This review is for the retirement department of Nationwide. I submitted a 457 unforeseeable hardship request to withdraw my money there customer service is horrible lacks compassion & empathy. It's been 16 days and I just received a email unable to process request. Stay away from Nationwide they only want your money they don't care about the hardship your going through nor to they make it easy to access your funds!! Horrible ethics!! read more

If I could, I would not select a star. They only have customer service during the hours you are supposed to be working, even less availability than that. Their fax machine never answers when you want to submit a claim and by God, their online system can't find your policy number if you want to create an account. For the prices they charge you would think they could get another fax machine. And then, you have to fight to get a claim paid. P.S. Speaking from experience, they are also not a good option for your home or auto insurance. I would bypass them altogether. read more

For 14 + years I have had this insurance. They got worse and worse as time went on... I paid for the superior plan with the cancer endorsement. Then my dog got cancer and I had to put him down. I finally get a check and they didn't pay for the cancer diagnosis they only paid the lower amount for treatment of the seizures he was having as a result of his brain cancer. To make matters worse when I got the check there was a letter attached that said "We hope Elvis is doing well". Are you kidding me?????? read more

I requested insurance for my dog in August and they stated that it would take 2 weeks for the insurance to take effect. A week later my dog had a seizure so I decided to call since VPI had already taken the initial charge and sent me my insurance cards, to see if they would cover the vet bills with regards to the seizure. The representative said I wouldn't be covered and that I couldn't do anything about it. I then asked to speak with a supervisor who also said the same thing. Ok, fine, I will deal with it as a pre-existing condition, but I know my dog still needs insurance, so I would continue to pay the premium to keep the coverage for anything else. I did also mention that my dog had a stomach surgery for a bowel obstruction earlier that year as well as a knee surgery for a ruptured ACL. The VPI supervisor said I had lied on my application and that I didn't mention any surgeries. When filling out the online form, there were no questions about prior surgeries, I have no problem disclosing these because they are more along the lines of one offs that are not chronic issues. I didn't lie about them being covered as there was no option to fill this information out. Also, the issues had already been resolved. I offered to have all her medical records sent to them for their records as well. The supervisor said that was not necessary and everything was fine. She also mentioned that the seizure and related visits (for the seizures) would not be covered by VPI, but anything else in the future once the policy was effective would be covered. I agreed to their terms and we ended the conversation there. A couple of weeks later, I received a letter stating my coverage was "null and void" because of pre-existing conditions of a stomach surgery and seizures. It was my fault that I called and was honest with them. read more

I have used VPI for both of my dogs for years and i really enjoy the peace of mind it provides. It will not cover the total cost but it definitely helps. I dont have to hesitate to provide my dogs with the care that our vet recommends because i know VPI will be helping to pay for part of it. Neither of my dogs have needed any major coverage (and hopefully won't ever) so I cant speak to the other reviewers experiences but i have been very happy so far and recommend VPI coverage to all my friends. read more

Yesterday, 3/10/2016, about 10:45 am and I logged into the website & noticed the policy I had paid in full for my 6 months old kitten Apollo was cancelled. I called their customer care center to inquire why it was cancelled. One of your representatives told me that the policy was cancelled by underwriting due to a "preexisting condition". First, I do NOT understand how a kitten less than 6 months old can have a pre-existing condition. I got him as a healthy kitten. Secondly, I can NOT believe they cancelled Apollo's policy WITHOUT contacting me. Thirdly, your representative had the audacity with such disrespect and coldness to compare my cat, a living breathing member of my family, to a CAR. Lastly, speaking to her supervisor and manager, they did NOT care or understand that pets are members of our family. VPI/Nationwide would rather take my money and cancel a policy instead of actually doing their jobs. To cover sick pets. I strongly recommend you do NOT cover your pets with this company. Extremely dissapointed in this insurance. I have a French bulldog who had an injury with X-rays, backup letter from surgeon, no previous problems, and an itemized bill. They have denied the whole claim and customer service was not was I expected, very curt and not helpful. I would not recommend paying premiums. read more

