Ned Clyde helped us in the early 80s (when it was still Ned!), and this family run business helped us a few years ago, and yet again this year to correct minor settling of our 4,000 sq ft home on a hillside in Danville. They are not "in and out" workers, but stayed until the job was completely done, including a thorough job of clean up, making the landscape and drainage disrupted as proper as possible. Please use extreme caution with anything Ned Clyde presents in an inspection if you are a homebuyer. As homebuyers, we have seen his work in foundation inspections multiple times and have been appalled by his lack of attention to detail and dishonest work. On one home inspection, he missed a 14 foot horizontal crack in the foundation, something that even non experts were aware of. Luckily we had a second opinion that noticed it and provided an accurate inspection. Another time, he said the foundation was needing no attention even though it had significant issues and needed a ton of repair work. It seems to me that sellers' agents use this company to downplay or ignore any foundation issues in a home. Please be ware of any inspections done by Ned Clyde! read more

Very unprofessional, didnt seem like she wanted to take the call, kept saying my company don't do repairs only foundation. I then explained that, that's what I'm looking for foundation work. She then asked me then why didn't my insurance send someone out and that they usually don't deal with insurance companies. This company came highly recommended by a friend who had foundation work done by them. My honey contacted them and Myron was at our home bright and early the next day. Thankfully, he determined that while we have some slight floor sloping, it is not due to any major foundation issues, and at this point it is mostly cosmetic fixes, if we want to go that route. He said our foundation is actually in pretty good shape considering other houses in the area. He was super nice and answered all questions. I was relieved that he helped us to rule out any major underlying issues before we proceed on other home improvements. While I hope to not need them anytime soon, we would not hesitate to contact them if we do need any structural work done in the future. read more

Ned Clyde was recommended by my plumber when I mentioned some cracking in my walls and some foundation concerns. He used to work for them and advised that they don't cut corners and do the job right. I spoke to Myron on the phone for over 30 minutes about my concerns and I could tell that he's seen it all and was pretty open and honest about his perspective. He came on site to check out my property and spent a generous amount of time walking my property, checking out the interior and exterior. Although my property could benefit cosmetically with helical anchors, I really appreciated his honesty when he advised that he wasn't concerned about the integrity of my foundation. But because of the soil and drought conditions we have here, cracking and sloping of my floors were not a big cause for concern. He didn't try to pressure me into doing any work that wasn't really necessary. In addition to being honest, he also seemed like a really nice guy with interesting stories to tell. read more

I contacted Ned Clyde Construction after the January 2023 storms created water incursion into my home. Jon came out and assessed the situation. I received a detailed estimate. I was also able to contact customers who'd had similar issued repaired. They all had high praise for the repairs done. I am now in that place. The crew [forgive me for not taking names!] was professional, tidy and courteous. They answered my questions and left the site clean and neat every day. In short, the job was to dig a trench along the side of my house, place french drains for groundwater, drains for two new surface drains then rock it in. They connected the downspout to the drain which crosses the lawn to another drain that goes to the street. The pavers they lifted got replaced much nicer than before. They handled the lawn carefully. I did have to wait 10 months but the area was sandbagged. These folks are amazing. I would call them back anytime! read more

I contacted Ned Clyde Construction for foundation repair. Actually I have known of them for quite a while because of other neighbors that have used them for the same thing. I wanted a local company and this one is family owned. John, Terry, and office staff are very responsive and are just nice people. I finally picked up the phone to arrange an inspection and John came out the following day. Because of pandemic, they were scheduling work 3 months out. On the appointed day the crew got right to work at 8am. Very organized, very neat and clean work site. Very respectful of moving things with care. Yes, a lot of noise. Hard to avoid when using jackhammers. Took a month. I am very pleased with the work. So happy to have level floors again. Yes, there are many choices for foundation repair, but this company is one you should consider because of their experience and service. read more

