Really wonderful place for a late lunch on a weekend afternoon. We had been here about 8 years ago, for a wedding reception, and of course that was a lovely/special event. When it's your final night in Amsterdam and you're burned out on planning meals, you stumble upon Nel! We were taking a nice canal walk and waiting for the mood to strike us food-wise and Nel looked like it had a nice vibe for a "last supper" of sorts. I debated between 3 and 4 here because I do think it was a good choice, but there's room for improvement and a lot of inconsistency with the menu. The great: - You can't beat the views overlooking the canal and general vibe of this spot. Truly gorgeous. - The menu is wide ranging and they have good specials. We REALLY enjoyed a HUGE and well-priced portion of mussels to split, and we also really liked the well-cooked bavette. - Good drink list. We should have opted for a bottle of the house white as it was more lovely than expected. - I got to go swing on the swings next door after dinner. The less great: - We sat in the wrong "area" upon arriving and were never told that it was drinks only on one side of the terrace and dinner only on the other. We ended up moving but staff seemed somehow annoyed that we didn't know despite there being no signage or mention. - The food is just okay, not special in anyway - do yourself a favor and SKIP the starters. It ranged from standard to straight bizarre. If you take a look at my photos you'll see an insane looking shrimp dish that was labelled as "shrimp cocktail." It is served with subpar DIY toast from a toaster and...grapefruit? And the shrimp themselves are the tiny baby kind that freak me out. The whole dish was so odd. - We also tried the zucchini dish that I guess is served cold and also with hazelnuts and it's like someone said "you wanna know what would be avant garde?" and then put it on a menu. I love hazelnuts! I love zucchini! This was...interesting. There were almost no locals when we dined here and a lot of group/work dinners that seemed to be taking place. We stopped here after the museum for some gluhwein (mulled wine) and to chat. We sat outside on a January afternoon because it wasn't too cold. They have nice heaters and wind protectors. It was very cozy. The indoors looked very nice. What's 5-stars about this place is the service and atmosphere. We weren't there during the dinner menu, so I can't comment on that. The snacks were great and a huge daytime menu. read more

Nel works for a simple lunch. I ordered the beet root salad and it was actually really good. Not somewhere that I would go if I wanted to treat myself to an amazing lunch or dinner. They have a nice big terrace, but unfortunately the trees to some degree hide the sun. We all know that is the last thing you want to experience once you get some sun in Amsterdam. You want to suck up the sun as much as possible, even if your like me, permanently tan already. However, if you just want a nice terrace to relax, then go for it. After have fun strolling the shops in the neighborhood, it's a perfect location to just chill out and relax. read more

What Nel has going for it is the big outside patio overlooking the Amstelplein and canals. Inside it is very small and if it's busy can become somewhat claustrophobic. The food is decent but nothing special, I wouldn't come here specifically to eat but if I was in the neighbourhood then I might stop by. Even better than coming for dinner is just coming for a coffee or beer on the patio and admiring the scenery. Beware if you don't like lots of noisy children: the Amstelplein has a playground that is regularly full of neighbourhood kids playing so if you are sitting outside there's a decent chance the square will be full of children. If that's not your jam and you just want a quiet cup of coffee somewhere, best to avoid Nel. read more

This is the great place to park your bike and grab a drink especially if you have kids with you. There's plenty of our our seating with people smoking cigarettes up, but you can watch your kids slide and run around outside. Nachos were pretty aweful, but the beer and wines are great when you can enjoy a canal side outdoor seating. read more

I'm not totally sold on Nel quite yet but I am really happy they had Pilsner Urquell on tap and for a fair price at that. It seemed like a fun place to be, especially nice on the terrace if the weather is good. I tried the veggie burger for take away, which I don't think they are really keen on doing. The funny thing about veggie burgers is that sometimes they fall apart quite easily. This makes eating them a big mess in the end. Otherwise you get pre-made frozen patties which just don't taste as good. Somehow Nel's veggie patty is both housemade and doesn't fall apart. The fries which came with it were also crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. I also had vegetarian bitterballen while I was there and it was just fine. The service in the place was a little distracting while I was there. It seemed because they were busy you didn't have the full attention of anyone. There was hardly a smile from the staff and I felt I was putting them out by making my order. read more