I'm shocked to see so many negative reviews. This is the first pet insurance I have had, I started coverage on my medium dog who was about 3 months old at the time of beginning coverage. I purchased the best offered at the time (think it is called major medical plan). Along with it I purchased the max wellness rider, and I am so lucky I went through with it when I did because they soon stopped offering that specific rider(other wellness riders available), and with their policy my pet is grandfathered in for life now. Which is great! I expected to use the wellness rider more than the medical plan, hopefully, my dog (Lilo) will not need it too often. In the event that she does though, I went ahead and got the best one which is pretty great seeing how Nationwide has taken over and my yearly max of 14K changed to no limit. The wellness rider is a life saver! Especially since it paid for my dog to be spayed, and every year it pretty much 100% covers her annual renewal of vaccines along with checkups, so forth. There is no deductible and the max yearly is 1K. Doesn't seem like much but considering you are only paying $25/mo for wellness, it is really significant. Last year I used the entirety of my wellness plan except the dental, which they cover up to $200 for, I should of used it but maybe this year. Anyway I literally used $800 and I have never ever ever had an issue with Nationwide or VPI paying. They have allowed me to be at peace not having to worry about dropping $500 at once for Lilo's annual renewals. They also have neat additions like they cover 1 extra exam ( blood test, x rays, EKG..) up to $100, and yes I did end up using that. Nationwide paid for Lilo's microchip, flea/ heart worm control ($75) which is about half a years worth considering I live in Texas and heart worm medication is a must all year round. I don't know. Now I'm just rambling, but I've read the policy thoroughly, and with my veterinarian office, the refund amount is plenty sufficient for the procedures listed. I did do a lot of research, and with a new puppy, they seemed like the best option, their wellness package far exceeded any other pet insurance plan for the price. Most did not cover any dental or spaying, most had a cap at 600 or less, for much more per month. The claims process is easy. So easy, easier than my own pharmacy sometimes. It is literally 1 sheet that is pre filled with your info, and the only thing you have to do is check whether it is a wellness or medical claim. If it is a medical claim, you write doctors diagnosis, and the last portion is the amount of the claim, signature and bam your done. Just email that form with the invoice from the vet office, & or medical notes/diagnosis if claiming medical plan, and you usually get a confirmation response instantly and then another one within 48 hours to let you know your claim is being processed. With me, they usually have my explanation of benefits within a week, and the check is in my hand within 2 weeks of sending the claim. The explanation of benefits is straight forward, it shows what you claimed, how much they paid, how much $ remaining in that category, and explanation if something is not covered with policy code, which is great it makes it real easy to look in your policy and quick check to understand what's going on. I've only done that once or twice, for instance they do not cover hazardous waste charges ( they aren't more than $6, no biggie). Anyways I sent in a claim recently within this month and they have already processed it and it is only the 12th. I think I sent it on the 8th. Okay I am going to stop raving about this company. SCAM. Beware. I had my dog with VPI for 5 years. Cancelled today. Before we got the insurance, when we first rescued her, she was treated at the Vet for a skin rash which the vet attributed to either seasonal allergies or food allergies - very typical and common for rescue dogs. It took a short while until we figured out the best food for her, until her anxiety diminished, and she became a healthy, happy dog. No skin problems! On our application with VPI we stated the skin rash as a condition she had been previously treated for. Fast forward 5 years later: I found out that the plan she had been under is an old plan and there are much better with higher coverage, etc. (which we didn't know about, and were not told about for all those years, unfortunately). I spoke to a representative about getting her on a better plan, asked him about the skin conditions - he said that as long as she hadn't been treated for it for 6 months - 1 year, that I could request that the condition no longer be deemed as excluded. Great! Had to call back another time when I had more time to talk. Spoke to another representative another day who told me completely opposite information: that skin rash falls under the list of 20 conditions that are "permanent" which the "underwriting department" would in no way consider waiving. When I asked him why the other guy told me something different, he said it's because he's new. And he added, "that's besides the point that he gave you misinformation, I'm giving you the correct information now." And when I asked him why on the website the quote price ranges are lower than what he was quoting me, he responded that that was just something their marketing department does. Huh?! So, after clarifying with him, this is the bottom line: My dog's treatment 5 years ago for a skin rash excludes any and all VPI coverage for skin-related conditions, and when I probed further, I found out that EVEN if she gets skin cancer later in life, that will be traced back to her skin rash when we first rescued her, and NO coverage will be allotted for treatment of that cancer. Hmmm. First of all, I regret having paid all this money for $2000 for the past 5 years for an insurance company that deems a skin rash sufficient to exclude all coverage for skin cancer, if that were to ever occur. When the only time we used the insurance was for a minor injury which they paid about $100 for. And secondly, misinformation both on the website and through the representative - not "beside the point," VPI. Going elsewhere for pet insurance, where I can have the peace of mind that, if I were to need it, I would get the help from an insurance company that is fair and not misleading. read more

