The interior of the pub is beautiful...and that's where the positives end. My Christmas lunch there was horrible. Our server (French woman) was really pushy about my wife and I ordering drinks. She came by our table three times to get us to order drinks. When we only ordered two non-alcoholic drinks, she pretty much ignored us the entire meal. And while all other tables were getting their food in 10-15 minutes, we got our food an hour later (keep in mind the people who got their food quick showed up much later than we did). When I spoke to their manager Sophie to inquire about the food, she replied passive aggressively about not rushing the servers...but it had been an hour already! When the food arrived it was bland and inedible. The fish was bland and tasteless. The parsnip/turnip soup tasted like water. Huge disappointment. But it sure lived up to hackneyed stereotypes about English food. We paid almost 80£ for a subpar meal and an unpleasant experience.

Food was great. Was looking for a classic English dinner at a pub and that's exactly what I got. Drinks were also great. The pub itself was a fun atmosphere. Service was fantastic. We had Chris as our server and he was very attentive, courteous and personable. Would definitely come back here next time we are in London!

Located just next door to Oxford Street tube, it comes as no surprise that this pub is always busy. It is actually a really nice pub though - not particularly different from any others but it has a pleasant atmosphere and I like the secluded seating as opposed to 'open plan' areas. The decor is quite standard but a little more traditional than most. It has that oldy worldy type atmosphere and the staff are friendly. There is a separate eating section upstairs which serves fairly average pub food which is quite decent but not very adventurous. In the summer, it is pleasant as you can sit outside but as the area is so hectic, it is always loud. A nice pub to go for meeting friends or as a quick drink stop on arrival in Oxford Street.

There's an original london boozer feel to this place-you feel like you've walked into a dickens tale or a sherlock holmes set. There's intricate and ornate designs on the ceiling and wooden partitions giving a real old worldy kind of feel to the pub. There is an upstairs dinning area to the pub but to be honest the food isn't that great-you'll find a lot better in the area for the same prices but i like going here as it's a perfect spot to meet up with friends as it's right outside Oxford Circus tube station. If you want to sit down there's a few tables outside and a couple of bar stools inside but apart from that there's not a lot else and if you've been trapsing up and down Oxford Street you may be disppointed if you're looking for somewhere to relax your tootsies. However, they serve a good pint and the staff are friendly and helpful.

It turns out that I have been to this pub before, which is a little surprising since this is only my third time in London and I thought I knew all of the pubs that I have previously visited. Mind you it didn't click until I actually walked inside into to what was a pretty familiar interior - the last time I was here was back in 2011 when I went to have a beer before going and seeing a musical at the theatre just down the road. Anyway this pub is somewhat bigger that many of the other pubs in the area and also stands out in that the bar is actually divided into three separate rooms, and a fourth room, which is actually a lounge bar, down the back. Also, upstairs, they have a dining area. So, from what I gathered it seems as if you can rent out one of these rooms for your own private party, though they aren't actually that large (or at least the middle one, which I suspect would have a lot of difficulty holding any more than five people). While I wouldn't call it an awesome pub, it is still pretty good, and somewhat better than the other offerings around the place.

I LOVE this old pub, it is a perfect example of London's many old victorian buildings retaining its features as it was many years ago and not being tempted to modernise it. There are little booths to talk or have a cosy cuddle in and the celings and glass are as they were perfectly preserved in time. But i dropped a star because my glass was dirty (they gave me a free drink to compensate) and the loos were filthy!!

My wife actually booked dinner reservations in advance for Ye Old Cheshire Cheese, it was one of a few we did that for rather than just popping in. For some of these, Cheshire included, it isn't a bad idea if you want a full meal to do so as it gives you a table in a dining area that is quieter than the More raucous areas of the pub and guarantees you plenty of elbow room to dine. Every pub has fish and chips, and we had our share of it during our 8+ day trek, but my wife swears by this place as having the absolute best. I'd likely agree with that--we both had the traditional fish, chips, peas platter and every bite was great. We had a few slices of sourdough to hold us over while waiting for those plates. My wife had a bit of wine, and I tried a lager, lower ABV ale, and a pour of scotch opting for their "house" scotch. The spirits/beer menu was the same I saw used at a couple of what I think must be "sister" pubs all using the same distilleries and brewers. We were too full to try dessert. Service was friendly. Not sure if it was the vintage of my scotch or her wine, but price-wise this was by far our priciest pub visit in the area and I can't quite point my fingers at why, but I don't regret our meal and time here. As for historic interest, you can find pictures and placards of many of the pubs famous patrons from history--Dickens, Mark Twain on visits to London, etc. A first edition of a Dickens' book adorned a post by our table.

Cool pub dating back to 1300s?…read more Fish and chips were great. Price was okay given its a popular and historic spot. Beer was excellent and prices reasonable Only complaint was the dining area was extremely quiet on a Friday afternoon. A little strange for a pub

The history alone makes it worth visiting, and the location is perfect if you're exploring the area. It feels very classic London in the best way. We stopped in for a pint and honestly... the whole after-work beer culture over there is something I really need to bring back with me to the States. The beer was great, the atmosphere was lively without feeling overwhelming, and it just felt like one of those places where people naturally gather and stay awhile. Definitely worth stopping into if you're in the area.

Two story space - the ground floor feature the bar and handles walk in lunch; the upstairs is a dining room for those with reservations. Fun fact, as part of the history, the pub used to be the host of bare knuckle fights and had regulars like Charles Dickens. Wildfarmed sourdough - served with whipped salted butter and Guinness butter. Well toasted bread and the butters with salt were well made. Fuller's London Pride marinated steak and ale pie - served with seasonal veggies and red wine gravy, as well as either mash potatoes or triple cooked chips. If there is one dish London does really well, it's their pies. It was beautifully made and loaded with steak. The red wine gravy was decadent and added a perfect amount of moisture to the pie. Triple cooked chips were perfectly crispy but fluffy on the inside. Corn fed chicken breast - served with garlic and sage butter, mash potato, cavolo nero, and crispy onions. Only took a bite of this as it was my partner's dish but the bite of chicken I had was very juicy and well seasoned.
