I found Nealey Tire & Auto online when I needed to get my car inspected for the Maryland State Inspection, and I'm so glad I did! Booking an appointment was easy--you can do it online or by phone. I went the old-school route and called in. I appreciated that they sent a helpful text reminder the day before my appointment. Danielle, who greeted me at the front desk, was lovely--she answered all of my questions and made the process stress-free. Although I couldn't get the necessary repairs done that same day, due to personal reasons. They had no trouble scheduling my follow-up visit. When they explained what my car needed, the team was clear and informative. The lead mechanic who did the inspection and repair work did an excellent job. On my second visit, there was a different person at the front desk, and he was just as friendly and helpful. Both he and the mechanic made sure I left with all the correct paperwork. Last month I was in for my oil changed, since my vehicle has reached 100,000 miles I asked them to check my brakes. I was informed not only did I need brakes, but I also needed rotors. They showed me a picture of my brakes and how they worn they are. Coincidence is they showed NO pictures of the rotors. They attached a total repair order which stated front brakes and rotors needed as well a the rear, estimate was $1200 and would take up to 6 hours to do. I paid my brother-in-law to do the same repairs it took him just shy of 4 hours for $890. He was quick to call me during his work on my car to tell me no way did I need front rotors they were in perfectly good condition. When I went in person to confront the technician who did my assessment I was it is STANDARD practice for them to put rotors on the front. Standard for who? Your pocket not mine. I'm confident based on their response they would have replaced them anyway, whether I needed it or not. Very disappointed in NEALEY's because I've been going there for years with my vehicles. To me that's fraudulent negligence. Lesson learned, sorry for your dishonesty you just lost a faithful customer. Maybe they did this because I'm a single female I don't know, but it certainly woke me up about them. Trust is very hard to gain back. read more

I brought my Dodge Ram in because it threw a code for a misfire in the third cylinder. Nealey advised me to replace my spark plugs and coils, which I did at a cost of $2600. A few days later I got the same code, I brought it back and they said now that they are really looking at it I needed a new engine, and they charged me $950 for that diagnosis. If they had diagnosed it correctly to start, I would never have done the original work. I left there and took it to another mechanic for a second look. The truck ran incredibly rough and the check engine light was blinking. I made it to the second shop who said Nealey didn't reconnect the wires to the coils and that's why it barely made it down the road. I contacted AJ Nealey by mail, then online at his website and with his service follow up surveys and he has never contacted me to discuss the issues. We are out $3500 with no resolution. I would never recommend this business and I don't think they stand behind their service. read more

I live around the corner from Challenger Auto Truck. Jeff (owner) picked up my car while I was out of town to do a 120k mile checkup. The technician was very thorough and honest in his evaluation. They did all the necessary work and returned my car to my house!! Another day I had hit a curb and thought I had some damage to my car. They said to stop by and they checked it mostly for safety and said it was fine. I appreciated the peace of mind and the honesty.!! Lastly, I had an old F150 I was selling, they did a thorough analysis and gave me a report of what needed to be done. I had them put a new battery in then the new owner picked it up (I was out of town) Challenger took the tags back to DMV for me. Challenger Auto & Truck Service has done outstanding work for me several times. They not only diagnose any problem, but they follow up to make sure the problem is completely resolved. They do not push for extraneous work to be done. They just fix what needs fixed but do go over your vehicle to make sure they are not other things that need attention. Robert at Challenger, is an outstanding technician. He does great research. Our problem was looked at by 3 other auto repair shops and they all were not able to correct it though they did take a shot at trying. Robert diagnosed and fixed the problem. It did take a couple of things but he had us see if the problem was resolved after doing the most likely repair. This made the problem intermittent. He did more research and when we went back, the additional repair seems to have fixed the issue. Cars these days are very complex and he was very diligent at taking care of us. read more