I had signed up for vpi a nationwide insurance company in hopes this would be a good secondary protection for my 2 dogs .. Both dogs are young (under 2 years of age) no serious problems at the time i signed up ... one of my dogs ended up in the vet office with a infection in her blood stream not serious but never the less the antibiotic was quite costly, looked in the policy book and what do you know , yes it is claimable according to the vpi policy.. they will review and let me know easy enough right, well this process took over 6 mo to review needed all vet records (understandable) but 6 mos after only to find out they denied this claim said it was a pre-existing condition .. there was no prior record for any such thing .. there explanation was well when you first brought her in to your vet she had a inflamed foot injury ,... I was shocked , how they can deny a claim that had no prior issue nor never happened .. the rebute of this again denied.., take 6 mo to review only to continue to pay the monthly premium and get denied on a small claim.. i read the entire claims packet and really if you take a good close look at it most big costs issues , they dont cover any of these (the issues like dysplasia considered birth related or even a bee sting treated 2 yrs prior is considered not claimable pre exiting in the small print ..please beware your better off with a savings account put in place with a monthly deduction at the same price knowing it is there to protect your animals and you cant be denied with a personal savings in case of a emergency.. read more

I'm going to pause on this for a bit, I'm too pissed off to write what I think about VPI/Nationwide. The 1 star rating, as of right now, is because I think that just because my experience thus far has been so less than, doesn't mean the company is a complete waste of time (=me being nice). But that may change later...just don't know how a company who insures people's pets can pick and choose what bill to pay. I had my cat in 3 different hospitals in the last 2 weeks. 2 of those were 5 night hospital stays. The other was the 1st emergency hospital that had to transfer my cat to the next hospital. Sadly, this was a VCA hospital that requires you to pay 75% upfront. I had no choice because it was a transfer and my cat would die. Out of pocket I had to pay $1090, and another $900 before getting my cat out of there 5 days later because I couldn't afford it anymore. He had to go back in to a new hospital days later. That VCA bill is not getting reimbursed. So the same procedures they did at VCA were done again at the 3rd hospital (Ambassador in Long Beach), and for way less ($950) - guess what got paid? Emergency visit to AMG - $1200- nope Emergency transfer to VCA - $2000- nope Ambassador - $950 - yes I may need to put my cat down because he isn't exactly better, and they say he will more than likely get this again (blocked, can't pee). The alternative to putting him down is a surgery I will not put him through. My other cat I have covered won't be for long. I'll go back to Trupanion, where they cover hospital costs up front, no claim crap to deal with. Since VPI/Nationwide has paid the max amount for this specific diagnosis, they will not pay additional claims for the same issue until the full calendar year is up. That's more than 6 months away. The policy has a max payout of no more than $14K, which sounds great but my cat won't use any of that coverage so it's basically a waste. If I got a UTI and went to the doctors, my insurance would cover the visit and prescriptions, minus a co-pay. If I get another one, I'm covered. My cat, however, gets what is kind of like a UTI but it can also lead to a blockage, and possible death if not treated. Knowing he isn't covered for the next several months unless he gets sick with something else is just as bad as being uninsured. I lied, not taking a pause. Just glad I could sum that up before writing a longer novel. read more

The plan is absolutely awful. I have two ferrets, and my boyfriend and I were so happy to finally find a pet insurance that caters to exotic pets. We were greatly disappointed when the policy finally arrived. It didn't cover ANYTHING close to the normal costs of owning a pet. This policy was nothing but a scam to take $114 to start the plan plus an extra $20 per month to continue the plan (the numbers are also per pet by the way) so they could only be protected from extreme circumstances like broken limbs from car accidents. Ferrets are not like dogs and cats, therefore they are not out and about like there fellow furry friends. They are not as highly active where they may in fact injure themselves to the point where they might actually break their own legs, necks, etc. This policy only covered rare, unlucky draw situations and it wasn't worth our money. My babies are 2 years and 6 months old so they have a long time before any of their expected ferret diseases comes to haunt them, which of course, the policy does not cover. Bottom line: If you are a ferret owner, you are better off without this plan. It's not worth your time. read more