I hired Ned Clyde construction recently to help raise the back corner of an apartment building that I owned in San Leandro. It had come to light, during some research on the building, that Ned Clyde Construction, had done some underpinning work on the building about 22 years earlier. I took a chance and called to see if they were still in business. Not only were they still in business, but they located my job file from 22 years earlier in about 5 minutes. My job was complicated by the fact that I wanted to also do some seismic upgrades that Ned Clyde doesn't perform any longer. So we had to coordinate their work with another contractor, that was to come in after they finished their share. We could not pursue the work as planned due to some unknown factors at the time. However, they were able to adjust and achieve the desired goals anyway. They did what they said they would for the cost that they quoted, even thought there was a major change of course in the middle of the project. I would hire them again Thanks Tom F. We were in a bit of a pinch when we were getting ready to install hardwood floors in our recently purchased home. The carpets were removed and revealed severe sloping and bulging in many areas. We called and spoke to Myron who was able to fit us in for a foundation inspection within a couple of days. Talk about a review long over due!!! I just happened to see Ned Clyde Construction while looking for a plumber. NCC did work for me a LONG time ago, I think it was in 1984 during the heavy rains. I had a mudslide at my Berkeley house. They were certainly experts in their field back then and I can imagine they only got better. They handled all aspects of the work from clean up of the mudslide, engineering and reconstructing our deck and repairing other damage. I would highly recommend them. read more

After waiting months to get a city permit during Covid, Ned Clyde construction started the foundation repair of my house. They send a structural engineer out to get the plans started. We have nothing but good things to say about this company. They will bend over backwards making everything right for you. We just used this company to repair our foundation (underpinning/leveling). We were very nervous about this undertaking because this is our home and we want everything to be perfect. Jon Hagen is 100% responsive to every concern. He answered all of our questions along the way and never hesitated to come right over whenever we called. He provided solutions for multiple issues that we needed to address (the foundation is really just the beginning with this old house). Did my foundation. These guys know foundations (and drainage systems and retaining walls...) The "salesman" is actually a structural engineer. You will feel very confident about the scope of work they will do and you'll feel even more confident when the building inspector passes you with flying colors. This is a great company. They are completely professional all the way through the entire process. I needed to have an old drainage system re-vamped and they did a great job. They listened carefully to what I needed and invented a new catch basin for my system. They called me back quickly from my original contact and showed up on time for every interaction. We asked for a solution to our slab foundation which sinked during the drought to such an extent that we could not operate the sliding French doors to the back yard. From the very beginning we were amazed at the responsiveness and prompt return phone calls. The company had a file from our property for work done 30 something years ago for the prior owners. Myron designed a simple solution that underpinned the corners and stabilized the foundation. The team that worked on the job were orderly and efficient as far as I could tell. They finished the job as they promised. They pulled the permit and managed the inspector appointments. They worked on the door tracks so that the sliding door worked and locked perfectly. We had a somewhat tricky project that required underpinning and leveling a sunroom that had sunk and shifted. It used to be a porch and a previous owner built the room onto the porch slab. We started with an independent engineer who recommended several components that should be part of the work, including 6 piers inserted down to bedrock, reinforcement of the slab and filling the void. The first company who bid came in considerably lower, but the work did not include all of these components. Additionally, the "estimator" was not able to answer many questions we had. I got the impression that they were a one trick pony sort of operation. The contractor for the second company did not even bring a tape measure to look at the job. He spent very little time evaluating the issue and insulted the room along the way, suggesting the best course of action was to "Tear it down and start over." He nicely tried to save us money (since not worth it to fix this funky little room, after all), by suggesting we could get away with fewer supports and going down just 5 feet, even if the soil was still moving at that level. And with that attitude and those shortcuts, his bid was only a little less than Ned Clyde's. And then along comes Jon from Ned Clyde. He is an engineer, and spent a good amount of time thoroughly evaluating the situation. He was smart, polite, friendly, and clearly knew his business. His proposal included everything our original engineer recommended, plus additional structural support. The original estimate was not free, but was credited back upon completion of the job. The work crew was also great. They showed up on time every day, worked very hard, were polite, did excellent work and cleaned up after themselves. Time will tell if our room stays put, but from the appearance of the new, incredible looking support, it won't be going anywhere. We were doing inspections for a home purchase in San Francisco, and were concerned the home might need a new foundation, as it was brick, and the brick did not appear to be in good condition. Paul Brown, a licensed civil engineer from Ned Clyde Construction, did a Foundation Evaluation and provided a written cost estimate. He was very professional, on time for the inspection, and provided the estimate in a very timely manner. The estimate was thorough and provided a dollar amount for negotiating the price lower. If your house has foundation problems, I highly recommend getting a Foundation Evaluation from Ned Clyde Construction. This could be very effective in proving a case for a price reduction in a home, so that you can spend the money to get the foundation replaced. You don't want to live in a home that could easily collapse when the earth starts shaking, just because you can't afford the foundation work. Ned Clyde repaired the creek bank three years ago on a house we owned in Martinez. The repair job ran into complications with environmental agencies, the Army Corp of Engineers, the city of Martinez and a and a very difficult neighbor. it took about eight months to work through all the bureaucracies. Myron even showed up at a Martinez city council meeting to help get the final approval on the job. They did a great job repairing the creek and everything is holding up fine. I think any other company would have dropped us like a hot rock before going through all this trouble. ALSO, they stood by the price of the original estimate. They also did earthquake retrofitting on the same house some years earlier and did a great job. A very high integrity company. read more

