I have to give it to the Navy, they have better exchanges than any other military branch. When I married my husband, our first duty station was in Germany and they only had a Post Exchange in Germany, obviously army, since we were on an army post, but then, when we moved here, my eyes opened up! Since then, we've moved to HI (where they have one of the biggest Navy Exchanges in the world, including the one in Norfolk too). We missed them for a few years in Savannah and here we are back again. The Navy Exchange does a better job at diversifying their brand offerings (and ones that people will know and appreciate) and for far better prices. They also have the best sales. When stuff goes on clearance, they'll start marking things down slowly but significantly. You can end up with things at 75% off the last ticketed price! If you can be patient, you'll score big, providing that it hasn't been snatched up first haha. We live about equal distance to both Little Creek and Oceana. The Oceana one is not actually on a base. It stands alone outside of the base. Things to note: - you will need to present military ID before starting the transaction. This is verified every single time. - sign up for their rewards. You get points for every $X spent. They rack up pretty fast. And they give you e-gift cards via email. I get them frequently. - this Navy Exchange has three separate components with the main building broken down into further components. There is a separate, detached package store and a gas station. - once you're in the main building, there is a home and garden section, a barber, convenience store, jewelry shop with cosmetics/home goods/electronics/toys on one side, separated by a food court and then the other side has all the clothing, handbags, perfumes and uniform store. Once you're in the main building, it's considered one big store, so you can take items that you haven't paid for from the home goods side in through the food court to get to the clothing part, if that makes sense. I felt weird the first few times I did this LOL. But it's all good. They have cash registers at both ends. - Food court has Wendy's, Panda Express, Subway, Auntie Anne's (that I can remember). Grateful to have this benefit available for service members and their families! Ir's definitely made it a bit more affordable especially duty stations outside of the continental US. Dropped by to fuel up prior to going home. The gas station was clean and I had zero complaints. It was less than $3.30/gal for regular gas. I paid less than $10 to fill up a little more than 1/3 tank. Something impossible to get nowadays in my area near DC/MD. The location is right off of NAS Oceana making it very convenient. It also has a car wash on site and it'll give you 20 cents off if you get gas and car wash together. I don't see why you shouldn't go if you're nearby with patron privilege. read more

You can't go wrong with navy exchange prices. It's tax free and you can price match items. The only thing I don't like about this exchange is that they separate the main exchange from the clothing exchange so I have to walk in between the kiosks, gift store and food court just to get to the other end of the military "mall." The other end of the exchange has the shoe department and clothing. I wish they had thought the layout through because the set up is so inconvenient. I have to go from the main exchange to purchase one item then go to the other end of the exchange to buy apparel. It limits other customers to buy everything all at once. I also hate that the commissary is another drive away from the exchange. unlike most bases they typically have them close together or connected within walking distance. It my time in the Air Force and being a navy brat I have been to many exchanges, AAFES, BX but this one is small. I typically would go to Norfolk naval station NEX and little creek exchange because it's bigger and the setup isn't so inconvenient. The good part is that they have the packaging store (shopette to get our alcoholic beverages) which is closely connected. It's the only best convenience of this location. read more

Meh. It is just another NEX. There is nothing special about this one. They constantly change the food places inside and the people are a little less rude at this one than the bigger one located in Norfolk. I personally try to avoid them all together because of the crazy 'i think I am getting a deal because it is tax free' people. As a former extreme couponer, I am sorry but these places are nothing special to me. I can go elsewhere to find a great deal that is in my area and not overcrowded with crazies who think they are entitled to their spouses benefits. I do appreciate the ladies who sew the patches on the uniforms, however. They save me so much time from having to do it myself. Honestly though, sewing a patch onto a hat for almost $5 is robbery, but they can do it in under 5 minutes. I can only hand sew things, so I guess it is acceptable for my situation. read more