Summer is here (we hope) and the terrases are packed! Nel boasts one of the largest terrases in Amsterdam. They have a boules game set up outside of their terras. I ended up playing with friends my first night there. Seemed like a nice spot to return to. So I did. I few nights later I met a friend there on a Monday for their jazz night. Great Jazz, I must say. Definitely worth returning to. Food: meh: ordered a mediocre veggie burger with mediocre fries for €14.50. Was not very impressed, especially for the price. Drinks, atmosphere, and space are a plus. Food seems a bit overpriced. But I'll be back! read more

The vega burger looked great but the combo of dry goat cheese. Dry polenta on dry bread was a chore to get down. After ordering three more cups of dipping sauce it was manageable. BUT my boyfriend had the regular meat burger and said it was great so maybe I'll give that a try if I'm ever back. read more

Not too bad for a quick meetup. Comfy couch seating, attractive bartenders and quite spacious. Nothing spectacular, but nothing to make you avoid the place either. Easy-peasy spot to check out. I'd visit it again. read more

From all the places that used to be on this location in the last 25 years, Nel is probably the best. This doesn't say anything though because everything that was here used to be pretty shit. Luckily Nel is alright, its probably better in summertime and the jazz nights really seem to be a hit with the expaxts. The food is nothing special but good enough for lunch. read more

A bar owner down the road suggested we try Nel for dinner. They made a plan to seat us without a reservation even though they were busy. The outside setting under trees is good for fair weathered dining. Our party tried a variety of dishes starting with some finger eats that were excellent. The main courses, although not offensive, received varying levels of praise. The South African Chardonnay was nice and they also offer a variety of draft and bottled beers. One of my favorite spots on a Monday night for drinks and jazz. If you get there between 7 and 8, you can easily get a table or a spot at the bar. The atmosphere is cozy, the bands are well selected, and you can often chat with the musicians during their break. The waitstaff and bartenders are very friendly. The food is decent, but go for their terrace which is one of the best in the city. It's a nice place for lunch or a daytime coffee break. They have a seasonal dinner menu and some seasons are much better than others. I frequently host group events here and they gladly accept our reservations...plus they always treat us very well (which is sometimes hard to find if you're with a large group). read more

I really like Nel...I have ate here many times in the past. However, this evening it took 75 minutes to receive our entree. People sitting next to us who arrived after we had been waiting were served first and finished their meal, and we were still waiting. The waitress tried to compensate by offering a drink on the house, but I am sorry, a discount on the bill would have been in order. Now, I like Nel for its beautiful outdoor ambiance, and the food is very good. But the inconsistent service is a real problem. read more

I had a really great toastie there in the morning. And a very nice orange juice I also later ordered the egg rolls and samosa's which were made fresh. Not the best I've ever ate but hit the spot. I was also able to sit outside with my dog and they brought him water. II love the outdoor location of this place. It's really cute. Also the building is part of a church. It was raining hard and a Monday ( a lot of restaurants closed on Monday ) and we reluctantly went inside this restaurant. Should have gone with our gut and eaten anywhere else. This was honestly the worst meal I have ever had. If it was cheap it would have been less upsetting, but this poses as an upscale place. The "special" soup was portobello mushroom and it was ok. The main ingredient was salt. We had a beet salad that was so bland you couldn't taste anything. The beet slices were as this as paper and it tasted like water? The absolute worst was the beef tenderloin special served with raspberry sauce, green beans and fries. The server recommended medium rare ( which we always order at home in New York) and the meat that came was literally raw and blue in the middle. No flavor, tough, chewy and raw. It was gross and mostly inedible. The green beans were way over cooked, limp pieces of nothing. The raspberries appeared to be moldy? Or preserved in a jar until they were brown and shriveled? This dish was 30 euro and we were insulted. The only good thing about this place is you can get a nice glass of wine for 4 euro. Better off eating at McDonalds. read more

Nice atmosphere to eat at but the service is absolutely terrible at dinner especially when it's crowded. I waited over an hour to get my main course meal and witnessed another table that arrived 15 minutes after I sat down got their meal just about 40 minutes after I sat down! Terrible. The food is overpricey as well. It deserves ZERO stars because of the horrendous service. Other than that you will be falling asleep waiting for your meal. read more
