They were gems and showed us where, why and how of the course. Great company for sure. Now I like to think I am a good golfer (hit long off the tee and fairly accurate with a good short game) 11 handicap...Thus course had some major league elevation...Not a poppy Ridge out in Livermore, CA but there were hills. My drives were freaking huge...Regulation was hit in most cases and I even drove two Par 4s...What killed me were the greens...Not only were the fairways elevated so were the greens!!!! It is narrow so if you are a sprayer like my cousin, you will get frustrated. Alas, lack of familiarity of the course did me in and I shot an 89. Keep in mind the slope is a tough 126...Average is 113 in America. Castlewood Country Club in Pleasanton, CA is 131 and is a very hard course and I shot 2 strokes better there; it was the home course of LPGA Pro and Asst. Captain of the Solheim Cup Champion team of 2024. I shot an 87 at Castlewood which is also a tour length course but here ai shot an 89! It is a tough little course but the company was exceptional. Thank you Garland and Mike! Only hit was that the greens were not Maintained well enough but it is winter. I get to knock West Virginia off my list of Places I have golfed...I would like to come back and play this again for sure.

A swimming pool (no swimming in the lake). A gorgeous lake that you can take a boat out on. Trails to hike. Camper's paradise. There were no real campers there when we stopped by, probably because it was late October and it gets pretty cold in WV that time of year. It's pretty "off the beaten path" too. Oh, but what a place to go camping.

Always leaning in favor of the PGA TOUR and golf events my nature is to review favorably. In the…read morecase of The Greenbrier Classic - no brainer. This event is as well-presented as any on Tour. I'll begin by answering your question, "Why not 5-star"? Well, parking can be arduous due to limited capacity at the Greenbrier Resort. It's a park-n-ride situation and because the road to the Greenbrier is one-lane there can be delays to and from the event. And the event is slightly out-of-the-way from major metropolitan areas. Okay. So you have to drive awhile and then park to ride awhile. The slight delay is worth it. With weekly badge buying comes the Greenbrier Concert Series. This year attendees see Luke Bryant, Tim McGraw, the Black Eyed Peas, Keith Urban and Miranda Lambert on 3 consecutive nights. Terrific stuff. Oh! The golf tournament. There is every kind of accessory and compliment for spectators. Food stands, bleachers, bars & pubs, hospitality (if you lucky enough for a feedbag experience) and plenty of great golf. The Old White golf course looks tremendous this year after a redesign of all the greens. New tees have been added so the pros likely won't sniff 59 this year. And then.... the Greenbrier Resort property. Shops, pools, a casino, restaurants. Don't look at the Greenbrier Classic just a PGA TOUR stop. The place is buzzing with excitement and fun. And stating the obvious: THESE GUYS ARE GOOD!

When it comes to PGA Tour events, The Greenbrier Classic, last known as A Military Tribute at The…read moreGreenbrier, was on the lower end of the spectrum, hence my two-star rating. There are/were several better tournaments out there. Don't get me wrong - every PGA Tour tournament is great, but relatively speaking, this was one of the less attractive stops on Tour. On April 16, 2020, The Greenbrier put out a press release stating that they and the Tour mutually agreed to cancel their contract which ran through 2026. Traditionally played over July 4th week, The Greenbrier was moved to September in the 2019-20 season (the season's opening event). Due to the scheduling change and move to the new fall date, "the attractiveness for sponsors and the attendance for the fans dropped significantly" according to Greenbrier PR. This was a short-lived tournament, starting in 2010 and ending in 2019. The tournament's first champion, Stuart Appleby, set the tournament scoring records which were never broken. The tournament's purse increased to $7,500,000 in its final season which was middle of the pack at the time. Not bad. The tournament drew big names, but not at a high volume. Tiger Woods played in the Greenbrier twice: 2012 (cut) and 2015 (T32). Then again, Tiger also played in the Wyndham Championship: https://www.yelp.com/biz/wyndham-championship-greensboro. The Greenbrier skipped two seasons, 2015-16 due to the 2016 West Virginia flood (the course sustained substantial damage and had to close; it reopened in July 2017) and 2018-19 due to the aforementioned rescheduling. The tournament was held on The Greenbrier resort's Old White course which opened in 1914. It's a TPC course. In July 2019, Golf Digest ranked it the second-best TPC course after Sawgrass. High praise. It's one of four courses at the resort. The resort's "Greenbrier" course hosted both the Ryder and Solheim Cups. The tournament was renamed A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier because of the resort's strong ties to the American military. Jim Nantz has mentioned this on telecasts and you can read details about it online -- the resort houses a formerly-classified underground facility that was intended to keep parts of the US government running in times of emergency. This arrangement was in place from 1962 to 1992. During the tournament, members of the US military would be stationed at a certain hole (or certain holes), some tending to the flagsticks. I thought that was a nice touch and made The Greenbrier unique from other Tour stops.