My husband & I rescued a healthy 2 year old mini schnauzer and signed her up for Nationwide Pet Insurance. Our dog Sophie was accepted and we paid to signup and began paying our monthly premium of $69.00. Our first claim of $405.00 was denied! Nationwide wanted a year's worth of paperwork on Sophie; a copy of every exam or test she had had over a year's worth of time. Of course we do not have paperwork on her for a year, we only had rescued her 3 months ago. Even if we had I didn't signup just to fight it out with the company to get part of her claims paid, if that. So unfortunately for us this was a $500 learning lesson; Don't Sign Up For Nationwide Pet Insurance, buyer beware. read more

For the last 14 years, we have insured our dogs with VPI. One of our dogs was diagnosed with cancer recently and I learned today the VPI denied the claim all of it! This dog is 10 years old and we even (at VPI's recommendation) took out an additional cancer writer on this dog to pay extra just in case she developed cancer. Before we sought treatment at CSU Vet hospital in Fort Collins, we contacted VPI to make sure our dog would be covered. They claimed she would be especially with the additional writer we had. What really struck me as odd was when I called VPI to see why they had denied our claim, their representative informed me it was breed specific however, they do cover this type of cancer in other dogs but couldn't explain why. VPI gives you different answers every time you call or email them They used to be the biggest since they were the oldest but there is a reason their reviews are so low on other websites (petinsurancerviews.com). I plan to cancel my other policies with them. Our dog who has cancer will only live a couple more months and since VPI won't cover her after paying them for 10+ years, don't see any reason to pay them until she passes. If you have VPI, I would double check your policies to make sure they will be there for you if the need arises. They sure weren't for us. read more

Horrible, Horrible Horrible! What more to say!! I paid for the policy plus cancer rider extra policy for 12 years; then my baby got Malignant Melanoma which is considered by Nationwide a skin disease only. It was impossible to get reimbursed as my dog had the melanoma on her jaw, not her skin. Furthermore, to file a claim takes a Ph.D. or higher degree. Diagnostic codes must be submitted!! Put your money in a saving account a save yourself the anguish of dealing with this company. They don't care!! read more

WOW! Horrible company, worst customer service EVER!!!! they care NOTHING about you or your pet, only their bottom dollar! Like other reviews I read here, I was given incorrect and inadequate information from VPI representatives. After being a loyal customer with two pets insured with them for YEARS, paying premiums for YEARS, I was approached by a VPI representative to "upgrade" my dogs' policy, WELL, after two weeks of chasing my tail, doing EXACTLY what the VPI rep TOLD me to do, taking my dog to have blood work done so I could have her file reviewed and considered for the upgrade with underwriting, I was told in the end that I was being denied the upgrade BECAUSE I HAVE GONE TO HAVE THE BLOOD WORK DONE WHICH NOW CAUSES A CLAIM TO BE MADE AND THEY ARE DENYING MY UPGRADE BECAUSE I HAVE A CLAIM DURING THE REVIEW PERIOD!!!!! They TOLD ME TO GO HAVE THE BLOOD WORK DONE!!!! I have tried and tried to talk to supervisor after supervisor, asking them to understand and make an exception as my denial was VPI's representatives fault. I was told that this is "a training opportunity for VPI" and that they would re-train the representatives involved! BUT they would not do anything for me. TOO BAD FOR ME. I was told and I quote "It is a business decision, we have to make money" WOW WOW WOW!!!!!! I will be researching my options on getting the hell out of this company's grasp. So sorry now that I have given them so much of my money over the years of LOYAL patronage. They obviously have NO sense or care of loyalty and integrity when it comes to customer vs. bottom dollar! I have had numerous vets since this happened recommend Pet Plan Ins. or Truepanion Ins. TRY THESE OTHER ONES FIRST, do yourself a favor. What a MISTAKE! I switched from Embrace to Nationwide because my company started offering it as a benefit. My beloved dog passed away at 4.5 years old due to liver and organ failure. I have had to fight to get claims processed, and after 6 weeks, found out today that from an $8500 claim, only $2500 is covered because the rest has a limit of $780! We don't know what caused her liver failure, yet I find it hard to believe that you can attribute over $5000 to one diagnosis, since the Drs could not even pinpoint the final diagnosis. We are getting a new puppy next month, and not only will we be going back to Embrace, but I will also be sharing my experience with my co-workers of which there are 25,000 in the US. read more

