the outspill from the neighbouring Toucan pub and it all becomes a bit more fun. I've spent many a balmy evening balanced on a bit of pavement outside the Nelly, fending off the panhandlers and keeping a close eye on my bag, dodging the occasional irate driver trying to get onto Soho Square and exchanging a little banter with the procession of ladies wandering into the lesbian bar round the corner. It's fun, as long as you go with a large group of mates and keep the drinks coming. Sober up, and you might find yourself wondering what you're doing standing on a street corner throwing booze down your neck when you could be, oh I don't know, out in the country or on a nice white beach somewhere. And drinker's remorse is an ugly thing. read more

For a minute, I was convinced I'd walked into the 'Samoan Pub' from Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrells; plenty of foliage for camoflage - but thankfully no psychotic midgets. Having said that, being of shorter stature would be a distinct advantage if you need to use the gentleman's facilities. No, actually even the vertically challenged could knock themselves out if not careful on the stairs; the ceiling is that low! Of far greater importance though, is the selection of pasties. At £1.20 a pop the cheapest Sunday lunch I've had in a whileand for in pub entertainment they were showing a replay of the Calzaghe fight. Small battle cruiser, but it packs a punch. read more

A few years back, I used to quite like this pub. It was busy, but in a good way, the people were usually interesting and the prices okay. Maybe my tastes have changed, but I try and avoid it now. Let's start with the beer - It's pretty poor. And expensive. Not only does it not taste particularly good, the selection is limited (hmmm, Fosters or Carling?). The last time I went I had the pleasure of paying £3.20 for said bog standard beer. The staff were rude. And I got it in a plastic cup (the ultimate sacrilege - although nothing that said beer doesn't deserve). Midweek isn't so bad, but avoid on a Friday night - space is limited and you will be waiting for ages to get served. HOWEVER - It is good for a private party, as the upstairs opens up and it's a decent size. read more

Not a bad little pub, flower baskets hang outside, with an OK wine list. Usually very busy and you end up out on the street, which is fine in the Summer. Could do with a bit of a facelift, although, you wouldn't want it to become beige like so many other bars. It's a boozer after all! TV and fruit machine. Today we headed in to Central London for a Pieminister at the Nellie Dean in Soho. The bar had some lovely ales and drinks on offer and friendly bar staff. I went for a Doom Bar bitter and my fiancée went for an Amstel and then we both headed off upstairs to tuck in to some pie. We weren't served very quickly because they had just one staff member working the top seating area, so I had to get up to ask for a menu and then get up again to walk to the counter to place our order. The pies were served to the table around 10 minutes after placing the order so a very speedy service. We have had Pieminister pies in the past and they have never failed to deliver, always packed full of flavour on a hearty lump of mash and mint mushy peas. YUM! Maybe a little under staffed over lunch time but we had a great time and will definitely visit again. Lovely pub. read more

This used to be a great little pub in Soho. Books lined the windows, available to buy for a pound or two. Upstairs had a jukebox, pool table, and a strange array of paintings and a lifesize sculpture made of sticks. It had a lot of charm, and super cozy. But now its become a city pub that wants to be "quirky", tacky wallpaper with "iconic" images of London, with the "Keep Calm and Carry On" and "Abbey Road" signage repeated over and over. Faux exposed brick, and some driftwood paneling on a few of the non-wallpapered walls. It's the fever dream of a marketing exec working from a Google search on "London" and "Trendy". It fails to be British nor trendy, but looks like the perfect tourist trap. RIP Nellie Dean read more

Great pub in Soho - packed and flowing into the street when I was there on a Friday night, but still able to easily get pints. Quiet upstairs - and a great place to taste their pies - they are fantastic. Deerstalker with mash and peas was my favorite - my wife loved the Blue Moo. read more

Great little boozer, stairs to the toilet are a lot of fun. Bar staff really friendly and helpful. The ginger barmaid is hot too.