We did some major reconstruction on our house and used Ned Clyde for a large concrete retaining wall. They installed an amazing wall but our problem was in the drainage pipe that they also did as part of the wall. The pipe collapsed and does not function. When we contacted Ned Clyde after spending $30,000 on this project they pretty much blew us off and did not want to be bothered. Perhaps it was the individual I spoke with but from this experience I would definitely not use them again and do not recommend them . Now we have to spend another fortune on someone else fixing their mess. read more

Ned Clyde installed drainage on my property ALMOST 10 YEARS AGO. A couple of questions about the installation came up for me recently, and it is almost hard to believe how quick and helpful a response I got. Their receptionist was warm and patient, having to look up very old records, and their engineer John managed a visit to look at the problem the same day I called. Though I did need some explanations and advice, I had been mistaken about a problem I thought existed. In spite of that, John looked at the installation carefully, gave me advice, and didn't express any exasperation, as he might well have, having added a rushed stop to his schedule for a nonexistent problem. We have a hillside home in Belmont that was falling down the hill. We spoke with about a dozen different companies; only three or four of them seemed capable of actually doing the work. Based on our research and gut, we went with Ned Clyde Construction. We were not disappointed. Their core team of workers was here every day for six months. They weren't disruptive, they did excellent work, they cleaned up every day, and we didn't have to move out of the house. We were warned by friends that some shadier companies start with a low price and keep hitting you with change orders. The handful of change orders were clearly new work, reasonable, and were agreed upon before they started. If you have a challenging project, I highly recommend Ned Clyde. read more

We had a French Drain installed at our home in El Sobrante. Myron Hagen , the president of Ned Clyde Construction and a structural engineer, came out to give us the bid, which was exactly what was charged (i.e., no "unforeseen" expenses). I have about two minute's worth of experience with construction, but I'm also little bit, uh, controlling and so I wanted to do a drawing that specified exactly where the surface drains would be as well as pipe diameter, etc. Myron was really kind and patient about talking to me and answering my emails (I do know how to take advice) so I'm pretty sure that what I drew was what they were going to do anyway. John from Ned Clyde came out to me home in the Berkeley Hills. This home is right next to the Hayward Fault, it has several 5'+ retaining walls that have failed and are leaning out by a lot. The foundation is old old old. The house is 100 years old. Stuff is just screwy. I'm nervous. Several home inspectors and engineers have tried to scare me senseless but John came in and was very reasoned and experienced and was super helpful. He saved me $10,000s! For example, one engineer said that a retaining wall needed to be replaced entirely. John said it may have moved out 30 years ago so I should get a level and measure it now and check again in 6 months. If it's moving then call him back. If it's not moving then just water my bougainvillea and hide the wall a bit. My kind of recommendation! I'm planning to work with them for some minor foundation repairs now. The small fee for an initial assessment is the best money I've spent on my home. read more

Buyer beware!!!The Engineer came out, we discussed the work, all seemed good. Work crews were good. A year later, big problem. The floor is once again unlevel, walls are again cracking, pulling, stressing. I'd been assured that the underpinnnng would prevent this from reoccuring. Now several years later, 5 visits later, I'm told it does not prevent the floor or the walls from moving. Should have not spent $18,000.00 and put in a $500.00 shear wall. Ned Clyde now states that the solution does not solve movement and not what they said. Be sure you get what you paid for! If you're worried about your house falling down, this is a good solution. If you want level floors, and solid walls without cracks, not the solution. read more

