Dinosaur Land is a fabulous tourist attraction that could be in a Chevy Chase movie. Life size dinosaur sculptures and a few other creatures fill the forest of this Shenandoah Valley wonder. Joseph Geraci started Dinosaur Land back in 1967. Thirty five of the original dinosaurs were created by James Sidwell, who was famous for his dinosaur replicas at the Field Museum in Chicago. Newer dinosaurs and creatures were crafted by Mark Cline, a local artist. I spoke with Geraci's granddaughter, who works in the gift shop. She explained that her grandfather passed away 40 years ago and her mother now owns the park. Four generations of Geraci's have worked at the park. Admission is $7 for kids under eleven and $9 for all others. Visitors can take photos up close with the dinosaurs and other creatures including a giant octopus. The self-guided tour takes 30-60 minutes. The park is open from March through December. The gift shop is filled with tee shirts, toy dinos, postcards, books, glassware and other souvenirs. We also loved the gift shop and how the employees were knowledgeable on specific dinosaur traits and gave some info about the dinosaurs we loved most. We took our 2 year old here and he had a blast. The park is small and the face on the dinosaurs are little bit creepy but it's still a ton of fun. You can walk up and touch all the dinos but you can't sit on them. It's a cheap price for kids and kids at heart to learn and see dinosaurs. Just a word of advice be cautious when you exit. What can you say about a collection of apparently home-made fiberglass dinosaurs -- and that only costs $5 to get in. Classic reminder of a bygone world of attractions for car tourists away from major highways. Our two-year-old loved it, as did we. My favorite part was the completely incongruous giant model of King Kong, including an outstretched hand for you to sit in for photos. I drove an hour to this location with my very excited two year old and and shortly upon entering this establishment I was greeted by a CONFEDERATE FLAG. It's 2025 we all know what that flag stands for and what it represents. If you're looking for something to do with the kids, have about an hour to kill, and something inexpensive - check out Dinosaur Land. Entry fee was $8/adults, $6/kids over age 2. It's not a huge place and easily walkable. It's shaded with several trees (an allergy sufferers worst nightmare!). The dinosaur/animal statues are old but it's a cute concept and something different for the kids. Be aware - you walk in & out of a gift shop so be prepared to spend a few extra dollars on a crappy souvenir that will end up being lost or tossed. Overall, cute place. read more

We loved it here!!! I felt so lucky that we stayed late in the day (right before closing) and got to meet one of the owners. It was nice to hear her talk about how long Dinosaur Land has been around, and how it's been family owned since the 40's. Some of the statues have seen better days, but I don't think people go to Dinosaur Land to see authentic looking dinosaurs -- it's more like a novelty experience, and a fun spot for little kids to explore. read more

A fun day trip from DC, Dinosaur Land was just plain fun! We visited in June - neither of us dinosaur fans - just interested in visiting and ole' fashioned Roadside Attraction and Dinosaur Land fits the bill. Who knew there were so many dinosaurs? And the signage, short and to the point, explained it all. No animatronics, no gimmicks. This was total fun. We spent over an hour and yes, looks lots of pics. The gift shop was fantastic. Definitely will be coming back. We bundled this with lunch at Poppy's Place in Front Royal and then took a tour at Skyline Caverns. All in all great day trip. read more

This is a highway attraction for families taking trips in their car. If you're on highway 81, it's a great place to let the kids out of the car, stretch their legs, and have fun. It's no longer $5 -- they raised admission to $7 for small kids and $8 for teens and adults. The women who work here are awesome. Friendly and welcoming. The gift shop is a pretty typical highway-side gift shop, but there's a nice science theme to it. The dinosaurs themselves are slightly dilapidated, and can stand some fiberglass repair, but they're still pretty awesome. There's a totally incongruous King Kong right in the center of the park but I consider that a feature rather than a bug. The one thing I really wish they had done differently is created the fiberglass exhibits to scale -- the size of everything is completely wrong (a praying mantis is NOT the same size as a stegosaurus!) but it's still all in good fun. There's a few trees here and there, but there's very little shade, so if it's high 80s / 90s, it's going to be rough for the younger kids. read more

We stopped here on our way home from Shenandoah National Park since my son is obsessed with dinosaurs. This place is comically fun if you go in not expecting much. The replicas are weathered and looked like they've seen better days, but the signs were pretty educational. The experience felt like I was walking through a Dino-fanatic's backyard. We were done in about 10-15 minutes. The entry price is reasonable, gift shop has items to fit every budget, and there were (clean enough) restrooms. read more

I took my two younger grandsons age 6 and 2. They weren't thrilled about being there. Most of the dinosaurs statues were old and some were rusty. Hoboy. How do I describe or rate this place? On the one hand, this is peak roadside Americana. On the other, there isn't much of educational value to the park, which is a major missed opportunity, and the gift shop is chock-full of offensive Native American "costumes," Confederate flags, and pro-Trump keychains. It's honestly kind of surprising that whoever stocks the gift shop actually believes the dinosaurs existed. The place evidently hails from the 1960s, and some of the dinos are starting to show their age. Others seem brand-spanking new and are honestly kind of weird-looking amongst the older guys. It's clear that this was someone's passion project, and I love anyone who leans in to what they love even if it makes them seem strange to those who don't understand. I would say it's still worth the $8 entry fee, and I don't know what I expected of a place off of Stonewall Jackson Highway, if not Confederate support. But I still wish it had less of that nonsense and more dinos in the gift shop, even if just to stay on theme. 10/10 would recommend having engagement photos taken here, especially cupped in King Kong's hand. read more