So... It's your typical NEX but with a weird layout. I say typical because it has everything you need but it's laid out like the mall. You got the Food Court that separates your shopping needs. Clothing, shoes, makeup, USN Uniforms, and accessories are all towards the right. Off to that left is electronics, housewares, toys, appliances, and the gardening/seasonal section. There's also a barber shop, the florist/souvenir shop, optical section, watches and sunglasses kiosk. Of course, I can't forget the Navy Pride shop! Food Court is a little small but I would say it does its job. There you will also find the only bathrooms I know on that whole establishment. Panda Express is ok. Their Orange Chicken is really, really good though!! Then you have your Subway where you can eat fresh and have it your way (whoo hoo)! There's a lil sushi counter and also a smoothie joint. I think there was another "restaurant" set to open but I failed to notice if it was open already. One thing I hate about this NEX is the temperature regulation. It is AWFUL!!! It's just always HOT but most especially in clothing wing. OMG! Wintertime it's blazing hot. Summertime it's blazing hot. Guess they forgot to set that AC flow properly over there. They always have a gazillion electric fans during the summer just blowing hot air around. It's so annoying to shop. It's usually pretty clean and organized here but some stuff are limited quantities as well as selection variation but like I said, it has everything you "need" not particularly "want." For example, you "need" a washer and dryer but they might not have the silver front loaders that you "want." You "need" some Jordan sneaks, but not the ones you (or in my case, my SON!) "want." Catch my drift?? And lastly, being a girly girl, I have to point out how impressed I am of their makeup selection. Over the years they have truly stepped up their game!! Used to just be Clinique, Estee, and Lancôme...but now? OMG! Kind of a mini heaven with Smashbox, Too Faced, Anastasia Beverly Hills, Bobbi Brown, bareMinerals, and Origins. I've been getting my medium fade here for about 8 or 9 years now. It's quick, cheap, and impersonal.. just the way I like it. HA. I will go here for my basic needs and big purchase items because there is no tax. I don't think it's any cheaper than other places, but not paying tax on a thousand dollar computer feels good in all the right places and if you get a coupon in the mail, oh boy. The gas is usually in line with the cheaper places around town, so fill up. This place holds a spot in my cold heart and I will continue to drop my coins here. read more

This is a nice clean store that allows you to get most of your household needs as well as nonperishables. Convenient food court located in the building but the choices were not appealing (Subway, Great steak, panda express, etc). I like coming here to check out the seasonal décor and merchandise. The quality of items are general good. Even better that there's no sales tax. Fair warning: do not think that everything you buy will be the cheapest available. I picked up a few cleaning items on sale here and then went to Wal-mart afterwards and found the same item cheaper (even with the tax calculated in). read more

But as Virginia Beach is very much a military town, I feel that Navy Exchange (NEX) is a necessary and useful review. The compliment to the Commissary, the NEX is a department store available only to armed service members and their dependants. From clothes, jewelry, electronics, home appliances--they have it all here, tax free and CHEAP! Not cheap as in discount prices on old stuff, but cheap as in cheaper than anywhere else for the hottest new stuff. The best bets here are the electronics (flat screen TVs, video game systems, dvds) and home appliances. The only real disappointment here is their women's clothing section. I don't know who the buyer is here, but the brands are sub-par and the selection is less than fashionable. read more

A previous review mentioned the limited food court and ability to get great deals if you are on their circular, all spot on. With a scratcher you can get up to 50% off on items. For the store itself, it is not the largest in the area, but in my opinion it is the most convienant. Parking is easy and have never had to search for a space, additionally there is gas co-located which ups the convenance level. A bit of a walk to the stores, on the right as you are facing the NEX there is the clothing store including uniforms. Everything that you could need, including shoes and sneakers. In the middle is the food court, subway, panda something and cheese steaks with a smoothie place thrown in for good measure. Not the best but ok. Then going to your left jewelry, a local virginia type store with local wines, eye store, tourist stuff, and a hair dresser. I am bald so don't know how good they are, but never see anyone with a bad haircut so must be ok. There is a store with a little everything from TVs to refrigerators. A bit of advice they do price match I believe for everything but TVs. My advice is go to best buy or Walmart, even with the tax break you will get a better deal. Lastly there is a liquor store which is a great deal. They always kick butt on prices for booze. If you are eligible the NEX is the way to go. read more