I was in the process of purchasing a Lafayette home that had some visible cracks in the foundation. My home inspector referred Ned Clyde as a structural engineer to take a closer look. When the Ned Clyde engineer showed up he quickly looked at the cracks with a flashlight and said "meh... probably OK, looks like it's been this way for 50 years". Then he proceeded to collect his $350!! WTF? No measurements, no past soil studies from the property, he didn't even look on both sides of the foundation. This was my first home purchase, so maybe I was a bit naive about what this "inspection" would provide. The house had definitely settled to one side. So I expected (for a $350 inspection) a structural engineer would at least tell me WHY the house had settled, and IF it was going to continue to settle or perhaps topple down the hill!? When I asked about retaining walls in the back of the house, he said to call the office for estimates. Wasn't HE the engineer?? When he left he didn't even provide me with so much as a report of his findings. I had to call the office and ask that one be sent to me. Needless to say I felt a bit ripped off, (and annoyed by this guy's smug attitude). Perhaps Ned Clyde does great construction work, but I'll never know since their "inspection" guarantees I'll go elsewhere. Wish I'd spent that $350 on paint. read more

Ned Clyde Construction was hired to look at a crack in a foundation at a house that was in escrow. He came out and said that the foundation was sound and the house was level and then looked at a picture of the crack and did a complete turnaround. He didn't even look at the crack or crawl under the house. He told the potential buyer that this would follow the house around forever and that it couldn't be patched. He said the entire front of the house needed to be dug out and a new foundation poured. All of this without even looking at the foundation!!!!! We hired another contractor to do an inspection. He actually crawled under the house, drilled the foundation and found that the cracks were not serious and that the foundation was sound. His repair is $900. I would be careful when hiring this company. read more

I just had Paul Brown, one of Ned Clyde Construction's engineers, do an inspection of our home. We had been told by another company that our house needed to have some pretty significant underpinning work done to firm up our bouncy subfloors, to the tune of $8000. Paul came over, measured the whole house (and I mean the whole house) to see how out of level various places were, and determined, after about 20 minutes of taking measurements, that our home was fine. The subfloor was supposed to have a little bounce in it, and structurally we were safe/fine! He said, "Although I'd love to tell you that you need a $25k foundation lift, or even an underpin pier installed, you don't. You don't need any work done." He took another 20 minutes to explain why we DIDN'T need the work done, then waived the fee for the appt. So Paul charged us nothing for an hour's worth of work and explanation that we paid absolutely nothing for, when we thought we needed to pay thousands for the job! Needless to say, my wife and I are huge fans of this company. They won't try to sell you work you don't need, and in my mind, that's the biggest sign of integrity a business can possess. His last line: "Take my card and give it to someone who actually needs the work done, and we'll take care of them." Love these guys, and we never even had to use them! read more

I bought an old house recently. After moving in I found there is a slope on the floor at the right rear part of the house and some cracks on the interior and exterior wall at that side. I am very worried. I have many questions such as how severe is this settlement, what causes it, is this settlement still going on, is the house's foundation and structure good or not, etc. Equally important, I want to know if there are similar or other structure problems on the other parts of the house. So I called Ned Clyde for a structure inspection. Myron (their president) showed up at our scheduled time. He basically asked me what is the problem, let me lead him to the place showing signs of settlement, and then used a floor level equipment to measure the levels of the four corners of that room, and then that is it! The entire process took no more than 15mins. He did not go into the crawlspace or attic. He even did not bother to look at other part of my house, inside and outside. I tried to ask him some questions, but his answer was vaguer and did not help a lot either. All he did was using the level equipment to confirm the settlement which I already knew. He left my house in 15mins with $350 inspection fee. Around a week after the appointment, he sent me an "inspection" report which basically is just a quote for re-leveling the part of house. Later I had a contractor coming in for a free estimation of some other work. After I knew he happened to be a structure engineer. I talked with him about the settlement. He went into both the crawlspace and the attic, and explain to me what he observed and thought, without charging me anything. BTW, I don't even want to mention that Myron forgot his level equipment in my house which was only thing he brought with him (he picked it up in the next day), and he mentioned twice if I can provide him lunch since our appointment is at 11am (maybe it was just a joke, but it was not funny neither professional). Stay away with them. Very unprofessional! read more

They built a 150-foot retaining wall at my house - four guys full time for 6 weeks. Over and over, they exceeded my expectations: on time, neat, responsive to fine-tuning requests, quality work, no change orders, friendly, smart, adept with the permit system.
