5 stars for Maggie! My rating is specifically for Maggie at National. I had to do a vehicle switch because the original car I rented (not from this location) should never have been rented out in the first place. To be honest, I was already having a pretty terrible day, which is definitely a ME problem. To be inconvenienced with this car situation was extremely annoying on top of an already stressful day, but Maggie was an absolute bright spot. She was incredibly kind, patient, and went above and beyond to help me sort out a situation that wasn't even her responsibility. I had a fabulous rental experience with National at the time of pick up the attendant allowed me to select amongst several vehicles which was critical because I had a lot of cargo to carry on a 7 Hour Dr. vehicle performed wonderfully. I had a wonderful return experience. I love how the return line lanes are very well lit to make sure you have everything out of the vehicle. Look forward to my next experience. read more

As advised, I called customer service and was told my case was under review and that they would get back to me. i havent even received an email follow up yet. Update: still being told I they are waiting for response from management at the STT location in St Thomas USVI. Seems they are eager to trade a long term loyal customer over to one of their competitors just to keep $250 to vacuum a little extra beach sand. I had to wait 15 minutes at the checkout to finalize my rental late at night. The employee handling the checkout was in his car on a phone call, and when he returned, still on his phone, he seemed irritated that I honked to get his attention. He responded with, "You can't wait?" which I found rude and unprofessional, especially after I explained I'd already waited 15 minutes. As an Executive Elite member who frequently rents at Dallas airport, this experience was very disappointing and far below the standard I expect. read more

Saved our vacation! Will keep as short as I can. I have a 2016 F150 that was having mechanical problems. Vacation started on 9/21. Parts not available until 10/2. We needed a truck and as I had custom made storage for an f150, kayaks etc... National 800 number tells me no problem Dulles has "a ton of f150s". Drive the 35 minutes to Dulles, not an f150 in sight. Person at counter indicates Ram 1500 are all he has, but he goes and talks to manager, Jesse. Jesse informs us that the day before all f150s went to dealers because of safety recall. As we walk out to see if a Ram would work, I spot a white ford f250 in a group of cars. I point it out and Jesse asks if it will work. We double check space in back seat and Jesse let's us have the truck for the week. Jesse and Felix? were awesome. My first reservation that day was with another company (Avis) who tried to convince me that a Nissan Frontier (midsize) was equivalent to an f150 (full size) Next time I will start with National and eliminate the pain! Very displeased! I specifically asked to have a toll tag and found out after almost three weeks of my renting that I did not. When I called customer service I was told that I had to talk to their toll department which wasn't open when I called. I waited until Monday and called three times, waiting for very long periods of time only to call back customer service for assistance who then told me there was nothing that could be done except that I pay the fines when they come in. I am and Emerald club member, have rented many times through National and do not feel this has been handled correctly at all. I also rented this car for nearly five weeks. I would have thought more appreciation would be shown to me. Right now I am on vacation and this time I gave my business to AVIS. I will see how they handle things, then decide if I will be back to National or not... read more

quick update. They are doing tons of construction (awnings, new lanes, etc) so it is a mess right now. Its very tight when all the cars are in, results in lots of chaos and difficulty getting out of the parking lot. hoping long term it improves the capabilities. read more

***I returned my car rental here and the service was personal, friendly, quick, and good; there is a National Car Rental shuttle stop right next to this rental return that takes you to the Dulles terminal*** I am not sure what the parking situation is if you need to just park; like many airport car rental agencies, this one is located near the airport in kind of an isolated area. read more

Super easy to return my rental car here. The guy who checked in my car got me a receipt and I was on my way to the shuttle bus quickly. I still don't like the whole shuttle bus thing, but at least Dulles is a bus for each rental car company instead of a stupid shared bus for everyone to a central pavilion. We were stuck in portland me(stand by) and had to rent a car for what we thought was 1 day. Turned out that our flights were full so we changed to Boston. $50 fee to change location drip off and then we added an extra day. Then our flight in Boston didn't work so we called and switched our drop off to iad. Our charge for rental was 180 now . Then as we passed Hartford ct we called to see what would happen if we dropped our car there....they said another 150 over all the way to aid. Aweful system! We drove home 8 hrs because of the fees!!!! Loser system! read more