It goes way back in time - to when we used to make road trips from Michigan down to visit my grandparents in Florida - traveling down the I-95 corridor - and collecting brochures at all the rest areas about all of the road side attractions/tourist traps. The time to visit Dinosaur Land is during warmer weather. The gift shop is winding down for the year - and a number of products are not available as they get ready to button down for the winter. Sure, most of the statues are a little on the worn down side, but this place holds high sentimental value to me. I haven't been here for years, as I'm older now, but I still remember the majority of the statues. I was really into dinosaurs as a kid and I'm sure other kids would enjoy it as much as I did. What can you even say about this place? It has been around since 1963 and seems to get all of the outdoor statues/figures worked on about once a decade. But! This is the kind of roadside attraction that will get kids and adults alike to drop their screens and enjoy some family/friend bonding time. All of the figures are super weird and with all of the pictures you can take, it is bound to provide fodder for inside jokes for years to come. The store itself is a treasure grove of knickknacks, Pennsylvania Dutch candy, and clothing. This place is family owned and they close the entire place from the beginning of January to the beginning of March each year. Dinosaur Land is reasonably priced and ripe for parody, so check it out, if you ever happen to be in the area. read more

I came here as part of my birthday adventure this weekend. I love kitschy roadside attractions and knew this would be right up my alley. It was exactly what I expected. Okay, I'm going to start with the bad to just get it out of the way: The gift shop was really lacking. I wasn't expecting much, but the larger areas had a lot of sculptures and the typical bric-a-brac you may find at a flea market. I'd say the commemorative Trump plates and the large selection of confederate flag paraphernalia was my least favorite part. I saw the confederate crap after we went through the park, or I would have reconsidered supporting the place. I didn't go to the other dinosaur park because of it's civil war theme. I could have skipped this part in my review, but I think its important to share the full experience. I think the shop could benefit from more related items. There were few shirt designs and typical souvenirs, which was kind of a bummer. The good: The dinosaurs and other animals were pretty hilarious. The faces were the best part. If you love roadside Americana attractions, this is definitely for you. It wasn't very crowded and the trees kept the walk pretty cool. The photo opportunities were great! If my review was based solely on the dinosaurs, I would have given it 5 stars. read more

This is high on the list of roadside Atlas Obscura attractions that is a must-see in the Virginia. It's just funky cool. My 7 and 10 yr old loved it. Don't be expecting anything crazy - everything is very 60s! But if you go in with that outlook it's a whole lot of silly fun with great picture opportunities. My girlfriend & I went to Dinosaur Land while staying in Front Royal, VA and had a really fun time. Though obviously targeted towards kids, we (and all the adults there) both enjoyed exploring the place quite a bit. The Dinosaurs appear to be constructed out of paper mache like material, but are very personable in appearance & characteristically designed. The layout of the place is also convenient, easily allowing you to loop around and venture into different areas of the park at will. In terms of overall size, it's not too big-you can view each Dinosaur/description in about 45minutes, but it allows for tons of excellent photo opps (King Kong is great!) The entry price was reasonable (6$ adult / 5$ kids) and the gift shop also has more than enough toys & trinkets to keep you occupied after leaving the park. I also enjoyed the informative descriptions & histories of the different Dinosaurs; You can actually learn, rather than just guess which ones were in Jurassic Park. All in all I'd say this is a surprisingly fun place to visit for adults, and an even better place to bring the young ones! read more

I was in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley for a big wine tasting last year, and I decided to take a drive to see some revolutionary and civil war era stuff. On my way to Front Royal, I spied a large fiberglass dinosaur by the side of the road. next to it was a sign in vaguely Disneyland-esque letters proclaiming that I had arrived at DINOSAUR LAND, "a prehistoric educational forest for children of all ages." Wow. In the late fifties, someone thought it would be a good idea to make a whole bunch of fiberglass dinosaurs (and other strangely non-mesozoic creatures - a large pink octopus? king kong?) and place them in a park-like setting so that tourists would have something to do on their way to other tourist spots. Their website proclaims that Dinosaur Land is a place "where visitors can turn back the pages of time to the Mesozoic era, where dinosaurs were the only creatures that roamed the earth." Hmm, what a weird world that would be - no fish? no insects? no birds? no little furry mammals? weird, jackie, weird. Anywho, it looked fabulous - cheesy renditions of TRex, as if done by some primitive artist. The Civil War could wait - I pulled over. Drat! It's the middle of January on a Monday and Dinosaur Land is closed. I was able to stick my camera through the chain link and take some great photos. I'm sure though that if I would have gone in, I would have learned all sorts of prehistoric educational things. read more
