I was disappointed when I stopped in a week ago. I picked up a loaf of sourdough and when checking out, I asked the service person if she could slice the loaf. She appeared very annoyed and so I said, "Do you not have a slicer back there?" She said they did but it was hard. Really? Hard to slice a loaf of bread with a bread slicer? Wow. Ten years later, the truth is that this is an industrialized inexpensive white bread factory. If you go to a picnic and the host doesn't offer National hard rolls, you know they didn't make the effort. Generally, though, this place has come to reflect the tastes and budgets of the area, which is to say that the selection is laughable--food-desert-y--compared to what one would find in a larger city. Or, compared to Wegman's. There is nothing artisanal here. The dessert cabinet I remember from when I was a kid is not as it was. Also, some items are downright terrible, such as the bagels. Oh man, are they bad. Price Chopper's are significantly better. They also don't accept cards which is part of the reason why I've walked out disappointed every time I've been on bread duty over the last decade. read more

Right from the outside you can tell this is an old time bakery with a lot of history of the area. They don't accept cards, it's cash only (mentioned near the register) & the selection is mostly bread and some baked sweet treats. We got the Raspberry muffin which at $1.80 was bigger than the average sized one and bursting with flavour. We loved it and wish we picked up a few more stuff! read more

Yet one more removed review for using the word "kosher." To all the haters out there, find something better to do than report reviews that you don't like. This place is a gem. Their baked goods are amazing and delicious. The hard rolls are a staple of Scranton and a former long standing Sunday morning tradition in our home. So crispy and crusty on the outside and delicious on the inside. Great to eat while reading the paper! Their bagels are great too and I always get a loaf of rye bread to take home. Cookies and pastries are excellent as well and don't last long. Chocolate chip cookies are the best!!! As mentioned previously, this place is Kosher and serves the large community in Scranton. As soon as I walk in the lady at the counter asks me what I would like and I tell her if I could have moment to look because it was my first time being there.She then sighs and goes to the back and I hear her tell the guy by the door to put the store closed she send proceeds to asks me what I would like and I say I'm still looking she goes to the back for a moment and as I am ready to finally say what I want she comes out and says the store is closed at 2:00 it was exactly 2:00 on the clock but online it said it closes at 2:30 but I listen to her anyways and decide to leave then a man proceeds to walk in I tell him it's close he doesn't listen as I'm watching she proceeds to serve him embarrassing for this establishment I heard such nice things too. read more

Great old fashioned bakery with a nice selection of breads, pastries and cookies. The hard rolls (less than $1 each!) looked phenomenal as did the bagels. Since it was close to St. Patrick's Day, they had Irish soda bread and also hot cross buns available. There were also biscuits with raisins in them. They looked fine! Unfortunately, there is no seating in the store, it is simply a store. I could see this being a nice place to come for a morning bagel or hard roll with butter. They just aren't set up to do so. I got an eclair and it was excellent, large and had a great ganache frosting. It was gone quite quickly. They also had a nice selection of cookies, danish and turnover pastries. You can buy rolls separately or in a bag. They have dinner rolls, too. If you're looking for "Texas toast" this is where you can get that kind of bread. Other kinds of bread that they have: Multigrain, Rye (unseeded), a pulled(?) white, and others. There was much more than I recall. Definitely worth the trip. Prices were reasonable and I'm sure the quality is better than you'll find at a grocery store. read more

Just had a burger on one after eating four with butter over the last two days. I could kiss the ground. An absolute gem. Nice bakery with a long history in the area. They have a pretty decent selection of pastries in the morning. Be sure to get there as soon as you can. It's nearby On&On marketplace that has a lot of cool antique items. Across the street is Electric City Axe Throwing which is awesome. read more

Nothing was labeled and I got looked at funny when I asked what an item was. First time in a bakery in a long time so was just looking for a helpful experience. Was very disappointed. Would not recommend just based off the poor customer service. Can't take out your bad day on your customers. Smile, you work in a place full of sugar! Our bagels were good. The Brioche rolls were dry and stale. The clerks are rude and surly and they are wrecking the business. They do not say hello, welcome, please, or goodbye. They say, "Who's next? to "What do you need?" The clerk who waited on me put the wrong desserts in the box. Just terrible. Will not be going back there for a long while if ever. read more

I guess its one of those place that you either love it or hate it. I've been there half a dozen times over the years and didn't have any good experience. The staff just wasn't friendly - consistently. It really doesn't take that much effort to crack a smile or say thank you. It really doesn't. May be others had better experience. Well, it took me 2 years to find this place! I moved to the area a few years back, like anytime one moves it takes a bit of time to find all the "gems" in the area. Let me tell you THIS bakery should be in the "Hall of FAME" for their stellar awesomeness, daily, that does not disappoint! I have not found one thing that myself or my family does not love. I love National Bakery! All of their products are great and very inexpensive. The product range is quite broad, with different types of breads, rolls, cakes, cookies, and pastries. National Bakery! BEST there is! They have the best of everything. Hard rolls, poppy seed danish, cinnamon buns, breads, and oh yes! bought a package of FRESH cinnamon buns the other day, EXCELLENT! I grew up on those wonderful hard rolls and always traveled when I moved out of Scranton 25 miles to get my fix every other week.You can't get them fresher. Sadly after getting what I deemed day OLD rolls the last 4 times I let them know they were ruining a great thing and a tradition with me as I froze them and the freshness lasted 4 days. As soon as I cut them the crust would fall off them and I never ,ever had that happen in my 60 years on this planet. After calling them and 2 weeks after we stopped by again and nothing has changed. I feel I am losing an Old Friend and something I loved. Love the Nat, great bakery with all the trimmings. My personal favorite is their sliced bread. (Hard rolls are very good, too) I know it seems nuts to be a fan of sliced bread, but the crust is nice and chewy while the inside is soft and wonderful. Not a bland soft blah that most loaves of sliced bread are. They don't use preservatives, I don't think, because the shelf life is about a day...but it's great! read more

I went twice this past weekend and bought tons of bakery goods and pizza both times. Both times the food was great and prices even better. The only difference was that the younger workers don't seem cheerful while the older woman who served us most recently was a doll. All I can say is "WOW!" The hard rolls are the BEST! I was reading the reviews and decided to take a ride to the bakery yesterday and I'm so happy I did. Left with 3 giant bags full of hard rolls, loaves of bread, poppy seed roll, a few pieces of cake, and some cookies for about $20. Well worth it. We are originally from NJ and I gotta say, these hard rolls are better than the ones back home and we used to think they were the best. The people that work there were really nice as well.