Could be true but that does not justify breaking my car and telling me to go to a dealer to get it fixed. I was referred to Challenger Auto from a local business down the street. I am new to the area and was looking for a trusted mechanic close to my house, and I got the exact opposite. I walked in to inquire about a Maryland State Inspection and installation of two front headlight housings which I was providing. I was greeted by the owner Jeff, who I felt at the time seemed like a honest trustworthy guy. I would find out later that was not the case at all. There was only a few hours left in the work day so we agreed I would leave the car overnight and whatever he couldn't finish that night, he would finish the next morning and call me regarding the inspection. Well, the next day had rolled by and it was already 4:00 PM and I still had not heard from him. I called Challenger and Jeff answered saying that he had not finished yet and they were working on it as we spoke. Jeff also informed me that he inspected my vehicle himself, and that my vehicle had failed. He explained that the reasons the vehicle failed inspection were due to a bad wheel front right wheel bearing and a leaking power steering line amongst other minor things such as light bulbs, and windshield wipers etc.I had reminded him that I needed the car by the end of the day because my wife needed the car for a doctors appointment. His exact words were " WELL.. I GUESS IM STAYING LATE TONIGHT", and hung up the phone. I immediately made my way over there and spoke with a staff member who throughout the whole process remained professional and courteous. I asked for Jeff and was told he left for the day, so I guess he wasn't staying late after all or he was trying to avoid me. I waited for about an hour until they finished up and I paid my bill. I'm not writing this to dispute his prices, but I will tell you he had no problem ripping me off. When it came time to ask for the estimate for the repairs needed to pass inspection, there was nothing prepared for me. I left that day feeling like something was off. I ended up taking my vehicle to another certified mechanic who is not certified by the state of Maryland to conduct inspections, but can offer trusted advice about my vehicle. I left the car with him over night and he did a thorough check on the vehicle without finding ANY issues with the wheel bearing or the power steering line. I contacted the Maryland State Inspector assigned to Challenger Auto who is in charge of handling complaints with respect to failed inspections. We set an appointment to meet, and he would inspect the car himself and make the final call. Although I won't name the inspector, I will tell you he was extremely professional and knowledgeable about his work. It didn't take long at all for him to realize there was NOTHING wrong with both power steering line (NO LEAKS) and the wheel bearing. Jeff was told to issue my certificate and I was able to move on. If you ask me I will say he lied, if you ask him he might say it was a mistake. Either way there's two reasons I made the decision to make this public. 1.) Jeff called me to confirm the re-inspection and did NOTHING to try and rectify or mitigate the issue. 2.) Jeff did not show up to the re-inspection, nor did he call me following the decision of the inspector to pass my vehicle. I think he owed me a phone call at least. I have plenty of family and friends who own businesses and they all say the same thing, "this is not how you conduct business." I will NEVER recommend this place, and this is the exact reason why the average person has a hard time trusting mechanics. read more

I have never written a review but felt I should because of the incredible service I was given yesterday. I called yesterday midday to ask if they would be able to check a possible crack in the bushing of the control arm that had been reported by a Lexus dealer almost a year ago. I explained that we were leaving Sunday on a trip and wanted to make sure the car was safe to drive. They said they were very sorry but were too busy and couldn't see me until Monday which I totally understood since I was calling so last minute. I hung up and within a minute was called back and said if I could come in at 3:30 they would check it. I did, they took care of me right away and everything was fine with the car and I was not charged a penny. I have not been a customer before and I could not believe they did that. Horrible. Shame on them. They are by far the worst place to take a vehicle to. We've taken two there, and both times they wanted to add more work than was asked to be done. Oh, here's their motto "We are into safety." Well, as that is highly regarded and wonderful, it is all money to them. Best part, they will keep your vehicle for over a week before they even look at it. They will tell you things like "oh, we had someone out sick," or "You are next in line to be looked at," better yet, "Oh, Jeff will call you tonight," which, of course, never comes. I scheduled an appointment for 11am on Friday the 18th of May. I came in for an oil change and to check my a/c I was waiting there from 10:50am until about 2:10pm - I had to ask how much longer until my car was ready. I was told that they checked the a/c compressor and it was bad along with 10 other things they found wrong with my car. They told me to bring my car back to get a new a/c compressor installed and tire end rods (these were essential) which I was completely ok with. I then took my car in Monday the 21st of May around 7-8am - I didn't hear anything until around 6pm that same night from the manager Tony who told me he ordered a new sensor switch for my car because my car needed it and he didn't think I'd say no. I was told they he wasn't sure if they missed it or if it was just faulty all along and the parts/labor cost would be about $700-800 dollars. So now I'm paying $1300 which was the price given to me Friday to now being charged over $2000 - oh but he's giving me $200 off because they will need to keep my car for a few more days. I immediately hung up and called my parents and a good friend of mine who works as a mechanic at a dealership to explain this issue to me. If I am bring my car into your store and trusting you to make sure you see all the problems with my car first and then give me a price I SHOULD NOT be called days later to say YOU missed something but I'm going to have to pay for it?? That's not the way it works. At the end of the day I told them not to do anything else to my car and I'll pick it up. I received a call the morning of picking my car up that they would install the sensor free of charge because they messed up. I really did appreciate that but the whole thing could've been resolved sooner and with a lot less stress if they would've properly checked my car and made sure they knew what they were doing instead of seeing dollar signs first and trying to nickel and dime me because all they see is this young 24 year old girl who won't know any better. read more