Terrible. One of my company's "preferred" rental services. I'm wondering who's making these deals, because they picked US Airways/United as our main airlines and National as our rental car choice. I'm not even going to mention my battle over a door ding. Well, I should. They tell you to go pick a car. Of course, it's pouring down rain. So I had no idea if there was a door ding or not. The guy gives me crap about it when I go to turn the car in. I'm sorry, I don't know whether there's a door ding there or not. Hell, he could have put it there. What I will mention is the shuttle. After running across the parking lot towing my bags, one shuttle pulls pulls away. Fine. There's another shuttle waiting with the driver sleeping in it. I run over there to the shuttle and stand by the door. The guy wakes up, starts it, and pulls away. I'm in despair. I tell the guy inside at customer disservice--the same one I'm freaking out about the door ding two minutes before--where do I get a cab? He gets on the radio and calls the driver back. He's already on his way to the airport. I'll never rent from them again. read more

The rental experience was good. The car was clean and the counter staff did their job. Okay, I did arrive late so I got to the rental place close to midnight. So, maybe the staff weren't exactly on their best. But, the reception I got was less than average as their was lack of courtesy. A friendly smile goes a long way. Then there was the gate guard. She was smoking a cigarette with another security person when I drove up. Her mannerism was as if I was interrupting something important. The way she barked out "see your papers" sounded like she was conversing with one of her hood sistahs. There was absolutely no pleasantly, no smile and not even a hint of a friendly gesture. This might have been a typical east coast tougher than a nail attitude since I encountered more than few people wth the same attitude during my week long visit. But, these folks are employed (by their own choice) to work in the Service sector. That means the company should teach their employees something about courtesy and customer respect. If they can't or won't, I'm sure there are plenty of others that are more than willing. read more

At IAD airport, the National and Alamo counters are at the same location. I had an Alamo rental through Priceline. I got on the National/Alamo shuttle and arrived at the rental car facility. I asked the shuttle driver what I needed to do since I was a National Emerald Aisle member but had an Alamo rental. He said "No Problem, just go pick out a car." I did what he said and drove up to the checkout kiosk. The person there took my ID and CC and processed the rental. He did not ask if I had a reservation or anything. On my return in 3 days, I was given a National bill for over $250. I contacted National and they said that records show I did a walk-up rental. I explained that I followed the shuttle driver's directions and they said they have no influence over what the shuttle drivers say. I then asked why the kiosk person would not ask if I had a reservation, etc... and they said that kiosk operators do not normally ask that. So, long story short, I paid for both a Priceline rental and a National walk-up rentall! And National has chosen to lose a customer rather than to resolve this issue. I encourage EVERYONE to boycott National rental facilities and choose an alternative rental company. I do contract work for National Geographic and rent maybe 20 times/year and National will no longer get my business and I am sharing my feelings with the other 20 people that do the same work I do and travel as much as I do. read more

Simply put, relative to its same location competitors, this National/Emerald Club site charges more (supposively for the flexibility and convenience), but does not deliver... I give it a 2-star because the return process was smooth although they forgot to e-mail the receipt this time. This was probably the 14th or 15th time, but likely the last time, I use Emerald Club at Washington Dulles International. Forget about the sales pitch that you can pick your own car because there simply weren't any around for me to choose from when I arrive late in the day. For the last few times, my only choice was among a couple of old dirty minivans with over 35K miles or alike. read more

I rented a car from National through Priceline website. Priceline charged my card in November of 2011 for our rental in June of 2012. When i came up to the counter, I reiterated that there would be NO CHARGES to my credit card considering I had already had it charged to my account and they said that there would be no charges made. All was fine, and it was very easy to return my rental and found out my additional driver and rental insurance charges. They only charged the second time for the additional drivers and insurance. All in all I'd reserve with them again! read more

Absolutely flawless. Got to the airport, got in an awaiting shuttle, used their app to scan the barcode on a car and practically just sped through the gate out the lot! Return was just as easy. Car was beautiful, clean and brand new. Customer service was on point! Loved this experience! read more

All went well. Shuttles come by quite frequently and its a short ride to the rental complex. There was a good selection of cars in the Executive Aisle even though it was later in the afternoon. The slowest part was trying to choose which car you wanted. The car was excellent. A clean, low mileage SUV with the amenities I needed. The return process was quick and efficient. read more