As a veterinary professional, I have had multiple frustrating and heartbreaking interactions with this company on behalf of my patients and clients. Pet insurance companies vary widely in what they will cover, and I've found Nationwide's/VPI coverage to border on neglectful. I recommend any pet owner discuss possible insurance companies with their family veterinarian. Please read the fine print on any policy you plan to purchase because there are significant caps on payments. In addition, the company will find loopholes to deny complete claims despite owners following all guidelines for good medicine. This company is not on your or your pet's side. read more

I have had a great experience with VPI which is now Nationwide. they are awesome. I can only speak for my own experience but they have paid on my dogs surgeries and medical care etc. They are also very quick on their payments. Two other people i have run into in Vet waiting rooms have also expressed their positive experiences with VPI/Nationwide. I am glad i have their coverage for my 8 year old dog. read more

Too many stipulations. My dog had her ACL repaired and because I didn't have the policy for a year yet, they denied all coverage regarding this surgery even though the vet sent her records from 2 years previous to prove she didn't have any existing ACL issues. I've spent hundreds on this policy only to get denied any coverage. Not worth it. Try another company. read more

This used to be VPI Veterinary Pet Insurance. Nationwide bought them out and destroyed their customer service. I used to love my girls insurance coverage (two small dogs) but since their original policies came up for renewal its been nothing but problems. They cancelled the original policies a month before their expiration date, and I was notified almost two weeks layer by snail mail. Only to deny one of them coverage under the new policy and not tell me. The one who WAS eligible was left with no coverage at all for two weeks. I asked the sales girl what I was supposed to do if something happened in those two weeks I had paid for but wasn't receiving coverage. I was told to "hope nothing happens"... If I was the kind of person to just hope, I wouldn't have insurance in the first place! I am already locked in for another year with these people, but will definitely be going with a different company next year. read more

***Please be aware***do your homework and research thoroughly before you use VPI. I have had great experience when it was VPI before Nationwide. Since Nationwide took over something has definitely changed. They rejected the claims I submitted very QUICKLY but when I contacted them to see what was needed to reprocessed the claims. I was told something will be in the mail but it has been almost 2 weeks, nothing. They are in Brea CA. It should have only taken 2 days to get to my house. When I called again, I was told something should be in the mail. I asked for on-line customer support and submitted a request to see what to do next. I got a incident# but that's about it. NO ONE has contacted me. I think this has a really bad smell to me. I will post more updates so you can see where this is going. I want my fellow pet owners to hear the truth. read more