wow! what a terrific ride!…read more At the start, the guide demo'ed and had us try some fundamental riding techniques to make the ride safe and comfortable, and then led us on a 2+ hour trail ride suited to our interests and skill levels. She periodically asked about our comfort levels and what we wanted us to see, while pointing out things about the environment (such as a bear scrape on a tree). The trails were well-maintained, the views gorgeous and -- most importantly -- the horses seem contented, healthy and well cared for. Hoss and Charger were lovely horses and gentle for us beginners to ride. All in all, a fantastic and fun outing and a great way to experience time with beautiful horses in beautiful surroundings.

We discovered it last year by chance taking up a canceled spot with friends on Labor day, and returned this year the week before Memorial day. There is a significant difference between the place when in full capacity - obviously noise, crowd, and jet ski traffic on the lake. Also seems to be in transition from privately operated to state owned - when we visited this year none of the Marina services were operating which forces you to drive back to the nearest WV store for necessities such as ice etc. The facilities (shower, restrooms) were relatively clean (if you don't mind the crawlers, occasional mouse running across) but this was mainly for a lightly occupied camp, as mentioned above and indeed during the labor day weekend they were in much worst condition. So if you are geared for self sufficiency and pick an off time this is one of the most beautiful sites in VA, with an unbeatable cost/benefit ratio for a tranquil and relaxing vacation.

There are about five camp grounds here with each one allowing enough space for ten camping sites. There are camp sites both on and off the water and each site has a fire pit/cooking area. The exterior sites on the water are amazing! You have an incredible view, your own beach area and a lot of privacy. The interior sites are larger close to the bathroom/showers, but don't offer much of a view or privacy, but like I said, they are very spacious. This could have been a five-star review, but the person who runs this camp area was super rude to us one of the nights. Sooo, you're supposed to turn off your generator by 10pm, but ours was still going by 10:30pm and she let us have it! This was our first offense and we didn't know about the curfew. It was a little geek-out golf moment to think we would be teeing off at this historically important hole. We had the opportunity to play 18 holes on the championship Old Course at The Omni Homestead Resort in Hot Springs, Virginia. The golf staff was super friendly and gave us some pointers before sending us off on the high-tech golf cart with GPS and an interactive map of the course. The weather was perfect, although a little gnatty, for our 9 a.m. tee time. The surrounding Allegheny Mountains hug the 6,099 yard course that snakes back and forth through the hills. The 18 holes consist of six par 3s, six par 4s and six par 5. They are not very long holes (relative to other, newer courses we have played) but the geography forces golfers to shoot uphill, downhill, or around sloping hillsides. Mature wooded grounds and beautifully manicured fairways led to challenging greens. We reveled for a moment at the Old Hole #1, knowing how many famous folk, from presidents to great golfers, teed up here. I must not have channelled my inner Sam Snead enough (this was his home course), because I whiffed my first ball into the woods. Oh well, there's no crying in golf. Throughout the round, we were able to play slowly enough to enjoy the beautiful scenery and random wildlife that made an appearance- and to focus on our game. Overall, it was a fun course to play and I appreciated the relatively shorter length of the holes. FACTOID: Sam Snead taught himself to play golf during the Great Depression with golf clubs carved from tree limbs. He caddied at the Old Course from the age of seven 7 and turned pro at 22. We did not get to play The Cascades, but we did stop in to look at the course, which was designed by William Flynn in 1924. It is considered one of the finest mountain courses in the country and ranked among "America's 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses" by Golf Digest. The magnificent topography against the the backdrop of Allegheny Mountains allowed Flynn to design the course masterfully using the natural terrain, The Cascades is regarded as one of Flynn's greatest works. The Omni Homestead Resort is a great place of pilgrimage for any history buff, architecture lover, or golfer. We look forward to another visit to play the Cascades and check out the extensive restoration projects to the main building and other parts of the property, including the mineral water-fed Jefferson Pool.
