We stopped at Natural Chimneys Regional Park during a drive from Baltimore to Nashville. It was a great place to stretch our legs. It's a little bit off the highway we were taking on our drive, but my husband is a bit of a geology nerd and it was well worth the 20 or so minute drive off the highway to check out this cool site. The four "natural chimneys" are 120-feet-tall limestone formations etched out of solid rock over centuries. What's left is a really cool stone formation. There are lots of picnic tables, so you could plan to eat a meal here. We didn't have time to stop for a hike, but we were told there were hiking options by the woman/park ranger who gave us info when we drove into the park. The park is free to enter, so we were able to enjoy a quick visit to the see the main attraction. If you like to include some sites on a road trip, this is a cool one. We enjoyed a quick stop here.

Scale model of the chimneys
Mr B.

While hiking the Appalachian trail this week I got to witness the majesty of one of the seven natural wonders of Augusta County, Virginia. A rock formation which towers over 120 feet tall, dating all the way back to the antediluvian era; the Natural Chimneys of Mount Solon. The reason I appear to be half the height of these ancient geological marvels isn't that I am 6 stories tall, as you might assume, if you are dumb enough to assume I could be 60 feet tall. It's actually because I wasn't able to get a picture with the actual chimneys. Flash photography is prohibited according to my tour guide, so instead I took one with the 1/10th scale model they have in the parking lot. While there, my tour guide taught me that the chimneys are made of stacks sedimentary rock that was carved out of the surrounding mountain by the natural process of erosion, several thousands of years ago, when the flood waters from Noah's great flood receded, after they'd killed every sinner not on the ark. I guess I should note that the guide I had at the chimneys was the local Pentecostal Preacher, Reverend Zebulon McBryde. 'Technically' the reverend isn't an employee of the park, but he likes to give tours pro bono, in order to dispel the propaganda that Satan has posted on wikipedia, which claims that the chimneys are 500 million years old. For what it's worth he also said the reason flash photography wasn't allowed because it would steal the souls from the rocks and that means when they die they won't go to heaven. That being said, I mostly trusted him and the assume information he provided me is true, including about how the park is the home to the oldest jousting tournament in America. However, right before I left, he said that he likes to go out into to the surrounding woods to look for big snakes to handle during his service, and invited me to go with him. From the way he looked at me I hope that isn't some kinda euphemism.

The natural geologic structures were so neat to look at, plus they've got plenty of trails to walk surrounding them. After looking at the chimneys from the bottom, I'd definitely recommend taking the trail that leads you to the top of them so you can see the amazing views of the mountains and surrounding areas. Very cool place to stop off.

The park was clean, well staffed, and lines moved quickly at rides. They had commentary life jackets but only one in adult size which was weird but it worked since only one person in our party wanted one. You don't really need a life packet since most rides have water going up to only about 3 feet My favorite ride was the last river. We spent a long time on our tubes in the lazy river. I also loved all the water slides and was amazed by the availability of 3 person tubes which made us super fun for our party of 3 to ride together. They also have surf lessons included which I wanted to try but they closed the water park 2 hours early with no disclosure of reasons. The hot tubs were great too The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because the tickets cost $63 whether it's only for the indoor park or for the indoor and outdoor park admission. There is no discounted rate during the off season when the outdoor park is not in operation, or at least that's what it seemed from the online website.

This was our first time at an indoor water park, the disappointment was high. We frequent water…read moreparks back home and I say this is a quarter of what you'd get anywhere else. I get they have an outdoor park that makes it bigger but then the park tickets should be cheaper in the off season. Waterpark food, don't even try. It was a huge hassle and really isn't worth the price. I think people in jail get better food. Kid behind the counter was good but they kept messing up our order. More than once. Wasn't the kids fault though. As far as rules go: they don't check bags, I watched many patrons with food and drinks not from the facility (including alcoholic), kids in the adult hot tub BUT the lifeguards did great and honestly it was still a good time, just not 50 dollars a person good. Seems they're adding on, I'm sure this will make a huge difference in the future.

So I opted to not feed the animals. Also the locals told me not to feed the animals. And now that I think about it, they charge you to feed their animals with their own food... but hey, I'm not hating the game... CAPITALISM! So but me not letting my kids pet or feed the animals, I save half on the experience, and then some cause I'm not letting my kids get sick. But man... these animals just swarm your car anyway... almost got mugged by an emu. If I got into a car accident in the safari, would it be a liberty mutual commercial? But I digress... the real question is why is there a picture of a cheetah in their signs. Didn't see any cheetahs. But aside from that... it was an enjoyable drive. Zebras are assholes though...

I did not enjoy the cheeseburger combo meal that was purchased on site. The lemonade was bland, and the burger was dry. The women's restroom is overdue for remodeling. I was excited to see penguins, lemurs, squirrel monkeys, tigers, and a king cheetah at the park. I would not have guessed that VA would house these animals. I was also excited to see the giraffes and rhinoceroses. The park was clean, and there were plenty of wild animals to see. As a bonus, potholes were scarce.

We made it just in time for the 3:30 Bigfoot battle! The kids were able to fill water guns and squirt Bigfoot as he ran around the town. It was a perfect way to cool off during the 90° weather. The town was pretty cool! My son had a blast going from store to store seeing what each room held. We pressed all the buttons and touched all the things! Our favorite part was the dino trail. My husband enjoyed the Civil War statues mixed with the dinosaurs. The kids just loved the dinosaurs and the adventure of it all. The dino maze was cool and my daughter loved the dino dig. The gift shop had some pretty cool shirts and we couldn't leave without getting a stuffed dino and a penny from the machine. A great roadside attraction! Definitely worth stopping and seeing, especially if you have kids/just enjoy weird and entertaining experiences.