Yes I am aware that not everyone has the privilege of shopping here, but since this town is flooded with military families, I think it's a legit place to review. If you don't like that or think its unfair, feel free to kiss my ass then become my friend and maybe one day I will take you shopping here so you can review it your own damn self. Anyway. I have mixed feelings about the NEX.. I absolutely hate how the sections are divided. The clothing, shoes, hand bags, perfume, etc. are one one side with a cashier, and the household items, personal and pet care, candles, foods, electronics, cigarettes, you name it, are on the complete other side with different cashiers. These two sections are divided by a food court that has a few fast food options but nothing out of this world. Now I may sound like a bitchy queen right now, having to walk the extra couple hundred feet, present my ID twice and make two separate CC transactions.. but this place really does have everything I need at any time. They DO have a decent selection of clothing and there is an Orange Michael Kors bag I have been eying for about 4 months now. I love the prices they offer on their Yankee candles, usually 25%-75% off. Their household selection is much like something you would see at Target, but for much cheaper. They have a kids section, fine jewelry, appliances, electronics.. its a one stop shop and everything is tax free, obviously. I have been to other Exchanges on different bases and although this one is not my favorite, it gets the job done. I would have just, laid it out much differently. read more

If you have access to any military exchange/PX you can find bargains from time to time. Its more about not having to pay sales tax which is nice when you are buying large ticket items. I am not a huge fan of the Oceana Exchange. I hate how the sections are split. the clothing should not be on the other side of the food court like it is. It truly annoys me. They took out the Taco Bell and pizza place so that sucks. Also, they move things around way too much. Just recently got based in VB. I've already been to the NEX a lot in just the first 2 months. I have to say, I don't know prices that well to be able to tell if I'm getting THE BEST deal possible, but there's something to be said for convenience. I do know enough about prices to know that they are not overpriced. They have 0% interest on appliances and TVs (depending on the promotion they are having). Also for Military there is no sales tax. To me all of that adds up to savings. The fact that everything you could need is all under one roof is very appealing to me. I don't want to go to five different stores to pick up the stuff I need on my weekends off. Here, my wife and I can go, grab lunch, pick up some plants for the back porch, get some clothes for the warmer months, she can satisfy her make-up fixation, I can add electronics to my wishlist and we can grab groceries. It's definitely a perk being able to shop here and we plan on doing most of our shopping here. read more

I really only come here for big investment pieces such as: shoes, jackets, purses. One time they had a deal going on for shoes 20% off. I copped two pairs of Chucks that I still wear today. Although it was a little confusing because the merchandise areas were all split up and it was very unclear on if you were supposed to check out before moving on to the next area. Very disappointed with the price match policy. Would not price match running shoes to the manufacturer, any store that was not local or any store that was out of stock. I went to the NEX because I couldn't get these shoes any where local and would have ended up paying more than $40.00 more. I'm from a Military family. I've seen the NEX grow over the years. The one at Oceana Naval Air Station is awesome! It's a great place to shop. The prices are good. The quality of the products are awesome. There's hardly anything you can't buy there. Great place for make-up. Very nice purse department. I especially like the electronics. There's a food court as well as a jewelry department. I've gotten some very nice sunglasses there. Oceana NEX is great because a lot people tend to go to Norfolk due to the fact that it is bigger. I like coming here because you can always find good stuff that usually go on sale because it is overstock. They have a section that has sneakers and shoes which are on sale. I am drown towards this area because I am a cheap skate. This location is nice and quiet which makes for an easy in and out transaction. The associates are helpful when needed and aren't to busy to help. read more

Purchased a POULAN Gas Trimmer at the Navy Exchange Oceana. Used it for the first time and it ceased working within 15 minutes. Trimmer head stopped spinning. Turned it on and off several times with no result. Returned it to the NEX and they refused to take it back. The reason they stated, that the item exceeded the 30 day return policy. I had the item in my procession for no longer then 2 months and had used it only at that one time. I took it to a repair shop, they serviced it and then they told me to throw it in the trash because the trimmer is a piece of junk. So much for purchasing an item made by POULAN and for purchasing this type of equipment from the NAVY EXCHANGE OCEANA. read more
