Who ever created this idea, was a genius.... For those of…read moreyou who do not know what casual carpool is.. Exclusively for the east bay folks who commute to sf for work. Ever since Caltrans created the carpool/diamond lane, drivers who do not wish to pay full price of the toll/ bypass traffic can have a total of 3 or more people in their vehicle as FASTRAK will charge $2.50 vs $6.00 during the weekdays. There are several locations ie: Hercules, Rodeo, Vallejo, Fairfield, El Cerrito, Oakland, Emeryville, Concord, Alameda, Berkeley etc.. As for being a share rider depending on location, it is common courtesy to pay the driver $1.25. There is one location for drop off at 1st & Fremont st, and one location for a ride back which is on Beale & Howard St. It's been 12yrs since I've been commuting into San Francisco and I'm glad casual carpool has been a back up for me, just in case if I can't find a ride. I've saved $$$ by commuting this way-beats taking the bus and paying for bart. I know riding with strangers can be weird, but is totally safe. Ps. you are not obligated to talk!

The work day is behind us, now. Its reflection bounces off of the tall glass buildings before us…read moreand showers our faces like the lunar light on an early Autumn morning. The afternoon begins to give way to a cool evening. Just like yesterday and the day before that, last week and last month, day after day, back and forth, south to work, north back home, all and everything we've invested (our time mostly) seems to shine at this moment, while we're waiting in line for our car. It's a different car every day. We never know who it's going to be, we just hope it's soon. It's as if we just found out that we've won the lottery when we are finally the first in line and a big car pulls up. But we don't care if we have to sit in the back of a hatchback - We are only thinking about getting home. No one wants the big guy in mirrored shades driving the ol' red Ford pick up. He comes rolling up to our sad curb and the first few ladies shrug him off down the line. Edgar eventually shuffles up and into the rig, and off he goes towards I-80, clicking in for the diamond lane. As he departs, he might stare down at those of us remaining in line with a sigh of satisfaction; we are now inferior to him who is now the passenger. I used Casual Carpool for 3 years and never said a word to any one of you. We rarely made eye contact. I spilled my coffee on one lady by accident. I apologized profusely - She wiped it off listlessly and dragged her body a couple steps forward to catch up with the moving line of people. To bide our time in line, we would listen to music, read a book, connect with someone in the real world via cell phone, stare up at the buildings and imagine a hot sexual happening on the 17th floor, or find the farthest point on the horizon and just stare. I read more books during these three years than any other time in my life. On some rides, I would help the driver stay awake by listening to anecdotes that have probably been told time and time again on those busy drives that seem to stretch out through time. If you're not in the front with the driver, you're the lucky one in the backseat: Your home for the hour-and-a-half-or-so it takes to get to that Greyhound parking lot on Lemon Street in Vallejo, California.

