The National Hellenic Museum is housed in a rather swanky newbuild on Halsted, the main drag of Greektown just west of downtown Chicago. This four-story building opened in late 2011. The principal designer of the museum is a local Greek American architect, so that seems kind of appropriate. The listed adult admission is $10, but my bud and I recently toured the museum for free thanks to a special national museums promotion. The main floor has a small gift shop, and also on this level there is a large space that can host functions. The museum is supposedly the largest Greek museum outside of Greece. Artifacts help to illustrate Greek cultural history as well as the Greek-American immigration experience. There are some flatscreens that show a scrolling stream of mesmerizing images of the beautiful scenery in Greece, and these images will make you want to book a trip to Greece right away. Various kid-friendly displays should keep the youngsters happy. The rooftop is probably used for special events. On the day of our visit it was quite possibly the hottest day of the year in Chicago so nothing was going on outside, though you can get a few peeks of the surrounding Chicago cityscape from the top. The NHM is closed on Mondays.

For being half Greek, one would think I would just give it a million stars --after all, these are my peeps! Now don't get me wrong, it is a beautiful building and the ideas are there, but it definitely lacked substance, and felt more like an art gallery than a museum on the first two floors. We shot up to the 3rd floor to see Greek history, and thought the focus would really be on Chicago and Greektown. I also figure (just based on MY family) that Greeks don't really throw anything out, so there would probably be a ton of stuff to see. It just seemed like something was missing, and we kept looking around wondering if we missed an entire wing. I felt like I wanted more from this floor. We went off course and went to the fourth floor terrace, and grabbed views of the Chicago skyline, and it was a great day to be outside to enjoy it. The second floor was really cool, as it depicted the unrest in Greece and the graffiti art. (I only know that information because the girl on the first floor said so.) The music playing was some cool sounding dubstep, and I really wanted to absorb that floor. It felt more like an art gallery, and it didn't give any backstory that I could read or follow. I have this weird fondness towards street graffiti art, so I wanted to know more, not sure what ... but more. Thankfully I was able to read about each of the artists in a leaflet that I grabbed, and learn more about the backstory when I got back home. I think it would be great if all this went up on the wall with the art, so I don't have to take paper with me. The first floor had an exhibit about the Greek Monsters, a modern day twist to Greek mythology. This was also cool, but again had more of a modern art feel to it, and if I knew this prior to going, I might have been in the right head space for it. Overall it was good, it seems like it's going in the right direction -- I would've just loved to see more history of Greektown and photos.

Nice piece of architecture!the museum is new so we shoukd give them some more time to add things..you cannot invent history..Its not a theme park.. Its really really touching the exhibition about the greek immigration and the one about the Greek independence.. I give them 5 stars to encourage them do more.. P.s if you are in the hood try the Artopolis or the Meli cafe. Both delicious!:)

This was a nice museum with very friendly staff. I did find it a little expensive for what was offered. The exhibits involved a LOT of reading, but there was a large field trip there while I was and the kids all seemed to be having fun. Beautiful building and it seems they change exhibits often.

This is good venue for an event. It's newly remodeled. It has a large coat room and the guest spaces are top notch. Good location.

The truth of the statement revealed itself as vaunted ceilings gave this cavernous room an aura of grandeur and the feeling of tradition. There were beings engaged in erudite studies with an inflexible concentration on laptops, notebooks, and in the back were old men going back and forth on the chessboards. It was still and had the eerie silence of a church chapel and sunbeams flowed in from the windows above. What an alien universe and there I was with a large foil tin carrying thirty of the best chicken wings Chicago had to offer. After the religious pilgrimage to Wings Around the World, Reuben H and Aurore L had the good sense to take us all to Reynolds where we wouldn't be bothered and be allowed to worship our wings in peace. For the moment, Reuben went to fetch pop while Aurore went off as well. I was alone and a heretic - a trespasser sneaking in and using up space that I had no right to, but the chess players were very old and had no business being there either. Then it came to me that everyone was allowed in and Reynolds was there for all to share, no identification required! Lined on the walls are large portraits showing various trustees of the University of Chicago. Lists of past Presidents line the wall and the fashion progression from long beards and robes to finely made designer suits and shaved faces led us to mock one portrait - he definitely wanted some of our chicken wings! We cracked open our wings and uncapped our pops only to find that the Cherry Pepsi was expired! While we munched and crunched on our chicken wings, nary a soul turned their heads nor noticed what fine dining we were helping ourselves to. The unbending concentration of the other people in the hall sustained itself except for the old chess players who all got up and went out for a smoke. We ate undisturbed and worked to get rid of the evidence. On our way out a young college student declared that he was going to have to retake high school chemistry. We laughed about it and then I thought that they were right - It really was just like Harry Potter!