I had a great experience here. The staff are very accommodating and customer service oriented. I have never heard of a repair shop giving you a loaner vehicle for free. Here they did just that. They kept me well informed of everything that was going on as well as the cost of the repairs. (Btw, It was a little less then the quoted price). My vehicle has seen it's fair share of mechanics over the past few years and none were able to fix the problem. Challenger took there time and finally fixed my vehicle correctly. When you first walk into the waiting room, it looks more like a clean, inviting & comfy living room. I was greeted by a mechanic, whos personality & smile were just as nice as he is nice looking. Lol a little bit of eye candy ladies. While they were finding the slow leak in my tire, i asked them to check my air filter to see if i could go a little bit longer before changing it because $ is tight right now. (another shop said i needed one) & to check my headlight because it had been working only some of the time. Most shops would have taken advantage of this opp to get me for some extra $. Not only did they plug my tire, but they also let me know that the last shop lied about needing a filter. They also told me that a piece in my wire harness for my headlight was melted. Instead of quoting me for the entire wire harness, they are in the process of finding just the piece thats melted, to save me some $!!! They TRULY have earned a customer for life!!! My vehicle was there almost two weeks. Kept getting excuses why it was taking so long such as employees calling out sick. Kept getting told to call back the next day. Weird to see the low rating for this place, every mechanic I've talked to here seems knowledgeable, customer service is on point, and they are fair on pricing. One thing they definitely don't do is run up a list of repairs and try to get money out of you. If you show up ask them to look over your vehicle, pretty much everything they tell you is going to be accurate. Polite people, but I definitely won't go back. Being in the military, I always have to find a new mechanic when I move, and it can be frustrating at times, but that's the life. Definitely run into those that like to take advantage of military and other non-locals. What I learned from this experience was to not just go to the first guy that pops up on Google. Anyways, after a day they told me my truck was next in line to be looked at. 24 hours later I called to inquire, and it was 3rd in line. I was told they made a mistake, but who knows for sure if it was accidental. Owner did apologize for the mixup and complete lack of communication, so I decided to give them another shot. Quote came out to around $500 for two ignition coils. Seemed high so I called several mechanic friends that aren't local. In their words the estimate was "criminally high", and they told me to run and never look back. I told Challenger not to do the work, so I took it to another guy the same day who did it in 20 minutes and charged me $100 ($80 for the coils, $20 for labor). That was less than Challenger's diagnostic fee ($150). Basically I paid $150 for them to take 3 days to tell me the same thing I learned at Auto Zone for free in 30 seconds. I'll be spreading the word to everyone on Fort Meade, and make sure none of my fellow brothers and sisters in arms get taken advantage of by businesses such as these. I've had some great mechanics in the past, so maybe my standards are too high, but I would recommend that people (esp military and other non locals) avoid this place. read more