Ever since they bought out VPI, their service is an absolute disappointment! I had them for 13 years insuring my rabbits, always being very happy with their service. My latest claim was denied outright and then the appeal denied as well. Nationwide Pet then dragged this claim out for almost 4 months after my pet died. After repeated calls to customer service department, I continually got "it's in process", nothing more. The Exclusions page in my policy mentions nothing about a "pre-existing condition that began or was treated up to twelve months before the effective date of this policy". I learned of this in the Claim Denial Detail. Reasons of denial should be explained in full, in the Exclusions section of the policy when your customer receives the policy. Not AFTER claims have been submitted then denied. Your customers should know exactly what will and will not be covered prior to insuring their pet. This is not explained on your web site either. Based on the radiographer's report dated 11/12/15, there is absolutely NO mention of a mass in the bladder area in Duncan, which Nationwide Pet is claiming there is. In my veterinarian's response to you on May 3, 2016, there is a "Suspected cystic neoplasia inguinal fibrosis and herniation". Suspected, NO certain proof. Therefore, you can not say it was a pre-existing condition, as there is no concrete proof. You are assuming, supposing it to be the case, without proof. There was indeed a mass discovered via radiographs on 2/10/16. It was on this date ONLY, that the mass could be seen. The pain it was causing Duncan, in turn lead to gastric stasis, then ileus. The mass was a calcified lipoma. How do we not know if it was a hereditary and/or congenital condition? Hereditary conditions, such as familial multiple lipomatosis, may include lipoma development. Which, according to your site, hereditary/congenital condition IS covered. Since there was no proof, only assumption by you, based on the 11/10/15 and 11/12/15 vet records, there is nothing to say otherwise, that this calcified lipoma could have been hereditary. Why was this not taken into consideration when processing this claim? You just automatically said "pre-existing condition" without any further consideration. When someone adopts an animal (something of which I have seen you promote on your Facebook page) they have absolutely no idea of the medical history of that animal. At least most do not. Your customers rely upon your services as an insurance company to, in good faith, help provide for veterinary expenses for that animal. When I adopted Duncan, I had no idea of his medical history, his hereditary and/or congenital conditions. Nor did I ever expect to lose him a mere three months later. My heart was crushed and still is, due to his passing. I enrolled him in your pet insurance plan thinking that at the very least, some of any medical expenses he had, would be covered. Just like they had been for my other rabbits in the last 13 years. I had no knowledge of any mass, ileus, or the like, when I adopted him, nor on the day he was enrolled in your plan, because the vet records did NOT show any of this. Any person that buys insurance for their pet, obviously WANTS to do right by them. As your own line states "We cover what matters most". Clearly, in my case, you do not. I will never insure with Nationwide Pet again, and also cancelled my credit card with them. read more

I have had nothing but problems with this pet insurance company, and felt the need to write my first Yelp review to warn others. I would advise you not to select them, as they have terrible customer service and refuse to use common sense when reviewing claims. They have conveniently marked my puppy with a "pre-existing condition" of gastroenteritis (stomach flu) because she was treated for diarrhea as a result of a food change ("dietary indiscretion") two weeks before her policy effective date. I took the appropriate steps to dispute this denial and the pre-existing condition by asking my vet to take the time to send them a written account of medical opinion of the visit in question. Below is this letter, stating that he did not, in fact, treat her for the stomach flu prior to the policy effective date. Nationwide STILL refused to remove the pre-existing condition, and are lumping all subsequent visits related to stomach upset to this false diagnosis of the stomach flu. You cannot have it both ways, Nationwide. If my vet tells you dietary indiscretion is what he treated prior to the effective date, then any problems related to dietary changes is the "pre-existing condition" (which is absurd to classify as a pre-existing condition). However, Nationwide has not only disregarded the dispute from myself and the verification from my vet, but also decided to make up their own classification of all future stomach issues as stomach flu. The only explanation they will offer is "my hands are tied". This is the most ridiculous scam. Beware. 03/30/2016 To Whom It May Concern, We received notice from our client that the claim on 11/24/2015 was rejected due to the diarrhea being considered a "pre-existing condition". That pre-exisiting condition being the diarrhea that was treated on 10/30/2015. However, after reviewing the charts, it is my medical opinion that this is not considered a pre-existing condition. The diarrhea that was diagnosed and treated on 10/30/2015 had a negative parasite sample and thus the diarrhea was presumed to be caused by a "dietary indiscretion" or intestinal upset secondary to an animal eating something (known or unknown) outside of their normal diet. The second incidence of diarrhea on 11/24/2015 was different in that a parasite was found in the fecal sample (fecal test was not charged to the client). This parasite was Giardia, and thus was the official cause for Lilly's diarrhea that day. Since Giardia had not been found in Lilly's fecal tests before this day, this is not a pre-existing condition and unrelated to the dietary indiscretion incident on 10/30/2015. On a related note, the owner provided a follow-up fecal sample on 12/13/2015 which was negative of any parasites. This company is now called Nationwide, but nonetheless they really came through for me when my dog had a ruptured ligament. I had the major medical plan, and the bill came to over $3500 after pre and post op visits and the surgery itself. This company paid what I was eligible for without hesitation as long as I provided the proper documentation which I did. Payment was fast and hassle free for me which was important since I was busy trying to rehab my pet. I would highly recommend pet insurance through this company for anyone who is worried that their pet may suffer an injury or illness for which they are financially unable to pay for upfront.