My original review is now old enough to vote, so OAK deserves an update…read more I'll start with the bad. Why, OAK, why? Yes, many people, especially people from Michigan, might not realize that Oakland is a city across the Bay from San Francisco and is actually closer in proximity to San Francisco than SFO is. But Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport? Really, that's the name you went with after the City and County of San Francisco threatened to sue the pants off of you for trying to rename OAK San Francisco Oakland Airport? What does the bay have to do with the airport? Yes, I realize that the runways are on the bay, but so are SFO's--in fact, I believe the entirety of SFO's runways are constructed on fill, so they were originally the bay itself. Have some pride! Stop trying to be The City and be what you are, The Town. OK. That's enough. But wait, there's more. They've also since gotten rid of the generic restaurant that once overlooked the baggage claim/security area. It was replaced by multiple (bad) restaurants, which I believe have since been replaced by a single bar. (Good, I guess?) Also, when I returned here last week, it took a full thirty minutes for bags from our flight to hit the baggage carousel, even though it was 11 p.m. My flight landed just before before 11, but I didn't get home by BART and bus until 1:05 a.m. Why, OAK, why? Here comes the good. AirBART was replaced by the BART Airport Connector, the Gray Line, or whatever they're calling it this quarter. (Seriously, if you're going to spend millions of dollars on a project, pick and stick with a single name.) That's much better in many ways than the old bus system, but the OAK BART station is still pretty far away from Terminal 2, which I use exactly 100 percent of the time. It's also not right next to Terminal 1. All of this is normally fine, but it's bad when it rains. I've definitely had weather delays here in the past eighteen years, but SFO has had many many many more, so I can't blame OAK for that. In terms of its runways, it has location location location. In terms of its Oakland neighborhood, it's shady as all get-out. I'm generally the person who poo-poos other people's criticisms of supposedly bad (usually just poor and/or run-down and/or non-White) neighborhoods, but the neighborhood along Hegenberger Road from the freeway to OAK is really bad and dangerous, and it has gotten worse. Many businesses have shuttered because of the parking-lot crime, which is daily car break-ins but also includes carjackings, muggings, and stabbings. Black Bear Diner closed. In-N-Out might have closed as well. So don't stay in a hotel, get gas, or go through a drive-thru near OAK. I'm serious. Despite all this, I still consider OAK my home airport. It's small and generally pretty efficient. The security lines can take forever, but if you're willing to walk in the terminals, you can actually do security in either terminal and then go to the other. Terminal 2 is usually busier, so doing security at Terminal 1 can save time. The food has gotten worse and more expensive, but it also changes a lot, and there have been places here I have really liked. My most recent experience notwithstanding, it's normally pretty fast getting from your plane to baggage claim to BART. If you do check bags, be aware that 90 percent of the time, they use a different luggage carousel than they say they will. The good news is there are only three in Terminal 2, so it's easy enough to go from one to another. Oh, and the long-term parking is fairly cheap, and it's a very short shuttle ride from the lot (with covered but shelters for the stops) to the terminals. Southwest is now a pretty horrible airline, but if you're going to fly it, it has many more domestic destinations from OAK than it does from SFO. When I'm flight to SoCal, LAX is my only real option from SFO. From OAK, I can fly to LAX, Burbank, Orange County, Long Beach, and Ontario. The flight to and from LAX are also generally a bit cheaper than their SFO counterparts, although this can and often does change seasonally.

Should I have registered the card I bought last night? Well, I couldn't because trying to use the Clipper site this week has been next to impossible with the litany of glitches it's experiencing. Even so, I shouldn't have to register a transit card to use it on public transit. If I can prove where and when I bought the card and I *have the actual card*, no one else ought to be able to register the card! But that's what happened and Clipper told me I they couldn't (wouldn't) do anything about it when I informed them of the situation. The customer service person was nice enough, but nice customer service reps can't make up for bad policy and glitchy systems.

I was told before that they've had major problems (i.e. not reading the card properly, getting de-magnetized, etc.). I also thought that I wouldn't be able to purchase the high-value tickets. However, I was convinced by Maria D. (http://www.yelp.com/user_details?userid=7EXWwja2wdSYiCqhR3cTqQ) to finally sign up. I haven't had any problems with it so "those" people were wrong. I find it very convient and it saves constantly buying tickets. It's great for the everyday commuter or even the occassional rider. Now that they have the parking feature, it's even more of time-saver. You don't need to remember your parking stall number, and you have a better chance of catching the train rather than waiting in line to pay $1 for parking during the morning rush. I've missed several trains because of that. The best part is that it auto-loads your card (similar to Fastrak) and you can still purchase the discounted high-value fares. Once it hit below $10, it loads $48 of BART value but only costs you $45.00. I am definitely happy with my card and much thanks to Maria D.! TIP: The parking feature is deducted SEPARATELY from your BART fare. Once parking hits below $10, it auto-loads $40. Also, there's a ONE-TIME fee of $5 for the card and $2 for the parking tag. Your intial costs will be: $45 - EZ Rider card $5 - card fee $40 - parking $2 - parking tag fee ------------------------------ $92.00 total

No, they don't strap a transponder to your forehead, they give you a card that is the size of a credit card, embedded with some kind of smartcard/microchip thingy. On every entry gate, there is a little round pad , that you swipe the card over when you walk through. When you sign up for the program (currently a pilot program) you give them your credit card number, and they preload $48. Every time you make a trip, it deducts the fare from your balance. Once your balance falls below $10, they automatically top off your card. I've been using this for a week now with great success. People must think I'm crazy, magically swiping my hand over the gate and it opens.... maybe I should start shouting "Open, Sesame" as I walk through and really freak people out! If you use BART everyday, then I recommend signing up. Its a no hassle way to travel. No more lining up to get a new ticket, or having to beg for change to use the Add Fare machine.