I love to deal with national car rental. They're very easy to get along with and they always have a car ready and clean for you. This particular location actually remembered my name and held my car for me because my flight got delayed The day before. I hire cars here quite frequently, and am an Emerald Club Executive member. There are rarely more than minivans or rubbish GM or Chrysler vehicles in the 'executive' lanes. The last time I politely inquired about the dearth of decent vehicles, the lane lady very rudely asked me "do you know how many people were here before you today? If you don't like them, wait for some more cars to be brought up", or words to this effect. This was at around 1pm. In my experience, this happens whether it's 8am, 1pm, or 3am. National, it would be lovely if you were to make an effort of bringing those many rows of lovely returned cars back over for other customers to use. Other observations: They never have ice scrapers in the winter. Not sure how I'm supposed to deal with that - use a credit card? They ran out of toll passes at the booth recently and after protesting that I carried no cash and needed the toll pass to use the toll road, I was asked to go back to the office myself to get one. I asked them to bring one out themselves, which they then did. It can take forever to check your car in whilst returning it. Often there are several employees standing about having a chat while the time to catch your flight whittles away. When you arrive on a red-eye flight and have to wait over 20 mins in the freezing cold for a shuttle at 2:30 in the morning, this isn't very fun. A few good things: I've never been dinged for another driver's damage The shuttle drivers always stop to pick me up when they've pulled out from the terminal curb and I flag them down. The drivers tend to be helpful, as well. read more

I am giving a two star, because of the following: 1 - It was difficult to get someone to help at pick; there was no one at the kiosk, I had to go inside the main office where I was redirected to the kiosk only to be redirected once again. 2 - Drop off was slightly better, but still confusing directions from the National staff where I was suppose to go. This is my first time renting from this location, I usually go to National Airport in Arlington. Not sure I will be renting from here again. read more

I've been a Emerald guy since 1986 and thing are all over the map lately. I called and made a reservation got the price and when I dropped it off the price tag was twice the quoted amount, but in a rush to question it. I know Enterprise rental is affiliated with National, however, National can learn from their top down management and their hiring process. They hire quality folks with great attitudes and good people skills not like some/most of the National frumpy folks! That's my commentary of the day! read more

My experience was great. Needed a car for 2 weeks (business travel), got the National shuttle right away, they had a good selection of cars to choose from when I got there. They asked me if I'd like a toll tag (I said yes, it's $20 extra and makes up for it in convenience). For return - just drove in, no line, they processed it right away, and again shuttle was already there waiting. No issues or surprise charges, so no complains from me. read more

I've been an Emerald club member for over 10 years, even though I rent very seldom. I love that I can walk on the lot from an airport shuttle or train and IMMEDIATELYjump into a car and go. I don't have to go to the desk, or talk to anyone, and I can pick any car I want. Returns are almost as easy, but the pick-up process makes National a fantastic company. read more

Very pleased with the ease with which we can just pick up any vehicle of our choice. Love the Emerald membership. However, when I dropped the car off the guy charged me for 2 gallons of Gas when I only drove 30 miles on a Chevy Impala. I think Impala is definitely better than 15 miles per gallon. read more

We rented a mini-van from National Car Rental in IAD. The Gentleman who help us was friendly, welcoming and quick. He took our reservation number, found us in his system, we paid and told us to pick any minivan in the lot. Fastest service we have ever experienced with a car rental. The National Car Rental Office and Operation at Dulles International Airport is by far the best at Dulles! I had rented from Hertz for 4 years and there were problems with Billing, overcharging and they rarely had a car in my class requirements. When Renting from Avis, the bus rarely showed up on time and their attitude was horrible. The Managers and employees at this National Car Rental office should be proud. Recently rented and picked up at Emerald lane. Did not check for damage prior to driving off around 10:30 at night. No one asked me to check either when I checked out at the gate. When I returned the vehicle, they claimed I caused damage to the rear bumper and I now have a claim damage to resolve. I'm positive that I did not run into anything. Be VERY CAREFUL that you carefully inspect any vehicle you rent from this location. You could get dinged with someone else's damage. read more

Got there on a Monday night, very late due to delayed flight. Was expecting nothing but minivans, as most good cars are already taken for the week. Happened upon a BMW 328i in the Executive aisle. Probably the best car I've gotten, even from bigger locations at better times (when more stocked), was super happy. Saw a GLK and a few other really nice cars when I dropped off mine too. Otherwise, shuttle is fast and convenient and driver was super friendly, and service to leave and drop-off was great. Only complaint was that the check-out lady told me I didn't need an EZ-Pass, which cause me a lot of hassle, GET IT!! read more
