I have been a member here for about 2 years. The school is very professional and clean. I have…read morelearned a lot here during my two years. This summer I hurt my back playing basketball right before my 6 month membership was up and the manager had me come in to have the owner recommend me the proper treatment. My membership was going to expire in a week and they did not bring up the membership they were only concerned about my health. My back has healed and I am back training again. This martial arts school is as high class as it gets for any service business in any city. I will recommend them to anyone.

This happened a couple years ago, so I can't speak to how things are handled there now. But I had a…read morenegative experience trying to contact the Westchase flagship location about a serious concern connected to my experience at another affiliated location. The concern involved safety, conduct, and how issues involving staff or members were being handled. I made four separate calls to four different people, was unable to get a hold of anyone, left my callback information, and explained generally that I was trying to raise a serious concern that I believed warranted awareness or oversight. I did not receive a callback or meaningful follow-up. I am not reviewing any one person individually. My concern is that I attempted to raise a serious issue through multiple channels connected to the flagship location and was met with silence. With time, what stands out to me most is not only the original situation, but the lack of meaningful follow-up when I tried to raise it through what I understood to be appropriate channels. That kind of non-response leaves things unresolved. It also leaves the person who raised the concern carrying the consequences alone. In a martial arts environment, especially one involving physical training and close contact, trust and safety depend not only on what happens on the mat, but also on whether concerns can be raised and handled responsibly. From my experience at the time, I did not feel there was a reliable process for escalation, accountability, or member support.

We toured the place on our first visit and then got a 30 day free trial. On our initial visit, we…read morewere told the class would only have 4-5 kids since our son is under 5. They later told me it was "miscommunication". Well then communicate better..? To our surprise the class had almost 15 kids aged 4-12 today. They expected our 4 year old to keep up with everyone when he clearly didn't know what he was doing and was intimidated. As excited as my kid was to attend class, he broke down during class. My issue comes in when rather than comforting my kid who was 20 mins into his karate lesson or giving him some individual attention or helping him with the moves, the employees told me I was "interrupting" my crying 4 year old. Also how do you expect a kid to just come in, be thrown in a group 15 older kids and know how to do each move or how to kick or how to punch or how to do ANYTHING? Isnt that what we're paying you to teach? Absolutely ridiculous.

And I must warn you, it is definitely not for the faint of heart! I'm always on the lookout to mix up my workout regimen with new things to keep me interested and challenged, in addition to a boot camp I do twice a week, so a friend pointed me in the direction of a Groupon deal for "I Love Kickboxing.com" housed here at the American Martial Arts Academy. It's about an hour workout consisting of various stretching, ab excercises, upper body, and tons of cardio all at rapid fire speed, mixed in with punch/kick work --- it's the ultimate workout. The most important thing I learned was an awareness of my breathing to tie everything together. This is definitely a challenging workout and one that gets the job done. The instructors were very encouraging and I received more one-on-one work with an instructor/facilitator that was assisting. The most surprising thing? I can't remember the last time I had sweat as much as I did from that one class. And it felt pretty damn good. I've only been to one class, so I'll have to update once I've been to a few more classes.
