    Italian WHAT salad?! (Ó_Ò)
    Andrew W.

Before visiting Parish Brewing, we planned to have lunch in Broussard, but when we arrived at our original destination, we discovered it was closed without announcement on New Year's Eve. Hungry after traveling through six parishes, my parents and I decided to have lunch at the nearest place we could find ― the restaurant across the street, Nash's. Located in an old gingerbread house from the early 1900s, a meal at Nash's is a lot like dining at Miss Havisham's house: The place is ramshackle and loaded with bric-a-brac of no discernible value, with worn-out chairs and faded, out-of-style prints on the walls. Add in the big glassed-in porch and the camellias in full bloom, and you get something best described as "small-town fancy." The menu is a mix of Italian and Louisiana cuisine; we mostly stuck to the former on our visit, though I did order a bowl of the chicken and sausage gumbo. We all agreed the flavor of the gumbo was excellent, but the consistency was too watery. "That's not gumbo. You got soup," my mom said. If it had the right consistency, it would've been a triumph. My chicken parmigiana lunch special was good, and my mom enjoyed her spaghetti and meatballs. The meatballs had good flavor and were moist. My father raved about his seafood pasta ― "the best seafood pasta I've ever had in my life," he said ― but my mom said it tasted "fishy." Service was friendly and attentive, and my parents especially seemed to enjoy themselves, which mattered most to me. None of the food was particularly mind-blowing, but nothing was bad, either. What ultimately drops it from four stars to three are the prices; with most entrées priced close to or over $30, I'd want the quality to be a little higher than that of your ordinary red sauce joint. That bowl of gumbo was $16, a price that would be unacceptable in the French Quarter, let alone small-town Broussard ― and that's if it weren't watery. Nash's was a bit of a lucky find and happy accident when we found ourselves in a pinch in an unfamiliar town, and we didn't have a bad meal there. But Nash's has several things it needs to attend to before it becomes a great restaurant ― or one worthy of a journey across six parishes.

My daughter loves Nash's as do I, Daddy daughter date night

First of all, there are a whole bunch of free parking and it was easy to find this restaurant. The atmosphere was low keyed and subtle, not loud and rambunctious. We were seated immediately, even if we were early for our reservation and our very friendly and helpful server, Jaslyn, was awesome! She suggested to start off with a delicious strawberry margarita and it was a home run! Perfectly blended garnished with both a lemon and a lime slice. We ordered the Prejean's seafood platter, which hit all the marks. Catfish filet, oysters, crawfish, alligator, shrimp, hush puppies and fries. Everything was lightly battered and not the least oily. We also had to try the chicken, andouille sausage gumbo and the crab cake vermilion which were so delicious! But, the highlight was our extraordinary server, Jaslyn! The was the epitome of southern hospitality with her sweet, unassuming personality! The next time I'm in Louisiana, I'll be back at Prejean"s!

This is a top-notch local seafood restaurant, and long time favorite. When I say "long-term", I'm almost 82 & have been a customer for over 65 years, since coming with my parents in the 1950's. I know of no other restaurant anywhere with that record of excellence & consistent performance. The specialty is Louisiana Atlantic blue crab, and in that genre, Riverside has no real peers. Yes, they offer a wider array including local crawfish, shrimp, & oysters; plus cold water lobsters & steaks. But our crab is delicate & must be handled with expertise. Riverside does that better than I could at home on the Teche. Secluded off street lot parking, swamp-ish theme landscaped grounds, locals bar, professional waitstaff. If unfamiliar w/ area, use your phone for directions. One can't go wrong here. 5+ Stars from me, every time. Don't stop until you get here ! Caveat, may be closed Sundays & Mondays, call first. Rick

Responding to Chelsa K.'s 1* review. As I am someone who was in the restaurant when it happened…read more I just think it's funny how you aren't mentioning y'all came in as 6 people and then wanted accommodations for 30 people during one of the busiest times of the night. Or that they argued with the amazing manager for nearly an hour total after being told they couldn't accommodate that size party. They're also leaving out the part where people from their group marched in and seated themselves, stood over occupied tables waiting for guests to leave, insisting the hosts clean the tables, and made the entire restaurant uncomfortable. This had nothing to do with race and everything to do with behavior. Any group acting like that would've gotten the exact same response. In short, do better. Y'all came in and ruined everyone's dinner because y'all don't know how to plan ahead. Stop blaming people for your mistakes and take accountability.

This may have been part of the reason its wasn't all that busy on a Tuesday lunch. Similar to some other restaurants in Louisiana I've visited, they have a side with a bar, to-go area and high tops, and a more family oriented side of the restaurant with a bunch of low top tables. Fried pork rinds are served with every table. They have daily plate lunches and the one day I came it was chicken fried steak. However, it's not usually a good idea to order CFS outside of Texas in my experience. Therefore, I ended up ordering the catfish and shrimp platter, served grilled instead and added a $5 strawberry margarita. The entree comes with a side salad but they only have seelct dressings and none which I would typically order, so i just settled on honey mustard. Margarita- for only $5 it's not bad and comes with either sugar or salt rim Catfish and shrimp platter - seasoned with a blackened seasoning but it wasn't spicy. The catfish filet was small and tasted like it was previously frozen. The shrimp were also small and didn't taste much better. Not sure I'd return if ever in Lafayette, as I was really looking for a more festive environment and more grilled options.
